Academic Honors
Graduation with Honors
Central Michigan University recognizes outstanding undergraduate students with academic honors. The honor is based on all academic work presented for the degree and indicates a high level of scholastic achievement. Students receiving a bachelor’s degree with honors have the honors category for which they qualify printed after their names. At the commencement ceremony, honors students wear medallions or gold cords signifying each level of achievement.
To graduate with honors, students must have, at the beginning of their final semester or session, a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (A is 4.00). Students also must complete at least 45 hours of credit in residence at CMU.
The three honors categories are:
Summa Cum Laude 3.90 to 4.00 GPA
Magna Cum Laude 3.75 to 3.89 GPA
Cum Laude 3.50 to 3.74 GPA

The University Seal
Central Michigan University’s official seal was adopted in 1954. It was designed by Peter Ketzler, a former CMU student, at the request of former president Charles L. Anspach. The university seal incorporates the seal of the state of Michigan and the Latin words, sapientia, virtus and amicitia – wisdom, virtue and friendship.

The Mace
The word “mace” is derived from the Latin mateola, meaning mallet or staff. In the Middle Ages, these staffs, with a ball of steel or brass at one end, were used as weapons against armored warriors. As weaponry became more sophisticated, the mace evolved from an instrument of battle to a symbol of authority and power.
European universities first adopted the mace as a symbol of authority and unity. This tradition has continued to the present day, and many institutions of higher learning use the mace in a ceremonial capacity.
Central Michigan University’s mace is of recent vintage, although it contains classical design elements of Greek and Roman influence. The CMU mace was designed and executed through wood carving and turning by former student Steven Hilgendorf, working with Professor Emeritus Emmett Mason. The CMU mace is constructed of Honduras mahogany in a torch shape with leaf and fluted column decoration. The mace was completed in December 1983 and first used in the commencement ceremony that year.
