I

Dear Members of the Class of 1996 It was a short four years ago that you and I first came to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Those years have gone quickly; years in which we have all grown and gained from our experience here. Time and again you listened to my Native American stories with respect and appreciation as I celebrated your diversity and spirit.

Now you are beginning a new phase in your life; one which will place you beyond the gates of the Mount. You will carry the Mount spirit and experience with you. It will touch your family, your community, your Church, and your profession. Remember that you carry with you the “sacred space” that is the Mount along with the teachings of the buffalo.

We wish you success, health, happiness, and continued growth, and may God bless your journey.

Sincerely,

■

GETTING TO KNOW YOU Freshman Orientation ’95 Orientation is one of the most memorable experiences for students here at the Mount, as it is a time for most people to break out of their shells. The tempo for the next four years of a student’s life is set at Orientation: the first experience of school food at the luau, a chance to be silly with Dave Binder and at Playfair. Oh yeah, and there’s watching the wacky upperclassmen Orientation leaders acting like they’re in first grade again. Don’t forget — the initiation

course: CMSV 101, and everyone’s favorite beach-book: The Prince of Tides! When they first got here, fresh men were rather confused about what the next four years of their lives would hold in store for them, much less what the first weekend would do. CMSV’S BEST AND BRIGHTEST Honors Convocation 1995

In October, the College of Mount Saint Vincent held its annual Honors Convocation in Smith Hall. Mount stu dents were honored for their academic achievements of the previous year. Dr. Edward Meyer, Business Depart ment Chairperson and moderator of Delta Epsilon Sigma, inducted members into the National Honor Society. Those students in the Class of 1996, and the Class of 1997 who had been named to the academic honor roll were also rec ognized. The Covella Prize for Excellence in Research Writing was awarded to Denise Schnurr of the Class of 1998. The Enright Award for Teaching Ex cellence, better known as the Teacher of the Year Award, was awarded to Dr. Felix Bocchino of the Biology Depart ment. Many kudos to all honorees for a job well done!

Dr. Michael McGovern, Dr. Mary Stu art and the night’s guest speaker share a happy moment.

Senior Terri Valentino happily accepts her certificate from Dr. Stuart. r

JUNIOR RING NIGHT 1995 The Class of 1997 rang in the new year by celebrating their Ring Night in early November. The evening began with a mass in the Chapel. This portion of the evening began with opening remarks by Nacime Alfaras, the President of the Class of 1997. Many members of the class played an integral part of this celebration by planning the events of the Mass itself, and then by participating as readers, singers, and in the offertory procession. Nacime Alfaras assisted CMSV’s President, Dr. Mary Stuart in presenting each member of the Class of 1997 his or her college ring. Also represent at the ceremony was the Class Advisor, Sr. Patricia McGowan of the Communications Department. For many, the college ring symbolizes unity and belonging. For students par ticipating in this ceremony, with their friends, classmates and family surrounding, this ceremony marks a significant milestone in their college career. After the Mass, the College Dining Service catered a dinner in Spellman Cafeteria for the students, family, faculty, and administration. The Class of 1997 enjoyed the remainder of the evening by dancing the night away with ail of their guests, while admiring one another’s new rings.

APPALACHIAN WORKFEST ’96 Instead of enjoying warm and sunny climes for Spring Break ’96, six Mount students and three administrators and school employees embarked on a jour ney of the spiritual kind. These proud Dolphins went to Kentucky to take part in the Appalachian WorkFest with the Christian Appalachian Project. The trip was the brainchild of our beloved Sr. Magdalen, and those who participated took her spirit with them. It was a week spent with about 50 other students and advisors from 5 colleges from Illinois, Maine, and Michigan. What the group accomplished in that short time was short of miraculous, and the friendships made were everlasting. To have been enriched by such an ex perience shed a new light on life for the participants.

CMSV PLAYERS In the fall semester, CMSV’s theatre group, Players, put on a fantastic produc tion of NUNSENSE. After many grueling weeks of rehearsals in the middle of their academic workload, the stars of the show gave the CMSV community the perfor mances of their lifetimes. The cast, made up of senior Elizabeth Dollard, Juniors Lisa Leone and Kim Vil lanueva, and freshmen Julianne Contreras and Kristine Eaton, put a great deal of effort into getting NUNSENSE off of the ground, including tap lessons, which was new to everyone. With the rest of the Players behind the production, NUNSENSE was a terrific success. Good luck to all the Players seni ors: Chrissy Speroni, Theresa O’Hagan, Elizabeth Dollard, Theresa Valentino ) Mary Monahan, Harmin Sambajon, Oona Craig, Tara Feller, and Dot Seaborg.

A^IEC SOCIEr^^y © On Halloween night, Dr. Rob Jacklosky of the English Department, in conjunction with the Ariel Society, host ed the first ever Dead Poet’s Society Reading in the Fonthill Castle. The evening program was to com memorate the 200th birthday of the poet John Keats. It was a magnificent presentation. The castle, a mildmannered admissions office by day, was transformed into an ethereal, magical sphere; romantic in the candlelight, the mood set by period music. Members of Dr. Jacklosky’s Romantic Age class, as well as others, gave the audience moving reading of Keats’ and others’ period pieces. It truly was a night to remember for all who participated and attended.

p

! WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The College of Mount Saint Vincent’s Women’s Basketball team, under the direction of Head Coach Lorre Snyder and assistant Coach Heather Nicholson finished this season with a 17-9 record. Their 17 wins is the most wins they have posted since their 1979-1980 season. During their outstanding year, they won the CMSV Tournament, defeated area powers Hunter, Baruch, and the college of Staten Island, were runner-up in the I.A.C. Tourney, and received a bid to the New York State Women’s Tournament. It was the first time ever the Mount has received a bid to this prestigious event. This year’s team was led by senior Captains Justine Clifford and Kaity Pennell. Justine was once again one of the best guards in the Metropolitan area, and Kaity showed outstanding hustle and played very solid defense. Other top players included Ayanna Tucker, Danielle Cashen, Shakira James, Megan Menezes, Denea Jamison, Jackie Cullen, Erin-Kelly McKeever, Josie Doumampuom, and crowd favorite Gifty Akomea. With nine players returning next year. Coach Snyder and Coach Nicholson are very optimist about next season.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

This season, the men’s Volleyball Team finished their season with a win ning record of 15-8. They finished sec ond overall in the LA.C., and made it all the way to the championship game vs. NJ Tech, they also finished fourth in the Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Con ference, West Division. The players who helped lead the team to success were Eugene Zabolotsky, Yan Lager, and Dave Hylton. Hylton was ranked in the top 20 of the NCAA Di vision Division III in blocks. Lager was ranked in the top three nationally in digs, and in the top in service aces. Zabolotsky was also ranked in the top 20 in service aces and was also named the Player of the Week in the lAC. He was also ranked in the top 10 in assists in the Metro Conference and in the lAC. Also contributing greatly to the team’s success were starters Ian Winokur, Joe Feliciano, and Nikolai Iliev, as well as players Carlos Lozada, Wael Sayej, Ja son Torres, and Albert Fajardo. Under first-year coach Jeff Adams and assistant coach Matt Dowe, this year’s record indicates great promise for the future of CMSV Volleyball. With only one senior, Wally Sayej, graduat ing, the core of this winning team will be returning next season. The coaching staff is looking forward to honing the skills of these already talented players, as well as creating a more competitive schedule.
