LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, At the Mount, we know the true worth of a liberal arts education. We recognize exceptional quality. We understand authentic value. We know that a life of accomplishment is built on the ability to unpack and map complexity, think creatively, discern the values that are at stake in our actions, and accept responsibility for what we do. We share the attraction to excellence and aversion to mediocrity that help the soul to sing.

Top Ten Best Colleges ranks the Mount among the top 10 Catholic colleges and universities in the U.S. and 13th most diverse among colleges and universities nationwide.

The ingredients of an excellent liberal arts education are not complicated: high quality programs; superb, committed, engaging faculty members; and talented, ambitious, hardworking students.

The Mount has these in abundance, so how do we answer those increasingly numerous public officials and policy wonks who claim that education can be excellent if built upon on simplistic scores and surveys devised by well-meaning political committees? One Department of Education official said that we shouldn’t have a hard time getting our heads around such a rating system. It’s familiar.

We do it for blenders.

Last year the College devised a response that can serve as a model for the nation. We set about to summarize true measures of this institution’s quality.

We sought to convey what makes the College exceptional, and to challenge other institutions to develop a similar summary. The result: a collectively curated constellation of measures that matter—benchmarked results and examples of impressive student achievement. We call our summary National Measures of Quality.

At the same time, we announced a Tuition Reset, effective in August, 2015, whereby the College will reduce its tuition, room and board, and fees while simultaneously reducing financial aid packages. These two initiatives plainly show that the value of a superb education, coupled with a price that brings it within reach of more families who earnestly desire and deserve it, is one more authentic measure of value.

In the pages that follow, you will meet a sampling of individuals whose stories illuminate the achievements, excellence, commitment, and brilliance of the community known as the College of Mount Saint Vincent. By focusing on their stories, revealing their human qualities as well as their achievements, we offer our case and show that the Mount does not need a rating system devised by the federal government and does not need to make national headlines to prove that its quality is exceptional and its value is authentic.

The Mount holds students to high expectations, but it isn’t “do or die.”

Mount Pathway programs assist in the transition to College, provide counsel and assistance to students who hit bumps along the way, and through the Oxley Career Education Program, engage students from the moment they enter college with the identification of and preparation for their careers after graduation. On page 8 you will read about one deserving student who has thrived as a beneficiary of this support and is giving back in many ways.

Exceptional. At last spring’s Student Research and Service Symposium, more than 80 students presented an astonishing array of their discoveries on topics in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences. These original research and service projects, conducted entirely by the students and guided by our dedicated faculty, demonstrate extraordinary academic excellence and commitment to service. I invite you to read about two of these exceptional student presenters, beginning on page 4.

Value. Last year our “Outside the Classroom” initiative made an excellent beginning. Students dazzled us with their performances in the Model UN, The Underground international literary magazine, the Media Club, and our theater and dance groups. Athletics, too, is enjoying an extraordinary surge in quality and performance. Coaches are deeply committed to student success and retention as well as their athletes’ peak performance on field and court. The newly completed Fitness Center in the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic Center has been humming with activity, and the beautifully-appointed Athletic Field, which opened at the start of the academic year, has inspired players and student “fans” alike. On page 9 you’ll find stories of two students who exemplify the “complete package,” excelling academically while participating in athletics, and still finding time to contribute their share of volunteer service.

Quality. A Mount Saint Vincent education is made possible through the generosity of alumnae/i and friends. This report includes some especially impressive examples of generosity. With a collective gift of $85,987, two-dozen members of the Class of 1948 garnered distinction for the most given by any class to last year’s Annual Fund. Their pride and spirit are inspiring. Just as stirring was the largest donation from an individual—a very generous $1 million gift from William and Joan Fishlinger. Their largesse has provided the startup funding for the Fishlinger Center for Public Opinion Research and opens up the possibility of creating new majors in both public policy and market analysis. I will report more on these initiatives as they are developed and rolled out.

Our feature story is about one benefactor who also stands out. A Centennial Society member, he has elected to remember the College in his will. Although neither an alumnus nor parent of a student, he has been inspired by the quality of a Mount education and the opportunities it affords. His commitment is to the American Dream and thus to high quality, life-transforming education. We just had to tell his story. You’ll find it on page 6.

Authentic. In late summer, the College was awarded a prestigious, highly competitive Title V grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Totaling $2.3 million over five years, the grant will help the College to integrate and expand its advising and career education programs. The new Mount Access Program (MAP) joins our existing HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program), which supports commuter students, and TRIO, a federally-funded student support services program, in a branded group known as the Mount Pathways. annual report 2013-2014

Each of the features in this report is ultimately about a beautiful soul. Maybe that is an occasion for us all to reflect once more on Matthew 6:21: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Of course, our greatest treasure is found in ourselves and in each other. Our treasure is our involvement, our commitment, our hard work, and our best thinking. Without all of us placing our treasure where our hearts are, we may find that our progress is not as swift or sure. Our goals may exceed our grasp. But by engaging our best selves with generosity and good will, all things are possible.

A 2013 study from the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA demonstrated that, among many other qualities, Mount students display a driving curiosity, are willing to research the answers to satisfy that curiosity, and are likely to collaborate on group projects and make class presentations. These facts are borne out in the experiences of two Mount students who are venturing into the worlds of scientific research and social activism.

Katiuska Hernandez ’15 is bent on a life as a bench researcher. Gabrielle Loccisano ’16 is passionate about making a more just world. Each has made the most of the Mount’s opportunities for students who enjoy exceeding expectations.

Katiuska Hernandez The Student Scientist Katiuska Hernandez ’15, a biology major, was captivated by science at an early age because it “explains why we are the way we are.” During her sophomore year, she became fascinated with the idea of doing scientific research on fruit flies, which she studied in genetics class. At the start of her junior year, she began working in the laboratory of Janet Rollins, PhD, Associate Professor of Chemistry. “We learned basic research and lab techniques, and we also learned how to work with the flies—dissecting them, dosing them, caring for them. It’s very intricate work and takes a lot of practice to master.”

EXCEPTIONAL and guide, Katiuska and five other students collaborated on a major research project, conducting laboratory procedures and tests, writing up their findings, and presenting a poster at last year’s Student Research and Service Symposium.

The study, Using Drosophila Melanogaster as a Model Organism to Study Reproductive Toxicants, was the result of a joint research grant with Brown University, where Dr. Rollins has an adjunct faculty appointment and where Katiuska completed an internship this past summer. It was there that her next career move became firmly cemented.

“I want to go to graduate school,” she says confidently. “I’d like to do research on the link

between environmental pollutants and cancer.

We hardly ever stop to think how things in our environment may be affecting our lives, and that’s what I want to study.”

Katiuska credits the personal attention she gets in the Mount’s small classes with helping her find and take advantage of the Mount’s exceptional opportunities. “My professors know me, what I’m working toward, and what would most benefit me,” such as the internship at Brown and another at Kent State University following her sophomore year. The latter resulted in her work appearing as part of a published research paper.

She feels her experiences at the Mount have made her “more independent, and a critical college of mount saint vincent

something the U.N. and others like Gabrielle fervently wish to see happen. Whatever you call this $32 billion industry that touches so many aspects of daily life, most Americans are only marginally aware of the problem.

“Not many people know what human trafficking is, but as soon as you explain it to them, they are in shock that it exists today, that it is so pervasive, and that not enough is being done about it,” she says.

Gabrielle first learned of the crisis through her honors curriculum. Encouraged by advisors, she began visiting high schools to help students recognize that what they post on their Facebook page can make them vulnerable to predators who deal in human trafficking.

Gabrielle Loccisano The Student Activist Gabrielle Loccisano ’16, an English major in the Honors Program, is a complex and thoughtful young woman who readily admits that her small world has opened up significantly since she started as a freshman.

Gabrielle’s signature topic of interest is human trafficking—which, she informs us, is now called by a new name, thanks to a United Nations decree: modern-day slavery, a startling rubric that strikes a chord and communicates more effectively—

Working with members of the Women’s Studies Club, she took on additional service projects. Last year, based on data showing that sex trafficking in cities hosting a Super Bowl can double or triple during game week, Gabrielle and her fellow volunteers began calling hotels in advance of the Super Bowl. They did their best to explain the problem, inviting hotel owners to send managers for free awareness training. “There are small things hotel managers can do, even if they are not ready to bring in the police,” Gabrielle explains. “They can inscribe a hotline number on the free soaps that are distributed in every room. It may be a small gesture, but for someone who was brought into a hotel against their will, knowing where they can get help could make a huge difference.”

Gabrielle says her advisors—Mary Katherine Hamm, S.C., who was the LifeWay Network Coordinator of Education when she worked with Gabby and other Mount students, and Matthew Shields, Director of Campus Ministry—have been a tremendous support. “They educate you about a problem and then let you decide what next steps you are ready to take.” The problem of human trafficking is allencompassing, she points out: it brings in issues continued on page 45

Cristóbal (Cris) Conde Cristóbal “Cris” Conde is an investor in start-up companies and a partner in a business incubator, a business support network that facilitates the growth of promising startups. Until 2011 Cris was president and CEO of SunGard, a software firm that he grew into a $5.6 billion Fortune 500 company, the largest privately-held business software and IT services company in the world. Born in Santiago, Chile, Mr. Conde is a U.S. citizen and has a B.Sc. in astronomy and physics from Yale University. He serves on the boards of several for-profit and nonprofit organizations, including the College of Mount Saint Vincent. We sat down to talk with Cris about his decision to remember the Mount in his will, a gesture that, although not uncommon, tends to set a person apart by demonstrating a deep commitment to an institution.

CMSV: WHAT PROMPTED YOUR DECISION TO MAKE A SIGNIFICANT GIFT TO THE MOUNT IN YOUR WILL? CC: I think a better question to ask me would be, “Cris, you did not attend this college, and you are not the parent of a student here. Why have you decided to become a major supporter of the Mount?”

QUALITY THE PHILANTHROPIST

The answer is that I believe deeply in the mission to make a liberal arts education accessible to students who have to surmount great obstacles to attend a first-rate college. I also believe deeply in that student—one of the first generation in their families to attend college. With a first-rate college education, I believe you can actually change society.

CMSV: CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE MOUNT’S LONG HISTORY OF SERVING FIRSTGENERATION STUDENTS? CC: When I look at this institution’s track record for educating students who have the fewest advantages and the most to gain, I know that the Mount’s legacy of serving this type of student goes back decades. There was a time when “firstgeneration student” meant students who came from mostly Italian families. At another time it was mostly Irish families. Today the face of the firstgeneration student has changed, but the Mount’s commitment remains the same—to serve these young people and their families who are striving to better their lives and society.

CMSV: TO WHOM DO YOU GIVE CREDIT FOR THE SUCCESS OF THIS COMMITMENT? CC: I have faith in the very credible, excellent team that is leading this institution. The faculty, the leadership, the administration—this is a committed team of people who mean what they say.

I look for three things before I invest in a company: one, they must have a great product. Two, they need a plan for getting it to the people who need it. And three, there must be a strong need for it.

That’s the kind of company I invest in. And it’s also why I want to support the Mount—it’s a different kind of investment, but the criteria are similar.

It has a great product—a first-rate liberal arts curriculum with individualized attention to each student; its mission is to offer access to students with the greatest need and ability; and the world is hungry for this kind of well-rounded, well-educated individual who is learning to succeed in a highly diverse society.

CMSV: YOU HAVE SAID THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT A MOUNT EDUCATION CAN “MOVE THE

NEEDLE.” CAN YOU EXPLAIN? CC: I think your real question is, can Mount students change society? Yes, I believe they can. I went to Yale, where I earned a degree in astrophysics.

Yale is a fine school and I am grateful for the education I received there. I could give money to Yale. But would it change society? I don’t think so. On the other hand, by being exposed to the rigorous standards and enriched environment at this college, the students here are being molded into exceptional individuals. As graduates, their potential to contribute to society and to their own families is limitless. So when you look at it that way, the Mount can actually move the needle.

CMSV: SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE THINKING THAT WENT INTO YOUR DECISION TO LEAVE A GIFT TO THE MOUNT AFTER YOU ARE GONE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE SUCH A GENEROUS GESTURE? CC: I started my first company with two friends, a credit card and about $6,000 in savings. That’s because I believed there were no limits on what I could achieve with hard work. Eventually it became one of the largest tech companies in the world with 26,000 employees. I’m an example of what a person can do, given the right education and a belief in one’s own potential. And I don’t think I’m done yet! That’s what I see all around me here—in the students, the leadership, and faculty: limitless potential.

So yes, I have named the College of Mount Saint Vincent in my will. But I’ve gone one step further.

I feel so strongly about ensuring that the College receives the full amount I feel it deserves, I’ve included a clause that states if I were to die young, the Mount will get the full amount they would receive had I lived to a much greater age.

CMSV: AS A TRUSTEE, YOU ARE OFTEN WORKING BEHIND THE SCENES TO ENSURE THE INSTITUTION’S HEALTH AND MISSION. HOW OFTEN DO YOU INTERACT WITH STUDENTS? CC: Students are often invited to College events that I attend, and I go to some of their events as well. I find them very personable, very poised, with great stories to tell. They have a certain special quality—they do well in spite of the hardships they may have suffered and the sacrifices their families have had to make. At the Mount, they are encouraged and guided as they surmount obstacles, and they are succeeding in spite of those obstacles. It’s inspiring and rewarding to know I am giving something of myself to continue this wonderful legacy.

CMSV: DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTING THOUGHTS? CC: Everywhere you go on this campus, you can feel a powerful, positive energy. Every time you hear the president speak, every time one class graduates and another class comes in to take their place, you know this is a place that values rigor, encourages dreams, and demonstrates to its students that anything is possible.

The Class President Ciara Rosa ’15, a communication major, is a busy, high-achieving student in the College’s Honors Program. In addition to regularly making the Dean’s List, she has been active in student government since her sophomore year, and now serves as class president. As a Seton Service and Leadership Scholar, she has led outreach efforts to help the homeless in Manhattan and participated in countless service projects. And if all that doesn’t keep her busy enough, Ciara is secretary and co-vocal director of the WORDS Performance Group, serves as a peer tutor in the College’s Academic Resource Center, and last year she interned for a nationally syndicated television program in Manhattan. She says, “My parents are proud of me and say they know I’ll accomplish whatever I set my mind on.

They can’t wait to see what else I’ll achieve in life.”

The Bronx native has accomplished much during her years at the Mount, and she is quick to give a measure of the credit to TRIO, the College’s federally-funded program that provides first-generation, low-income students with academic and personal counseling, career advisement, tutoring, mentoring, and a wide range of educational enhancement activities. TRIO serves students like Ciara—academically strong, motivated individuals who are at a disadvantage, either economically or culturally as the first in their families to attend college, or who have been diagnosed with a disability. TRIO is one of three programs collectively known as Mount Pathways.

Mount Pathways programs offer evidence of the College’s commitment to providing access to opportunity for every motivated student seeking a high-quality education. By opening doors to students who might otherwise be shut out, the Mount can boast of a cultural, racial, and economic diversity that is truly authentic.

Other Pathway efforts include the Mount Access Program, designed for students who demonstrate the potential and motivation to succeed in college but whose test scores and high school grades need a boost, and HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program), a partnership between the College and the New York State Education Department that was launched in the fall of 2014. Its goal is to retain and graduate promising students with limited academic and financial resources, but whose aptitude and drive make them prime candidates for success.

For Ciara, who began her TRIO experience at a pre-freshman summer program, it meant meeting new friends and developing a peer support network, as well as working with professional and faculty advisors who continue to support her every step, right through graduation. For the past three summers, Ciara has volunteered with the TRIO program, serving as peer leader helping younger students settle into life at the College. This past summer she was “promoted” to Orientation Coordinator, and spent her days planning the peer leader training and TRIO Week events that took place in August.

Student Athletes Shannon Doyle and Patrick McEnany When the College formally dedicated its new athletic field during Homecoming Weekend in October, two Mount students were among the first players to dig their cleats into the new grass for play and practice. Shannon Doyle ’15, captain of the women’s soccer team, played the inaugural match against Sage College. Patrick McEnany ’15, captain of the lacrosse team, joined teammates on the field for the ceremonial Parade of Athletes before the start of the Homecoming men’s and women’s soccer double-header. Both student-athletes have benefited from their time at the Mount, and are keenly aware of the value of a Mount education that goes well beyond what is taught in the classroom or on the playing field.

Shannon Doyle (top photo, right), a senior with a double major in business and communication, has been playing soccer since the age of four. She describes her love of the sport as “a passion,” explaining that she loves “the competition, the teammates, and the feeling of everyone pulling together to achieve a win that’s shared by everyone.” She says the sport helps her understand competition in business, and to feel comfortable taking risks and challenging adversaries.

VALUE

The Mount’s small size has been crucial to the success for this accomplished young athlete. “It’s not easy to compete in athletics with a double major,” she says, explaining that her ability to coordinate class and game schedules with her professors was key, and can be attributed to “the small-school advantage that I really appreciate.”

Patrick McEnany (bottom photo), a business major with a minor in communication, loves lacrosse. He started playing competitive sports at the age of six, and by high school he was playing football, hockey, and lacrosse. When he came to the Mount, he chose lacrosse because “it has elements of my three favorite sports.”

Patrick says he enjoys being pushed to his limits. “On the field, you have to perform to the best of your ability—not only for yourself, but also out of pride in your team and your school.” Speaking of the field, he is thrilled to be able to play on continued on page 29

the new, as-yet-unnamed athletic field, gleaming with fresh grass—real grass, not Astroturf—and cooled by breezes that come up off the Hudson River, just to the west. Patrick is convinced that the grass field—a little harder to play on because of its natural qualities—is making better athletes out of the teams that play and practice on it. “It’s definitely an advantage,” he says.

When asked how athletics have inspired him to improve his performance, both on and off the field, Patrick recalls his freshman year, when motivation dipped as the team suffered under the weight of numerous losses. “Lacrosse wasn’t taken seriously— by the team or by the students. I saw that was something I could change,” he says.

Today he sees the result of that shift—when coaches and players began exercising discipline and positive mentality. The first change he saw was with the student fans, and their enthusiasm for the teams’ renewed vigor: “Students have school pride and team pride now,” he notes. “More students show up at our games, and more are wearing the school name on their jackets and tee-shirts.” He also describes the energy that can be felt, both in the stands and on the field, at that moment during an athletic event when “students and team members from other sports are cheering you on from the stands. You can feel that energy. It boosts the team’s ability—and it can turn a game that you’re losing into a game you can win.”

Not bad advice: whatever you put into something that matters—whether it’s commitment, effort, or ability—increases its value. It’s plain to see that what the athletes, coaches, administration, and benefactors have put into the College of Mount Saint Vincent, they are reaping a hundredfold.

Centennial Society Spotlight The Centennial Society was established in 2012 to recognize alumnae/i and friends who have demonstrated the commitment and foresight to name the College as a beneficiary of a planned gift. Throughout the Mount’s history planned gifts have helped the College make significant gains—strengthening the endowment, funding scholarships, and enhancing academic programs. In recent years, more than 190 individuals have joined the ranks of the Centennial Society, whose ongoing purpose is to acknowledge planned gifts and to ensure that the College has the means to offer a consistently exceptional liberal arts education well into the future. Each has a story to tell; here we share just two of them.

DONNA MURPHY

Class of 1957 Donna Marie Murphy was a shy, book-loving teenager from Westfield, New Jersey, when she came to the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the fall of 1953. A would-be writer, she decided to major in English, although her practical father insisted she minor in Commerce—now Business. She had never wanted to be a teacher, but during her sophomore year she avidly listened as an assembly speaker spoke to the students about the field teaching. “Something clicked,” she says. “I went right down to the registrar and changed my minor to education.”

She is now in her 45th year as an educator. Since 1992 she has taught at Francis Xavier Warde School, a progressive Catholic elementary school in Chicago, where she now lives. She retired from classroom teaching and is now a tutor in the resource room that she established there. “I have a masters in reading and learning disabilities, so they put me to work with children who have difficulties in math or reading.” She still works three days a week and is part of the resource team of six. “This is my 23rd year at FXW and I love it! Our philosophy is to replicate the diversity of the Chicago population— culturally, religiously, and socio-economically. I truly began to appreciate broad-spectrum diversity at this job. It’s the real world, and a spark of God is in everyone!” she says.

About a dozen years ago, when drafting her will, Donna knew she wanted to remember the Mount. “I can still recall the anxiety of the first days, and the tears at graduation. It was an important part of my life, and I’d like others to have the same opportunities.” She has high praise for President Charles 32

L. Flynn, Jr., whose competence and passion make her feel assured that her investment in the College’s future will reap great benefits. “I’m really impressed by the wonderful travel opportunities and internships open to Mount students. Under Dr. Flynn’s leadership, the Mount has built a community of students and faculty that reflects true diversity. I continue to be a donor because of that diversity in population and programs. It was not that way when I was a student, because we knew no other way. We were all young Catholic schoolgirls, but that’s not the world. We’re all in this together.”

Asked to name a few choice memories, she is quick to reply. “I will always remember my wonderful classmates, and our silly pranks. There was a statue of Louise de Marillac that would disappear now and then, only to be discovered under the covers in someone’s bed.” She also remembers being pushed to expand her horizons. “I was asked to take on certain challenges that I never would have done of my own volition, like chairing the Junior-Senior Luncheon college of mount saint vincent

Class of 1968 Mount supporters often speak about the assistance they received during their years on the Riverdale campus, and express their hopes for the same support being available for future generations of students. For one such alumna, her generosity seems only fair—a self-proclaimed obligation to share with others what she has been so generously given. Barbara Patocka ’68 earned her degree with the support of other benefactors who gave generously to the Mount to help students in need. Now she is in a position to do the same for the next generation of students.

Asked to reveal her hopes for future generations of Mount students, Donna answers thoughtfully. “The motto of the College was, and still is, ‘Teach me goodness and discipline and knowledge.’ I hope future generations will take this to heart. Keeping an open mind is a lifelong journey. It’s not complete when you leave.”

As editor in chief of the 1957 yearbook, The Parapet, it was Donna Murphy’s task to include a parting message to the graduates. She asked her dear friend and fellow yearbook literary editor, Kathleen Barry, to pen some words for Mount graduates to live by. Kathleen obliged with the following:

“We have tried to unlock as many doors as possible.

We have been guided, directed, stimulated toward our destination… The skills, the knowledge, the experience we have acquired must last… We have the keys to a truly complete life. We hold them firmly. The doors to the future are before us. Our

prayer is that we turn the keys.”

As one of the inaugural members of the Centennial Society, Barbara has joined many other generous donors in making a commitment to planned giving that will sustain the College and future students beyond her lifetime. She recently visited the campus, where she took time to reflect on her time at the Mount, and what it means to be able to give back.

As a first-generation student from a family that often struggled to make ends meet, Barbara received a full scholarship to attend the College of Mount Saint Vincent as a freshman. The responsibility weighed heavily on her. “I was terrified. I was scared I would not do well enough to keep my scholarship. But it didn’t take long for me to undergo a transformation—instead of feeling that I was being tested and threatened, I began feeling that I was supported, and that those around me truly wanted me to succeed,” she says. “That support was key during my time at the College and has continued throughout my lifetime.”

Barbara’s experience was fundamental to her success, and even helped ease her transition when she decided to change her major. Like many undergraduate students who find it difficult to decide on a major when entering college, Barbara began her studies as a pre-med student, but soon felt the pull of other interests. In her words, she benefited from “very good relationships with faculty members who were a positive influence,” and she decided to change her major to one that matched her vision of the future—literature studies, which culminated in her B.A. in English.

There was still more change in store for Barbara Patocka. After graduation, she pursued graduate studies in English literature. Again, her widening interests led continued on page 44

GOVERNMENT GRANTS and CONTRACTS NEW SUPPORT IN 2013-2014 The College has been awarded a five-year Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Under the direction of a team led by Mary Ellen Sullivan, PhD, Chair of the Department of Teacher Education, the grant will provide $868,618 over five years to support the College’s efforts to recruit and train secondary mathematics and science teachers. Funding for the first year of the grant totals $126,000.

Participating students receive scholarship support during the final two years of the baccalaureate program, and commit to serving in high need school districts after graduation.

An Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was awarded to the College, with James Fabrizio, PhD, Associate Professor of Biology, as principal investigator. The three-year grant, totaling $195,000, will enable Dr. Fabrizio to continue his studies of late-stage maturation of spermatozoa in fruit flies, and to engage the support of students as research assistants and collaborators.

Also from the NIH, a three-year Biomedical Research and Research Training Grant was awarded to the College, with Janet Rollins, PhD, Associate Professor of Chemistry, as principal investigator. In collaboration with Brown University, Dr. Rollins will receive $15,500 for each of the next three years to engage and mentor undergraduate students in scientific research. Dr. Rollins and her team will conduct studies exploring the impact of anticancer drugs on fertility.

CONTINUING SUPPORT The College received $263,000 from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) to support the SSS TRIO Program, the fourth disbursement of a five-year award. Since 1997, TRIO funding has enabled the College to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students each year.

The College’s NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) grant continues for the second of five years. Eleven students received scholarship assistance and participated in enrichment activities led by Patricia Grove, PhD, principal investigator, and Pamela Kerrigan, PhD co-principal investigator. More than $90,000 was allocated for 2013-2014. Over the course of the five-year grant period, the College will receive $599,956.

The Elizabeth Seton Library continues to benefit from the The New York State DOE’s Coordinated Collection Development Aid Program. In 2013-2014, the program awarded $5,282 to support the acquisition of academic collections.

PRIVATE GIFTS AND AWARDS The Charles A. Mastronardi Foundation made a grant of $50,000, toward its pledge to the College. The Foundation’s generosity continues to benefit capital projects and provide scholarship support for deserving students.

The Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation continued its generous support of the College with an award of $25,000 for nursing student scholarships.

The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $16,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students.

The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities furthered its decades-long philanthropy with an award of $15,000, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob. The grant supported scholarships for nursing students.

The Sisters of Charity of New York awarded two ministry grants totaling $8,777 to the College in 2013-2014. The first grant, under the direction of Rob Jacklosky, PhD, Associate Professor of English, supported a visiting author event series.

The second award, secured by Jean Flannelly, S.C., PhD, Executive Director of Mission, will help establish a series of Heritage Tours for faculty, staff, and administrators. The summer program will be funded by a $2.3 million Developing HispanicServing Institutions Program grant (also known as Title V) from the U.S. Department of Education.

The summer program for Mount Pathway students is just one initiative made possible by the Title V grant.

Among other benefits, it will fund enhancements to the College’s academic advising and tutoring programs and will strengthen the Oxley Career Education Program, funding additional staff to help students prepare for exploratory internships earlier in their academic careers and to guide them in developing essential skills, such as resume development, networking, and interview techniques.

For Ciara, whose friendly confidence belies her admission that she grew more comfortable at making friends among her classmates and upperclassmen through her involvement with TRIO, success in life can be traced to success in college.

She is grateful for this support, and concludes, “It was through my fellow students that I was able to learn about the opportunities I have taken advantage of, both here and outside the Mount.”

It’s a valuable life lesson to realize that one’s chances for success are improved by opening up to opportunities and being connected to a supportive academic community.

Edna Sandroni Ulasewicz lives in Pasadena, Calif. She has three children and six grandchildren. She also volunteers for the Pasadena Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, is active in her parish, and serves as president of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society at Saint Bede’s Church.

Linda Heimerdinger developed a system of teaching art history through applied arts, had a business as an executive search consultant, and has

worked on many community service projects, such as helping adopt rural communities in Sri Lanka for selfdevelopment efforts. She also enjoys traveling.

Judith Nyegaard Hoffman and her husband have three children and six grandchildren. She volunteers at a local soup kitchen and for Meals on Wheels.

Eleanor Fleming Millar taught math for 40 years at Cardozo High School in New York City and Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. She is now a volunteer math teacher at an alternative school in Naples, Fla. She enjoys spending time with her 10 grandchildren.

Theresa Ferrerio Petty has spent time traveling the world with her husband, Monroe. She volunteers with the CASA for Children program, and is also a member of the Charlottesville Women’s Committee.

Francesca Paula Graziano Piluso works in real estate in Scarsdale, N.Y. Rosemary Hoey Pisano and her husband Bill have recently become grandparents. She is also the chair of the board of directors for Primary Source, a professional development resource for teachers.

Patricia Hayes Quattrochio and her husband Donnie still reside at the same location, watching their family expand, including the arrival of twin great-grandsons last January.

Christiane R. Quinif retired from the NYC public school system in August 2003. She volunteers for the Special Events Committee at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Maureen Hickey Radl retired as a teacher and English professor. She currently volunteers in Cragsmoor, N.Y., and is an officer at the Cragsmoor Historical Society. She spends part of the year in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico teaching English to local children.

Roberta Sabitini Ronan is currently volunteering in her community and church, studying Italian, taking care of grandkids, and working as a legal secretary for her husband.

Regina Frey Shultz and her husband enjoy skiing with their children and grandchildren at Grand Teton Mountain in Wyoming. She also is the docent at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Katherine Schlife Smith and her husband Bruce celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. They spend their free time visiting their grandchildren.

Maureen Stack Diffley and her husband George have two daughters and three grandchildren, Katie, Molly, and Bridget.

Ann Honeycutt Sweeney enjoys traveling to visit her three children in Texas, Connecticut, and Florida.

Kathleen Reilly Tokar and her husband Richard live in Arizona. Next year they will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Kathleen Tuzzeo Pfeiffer currently teaches ballroom dancing, and owns Kathy’s Kreations in Mineral, Va. Annette Musco Volino recently traveled to Costa Rica where she and her husband Ronald hiked in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

Jerilynn Filip Volkman retired two years ago and enjoys spending quality time traveling with her husband, and visiting with their five grandchildren.

Suzanne Ellen Wallin, S.C. volunteers at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (Yonkers) in the pastoral care department, and serves as a Eucharistic Minister at the hospital and nursing home.

Alma Ippolito Walshak retired from teaching in 2004. She and her husband live in an active adult community where she runs a senior advisory club. She also enjoys spending time with her grandson in California.

Patricia (Pat) Restaino Bergeron lives in Winter Springs, Fla. with her husband Ken. They have two children and six grandchildren. She has retired, and does volunteer work at a local VA Medical Center.

Patricia Harris Berrill retired from teaching French from East Hartford High School where she taught for 35 years. She lives in in Glastonbury, Conn., with her husband Dave.

They have two children and four grandchildren.

Janie Rohr Bradstreet lives in Kittery, Maine with her husband Kevin. They have one son, Matthew. She has had a long career as a teacher, and is on her way to reaching her goal of 50 years as an educator before she retires.

Anne Casamassa lives and teaches in Yonkers, N.Y. Mary Anne Gerve Chandler lives in Frederick, Md., and both she and her husband have retired. They enjoy traveling and have a family home in Maine. She also volunteers in an adult ESL program.

Mary Bowles Curtis lives in Pennington, N.J., and is currently a librarian and media specialist at Notre Dame High School. She has three children and two grandchildren.

Lynn Ann Dalton, S.C. is the theology chairperson at St. Catharine’s Academy in the Bronx and teaches 48

She just celebrated her Golden Anniversary as a Sister of Charity and 46 years as a teacher. She has two brothers and one sister, all married with children.

Barbara Hines Fagan lives in Basye, Va., and is currently working as a university supervisor for practicum and student teachers in the Shenandoah Valley area. Barbara has two sons who also live in Virginia.

Diane Lyne Gasparrini lives in Valley Cottage, N.Y., and is an adjunct professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College. She retired from teaching high school in 2012.

Claire-Anne Gray is a New York City resident who has retired from her career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Diane Benson Levy lives is in Montgomery, Md. She is a student of Byzantine style of Iconography, takes courses in oil painting, and is active in many arts organizations. Mary Ann Scheideler Murray has a long volunteer history working for her parish, St. Eugene’s, in Yonkers, N.Y. She has two daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth.

Regina Connor DeFrancisco is an active American Red Cross volunteer at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and has brought an art program to wounded service members. She and her husband Jerry have two daughters, Geralyn and Martha.

Kathleen Stoddart Drucker is currently a school nurse at the Convent of the Sacred Heart on 91st Street in New York City. She and her husband Joe have two children, Timothy and Mary.

Linda Malang Gimlett and her husband reside in Delaware but spend weekdays in New York City where she volunteers with the Guild for the Blind. They have three children and one grandchild.

Catherine Donohue Hickey lives in Michigan with her husband, Bob, and their daughter, Caitlin. They also have a son who lives in Tennessee. She has been involved with local schools for the last 20 years.

Robin Guizzetti Jeffers is a high school math teacher who is looking forward to retiring and doing volunteer work with her church. She has three children, Greg, Patrick, and Lindsay.

Pat Furlong McCarthy resides in Laurel, N.Y., with her husband Chris.

She retired from the Millburn, N.J., school district as a kindergarten teacher in 2007, and now enjoys babysitting her grandchildren and caring for her father.

Sharon Minder is currently an automation test engineer and has three patents to her credit. She has been married for 31 years.

Linda Pilz Napoletano taught middle and high school level English in Connecticut for 30 years. She has directed almost 100 theatrical productions, and was the director’s assistant for two Broadway plays.

She is now a board member for World Without Hate, an organization that promotes worldwide compassion, forgiveness, and healing. She and her husband Richard spend their winters in West Palm Beach, Fla. Carolyn Schanck Rehm has written several children’s books. She and her husband Steve have three children, Catherine, Tim, and Emily.

Margaret (Peggy) Sheridan Rupnick and her husband Stan are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year. She works part-time in the religious education department of St. Mary’s Church in East Islip, N.Y.

Linda Harrigan Searles lives in Maryland and is a strategic account manager for ADP. Lillian Mittl Simpson became a grandmother in 2010. When she isn’t working, she and her husband Larry spend time on the North Fork of Long Island.

Christine Reeves Van Ullen is the vice president of the Albany, N.Y., chapter of the Ladies of Charity, the oldest volunteer service group in the U.S. She and her husband Steve have two sons, Greg and Will.

Susan Clabby Young is a public school teacher in Queens. She is very active in her church’s pre-Cana program, and is a lector and Eucharistic minister. She has five children who are all working and happy.
