Ian Bostridge I an Bostridge CBE has made regular appearances at the Salzburg,

Edinburgh, Munich, Vienna, Schwarzenberg, and Aldeburgh festivals. He has had residencies at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall New York, Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Philharmonie Luxembourg, London's Barbican Centre and Wigmore Hall. In 2018 Ian began an auspicious Artistic Residency with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the first of its kind for the ensemble.

In opera, he has performed the roles Lysander (Britten A Midsummer Night's Dream) for Opera Australia and at the Edinburgh Festival, Jeptha at the Opéra National de Paris, Tamino (Mozart Die Zauberflöte) and Jupiter (Handel Semele) for English National Opera and Peter Quint (Britten The Turn of the Screw), Don Ottavio (Mozart Don Giovanni) and Caliban (Adès The Tempest) for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. For the Bayerische Staatsoper he has sung Nerone (Monteverdi L’Incoronazione di Poppea), Tom Rakewell (Stravinsky The Rake’s Progress) and Male Chorus (Britten The Rape of Lucretia), for the Wiener Staatsoper he has sung Don Ottavio and for the Teatro alla Scala Milan he has sung Peter Quint. He has sung Aschenbach (Britten Death in Venice) for English National Opera, La Monnaie, Brussels and in Luxembourg.

Highlights of the 2018/19 season include a European recital tour with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau which will include a new composition by Mehldau, a world premiere of a new commission by James MacMillan with the London Symphony Orchestra for the WW1 centenary, staged performances of the Zender Winterreise, directed by Netia Jones, in Shanghai, recordings of the three major Schubert song cycles live at the Wigmore Hall with pianists Lars Vogt and Thomas Adès, recital tours in Japan, Hong Kong and Korea, as well as a European concert tour with Europa Galante. Further ahead, Ian will return to the operatic stage at the Deutsche Oper and give the world premiere of a new work written for him by Olli Mustonen.

Saskia Giorgini W inner of the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg in 2016, where she also got the special prize for the best interpretation of the commissioned work, Saskia Giorgini is considered one of the most interesting pianists of the young generation.

Saskia has appeared in acclaimed recitals and live radio recordings in prestigious halls and Festivals, including Lingotto–Hall in Turin, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Concerti del Quirinale in Rome, Meistersingerhalle in Nürnberg, Liederhalle in Stuttgart, Großer Saal Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg, Utrecht Kamermuziek Festival, MiTo Settembre Musica Festival, Unione Musicale di Torino, Vancouver Summer Festival, and Warsaw’s Filharmonia Narodowa.

She has played together with orchestras such as Lodz Philarmonic Orchestra in Poland, CBC Radio Orchestra in Canada, Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra in Latvia, Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, l'Orchestra Archi De Sono, Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, under the baton of conductors as Mario Bernardi, Gérard Korsten, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Antonello Manacorda, Andrea Battistoni, and Massimiliano Caldi.

A special affinity for chamber music brings her regularly together with renowned partners: Ian Bostridge, Martin Fröst, Janine Jansen, Gilles Apap, Mario Brunello, Thomas Demenga, Friedemann Eichhorn, Dora Schwarzberg, and many others.

Her upcoming projects include: Concerts with Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and Eliahu Inbal, concerts with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester with Simon Gaudenz and Mozart Concerto K. 491, a Liszt recital for the Liszt Festival in Raiding, debut album recording for Brilliant Classics (G. Enescu), and the recording of Die Schöne Müllerin (Schubert) for Pentatone with Ian Bostridge.

Saskia was admitted to the piano academy "Incontri col Maestro" in Imola at the age of fifteen, where she studied with Franco Scala, Riccardo Risaliti, Leonid Margarius, Louis Lortie, and Michel Dalberto. At the same time she graduated from the Conservatorio di Torino with Claudio Voghera. She then completed her studies at the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo with Enrico Pace, at the KUG in Graz with Julius Drake (Liedbegleitung), and at the Mozarteum Salzburg with Pavel Gililov.

DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN D. 795 FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797-1828) WILHELM MÜLLER (1794 -1827) 'It is not the latest slight – which, in itself, is minimal – that produces the fit of crying, the outburst of despair or the attempt at suicide, in disregard of the axiom that an effect must be proportionate to its cause; the small slight of the present moment has aroused and set working the memories of very many, more intense, earlier slights, behind all of which there lies in addition the memory of a serious slight in childhood which has never been overcome.' - Sigmund Freud, The Aetiology of Hysteria At first sight, Die schöne Müllerin is a far less unsettling work than Winterreise. It tells a story, clearly, with a narrative structure which allows for joy and musing in equal measure, the whirr of the mill-wheel and the purling of the companionate brook. How much more forbidding is the winter's journey, with its manic-depressive trajectory and open-ended conclusion, how modern.

Die schöne Müllerin emerged from a long tradition of related stories, and is less quintessentially romantic than Winterreise. Wandering in the latter is existential, unsettled, compulsive; in the former it starts out as the simple journeyman's search for employment and is, apparently, a thing of joy. 'Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust,' we are asked to believe, and we sort of do. There are plenty of fairy tales about apprentices setting out with a song in their heart (though often with a curse from their old mother ringing in their ears); Narcissus myths about the dangers of overmuch reflection; and folk-tales rooted in the old conflict between settled ways of life and the rootless huntsman, the smooth and the hairy – all the way back to Esau and Jacob. Closer to the Biedermeier era there had been a real literary trend for tales about millers and huntsman and mill-girls – Paisiello, Goethe, Des Knaben Wunderhorn – something Wilhelm Müller, the poet of Die schöne Müllerin, drew on and intermittently mocked.

Schubert was no naive co-opter of all this cultural baggage, however. Just as Müller's Die Winterreise became Schubert's Winterreise, with a corresponding loss of narrative coherence and intensification of aesthetic power, Die schöne Müllerin (ultimately part of the same collection of poems) was utterly transformed at the composer's hands.

And, as ever, he knew what he was doing (something the Schubert industry, with its image of the composer as a cosy anti-Beethoven, has been at pains to deny, even to

this day). What had been, quite literally, a game, poetical charades played at home by knowing literary types, became deadly serious. It would be all too easy to see this as the naive composer sentimentalising his material. The reverse is nearer the truth.

The original Die schöne Müllerin, in its equivocation between naive feeling and irony, exemplifies Oscar Wilde's bon mot that sentimentality is the bank holiday of cynicism.

Schubert's cycle removes the poet's ironic voice, and minimises the presence of the girl herself ('Es kommt ein Regen' is the only thing she says, and how brilliant of Schubert to make that one remark so thoroughly ambiguous – a cold rehearsal of fact, or a piece of heartless mockery, teasing the boy for his tears?). In doing so it creates a piece with the resonance of myth, which can play to the unconscious and draw on deep-seated notions of sexual fear, narcissism, a shying away from adulthood, even class antagonism.

Die schöne Müllerin was the first Schubert cycle – perhaps the first song cycle – that I fell in love with, and it is easy to see its appeal to my adolescent mind, a story of disappointed love, a young innocent defeated by a more experienced, more glamorous, presumably older rival. In fact, as with so much of Schubert's music, it has been all too easy to privilege the biographical. Commentators have been doing this with regularity since Schubert's own time, and they have yet to let up. The assumption is of a naive artist pouring his feelings into artless melody. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Schubert was a radical composer, and Die schöne Müllerin is not a work in which we should make the all-too-common mistake of equating creator with protagonist, either in the old version – poor Schubert, disappointed in love, shy with the girls – or the new – Schubert the homosexual avant la lettre, drawn to a story about an androgynous youth who never really wanted the girl anyway and who is defined in precise opposition to the priapic, hirsute masculinity of the hunter. Schubert did make a very clear decision to remove the framing device of Wilhelm Müller's poetic cycle, purging the work of ironic commentary, and of a piece with tinier but significant alterations he made to even classic literary texts which he set to music, but this does not entail simple identification with the narrative voice. The boy's failure really to dare to address the girl, after all, contains its own complex of ironies – a central song, Pause, in which the miller declares that his heart is too full to go on singing. He sings on nevertheless, and sings himself into oblivion.

Die schöne Müllerin is one of the central works of the European tradition because, despite its cosy setting, it plumbs the psychoanalytic depths, speaking of sex and death in a way few other works have managed, achieving a perfect balance between stasis and movement which lends its tragic unfolding an extraordinarily compulsive quality. It stands with the works of 1827-28 – the String Quintet, Winterreise, the last three piano sonatas, Schwanengesang – as a sort of artistic miracle. From the outset, Schubert's work was saturated with love and death (one of his earliest songs is entitled Leichenfantasie – the 'Corpse Fantasy'), a result of personal history, poetic taste, and cultural milieu. Schubert's private tragedies in the Schöne Müllerin year, 1823 – diagnosis of syphilis, time spent in hospital, a future curtailed – will have interacted, in a complex but undeniable manner, on the genesis of this very public utterance, in which charm, obsession, beauty, and savagery battle for the mind of the listener.

Am Bach viel kleine Blumen steh’n, aus hellen, blauen Augen seh’n; der Bach, der ist des Müllers Freund, und hellblau Liebchens Auge scheint, drum sind es meine Blumen.

By the stream there are many little flowers, peeping with bright blue eyes; the stream is a friend to the miller, and my love's eyes are bright blue, so these are my flowers.

Dicht unter ihrem Fensterlein, da will ich pflanzen die Blumen ein; da ruft ihr zu, wenn alles schweigt, wenn sich ihr Haupt zum Schlummer neigt, ihr wißt ja, was ich meine.

Right under her little window I will plant my flowers, there you will call to her when all is quiet, when she is falling asleep, you know just what I mean.

Und wenn sie tät die Äuglein zu und schläft in süßer, süßer Ruh, dann lispelt als ein Traumgesicht ihr zu: Vergiß, vergiß mein nicht!

Das ist es, was ich meine.

And when she closes her eyes and is sleeping in sweet repose, then whisper to her in her dreams: 'Forget me not!'

I saw them dancing and looking up from the blissful stream, the little blue flowers on the bank danced and looked up at her.

And the whole sky seemed submerged in the stream, and wanted to draw me too into its depths.

Meiner Sehnsucht allerheißesten Schmerz durft’ ich aushauchen in Liederscherz, und wie ich klagte so süß und fein, glaubt’ ich doch, mein Leiden wär’ nicht klein.

Ei, wie groß ist wohl meines Glückes Last, daß kein Klang auf Erden es in sich faßt?

I have hung my lute on the wall, and have twined a green ribbon round it, I cannot sing any more, my heart is too full, I do not know how to force my feelings into verse.

The most searing pain of my longing I could breathe out in playful song, and as I sang my plaints so sweetly and delicately, I did not think my suffering slight.

'What a shame that the beautiful green ribbon is fading here on the wall, I like green so much!'

That is what you said to me today, my love; I shall untie it straight away and send it to you: Now the green ribbon is yours to enjoy!

Ist auch dein ganzer Liebster weiß, soll Grün doch haben seinen Preis, und ich auch hab’ es gern.

Weil unsre Lieb’ ist immergrün, weil grün der Hoffnung Fernen blüh’n, drum haben wir es gern.

Even if your loved one is all in white, Green should still have some praise, and I also like it.

Because our love is evergreen, because hope blooms green, in the distance, that is why we like it.

Nun schlinge in die Locken dein das grüne Band gefällig ein, du hast ja’s Grün so gern.

Was sucht denn der Jäger am Mühlbach hier?

Bleib, trotziger Jäger, in deinem Revier!

Hier gibt es kein Wild zu jagen für dich, hier wohnt nur ein Rehlein, ein zahmes, für mich.

Und willst du das zärtliche Rehlein sehn, so laß deine Büchsen im Walde steh’n, und laß deine kläffenden Hunde zu Haus, und laß auf dem Horne den Saus und Braus, und schere vom Kinne das struppige Haar, sonst scheut sich im Garten das Rehlein fürwahr.

What is the hunter looking for here at the mill-stream?

Stay on your preserve, headstrong hunter!

There is no game for you to hunt here, there is only my little tame doe.

And if you want to see the gentle little doe, then leave your gun in the forest, and leave your yelping hounds at home, leave your horn's clamour, and shave the bristly hair from your chin, or the little doe in the garden is sure to be afraid.

Doch besser, du bliebest im Walde dazu und ließest die Mühlen und Müller in Ruh. Was taugen die Fischlein im grünen Gezweig?

Was will denn das Eichhorn im bläulichen Teich?

Drum bleibe, du trotziger Jäger, im Hain, und laß mich mit meinen drei Rädern allein, und willst meinem Schätzchen dich machen beliebt, so wisse, mein Freund, was ihr Herzchen bertrübt: Die Eber, die kommen zur Nacht aus dem Hain und brechen in ihren Kohlgarten ein, und treten und wühlen herum in dem Feld; die Eber, die schieße, du Jägerheld!

You would do better to stay in the forest and to leave mills and millers in peace.

What would fish be doing among green branches?

What does a squirrel want in a blue pond?

So stay in the wood, you headstrong hunter, and leave me alone with my three mill-wheels, and should you want my darling to fall in love with you, then I shall tell you what is troubling her little heart: The boars which come out of the wood at night and break into her cabbage garden, and trample and root about in the field – those boars, shoot them, hero among hunters!

Where are you hurrying, so ruffled and wild, dear stream?

Are you angrily chasing that brash hunter?

Turn back, turn back, and first of all scold your miller-girl for her flighty, loose, weak and fickle heart, turn back, turn back, turn back!

Sahst du sie gestern abend nicht am Tore steh’n, mit langem Halse nach der großen Straße sehn?

Wenn von dem Fang der Jäger lustig zieht nach Haus, da steckt kein sittsam Kind den Kopf zum Fenster ’naus.

Didn't you see her yesterday evening at the gate, craning her neck to see into the street?

When the hunter goes merrily home from the chase, no decent girl would stick her head out of the window.

Geh, Bächlein, hin, und sag ihr das; doch sag ihr nicht, hörst du, kein Wort, von meinem traurigen Gesicht; sag ihr: Er schnitzt bei mir sich eine Pfeif’ aus Rohr und bläst den Kindern schöne Tänz’ und Lieder vor.

Back you go, my little stream and tell her that; but don't tell her – do you hear – don't tell her a word about my sad face!

Tell her: 'By my banks he cut himself a reed pipe and is playing lovely dances and tunes for the children.'

Ich möchte die grünen Blätter all pflücken von jedem Zweig, ich möchte die grünen Gräser all weinen ganz totenbleich.

I would like to pluck all the green leaves from every twig, I would like to bleach all the green grass dead white with my tears.

Ach Grün, du böse Farbe du, was siehst mich immer an so stolz, so keck, so schadenfroh, mich armen, weißen Mann?

Oh green, you hateful colour, why do you look at me so proudly, so boldly, so spitefully, poor white man that I am?

Ich möchte liegen vor ihrer Tür, in Sturm und Regen und Schnee, und singen ganz leise bei Tag und Nacht das eine Wörtchen: Ade!

Horch, wenn im Wald ein Jagdhorn schallt, so klingt ihr Fensterlein, und schaut sie auch nach mir nicht aus, darf ich doch schauen hinein.

When a hunting-horn rings out in the forest, you can hear her window open; and even though she is not looking out for me, I can still look in.

All the flowers which she gave me, you shall be laid with me in the grave.

Why do you all look at me so sadly, as if you knew what had happened to me?

All you flowers, so faded, so pale?

All you flowers, why are you so wet?

Ach, Tränen machen nicht maiengrün, machen tote Liebe nicht wieder blüh’n; und Lenz wird kommen, und Winter wird geh’n, und Blümlein werden im Grase steh’n, und Blümlein liegen in meinem Grab, die Blümlein alle, die sie mir gab.

Ah, tears do not bring back the greenness of May, they do not make dead love blossom again; and spring will come, and winter will go, and there will be flowers growing in the grass, and there will be flowers lying in my grave, all the flowers she gave me.

Der Müller Wo ein treues Herze in Liebe vergeht, da welken die Lilien auf jedem Beet; da muß in die Wolken der Vollmond geh’n, damit seine Tränen die Menschen nicht seh’n; da halten die Englein die Augen sich zu und schluchzen und singen die Seele zur Ruh.

The Miller When a true heart perishes for love, then the lilies all fade in their bed; then the full moon must hide in the clouds, so that men may not see its tears; then the angels cover their eyes, and they sob, and sing the soul to rest.

Der Bach Und wenn sich die Liebe dem Schmerz entringt, ein Sternlein, ein neues, am Himmel erblinkt; da springen drei Rosen, halb rot und halb weiß, die welken nicht wieder, aus Dornenreis; und die Engelein schneiden die Flügel sich ab und geh’n alle Morgen zur Erde herab.

The Stream And when love tears itself free of sorrow, a new star twinkles in the sky; then three roses, half red, half white, which will not fade, spring from the thorn-twig; and the angels cut off their wings and come down to earth each morning.
