Jmenování uznávaného tanečníka a choreografa Nacha Duata v červnu 1990 novým uměleckým ředitelem přineslo souboru novátorskou proměnu. Duato integroval do tvorby současné taneční trendy, aniž by zcela odmítl klasický odkaz, a tím vytvořil dnes typický a nezaměnitelný styl této světově proslulé company. Soubor Compañía Nacional de Danza je známý a populární po celém světě a za dobu svého působení získal mnoho, nejen odborných, cen. The Compañía Nacional de Danza was founded in 1979 under the name of Ballet Nacional de España Clásico, and its first Director was Víctor Ullate. In 1983 the Direction of the Ballets Nacionales - Español y Clásico - was put under the charge of María de Avila who put Ray Barra, a former Northamerican dancer and choreographer living in Spain, in charge of a number of choreographies, and later offered him the post of Assistant Director, which he held until 1990. In December 1987, Maya Plisetskaya was appointed the ballet‘s Artistic Director. The appointment of renowned dancer and choreographer Nacho Duato as Artistic Director of Compañía Nacional de Danza in June 1990 has meant an innovative change in the company‘s history. It is Duato‘s firm intention to transform the Compañía into a ballet with a personality of its own in which, without neglecting the classical precepts, a more contemporary style is adopted. To achieve this, he will include new choreographic work in the Company‘s repertoire, created specially for it, together with other works of proven quality, recognised world-wide. Also, Nacho Duato contributes to the Compañía Nacional de Danza with his work as a choreographer, praised by critics all over the world and awarded prizes by the experts. Nacho Duato Nacho Duato se narodil ve Valencii ve Španělsku. V 18 letech začal studovat balet na Rambert School v Londýně, později pokračoval na Mudra School Maurice Béjarta v Bruselu a na The Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre v New Yorku. V roce 1980 Duato podepsal svou první smlouvu s Cullberg Ballet ve Stokholmu, o rok později ho Jiří Kylián angažoval do Nederlands Dans Theater v Holandsku. Během své výjimečně plodné a úspěšné kariéry dále spolupracoval například s Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Deutsche Oper Ballet, Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet Gulbenkian, Finnish Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Ballet nebo s American Ballet Theatre. V roce 1995 byl jmenován francouzským Rytířem umění, v roce 1998 získal španělskou Zlatou medaili Za zásluhy v oblasti umění. Se svým představením Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness vyhrál v roce 2000 jednu z nejprestižnějších světových cen v tanečním oboru - Benois de la Danse.

Born in Valencia, Spain. Nacho Duato started professional ballet training with the Rambert School in London at eighteen, expanding studies at Maurice Béjart‘s Mudra School in Brussels and completing his dance education at The Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre in New York. In 1980 Duato signed his first professional contract with the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm and a year later Jirí Kylián brought him to the Nederlands Dans Theater in Holland, where he was quickly incorporated into company and repertoire. For his achievements as a dancer he received the VSCD Gouden Dansprijs (Golden Dance Award) for the year 1987. Duato‘s natural talent had him soon look beyond the limitations of a dancer and turned towards choreography. His first attempt in 1983 turned into a major succes: Jardí Tancat to Spanish/Catalan music by compatriot Mª del Mar Bonet won him the first prize at the International Choreographic Workshop (Internationaler Choreographischer Wettbewerb) at Cologne. In 1988 Nacho Duato was named Resident Choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater - next to Hans van Manen and Jirí Kylián. With the growing demand of international companies requesting a work of his for their repertoire Duato had to take a decisive step towards choosing his future career. His ballets form part of the repertoire of companies like Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Deutsche Oper Ballet, Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet Gulbenkian, Finnish Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. In 1995 he received the grade of Chevalier dans l‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres which is annually given by the French Embassy in Spain. In 1998 the Spanish Gouvernment rewarded him the Golden Medal for the Merit in the Fine Arts. At the Stuttgart Opera he won the Benois de la Danse, one of the most prestigious international awards for choreography, presented by the International Dance Association for Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness in April of 2000. Duato is National Dance Award 2003 in modality of Creation. Since June 1990, invited by the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música of the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Nacho Duato is Artistic Director of Compañía Nacional de Danza.

This time Duato has turned to Haiti and the music of Toto Bissainthe, with drive and sway. It has inspired Duato in the crisp, clearcut style of Jardí Tancat. Four couples, in shades of gray working clothes, start calmly and build up to an arresting finish, with the word “liberté” repeated in the song. Rassemblement is a creation which gradually, through the liberating powers of music and dance, proves to be an impressive, thrilling and audience-affecting human rights appeal. These songs are mostly slave’s songs from the Voodoo cult. They express the daily life of the slaves, their longing for Africa, not as a geographical reality, but as a mythical land of freedom. They express their resistance and their refusal: resistance against the colonial, refusal of his politics, his religion, his culture and his language. During the history of Haiti, the face of the master has often changed. Capitalism, developing in Haiti, has transformed the sense of Voodoo. The ethnographer came first, and then the tourist for whom folklore was produced with revived exotic excitement. Voodoo, which for the poor and exploited peasants, had been a celebration of the African roots of their daily more unbearable way of life, became a “religion”, one of the tools of power. The birth of Voodoo in a land of exile, the first common language among slaves of different ethnic, backgrounds, was a vital creative moment, a cultural unification which was to transform the world: an opening for the confined. That is the moment we sing about. Using the tradicional music of Haiti we meet with other musical forms to open a way towards a contemporary music that knows no frontiers.

ženám totiž nebylo dovoleno během 16., 17. a 18 století veřejně vystupovat. Just a couple of hundred years ago sopranos were at the height of their popularity. They travelled around Europe singing opera and were considered on-stage heroes, and their art has been appreciated world-wide for centuries. The last castrato died just a few decades ago, during the 20th century. The custom of castrating predates Jesus Christ, and the original motives were somewhat different. Egyptians used castration as a punishment, the Arabs used it for religious reasons and the Turks employed it to create a group of men with no sexual urgings to guard their harems. However, in Italy castration had a completely different purpose. During the first century AD, when the apostle Saint Paul wrote “Mulier tacet in ecclesia” (“women shall remain in silence when they are in church”), he could hardly have imagined the effect his words would have some centuries later. Choirs without female voices, composed of countertenors and pre-puberty children, worked for some time, but as musical composition demanded an ever wider vocal range choirs needed men with a female voice, that is to say castrated men. So, in the mid-16th century the practise of castration arrived in Europe from the East. At the beginning of the 17th century a new type of music, opera, was taking shape in Italy. For castrati this was a golden opportunity for one simple reason: women were banned from taking part. As a result, since the first public theatre was opened in Venice in 1637 and until the mid-18th century, castrati dominated the world of opera and became irreplaceable. Castration produced extraordinary vocal skills and a rather peculiar colour to voices, which meant castrati were in great demand and also highly paid. Singing schools sprang up all over Italy to raise the belcanto art form to its highest possible level. Castrati were normally trained for between six and eight years at such schools, and private tutors also offered their services outside schools. Castrati: (Italian Castrato) Male singers, castrated before reaching puberty in order to retain their soprano or alto voices. In this manner the childlike timbre is kept, allowing them to sing soprano in a strange manner due to the normal development of their lungs. Castrati were much more common within ecclesiastical institutions, where women were not allowed to sing, and in theatres during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Held in very high prestige during these times.

Duato has inspired in old Spanish music of XV and XVI centuries together with some of the most beautiful verses of the Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega. Music and poetry connect the obvious contemporary dance of Por Vos Muero to his historic reference. In XV and XVI centuries dances formed part of the cultural expression of people, including all social hierarchies, and therefore they produced a honest reflection of culture of that time. Por Vos Muero wants to pay a tribute to the very important role that dance played in every sort of social event during those ancient times. I am continuously bathed in tears always breaking the air with sights and I am even more hurt by not telling I have arrived at this point because of you Song, I have told more that ordered and less than I thought do not ask me more, cause I will tell it No one can be happy, Madam, nor unhappy, unless he has looked at you cause the glory of seeing you vanishes in the moment one thinks of deserving you therefore, without knowing you, no one can be happy, Madam, nor unhappy, unless he has looked at you People get scared as you made them all gossip cause a miracle you made had to happen in the wedding I think you have to come if you continue on that way to turn water into wine as well as dance into laugh Tears that on this grave pour and were poured, receive, although they will be fruitless until that eternal, dark night close those eyes which saw you leaving me with other ones to see you Written on my soul is your gesture and all I desire to write about you you yourself wrote it, I only read it that even on that matter I follow you In that I am and will be ever ready cause even though I cannot cope with as much as I see in you from so much good, I believe in what I cannot understand taking the faith us premise I was not born but to love you my soul is patterned to your measures and because of its habit I do love you I confess to owe you all I have for you I was born, for you I am alive for you I have to die, and for you I die.
