We have come to find ourselves standing on the thresholds of our futures; those futures we will build on the experiences of our pasts. History is the essence of our lives. We take it up where another generation left off, and we become one with it. For the past four years, we have shared our lives with each other. In the process, we have created a class history uniquely our own. We have shared with each other both the good times and the bad. And we have become a part of the on-going history of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. We acknowledge the support of our teachers and of our families; for those who endorsed our goals, applaud ed our efforts, embraced our failures, boosted our spirits, and who, most importantly, believed in our success. But also, in this special 75th Birthday year of the Col lege, we acknowledge all those students who have gone before us blazing that trail that we follow. With them, we are united in an extra special spirit of enthusiasm and comradery. We became part of the Mount Saint Vincent tradition, and for the past four years, have heard all its stories of the past. We accepted that challenge of the past and changed and strengthened that tradition in a way only we could do. Now, we leave that tradition behind, challenging the next generation, and all those to come. Here, as we take a few moments to reflect on our history together, we can see so many of those moments that have been captured on film; but we remember too, all those times shared with just each other. . .

P 55c. ■■'s.

Searching ihe dark recesses of our memories, we look back to those first few days, when we packed up our belongings and headed “off to college.” Getting lost, standing on lines, walk ing into classrooms of strange faces, and being buried under by books — it was enough to overwhelm anybody. But soon enough the homesickness wore away, we survived the Freshman raid, elected ourselves some class of ficers, joined a club or two, learned our ways around, made plenty of friends, agonized over exams and papers, and just survived Freshman year. Our goal was just to get through the y ear. . .

And then came Sophomore year, when it was just great not to be a Freshman anymore! It was now that we started coming into our own, and promoting our own identities. We pul together a couple of successful informals, sold everything from unsalted pretzels to green carnations, changed our majors once or twice, and sent a class of seniors on their way into the r e a l w o r l d wi t h a b a n g at t h e Sophomore/Senior Dinner. We had problems to work out, and decisions to make, but we sur vived .. .

Next thing we knew, we were Juniors! We started hitting the books, working on some presentations, and actually made it through clinical. Yet, we always made time for a social life. We saw our class come together as we pulled off Ring Night and our Junior Formal, not to mention the many Cahill nights, and our Junior/Senior Cocktail Party. We saw ourselves being the leaders on campus — as Resident Assistants, as varsity sports players, as members of Student Government, as newspaper editors, and as leaders of so many other organizations on campus. We were really starting to believe in ourselves and in what we could become . . .

And look at us now ..

DEDICATION These past four years, we all became a part of the on-going history of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. This year, in marking the 75th year of that history, it is only fitting that we should give special recognition to all those students who were a part of its history; to those students that made Mount Saint Vincent what it is today. On this note, we, the Class of 1986, proudly dedicate this edition of Parapet to all the students and graduates of the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Whether here for a few days, or for four years, each played a special role in the Mount’s development during the past 75 years. Each encouraged a future generation to reach a little further, try a little harder, care a little more, strive a little further, speak a little louder, challenge a little stronger . . . all just to be that much greater. We see so many of the accomplishments of those students. They have passed the torch of hope and possibility on to us, and we walk the way they once walked. Thousands have received the education and preparation they needed to propel them into successful and rewarding futures. Then too, we see the number of students who have passed on before us, in whose wake we find the search and attainment of the ultimate eternal happiness. We can stand tall with our diplomas, knowing that we have what it takes to compete with the best of them; and then we can turn around and give a special wink to all those that came before us — thanks!

SR. MARGARET EGAN Please know that your many services and endless patience have not gone unnoticed. For all the times you encouraged us to reach a little farther, all the while there to catch us if we were to fall, we salute you and thank you. May God bless and reward you!

CAROL VICING How can one say in four lines all that you have meant to us during the past four years?! You supported the Class of 1986; but more than that, you believed in the Class of 1986. For the most super four years a class could ever have, a kiss, a hug, and a burst of symphonic energy!

Like all of history, at one point there was a beginning. To find the beginning Hof Mount Saint Vincent, we must go back many years beyond the seventyfive we celebrate this year .. . 1847 . . . McGowan’s Pass . . . New York City . . . the Sisters of Charity founded the Convent and Academy of Mount Saint Vincent. The institution was located on 105th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and was devoted to the instruction of young ladies. Plans for Central Park forced their relocation, and a new Convent and Academy was established below Yonkers, in Riverdale, along the banks of the Hudson River. Among the other buildings on the estate purchased by the Sisters from Mr. Edwin Forrest, an eminent Shakespearian tragedian, was the Fonthill Castle built in 1848. The Castle has since been named a New York State Landmark, as has the Administration building built in 1857. The Administration building was constructed with the convent on one end and five floors complete with classrooms, chapel, dining hall, and resident rooms. By 1910, the quality and level of the education offered at the Mount was substantially college level and, on April 19, 1911, a charter was granted by the New York State Board of Regents establishing the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Class of 1913 was the first graduating class. In 1911, Seton Hall was opened as a new residence for the sisters and students. Marillac Hall, part of the former Randolf estate, was renovated in 1921 and 1922 to allow additional housing. Through the course of the years, many other buildings have been added to handle the larger curriculum and enhance the beauty of the campus. Now, in 1986, we look back at those years of our history and wish the College of Mount Saint Vincent a Happy 75th Birthday. i

Dear Margo: There have been so many monents when we wanted to surrender. It was you with your inspiring words, guiding hand and patience that gave us the courage to try once more . . . As the dreams and chances for winning a trophy faded, it was you who said we had won something worth much more . . .

The support, understanding, love, and friendships which developed among us in such a short time, had more value and importance than any award. Our record may not reveal it, but we too feel that the seasons have been successful. . . Your ability to take nine individuals and have us play as one, has not gone unnoticed; nor has your devotion . . . To you . .. Many fond memories, good times; this dedication, along with my respect and a dozen roses . .. Marigrace Scaduto

Now, we take our time, so nonchalant. And spend our nights so bon vivant. We dress our days in silken robes. The money comes, the money goes.. . We know it’s all a passing phase. We light our lamps for atmosphere. And hang our hopes and chandeliers. We’re going wrong, we’re gaining weight. We’re sleeping long andfar too late. And so it’s time to change our ways But I ’ve loved these days. So, before we end and then begin. We’ll drink a toast to how it’s been A few more hours to be complete, A few more nights on satin sheets, A few more times that I can say.. I ’ve loved these days. Billy Joel
