LETTER FROM THE SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT Dear Alumnae/i and Friends, The College of Mount Saint Vincent began 2020 anticipating a memorable year. In January, we were planning to celebrate Charles L. Flynn, Jr.’s two decades of visionary leadership. We are indebted and deeply grateful to President Flynn for his extraordinary stewardship of our mission, which enabled the College to flourish during his tenure. His achievements position us for a future of promise and opportunity. We were also looking forward to honoring Mount Trustee Susan Chiaviello DiDonato ’82 and her husband Gerald DiDonato ’83, Ph.D. at the annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner, celebrating the opening of Aquino Hall, and marking the extraordinary success the Ad Lux capital campaign.

These momentous occasions, along with annual rituals commemorating life at the Mount, were foregone in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The absence of these events is, of course, overshadowed by all that has been lost. We mourn the passing of Sr. Patricia McGowan, Ed.D., beloved Professor Emerita of Communication, and John Keanna, Adjunct Professor of Accounting, as well as the alumnae/i and extended members of the Mount community who have been lost to this illness.

The unexpected, however, has also given us new things to celebrate. We can be proud of the skill and good nature demonstrated by students and faculty as they transitioned to remote learning during the spring. We can be proud of staff who, despite the added challenge of distance, found ways to ensure the health, welfare, and education of our students. We can be proud of all the members of this community. From nurses and healthcare providers serving in hospitals and medical facilities, to teachers finding endlessly creative ways to nurture their students, to the many acts of volunteerism, community service, and countless kindnesses, you continue to advance the College’s commitment to the common good.

The outpouring of extraordinary support you all have provided to the College this year underscores all that is special about the Mount. Your overwhelming response to the giving challenge from trustee Cristóbal Conde and his wife Kamaryn pushed the Annual Fund beyond $2.1 million—a full million dollars more than the previous record. Your generosity will ensure the students we serve today do not have their experience or potential stifled by the impact of the pandemic.

While 2020 presents ongoing and unprecedented challenges, they are balanced by the extraordinary gift of this community which sustains and supports our efforts. I thank you for your selfless devotion to this College and to each other as we move forward together.

AD LUX CAMPAIGN Dear Alumnae/i and Friends,

support (Annual Fund, Scholarship Tribute Dinner, and Mott Street Scholarships) during the final two years of the campaign.

The Ad Lux campaign, with its goal of $42 million, is the most significant fundraising initiative the College has ever undertaken. Despite that ambitious goal, when announcing the campaign in 2017, I hoped that we might reach $50 million. I am delighted, but ultimately not really surprised, that the devotion of Mount Saint Vincent alumnae/i and friends pushed the campaign well past that mark—to $70.7 million.

Ad Lux sought the financial and physical plant resources necessary to ensure the continued vitality of the College and its defining commitments—authentic opportunity and exceptional education well-grounded in the liberal arts. Through your generous support, you have demonstrated once again that you are stewards of the Mount’s mission: its values, traditions, and legacy.

TOWARD THE LIGHT As we reflect on the events of these past few months and usher in the new year, we remain ever hopeful for the continued healing of our suffering world. This year has brought with it many unfortunate and unexpected hardships. The COVID-19 virus wreaked havoc upon our weary and vulnerable globe. At the College, the effects of the pandemic have been wide-ranging. Financial threats to our mission continue to bring forth consequential repercussions across campus as state and federal governments decrease funding, events are postponed, and new programs are canceled.

Recently, New York State announced that it is withholding funding for several higher education support programs by 20 percent—including the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). This critically impacts the College’s budget and puts strain on our students and our families, most of whom are already experiencing financial distress.

While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other hardships experienced this year at Mount Saint Vincent will be long-lasting, the successful close of the Ad Lux capital campaign comes at an opportunistic time—providing the resources needed to create stability at the College amongst the uncertainty of our current world circumstance.

The Ad Lux campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the College’s history, was established to ensure Mount Saint Vincent continues to have the resources needed to offer an exceptional liberal arts education in the Catholic tradition to talented students of every background.

Announced during Reunion and Homecoming Weekend 2017, the campaign—with a goal of $42,000,000—set out to provide support for several of the College’s strategic priorities.

And not only was the $42 million goal achieved—it was shattered.

The campaign closed at a record-breaking $70,772,460—securing gifts, pledges, and grants in excess of $40 million for the College’s endowment and strengthening our founding mission.

resources needed to provide generous scholarships to 100 percent of its students. The campaign has resulted in the creation of 27 new endowed scholarship funds and the commitment of over $30 million in endowed scholarship funding, including the largest gift in the College’s history—a generous bequest of $7,500,000 from the late Martha E. Fedorko ’56, M.D. Martha was a proud and accomplished alumna with an extensive career as a medical research scientist and community health practitioner.

Throughout her career in health care, she treated each patient with compassion, empathy, and kindness. Martha’s love for medicine was her service. Working on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, her patients came from minority and immigrant backgrounds. Many did not have insurance or access to medications. Many could not support their family’s needs. The spirit of service was instilled in Martha during her time at the Mount through the Sisters of Charity and she treated many of these immigrant families for free, which she did quietly and reverently.

“Martha loved the Mount,” remarked Madeleine Melkonian, Senior Vice President for Admission and External Relations. “She remained connected to the College and was loyal to her alma mater, giving consistently throughout her life. The gift and magnitude of her estate came as a surprise, as it reflects her humble but stalwart commitment to quiet generosity. We are greatly thankful for it. Her legacy is sure to carry on as her gift sustains scholarships and financial aid awards for talented and deserving students.”

The Ad Lux campaign also included endowment growth to further support both the Mott Street Scholarship Program and Seton Service and Leadership Program. These two programs, rooted in the ministries of the Sisters of Charity, provide financial aid to students who have overcome foster care or homelessness or show promise and leadership as servant leaders in a turbulent world. continued on page 8

“The Ad Lux campaign had an ambitious goal,” said Steven Hayes, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “We are all thrilled to have significantly surpassed it. The College’s alumnae/i and friends recognized the remarkable strength of the College’s academic programs and learning opportunities. Through their generosity, they selflessly committed themselves to ensuring the good work that takes place each day at Mount Saint Vincent continues for generations of students to come.”

The name Ad Lux, Latin for “toward the light,” illuminates Mount Saint Vincent’s commitment to making the transformative benefits of a higher education available to students of diverse backgrounds and provide them with the essential foundation needed to lead lives of accomplishment, leadership, and service. In order to do this, the Ad Lux campaign focused on initiatives with an aim to build on the legacy of the Sisters of Charity, grow the College’s enrollment, and enhance programmatic depth.

Ad Lux sought to raise substantial funding to support two main areas of the College’s strategic plan: build a credible endowment and support essential campus enhancements.

Growing the endowment for scholarships ensures the College continues to create and expand access to educational opportunity, especially as families face financial hardship in the wake of COVID-19. Now, more than ever, the College is equipped with the

Collectively, they have led over 30,000 hours of service, engaging the Mount community with organizations that address the immediate needs of the disenfranchised and most vulnerable—the disabled, elderly, homeless, working poor, and youth—while pursuing advocacy and policy work to address the causes of inequities.

Funding secured through Ad Lux has allowed the College to establish its first endowed professorships—five in total, and a sixth partially funded—celebrating our most accomplished faculty members while providing the financial resources needed to enhance the College’s ability to recruit and retain dedicated teachers and scholars. The first was established by the late Jean Ames DeNunzio ’55, ’80, trustee emerita, and her family to not only celebrate her devotion to the College, but also the Mount’s standards of teaching excellence which Jean worked tirelessly to champion.

Jean served the College with fervor and justice, emulating the charism of the Sisters of Charity. Throughout her years on the Board of Trustees, Jean consistently advocated for the students and their teachers. She understood that education is at the center of this institution—and not just academic knowledge.

At the Mount, students receive a holistic education through the liberal arts in goodness, discipline, and knowledge. Giving back to the place she called home was not something Jean felt she was obligated to do, it was simply what was right.

“The Mount was an enduring passion of my mother’s,” said Peter DeNunzio, trustee of the College, chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee, and son of Jean Ames DeNunzio. “During her tenure as a trustee of the College, she served the Mount’s mission and its students with diligence.

She introduced our family to the dedicated and passionate educators at Mount Saint Vincent. We were proud to make this commitment to the Ad Lux campaign, as a tribute to her affection, in order to ensure outstanding faculty remain at the heart of this institution. The overwhelming success of the campaign proves her feelings are shared by a large number of her fellow graduates. As a trustee, I am inspired, humbled, and gratified by the Mount community and its rarified commitment to academic excellence and opportunity.”

The need for endowed professorship funding echoes the College’s commitment to making a higher education available to an underserved population, made possible by the work of the selfless women of the Sisters of Charity. At their core, the Sisters of Charity are educators. They are mentors. They are teachers. The Ad Lux campaign sought to advance the example of the tradition of the Sisters of Charity by supporting academic life at the College. These endowed professorships honor all of the Sisters of Charity who have served the College in their long history, applauding their faithfulness to exceptional teaching and learning.

In addition to the Jean Ames DeNunzio Chair for Faculty Excellence, other endowed professorships supported through the Ad Lux campaign include the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary Chair—endowed in part through the generosity of trustee and alumna Rosemary Berkery ’75 and her family.

Rosemary has long supported the liberal arts education at the heart of Mount Saint Vincent. She earned a B.A. in English from the College and went on to have a successful career in finance with Merrill Lynch & Co.—a true testament to the versatility of the liberal arts. Her gift, along with generous bequests from Catherine Martin ’46 and Cordelia Merolla ’38, will permanently endow this professorship honoring the Sisters of Charity’s service and leadership upon the 200th anniversary of their arrival in New York, upholding their tradition of delivering an exceptional liberal arts education to all students.

Funding was received from an anonymous friend of the College to support the third endowed professorship—the Ad Lux Chair—which extols Mount Saint Vincent’s dedication to exceptional scholarship and education grounded in the liberal arts.

The fourth chair, the Virginia A. LiVolsi, M.D. Professorship in Biology, is to be awarded to a midlevel or senior faculty member who is a teacher of biological science and whose research focus is in an area of biology which promotes the understanding of human physiology or disease. The professorship is made possible as the result of a generous planned gift from class of 1965 alumna, Virginia LiVolvsi, M.D., a distinguished physician and biomedical scholar. Dr. LiVolvsi holds dual appointments as a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Professor of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

A commitment for a fifth chair, to be established at a later date, has been received from an anonymous member of the Mount community.

Additionally, partial funding was secured for a sixth faculty professorship, which will be for faculty achievement in literature.

The Ad Lux campaign also included endowments for the studentfaculty research program and the Oxley Discovery Internships program—meriting awards for exceptional students to forgo paid summer employment and dedicate time to participate in research or internship programs.

Gifts from passionate alumnae/i and friends like Martha, Rosemary, Catherine, Cordelia, Virginia, and the DeNunzio family reflect the mission entrusted to the College by the Sisters of Charity, ingrained in the facets of service and humility. Sizeable endowment growth affords Mount Saint Vincent the opportunity to replace the financial value of the work performed by the Sisters of Charity in their service to the institution since 1847. For decades, through their selfless efforts, the Sisters of Charity subsidized every student’s tuition, ensuring a Mount Saint Vincent education was affordable for all students, regardless of their family means. The Mount continues to live that commitment and value today. A credible financial endowment will enable the College to maintain the quality of programs while controlling the growth of tuition and fees, effectively sustaining the Sisters’ work in making an exceptional education available for deserving students of all backgrounds.

Ad Lux also raised funds to support essential campus enhancements—including both the final phase of the renovation of the Science Hall and the construction of new state-of-the-art nursing laboratories in Aquino Hall.

The renovation of the Science Hall was essential to sustain the quality of research and scholarship that takes place on campus. The new laboratories create an environment that integrates the latest simulation and web-based technologies with inquiry based-methods to keep students engaged and competitive. The Ad Lux campaign called for specialized funding to support the overhaul of the microbiology laboratory—the first since 1953—dedicated to Professor Emerita of Biology Sr. Mary Edward Zipf ’62, Ph.D. continue on page 24

CONDE GIVING CHALLENGE IN SPRING 2020, as the scope of challenges facing the College due to the COVID-19 pandemic became clear, the Conde Family Foundation, led by Mount Trustee Cristóbal Conde and his wife Kamaryn, made an award of $500,000 to the College. They challenged the Mount community to match the gift. The following community members selflessly contributed unrestricted money in amounts greater than the previous fiscal year to fulfill the challenge. Together, the Mount community pushed the Annual Fund over $2.1 million—a whole million more than the prior giving record.

IOANNA VISVIKI, PH.D., Ad Lux Professor of Biology, is known as a tough teacher who expects her students to work hard. She insists it’s the best way to attract more students to science. Her first strategy is to offer stimulating lectures that link to current events, thus offering a wider perspective of the world. “I’m cultivating a work ethic,” she says. “Students need to master responsibility and deadlines. That’s where the reputation for toughness comes from. Finally, I help them strengthen their analytical skills and their ability to substantiate a position with evidence. This is crucial to success in any profession.”

The opportunities afforded by the endowed professorship have widened Dr. Visviki’s ability to collaborate with colleagues around the world. Last spring, she and her students presented virtually at a population conference, an experience that enriched them all. She notes that students come away from each conference with improved skills in asking questions and testing hypotheses, generating and analyzing data, presenting their ideas effectively, and handling criticism with an open mind.

As an evolutionary biologist, Dr. Visviki is studying a cohort of Sisters of Charity born in the nineteenth century. “Every organism has limited amounts of energy,” she says. “It’s a tradeoff. If the organism is focused on defending itself against pathogens, it might have less energy for other processes. Which is more important—longevity or legacy?”

As with any scientific question, the search for answers may turn out to be as rewarding as the solution.

JEAN AMES DENUNZIO CHAIR FOR FACULTY EXCELLENCE Now in his 34th year of teaching at the Mount, EDWARD ZUKOWSKI, PH.D., Jean Ames DeNunzio Professor of Religious Studies, delights in the lively debates that occur with regularity in his classroom. Recognizing that not all students are believers in a common faith or even particularly interested in religion at the outset, Dr. Zukowski instead tries to sift through the vast body of knowledge about his subject and determine what’s relevant to this particular class.

Not everything we talk about “is related to their career path or

material goals. We talk about lives.

What am I living for, how do I handle problems, what do I do about evil in the world?

”

He says he often receives letters from former students who thank him for his approach, and express relief that they were never pressured to adopt a particular belief. Instead, he says, most of his students eventually warm to the nature of the material and apply it in their own lives, which helps them find more meaning and direction.

“We have many heavy discussions about respect for others, the nature of love, what real charity is, and we examine how that ties into God,” he says. “Even for students who consider themselves atheists, there is still a need for a connection with others and with something outside themselves that they can call by any name. What we talk about pertains to the whole person. Because we’re not just bodies, we’re souls.”

JAMES FABRIZIO, PH.D., the Virginia A. LiVolsi, M.D. Professor in Biology, has mentored dozens of undergraduate students in his lab. Together they study Drosophila, the fruit fly, whose genetic similarities to humans make it an exceptional organism for study.

Using their professor’s research as a teaching tool, students carry out experiments in his lab, learning scientific methodology and laboratory techniques.

“Even more important, my students learn how to talk about their work to the general public, which often mistrusts or misunderstands science,” he says.

According to Dr. Fabrizio, rarely has there been a greater need for scientists who can clearly articulate the urgency and importance of their work.

For Dr. Fabrizio, teaching offers countless opportunities to plant the seeds of an indelible passion for science. “I tell my students we will discover things together. I encourage them if they’re struggling. And above all, I try to be kind,” he says. “I want them to know I’m on their side. If students see their professor is invested in their success, they’ll pay that forward. Sometimes students say to me, ‘How can I ever repay you?’ And I say, do the same for your students when you become a teacher.”

Dr. Fabrizio becomes animated when he speaks of the undergraduates who have passed through his laboratory over the years. Calling them “early-career scientists,” he says, “Undergraduates are just waiting to be inspired by a passionate and dedicated scientist with a zeal for teaching and mentorship.” He might well be describing himself.

SISTERS OF CHARITY 200TH ANNIVERSARY CHAIR AMIR NIKNEJAD, PH.D., the Sisters of Charity 200th Anniversary Associate Professor of Mathematics, is a consummate math teacher. Just ask his students.

While continuing his research in computational molecular design aimed at developing synthetic drugs that are kinder to the environment, Dr. Niknejad also teaches calculus, statistics, and algebra at the Mount. His students describe him as a dedicated teacher who keeps his door open to them. To this humble, soft-spoken academic, it’s much simpler. “There’s no magic to teaching math—my main goal is helping students believe in themselves.”

Dr. Niknejad has his working-class parents to thank for the modest beginnings that ignited his empathy.

As a college student, he worked part time to support his family—a situation faced by many Mount students. During office visits, he will often get up from behind his desk to sit beside the student and put them at ease. As a result:

They open up. They share their “anxieties and their struggles.

They know I’ve had them too. ” His students know they can trust him with their worries and their dreams, and he finds it supremely rewarding to remind them of their strengths. At the start of every semester, he purposely makes a mistake on the blackboard and waits for the students to call out the error. To his thinking, the practice lets them feel capable of speaking up when something is not right and shows them it’s okay to be human. That kind of student—and teacher—will always be in high demand.

Sr. Mary Edward had the quintessential qualities of an educator. For 50 years she served the College with diligence and passion—instilling in the minds and hearts of her students a genuine love of science. She had a ready sense of humor, generosity with her time and talent, and boundless energy. The new microbiology lab, dedicated (along with a previously renovated lab in honor of Professor Emerita of Biology Sr. Kathleen Tracey ’48, Ph.D.) before her passing, is a tribute to Sr. Mary Edward and her years of devotion to the institution and the students she loved so well.

With the generous support of alumnae/i and friends, funds raised through the Ad Lux campaign also turned a general-purpose classroom into a physics/tissue culture laboratory, created space for original student-faculty research, and funded an all-new student support and advising space.

“Mount Saint Vincent's science programs spark both student curiosity and capability in the scientific method,” said Gail Vance Civille ’65, a trustee of the College and graduate of the chemistry program.

“Refined curriculums, ample research opportunities for students, and most importantly, the talents of dedicated faculty members such as Sr. Mary Edward Zipf, distinguish our programs among the best in the region. I am proud to have supported the Ad Lux campaign and the renovation of the microbiology labs in honor of Sr. Mary Edward. The renovated labs and facilities will ensure Mount students have the opportunity to follow Sr. Mary Edward’s example—leading successful careers in the sciences while serving as faithful advocates of human dignity. I applaud all my fellow alumnae/i and friends who gave a gift in support of the College and its students.”

The nursing labs in Aquino Hall, which is nearing completion, will help keep the College’s nursing program competitive among the best in the nation and support advanced clinical training for students— especially as hospital placements become difficult to obtain as a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

Frequently recognized for student success, the College’s nursing programs are rigorous and have high standards of accountability.

Expanding its nursing simulation facilities—made possible in part through a generous $125,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation, Inc.— enables the College to stay on the cutting edge of the profession.

Through updated instructional technologies—including patient simulators, live-action simulation, and observation areas—the laboratories will allow students to master the essential skills for several nursing specializations, including clinical assessment and adult/primary care, as well as pediatric, maternity, and community health nursing.

The staggering generosity of the College’s alumnae/i and friends helped propel the Ad Lux campaign far past its initial goal, allowing the College to move beyond the two physical plant projects originally outlined at the start of the campaign.

The locker rooms in the Peter Jay Sharp Athletic and Recreation Center are currently receiving a much-needed facelift—ensuring the College’s NCAA Division III athletic teams have the resources needed to remain competitive with other members of the Skyline Conference. The renovation of the locker rooms only further enhances the College’s efforts to develop outstanding athletic and recreation spaces on campus—which began with the opening of the Sharp Center in 2009— providing Mount students with the facilities needed to grow, learn, and compete.

Lastly, with a $500,000 New York State and Municipal Facilities Grant helped secured by New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, the College has plans to renovate the Elizabeth Seton Library by creating an integrated student support, tutoring, and study environment. The library will now be home to the Oxley Integrated Advising Program, including the three Mount Pathways programs: the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), the Mount Access Program (MAP), and the TRiO Student Support Services.

Each of these three programs is designed for students who have the potential and drive to further their education, but due to limited academic and/or financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. These programs echo the mission at the heart of the Sisters of Charity. Students in HEOP, MAP, and TRiO receive supplementary academic and personal counseling, career advisement, tutoring, mentoring, and a wide range of educational enhancement activities. With updated facilities and programming space in the library, these programs, and more importantly, the students who take part in them, can flourish.

Campus enhancements and facilities updates are all a substantial step forward in expanding the way Mount Saint Vincent plays a vital role in the lives of its students and their families. The Sisters of Charity set the groundwork for our beautiful 70-acre campus along the Hudson River—laying the cornerstones for historically preserved structures. The College is committed to both maintaining and expanding on the work of the Sisters of Charity and their vision for Mount Saint Vincent, ensuring our residence halls, classrooms, and programmatic spaces serve students for decades to come.

For alumna MARY ELLEN SULLIVAN ’85, PH.D., Jean Ames DeNunzio Associate Professor of Teacher Education, Mount Saint Vincent is more than just a classroom—it’s her home. “I remember standing at the Point with my family on the day of my graduation,” she says. “Leaving Mount Saint Vincent was like leaving behind a piece of my heart. In that very moment, I knew I would be back.”

Dr. Sullivan has a special connection with each student she teaches. A first-generation college student herself, she understands the challenges many Mount students face as they struggle to balance their academic careers with family and personal life.

“Mount students are inspiring,” she says. “They push me every day to be the best educator I can be. And as much as they tell me I teach them, they have taught me far, far more.”

Teaching K-12 students for 15 years before joining the Mount faculty, Dr. Sullivan is dedicated to extending the College’s mission by ensuring an exceptional education is available to all students. As the cofounder of the Charter High School for Law and Social Justice, she spearheaded an innovative community partnership that not only brought quality instruction to an underserved student population in the Bronx, but also created new opportunities for the College’s aspiring educators to gain enhanced practicum teaching experience.

Dr. Robert Suriano, Associate Professor of Biology, provides exciting and authentic lab experiences with Mount students in the renovated microbiology laboratory, dedicated to the late Mary Edward Zipf ’62, S.C.

MEET OUR HONOREES Susan Chiaviello DiDonato ’82 and Gerald (Gerry) DiDonato ’83 met at Mount Saint Vincent in the fall of 1979. Susan, a bubbly and active sophomore, and Gerry, a freshman transfer, moved in the same circles for a while. They began dating the next summer and have been inseparable ever since—especially as they’ve challenged and supported one another as they’ve built impressive careers.

Susan, an accomplished marketer and communicator, was recruited to WPP’s Health and Wellness Division in 2016, where her skillful management and keen eye for talent drew the attention of higherups. Earlier this year, she was promoted to Senior Vice President for Human Resources Advisory/Business Integrity at WPP, the world’s largest advertising company.

Four years after graduating from the Mount, Gerry earned a doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from Indiana University. Now, in his fourth decade with Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Gerry maintains his enthusiasm for his job as Senior Director, Regulatory Sciences – CMC Biologics and for the team of professionals he supervises.

Both Susan and Gerry are proudest of their most enduring and rewarding collaboration—their three children. Each praises the other’s involvement and devotion to helping their kids grow into kind, responsible, successful adults with full lives and generous hearts. “I’m very proud of them and what they’ve accomplished,” Gerry says. “They are our legacy.”

In 2019, Susan joined the Mount’s Board of Trustees after having she what she calls “a life-changing conversation with President Flynn. I was deeply moved by his conviction that no one who wants an education should be held back by their socioeconomic status.” Susan and Gerry thought and prayed over her decision to join the board. “It’s not a commitment I would make for just any organization,” she says. “For both of us, the College of Mount Saint Vincent really matters—what they are doing, what they are investing in—and that’s the future of education.”

THE SPIRIT OF CHARITY Most graduates of Mount Saint Vincent have a story to tell about a Sister of Charity who enriched their life. Whether it was in the classroom, around the lunch table, or while walking the hills of campus, the Sisters of Charity have had—and continue to have—a profound impact on the lives of students and thousands of our alumnae/i. The Seton Service and Leadership Program (SSLP)—a four-year, full room and board scholarship created through the sponsorship of the Sisters of Charity—is awarded to students who show dedication and promise in the areas of academics, service, and leadership. Students in the SSLP mentor one another both as individuals and as a cohort, serve at various ministries in New York City and across the country, and spend time in weekly reflective gatherings.

Program participants join a community of like-minded peers who serve together and embrace the mission of the Sisters of Charity—carrying on the legacy and ministries of the Sisters through the spirit of Saints Elizabeth Ann Seton, Vincent de Paul, and Louise de Marillac.

Since 2011, 46 SSLP alums and 35 current SSLP students have participated in over 25,000 hours of community service across the globe.

Some students partner with the Midnight Run organization, based in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., to deliver food and clothing to the homeless population on the streets of Manhattan at 1 a.m. Others raise environmental awareness through advocacy events and clean-ups with the NYC Parks Department. One student, Jennifer Puac ’21, even traveled to Ecuador on a Gilman Scholarship to study and serve, mentoring children in a rural neighborhood.

Many Seton Service and Leadership Program participants continue their devotion to service even after they leave the Mount’s campus—a true testament to the College’s remarkable Leaders in Service initiative. These alumnae/i are carrying on the mission of the Sisters of Charity in their chosen career fields and spreading the Spirit of Charity in their daily lives.

Alumna Amy Fox ’15 currently works as a social worker for the New York City Department of Education at an elementary school in Jamaica, Queens. It was through her time in the SSLP that she found her passion for social work.

“Volunteering as a member of the Seton Service and Leadership Program helped deepen my commitment to service and led me into the field of social work,” explained Amy. “Participating in service further taught me the incredible impact one person can make on another person’s life. I carry this lesson with me throughout my career as a social worker, but also in my life as a sister, daughter, friend, girlfriend, and even as a stranger to others.”

For alum Owen Smith ’18, all paths seemed to lead back to Riverdale.

After taking a year to work as an account manager for a food distribution company in Manhattan, Owen returned home to Mount Saint Vincent to work as a graduate assistant in the College’s Office of Mission and Ministry—mentoring new members of the SSLP. He also made a commitment as an Associate of the Sisters of Charity in September 2018.

Owen is now working as an Assistant Director in the Office of Peace, Justice, and Integrity of Creation for the Sisters of Charity of New York— continuing to foster and build upon the connection he made with the Sisters during his time in the SSLP. continued on page 37

“My experience as a member of the SSLP introduced me to the Vincentian charism, provided leadership opportunities in ministries to people experiencing homelessness and our veterans, and gave me a built-in community of friends who were also committed to the mission of the Sisters of Charity,” remarked Owen.

“Through the SSLP, I was able to grow and become more flexible, responsive, and collaborative when approaching different areas of service. I’m lucky to still be so connected to the Sisters today—working alongside them to advocate for human dignity and respond to the signs of the times.”

Service at the Mount is not just an extracurricular activity—it’s an essential component of the College’s most fundamental values and the charism of the Sisters of Charity. Service to the local community extends far beyond participants in the SSLP, engaging all members of the campus community in conversations about our global commitment to human dignity.

The second program, the Mott Street Scholarship Program, is named for the Sisters of Charity’s first mission—the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum— which was established in 1817 on the corner of Prince and Mott Streets in New York City. The program serves talented students who have persevered through foster care or homelessness and who are educationally and emotionally ready for college.

Social services and public support available to these individuals typically end when they reach 18 years of age. At this point, many of these young people find themselves on their own—trying to figure out the next step when all else is in flux.

Funding for the Mott Street Scholarship covers tuition, room and board, fees, textbooks, a laptop, and insurance for each student in the program.

Additionally, the Mount provides supplementary academic and emotional counseling services and the fundamental tools for success.

“Mott Street Scholars have experienced unimaginable traumas and have been forced to make decisions no young person should have to make,” remarked President Charles L. Flynn, Jr. “There is no other program like this in the United States. We are transforming lives. And we are giving individuals an authentic opportunity to be fully self-reliant and accomplish their goals.”

In 2015, the College began collaborating with Covenant House New York, an organization that cares for and shelters homeless and trafficked youth to identify young people eager to attend college, but who lack the financial resources and support to get there. Partnerships have since developed with other organizations in the New York metro area—including Covenant House New Jersey and Rising Ground.

Meeting the needs of each Mott Street Scholar is costly—exceeding $60,000 per year—but year-round housing for all four years of study finally gives these students a home here at Mount Saint Vincent.

“The College has a goal to enroll 10 new Mott Street Scholars each year.

It is ambitious. But these young people are among the finest and most committed students the Mount has seen in its long history, and we are ready to support them in all their endeavors,” added Dr. Flynn.

Mott Street Scholars are immersed in college life, complete with the rich and varied opportunities that all Mount students enjoy.

There are currently 23 Mott Street scholars living and studying on campus.

Ninety-five percent of them are in good academic standing. They give back over 500 hours of volunteer service to the local community each year.

“

I participated in the Mount’s first Sleep Out last year and it was a very humbling experience. I know that homelessness is a pertinent issue— especially here in New York—but my eyes were opened to the hardships students have faced right here on — Hadisa Chowdhury ’21 campus.

Several are members of the Honors Program and scholastic honor societies.

They are truly remarkable individuals. To date, five Mott Street Scholars have graduated. One completed a post-graduate year serving in a Sisters of Charity sponsored mission, a few are preparing for law and graduate school, and the remaining graduates are working as they begin to launch their desired careers.

The Ad Lux campaign sought to raise $5,000,000 to help sustain and grow the Mott Street Scholarship Program. Maureen A. Henegan ’78, a trustee of the College, helped facilitate the Mount’s partnership with Covenant House and funded the first endowed Mott Street Scholarship as part of her generosity to the Ad Lux campaign. Hundreds of alums and donors have followed in her footsteps—donating anywhere from $5 to $50,000 to support both annual and endowed Mott Street scholarships.

Additionally, Mount Saint Vincent, in partnership with Covenant House New Jersey, hosted its first Annual Sleep Out in April 2019—which raised nearly $30,000 in support of Mott Street Scholars and their ambitions.

The Sleep Out is an act of solidarity. It draws attention to the limited educational resources available to those who persist through foster care and/or homelessness and supports the educational cost of every Mott Street Scholar.

“By sleeping out, we are committing ourselves to the College’s mission through our understanding of our common humanity, our commitment to human dignity, and our obligations to one another,” said Lynne Bongiovanni, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the College. “The College is eager to continue our relationship with Covenant House New Jersey and we are looking forward to rescheduling our next Sleep Out when it is safe to do so.”

Mott Street Scholars are Leaders in Service, often working alongside students in the Seton Service and Leadership Program.

These programs are just two examples of the College’s living mission— evident in the unwavering commitment to social justice of both current students and alumnae/i. The faithfulness and tenacity of the Sisters of Charity lives on through these programs, and funding raised through the Ad Lux campaign assures the principles established by our founders live on for years to come.

GRANTS AND CONTRACTS GOVERNMENT AWARDS In Spring 2020, the College received $2,781,586 in grant funds authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act and dispersed by the U.S. Department of Education.

More than half of the funds were allocated in emergency grants to students and the balance of funds are being utilized to address the operational challenges the College faces as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In October 2019, the College began the second of a five-year National Science Foundation Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Students.

The project, led by Pamela Kerrigan, Ph.D., Director of Natural Sciences and Associate Professor of Chemistry, will provide scholarships and enrichment activities for 22 students

pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry.

The grant will provide $959,955 over five years.

The Fall 2019 semester brought the fifth and final year of a U.S. Department of Education grant, totaling $1.2 million, to continue operating the SSS TRiO program at the College through 2020. The College received $320,000 in the year to provide counseling, academic support, career and financial guidance, and mentoring to 160 eligible students. The College received notification of a new fiveyear award for 2020-2025 in August, 2020.

The 2019-2020 academic year was the first year of a new five-year award to operate a New York State Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The program is designed for students who have the potential and drive

to further their education, but due to limited academic and financial resources, would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend college. The goal of HEOP is to retain and graduate promising students who will succeed at the college level and beyond. The grant provided $1,350,000 in 20192020, with cumulative funds awarded totaling $6,750,000 through 2024.

The College began work on its second grant project funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) in September 2019. The College has been awarded $299,950, cumulatively through 2022, to reduce sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking through awareness, education, and preventative strategies, including bystander training.

The Elizabeth Seton Library was awarded $5,991 from the New York State Department of Education’s Coordinated Collection Development Aid Program to support academic collection acquisition.

FOUNDATION AWARDS The Robert and Joan M. Dircks Foundation awarded the College $20,000 to support the Mott Street Scholarship Program.

The Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities made a new award of $16,000. The grant, made in memory of Yvonne Raskob, supported scholarships for nursing students.

The Arthur Williams Residuary Trust awarded the College $15,000 in scholarship funding for nursing students.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING Generations of donors contribute annually to keep the College of Mount Saint Vincent strong, and their dedicated support allows the Mount to continue its mission for future students as well. There are many opportunities for giving to the College and gifts can take several forms. Most contributions also provide the donor with an income tax deduction for the year of the gift.

ANNUAL FUND An Annual Fund gift is an opportunity to provide an unrestricted contribution to the Mount. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the College including financial aid, faculty development, buildings and grounds maintenance, student activities, and upgraded technology programs.

CAPITAL GIFTS Capital gifts are designated by the donor to fund the College’s capital needs, such as construction and renovation projects.

SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships give talented and deserving students the opportunity to afford a Mount education. Gifts can be made to a general scholarship fund or to the Scholarship Tribute Dinner to benefit all scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named and will support future generations of students.
