Dear Friends of the Museum, We have always been a proud part of the Tucson community, and we revel in our role serving young children and their families with fun, hands-on opportunities for learning.

But we hadn’t really helped those children and families learn about that community we’re so proud of. This year, that changed.

Much of our planning and fundraising efforts during 201718 focused on creating our newest exhibit, a complete reimagining of our Build It! space into a celebration of what makes Tucson and Southern Arizona the place we love.

Sense of Place opened in September 2018 and it never fails to astound those who are seeing it for the first time.

The room includes representations of four of Tucson’s well-known attractions – Sabino Canyon, Colossal Cave, Kitt Peak and “A” Mountain – all surrounding our most iconic symbol, a giant saguaro. Kids can climb, explore, discover and play, all while learning about the flora and fauna of our desert, its human inhabitants and history.

While Sense of Place was our most visible accomplishment, we had an amazing year in other ways as well. After our first full year of Art after Dark, we can honestly say its popularity has exceeded our expectations!

Averaging more than 500 visitors for each 2-and-a-halfhour program, Art after Dark has been a great benefit to the Museum and our guests from Tucson’s robust

and diverse arts community. We look forward to finding more fun and interesting partners in the future.

Finally, we also want to acknowledge the Museum’s incredible commitment to ensuring our entire community is able to access our hands-on learning and programming, regardless of their financial situation or abilities. The Museum invested more than $300,000 back into the community through free and reduced-admission days, return passes and donations. This represents a 25 percent increase over the previous fiscal year!

We are dedicated to our mission to provide fun, play-based and hands-on learning experiences for more than 180,000 visitors to our two locations annually. We will continue to find ways to reach those who may not have considered a visit possible, and we have even more plans to improve the Museum experience for every visitor.

Thank you for your continued support of the Museum! We hope you will continue to help us bring more discovery, creativity and quality family experiences to children throughout Southern Arizona.

SENSE OF PLACE Sense of Place was an ambitious project from the moment we met to brainstorm ideas for a new exhibit.

We knew we wanted to represent our beautiful Sonoran Desert home, but how to create a room that will enchant and inform at the same time?

Should it focus solely on the desert and natural elements? What about what we experience in the city side of things? What truly represents where we live?

From initial converstations in Fall 2017 to its completion in September 2018, the “Tucson Room” – its working title – morphed into a whimsical exhibit that represents what we felt showcased the best of where we live. It showcased our Sense of Place, our pride in our community, a pride we are thrilled to be able to pass on to our young visitors.

The iconic saguaro in the center, with bat pollinators and desert sounds, is surrounded by natural and man-made elements that speak to our sense of the mountains and animals, plants and monuments we see every day. We may not notice them on a day-to-day basis, but they are certainly top-of-mindwhen we think of home.

The room also, importantly, highlights our Sense of Play. Shoot a bat off the cactus, climb Sabino Canyon, set off a monsoon, find the dragons in Colossal Cave or search the stars for astronauts!

COLLABORATION During 2017-18, the Children’s Museum collaborated with well over 100 organizations to create the best possible experience for our visitors. Many of those organizations are fellow nonprofits - the arts groups taking part in Art after Dark, or the Sky Island Alliance and the Tucson Chinese Culture Center represented at free community events.

We also had guests from the University of Arizona, local schools, Tucson and Pima County to ensure a broad range of cultures, experiences and expertise are represented whenever outside groups share with our visitors.

We are so proud to be able to work with such an amazing group of organizations, who are just as excited to bring their worlds to the kids as the kids are to see them.

ART AFTER DARK Tucson has a deep well of creative arts organizations, and we knew this when we created Art after Dark. We would never have a shortage of guests to choose from who would help broaden our visitors’ knowledge of the arts in our community.

We have been overwhelmed with the response of that community, and the thirst for new experiences and learning opportunities.

Presented in conjunction with Second Saturdays downtown, this free program was a success right out of the gate.

During 2017-18, we welcomed more than 6,100 visitors to Art after Dark. Thousands of people experienced the mind-boggling range of arts programs in Tucson, from classics such as Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Arizona Opera to the potentially new cultural experiences of Neoglyphix street art, Axé Capoeira and Tucson Taiko.

It’s the kind of experience that opens minds and creates true community pride and participation for future generations.

Evelyn Carswell-Bing 1919-2018 The Children’s Museum Tucson | Oro Valley said goodbye this year to Evelyn Carswell-Bing, one of the three women whose vision of a fun, play-based learning space for kids became CMT. Children’s Museum Tucson continues to innovate and expand its approach to playbased learning to ensure we have the maximum impact on our young visitors.

It’s also important to us that anyone has the opportunity to experience the Museum, regardless of their ability to pay our full admission price. That’s why we are gratified for the success of programs such as Art after Dark, Make it Mondays! and Museums for All, a discount program for families receiving public

assitance. We know we are reaching a wider audience because we open our doors to everyone.

But as important as those programs are, we know the Museum exhibits are what keep our visitors returning. We are so proud of Sense of Place, but there is more to come.

We are working on Imagine It!, where visitors can stretch their creativity in many directions, and an expanded Wee World with more Early Childhood Education experiences every day.

At 99, Evelyn was still a vibrant, funny, welcome visitor to the Museum each month. She brought treats, shared her amazing stories and brightened our days whenever she came around.

Evelyn was first and foremost an educator.

Her experience and dedication to children have inspired the Museum and will continue to do so for years to come.

ORO VALLEY Children’s Museum Oro Valley continues to offer valuable Early Childhood Education in a fun, playbased environment on the Northwest Side.

This year, we expanded our MyTime Inclusion Hour program to Oro Valley so more families and children with unique abililites can experience the Museum in a more quiet, accepting enviroment.

Our committment to accessibility for all families extends to Oro Valley, and we were thrilled to be able to offer a second reduced-admission day each month. First Things First Tuesday and Friends of the Oro Valley Public Library Third Tuesday offer $2 entry all day, with Wee Play programming included with admission.

We look forward to continuing to serve the Oro Valley community.
