Dear Friends of the Museum,

It has been another engaging, educational and playful year at the Children’s Museum Tucson | Oro Valley!

Each year we strive to create new experiences that are interactive, fun and involve learning. This past year we were fortunate to offer guests many improvements. These include upgrades to the fire truck in Public Safety, the new Circuits exhibit in Electri-City, a new climber for the littles in Wee World as well as the transition from grocery store to a

Mercado in Bodyology. We are most proud of our new My Time programming for children with special needs and our Art after Dark program that features free evening admission and collaboration with local arts groups on the second Saturday of each month.

While our most cherished feedback comes from members and guests, we always appreciate hearing outside perspectives on our efforts. We were honored to have Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey visit the Museum in recognition of all the Museum has achieved and the impact we have had in our community. And we are humbled by the Museum’s selection as a 2017 National Medal finalist by the Institute of Museum & Library Services for our financial accessibility focus in the community – the second consecutive year the Museum has received this prestigious national recognition.

We remain focused on and committed to honoring our mission to provide fun, play-based and hands-on learning experiences for nearly 175,000 children and families that visit our two locations annually. We have much in store for the coming year, but our future successes are directly linked to our collaborations and partnerships throughout our community. I hope you will consider engaging, supporting and investing in your Children’s Museum so that we can bring more discovery, creativity and quality family experiences to children throughout Southern Arizona.

NERSHIP PARTNERSHIP

Art after Dark

If there were a theme for 2017, it could very well be Partnership.

The Museum already has a long history of collaborations and partnerships with a variety of groups and organizations in the Tucson area. Our Community Events, from FAME to Zoom-Zoom, have always relied on the relationships we have with our sponsors, local schools and arts groups.

In FY2017, we took the opportuntiy to expand and grow those relationships with three new programs at CMT.

Space Night

MyTime Inclusion Hour is a collaboration between the Museum and Intermountain Centers that began in April 2017. Once a month, the Museum opens an hour early to give familes and their children with unique needs an opportunity to experience the Museum in a quieter, less-crowded atmosphere with discounted admission. This program will expand in 2018.

Art after Dark, which began in May 2017, is a wide-ranging collaboration with local arts groups. At this free event on the Second Saturday of each month, two arts groups have the opportunity to show our visitors what they have to offer kids and families. It has already reached thousands of visitors.

Space Night, a collaboration with Planetary Science Intstitute, is an overnight Museum adventure that combines the fun of a sleepover with presentations and hands-on experiments led by real planetary scientists.

The night was a hit with both the kids and the scientists!

As our mission states, we aim to provide hands-on learning experiences for children. We do this not only for our daily visitors, but through education programming that reached more than 16,000 people in FY 2017.

Students who come to the Museum on school tours or are visited by the Museum’s education staff through classroom outreach are presented with programs that meet state curriculum standards. These programs cover a range of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) topics, from The Art of Color to the world of bugs.

Students taking part in free I am a Scientist afterschool program in the first two years

I am a Scientist, the Museum’s free afterschool STEM-based program, added a new group of third graders as its first-year students began their second year. A large number of students from our two neighboring elementary schools returned year two, and the program received great reviews from both kids and their parents!

Weekend visitors to the Museum downtown now have two opportunities to take part in Family Brain Boost, which expanded due to its popularity!

COMMUNITY We are proud to have been part of the Tucson community for more than 30 years! We love that people who came here as children now bring their own kids to experience the joy of discovery, learning and play at the Museum.

We also take seriously the responsibilty of being part of a larger community. We recognize that families have different opportunities for recreation, education and time together. As part of our mission, we try to ensure that any family that wants to experience the Museum has that opportunity.

Children’s Museum Tucson | Oro Valley offers 54 free or reduced-admission days throughout the year to make the Museum experience accessible to the widest variety of people.

At Children’s Museum Tucson, those discounted days account for 13 percent of our open hours.

As part of this community, we also believe in giving back in other ways. In 2017, we donated nearly $13,000 in passes and memberships to help other organizations raise funds. All told, we have invested more than $241,000, or about 13 percent, of the Museum’s income back into our community.

TUCSON TUCSON

The touch of a local family, a new place to climb and an electrifying new exhibit helped keep the Museum fresh and fun in FY 2017.

We welcomed the Flores family to our Museum experience! To celebrate their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, the kids of the El Charro restaurant family worked with the Museum to create the Flores Mercado. The updated, colorful market and kitchen area in Bodyology honors the family’s deep Tucson roots. Kids love to shop in the Mercado, or make tamales in the kitchen.

Our addition to Wee World – our room for the 4 and under crowd – was a hit from the minute it opened in February. The Luckey Leaf Climber lets little ones test their physical skills as they climb up, over and through the leafy structure that’s just their size.

Circuits, a new exhibit in TEP’s Electri-City, gives visitors the chance to explore connectivity and power use through a series of metal connectors and a generator. Making all the bulbs light up isn’t easy especially when power is running to the fan, too! Make the fastest circuit, or see how many pieces you can power at once!

We expanded both our space and our programs at CMOV in FY 2017.

In January, we began offering Family Brain Boost each Wednesday for our visitors. Brain Boost is the highly-successful program we began last year at our Downtown location. The program is an inclusive science lesson, scaled for our young visitors, but involving the entire family to help everyone get more familiar and comfortable with scientific principles, vocabulary and topics. Some of the topics tackled at Oro Valley include motion, weather, healthy eating, engineering and construction.

Our new enclosed patio, an outdoor area just south of the Museum, offers the perfect space for some of the messier Brain Boost experiments. It is also a great place for kids to explore water play, test gravity on the ball wall or just sit and have a snack at one of the picnic tables. Plans for 2018 include adding a wall mural and music instruments. We will continue to find innovative ways to use this space for programs and events!
