Class Poem C/iM7ifcs of jagged colored crystals 9 Sun-drenched^ rest upon a sill; Gleam in ruby red and topaz; Shine ivith green and sapphire hue.
Days of raindrops melt each crystal; Months of sunbeams fade and gel; Molten colors merge and mellow Clearest yellow, purest blue,
^Til each color swirls in changing; Swells with strains of different shades; Garnets pale and greens grow turquoise; Grays and golds alone are true, Not one crystal is unaltered; Sister crystals, mingled, fade. Muted tints are far more lustrous 9 When each other^s cast imbue, Virginia Lambert

Class History High atop the hills of Riverdale, overlooking the Hudson, a group of bewitched, bothered, and bewildered girls descended, locust-fashion, upon the campus of Mount Saint Vincent, to pose that musical question, “Where DO all the hippies meet?” and to venture forth into “the best years of their lives.” While parents were proudly standing by, and housemothers, advisors, and junior sisters were exuding smiles of welcome, we were memorizing name tags, tripping over trunks and suitcases, and frantically trying to act as calm as everyone else. Trusting that the surest way to get adjusted is to plunge right in, plunge we did, into the first round of college courses the next day. While the registrar, dean of studies, and no doubt most of the fac ulty were wondering why they had not chosen some other profession, we were busily being aesthetic in fine arts classes, articulate in speech therapy sessions, and physically fit in tank suits, as well as scientific, literary, or theological, depending upon the period we were in at the time. Lest we get bored, there were assemblies and orientation pro grams to attend and clubs to join. By the end of that week we were still wondering who was who, what South Hall was south of, and what a blue book was, other than bluish. On October Sth, with the official introduction of our chaplain and fellow newcomer, Father Mulcahy, we felt much less alone in our confusing new surroundings. A week later our junior sisters, Maverick, Chester, Tonto and all, welcomed us to the “land of the Golden West” and, once again, to the land of the “Happy East-on-the-Hudson”. With the Mass of the Holy Ghost came the much needed spiritual help for our first academic year, as well as a feeling of awe and pride to be a part of the college. Next year, we thought, should we live so long, we would be in caps and gowns and really belong. The first month ended happily with the Halloween party. After the cider, jelly apples, costumes, and skits in the gym, we returned to haunt the smoker, equipped with a pump kin, some frightful mu sic, and some equally ghastly dances, serving to re-enforce our title of “teen queens and “aborigines”. We would have to wait until sopho more year for our musi cal taste to be elevated by Mr. Mack. Somewhere in the midst of storming mail rooms, mixers, dining halls, father-daughter square dances, and the world of academia in general, there developed ?>

a sense of becoming and a sense of involvement. We were growing within ourselves as we grew closer together, and we were becoming more entrenched in the traditions, innovations, and lives of all the members of the college. When the night of Investiture came, we had reached our first milestone in becoming an integral part of the past, present, and future of Mount Saint Vincent. Thanksgiving came and went. Our “Little Women” competed with their big sisters in the dramatic tournament, and bowed to their victory. And then all at once Christmas fever was in the air. Our trees in Crossroads and Seton stood proud and tall; our Santa, round and jolly; our angels crept through the dorm, leaving surprises of candy and freshly made beds, while our jingles merrily proclaimed to the senior carolers that the freshmen were “glad they are here”. The Christmas dinner was as festive as it was impressive, with Sister Mary David lighting the candles on our ice cream snowballs, bright ening the holiday with her own way of saying, “Merry Christmas”. An epidemic of finals and of the flu somewhat weakened our spirit, but not enough to prevent us from winning the basketball com petition. Before emersing ourselves into the second semester’s chal lenges, we paused for the college retreat. March found us strutting down Fifth Avenue to honor St. Patrick, and flying off to Rome for the beatification ceremonies of Mother Seton. April was sparked by the Freshman-Junior party with our own version of Drs. Casey and Kildare, and a rousing medley of songs taking us “from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters”. It is not easy to study for finals when May is rearing her lovely head. A little serious sunbathing on the roof proved to be quite a temptation, and it was a wonder that we ever did propel ourselves into some hysterical outbursts of studying. When exams were over, Daisy Chain climaxed the year with dignity, solemnity, and a fair sprinkling of gaiety. We looked back onto a full year. The Pontifical Mass for the Ecumenical Council, an inter-collegiate Spring Spectacular in West chester, career day, “one sad daisy that met with defeat” in song contest, eternal bridge games, bass weejuns and brown and whites, all went into the making of a memorable year, Make up a list of unrelated things like the excitement in the parlor I over the NIT games, the excitement in the cafe teria over a multi legged creature in a sal ad, and the excitement I in the smokers when • 1 non-biology students en countered pigs a la for maldehyde; add the mu sic of the Limeliters drifting from the smok er, the chords of “March I

Militaire*’ emanating from the nearest piano, and the hearty version of “Shanty Town” rendered from atop another; then some cupless coke machines, waterless faucets, and heatless radiators; stir in a penny drive, an *‘ugly day”, the “Jabberwocky”, a button collection of one scissor-happy cohort, an occasional water fight, one bat, one mouse, and one winged visitor to the smoker, and you have the sometimes frivolous, sometimes serious, most often bewildering class of 1966. As our song said, “freshman year was very gay; helping hands led the way; we felt wanted.” It was a very good year. September rolled around again, bringing the “teen queens back to the Mount, this time finding us more at home. We were equipped with a new president, a new dean, a new dormitory, and a gallery of new milestones to encounter. Our first big project was to be the Sophomore Informal. The gym was to sparkle like Central Park with music and magic reigning freely. But when the scheduled night of November 23rd came, Central Park, our campus, indeed the whole world was filled with sorrow over the tragedy of our President’s death. Out of the grief and horror of that weekend came a silent pledge within us to prevent John Kennedy’s goals from dying. The motto of “doism” took on an added meaning. We would try harder than ever to become purposefully in volved and to erase any evidence of a sophomore slump. Our work continued at the Hel^rew Home for the Aged, Leake and Watts, and other local organizations. We strengthened our ties with Manhattan College through joint courses and dramatic produc tions, while our cheerleaders rallied to support their teams. Mean while, the coffee hours came into being, increasing our interest and understanding in fields ranging from civil rights to the ecumenical movement. Time passed quickly, although it did seem to drag through mid terms and finals. Holidays came and fled by. We cried’“" apathy „ ■ /”’yet _ ■ all’1 the while things were happening, and we found ourselves very much involved. Our “Mid-Summer Night's Dream” competed in the play contest, and with balloons bouncing high above our bobbing heads, a graph tried to spell out success in the song contest, but in both cases, “hard ’though we tried, we just missed the mark”. Undaunted, we t participated in the mock senate in Albany, the Latin American Confer .. t ence at Immaculata, de bates and NFCCS meet ings all over, and art contests right in our homefront. If vollevball and swimming meets proved to be disasters, badminton gave us a Ir .Jf \ taste of victory. k I j The Spring saw the beginning of a new traV

dition, the Sophomore-Senior dinner, and suddenly it was time for exams and Daisy Chain again. In the memory department, we had a full store. Publicity-wise, we had done well. Glamour magazine sur veyed our best dressed, McCalls took advantage of our scenic campus, and Life attested to the enthusiastic welcome we gave to a certain visiting foursome from Liverpool. It had been a year filled with trips to Bermuda, proving how interesting motor bikes can be; dotted with fads from tiddly winks and tennis racket combats up to and includ ing bo-lo and bubble blowing. We slammed a fair share of doors, donned our London Fogs, attended open student council meetings, cleaned up after Halloween parties as usual, sent a goodly number of telegrams, singing or otherwise, when the Glee Club or our Sopho more Quartet was not singing elsewhere, and, at times, managed to put the cart decidedly before the horse. In June when we were singing “So long for a while”, we had reached the half-way mark. “Fergit it?” How could we. it too had been a very good year. And so we evolved from the little sisters to the big sisters on the campus. We tried to make the freshman class of 1968 feel as wel come as we had been made to feel, and so we launched our orien tation program with parties and hootenannies. Partly because we did not want to lose our good standing with the jet set, and partly because we will do anything to see mail in those perpetually empty boxes, a group of us took off for a year abroad. Although letters enabled us to share experiences on both sides of the Atlantic, the fact that our continental cohorts were missed remained unaltered. Keeping active was settled upon as being the best therapy for the problem. The administration seemed to be plot ting against that plan by bestowing unlimited cuts upon us, but some how we managed to keep from complaining. We also managed to keep busy. Little things like reading lists always seemed to fill any possible empty hour. If school work failed to keep us occupied, there was certainly no lack of extracurricular activities. October brought much excitement with the arrival of the sena torial candidates of New York to the campus. The Mount was covered with banners, buttons, debates, and rallies. Meanwhile, the junior class was cam paigning to make the Mother-daughter Bridge the greatest success ever. The Autumn also brought another oppor tunity to welcome our little sisters with the Junior-Freshman party, as Cinda Frump and the other campus cuties dis played the joys of being a college student. Christmas was as merry as ever, and we outdid ourselves with la vish trimmings in the -

smoker. We got rather violent if anyone suggested that the total ef fect was a bit gaudy. The Junior-Senior party rounded out the sea son with some “chocolate brew” and “Jingle Bell Rock . Totally ignoring our perfect record of failures, we tried once again in the song and play contests. We were the only ones who thought our sensitive princess was worthy of a drama critics award, although our never-prone-to-overacting stars were finally rewarded witli some recognition. As for our elevator, it never got off the ground. The spirit of the Easter season could not have been carried out more fittingly than it was with the Appalachia project developed by our own NFCCS delegate, and put into practice by all who participated. The hard work of two and a half years was rewarded in the Spring of 1965. It found us racing up the hill to the administration building for the long-awaited college ring, and celebrating with the Junior Promenade in April. The weekend was filled to the brim with the prom, a theatre party, the Communion breakfast, and a picnic. At the Freshman-Junior picnic, we were entertained by our little sister “Mounties at the Fair”. May rounded out the party-going sea son with the Junior-Senior luncheon. And so we had made it through another year, spiced with pas times such as skate boards; culture day; the library drive; hours with Soupy, Allison, or the Shindogs; lectures on the Peace Corps and interracial forums; winning the coveted A.A. Cup; the pierced ears craze, not to be equally by name games, or the hysteria over theology notes. As we said good-bye to the class of 1965 and to Msgr. Fitzgerald, we realized that we too would be leaving soon. and hoped that we would be as much remembered as they. They said it couldn’t be done, and at times we had some serious doubts too, but by some stroke of fate, misguided or otherwise, we reached the fourth plateau. The day hops who had J)raved the climb to the gate for three years were joined in their daily exercise by the student teacher brigade, while the rest of us sadistically delighted in the joy of no morning classes. From the beginning of the year, however, it was evident that any loafing or laurel-resting was out of the question. It was our turn to worry about the Campus Record and Fonthill Dial deadlines, to work on the yearbook, to organize club activities, and to see that everything from student service and boarder council to the student council ran smoothly. We were getting a taste of what it is like to be on the other side of the fence, or blackboard, as the case mav be. Senior year was a time for things to happen and to stop happen ing. New York was either busy with the mayor race or the papal visit to the U.N., or it was stopping dead in its tracks with the black out or the subway strike. We were either caught up in a flurry of interviews and graduate record exams or wallowing in unexpected respites from classes graciously provided by snow storms. Marks were often in an equally unnerving state of flux, but a good number of us proved ourselves with fellowships, job offerings, or the honor of >> being listed in ''Who who’s Who* Who ’. All of ot us in the “"Who's Who’s Not Not' cate gory shared their well-deserved happiness. Speaking of happiness, a

glance around the class caught the gleam in the eyes and the sparkle on the fingers of the ''discovered treasures” of the group. The rest of us were busily filling out Operation Match forms. Christmas was colored by our red bows and bright caps and the carols sung with our priests, sisters, and sister classes, the most melodic rendition being attributed to Father Mulcahy’s vocal group. The Christmas formal, as always, was the perfect holiday occasion. Another round of finals, an almost indecently long vacation, and we entered round eight. Our last semester brought many visitors to our hallowed halls, the least of which was not Middle States, for whom we wore our brightest smiles and our most intellectual expres sions. We did not want to be prejudiced or sentimental about the whole thing, but we were ready to explain to them that Mount Saint Vincent’s daughters had a perfect right to sing her praises. The frenzy over one set of visitors had hardly died when the Duke El lington Orchestra arrived. In our four years we had enjoyed so many excellent lectures, programs, and concerts, such as the Barbara Ward lecture and John Howard Griffin’s talk, and the Ellington concert climaxed them all with justifiable excitement. It was worthwhile just to see the face of our sophomore advisor and faithful supporter, Sister Mary Alethea, radiate as it did. The hundred nights dinner and the celebration which ensued, was past, and the fashion show and alumnae tea were quickly ap proaching. Then it was time for comprehensives for some; finals for all. Thus the cycle draws to completion with the garland ceremony, the Baccalaureate Mass, degrees, hoods, tassels. The failures, dis appointments, and complaints all fade, but the happinesses and successes are not diminished by farewells. We are still a part of our college, and join with it, as always, in looking back upon its long and happy history, and ahead to the promise of its future. . 1
