The design of academic gowns and hoods in the United States was inherited from British universities. The gown is medieval in concept and originated in European universities. The cap or mortarboard is from Italy, but the hood as an academic vestment is distinctly British.
In the early years, teachers wore academic gowns with appropriate hoods in the classroom, a practice still followed in England. In the United States, gowns and hoods are worn only on ceremonial occasions.
In 1894, a recent graduate of Williams College, Garner Cottrell Leonard, prepared a code of academic gowns and hoods, which was adopted by leading U.S. universities. That code is still observed today.
In 1895, President Low of Columbia University said in his annual report, “The movement towards the adoption . . . of a distinctive academic costume for professors and graduates has received a new impetus this year.” The goal was a uniform practice among American colleges and universities whereby the cap, gown and hood would indicate the degree of the wearer, the faculty under which it was obtained, and the institution which conferred the degree.
The general wearing of gowns for commencement in the United States started in the 1880s. By 1897, nearly 50 American universities had registered the color of their hoods and hood lining. Although gowns originally were designed to be worn open or closed, closed gowns have become the tradition in the United States.
Because the clergy were the teachers of the Middle Ages, it is natural that their attire became symbolic of the teaching profession as it moved out of the cloister. Currently, there are three distinct types of gowns: the undergraduate gown with a long, pointed sleeve; the master’s gown with a long, closed sleeve; and the doctor’s gown with full, balloon sleeve and chevrons.
Medieval gowns were woolen. Some were decorated and some lined with fur for warmth. In later eras velvet came into use, primarily for decoration. In the 19th century, bachelor’s gowns were of worsted material; master’s and doctor’s were silk. Trim was used only on doctoral gowns; the velvet trim on the facing, and the bars and chevrons on the sleeves were either black or the color of the trimming on the hood. Today, rayon, nylon and polyester have replaced the lightweight wool.
At one time the gown color denoted the wearer’s educational specialty, but in the United States the majority of gowns are black. Some universities have designated a particular color for their gown, such as the Yale blue, the Cornell red, and the Northwestern purple. These are symbolic of the school’s color rather than the area of educational specialty. The University of Oklahoma adopted gowns specific to our institution in January of 2006. All graduation candidates wear a crimson stole with the university seal embroidered in cream on one side and the words, “Live on, University” on the other and doctor’s gowns are trimmed in crimson velvet.
Originally, the hood was the upper part of the cowl worn by monks and friars in the Middle Ages, designed to keep rain and drafts off the wearer. When not needed, it was pulled down and hung over the tippet, or short cape, which was layered over the gown for additional warmth. Later the hood and tippet were joined in one piece to become the “full-shaped” American-style hood.
According to the Leonard code, all hoods are black. Bachelor’s and master’s hoods have a “simple” shape, or stylized hood, while the doctor’s hood is 6 inches longer and utilizes the “simple” shape attached to a tippet. Hoods usually are the same material as the gown.
In medieval times the hood lining was often fur, but in 1426 an order issued at Oxford allowed hoods lined with silk for the summer months. Currently, most hoods are lined with rayon, nylon or cotton satin instead of expensive silk or fur. The trim around the edge of the hood, 2 to 5 inches in width, represents the department of faculty or learning. The lining of the hood is the colors of the college or university conferring the degree. In 1895, the University of Oklahoma chose colors of crimson and cream. An individual wears the lining colors of the institution granting the degree, or the colors of the institution to which the wearer is officially connected.
The velvet panel on the top of the master’s and doctoral hoods represent the discipline or area of study.
The Oxford cap or mortarboard, worn by all graduates from a degree-granting institution, comes from the biretta, a cap worn by the Venetian Doges during the Italian Renaissance. This cap, originally fitted over the ears, had a square top with no tassel.
Current usage has modified it to a black square on a skull cap pointed front to back. The attached tassel designates the area of educational specialty of the undergraduate degree.
Some universities, particularly in Europe, have a specially designed hat, such as the Sorbonne’s medieval beret or the University of London’s flat, beefeater tam. Doctoral degrees at OU wear an eight-sided velvet tam.
The mace and collar used in today’s ceremonies were commissioned by the Alumni Development Fund on the occasion of the retirement of George Lynn Cross as seventh president of the university. Both pieces were created by Joe Atteberry, formerly with the School of Art.
Worn by the president of the university as a symbol of his authority, the sterling silver collar and medallion is composed of the University Seal in the center surrounded by links containing symbols of the university.
The mace, carried by the chairpersons of the Faculty Senate as a symbol of the faculty authority, is made of sterling silver, ebony and ivory. The native semiprecious stones clustered above the seal represent the variety of the disciplines of the academic community.
These items are more than just symbols to represent the authority of the presidency and the faculty. They are a reminder of the people’s faith in education, in responsibility of the presidential office and in the guardianship of the university by the State of Oklahoma.
The colors of the tassel worn by candidates for all degrees have a significance which is rooted historically in the traditions of academic life.
The colors of the tassels worn by candidates for the baccalaureate degrees represent the field of knowledge in which the degree is conferred. All master’s candidates wear black tassels. Doctoral candidates wear a “gold bullion” tassel representing their area of study or discipline.
At the University of Oklahoma, the following colors are used to designate the various fields of study and their supporting colleges.

The University of Oklahoma Class of 2025 will celebrate their time at OU by directly impacting three campus projects: the OU Counseling Center, the OU Food Pantry, and the OU Student Relief Fund. The impact of private support touches people in every area of OU. Giving back is part of the Sooner way. Seniors who have not yet given are still encouraged to do so with a contribution of $20.25 to the project(s) of their choice.
Since 1906, OU students have left behind a special gift to campus and all the students who follow in their footsteps. Over the years, class gifts have created the Cherokee Gothic arches that welcome visitors to Parrington Oval, Asp Avenue, Elm Avenue and Brooks Street entrances and the Centennial Arches on Van Vleet Oval; the Reflecting Pool at The Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, originally a gift of the Class of 1934 and revived by the classes of 1960 and 2000; and the fountain and pool between Oklahoma Memorial Union and Monnet Hall, a gift of the Class of 1935.

A curriculum in business was first offered at the University of Oklahoma in 1913 through a subordinate school in the College of Arts and Sciences. Then, in 1917, the School of Public and Private Business became one of the first schools west of the Mississippi to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business—the international accrediting agency for business schools—a distinction it has maintained continuously till now. In 1923, the Board of Regents established a separate School of Business and authorized the Bachelor of Science degree in Business. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree was authorized five years later. In 1929, the school became the College of Business Administration and the degree awarded was changed to the Bachelor of Business Administration. In 1997, the college was named the Michael F. Price College of Business in honor of its benefactor and alumnus, Michael F. Price.
Today, the Michael F. Price College of Business has over 7,025 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students pursuing degrees and certificates with over 80 different options. At the undergraduate level, Price College offers 12 majors, 11 minors and eight certificates in areas including accounting, economics, energy management, entrepreneurship, finance, health care business, international business, management, management information systems, marketing, sports business and supply chain management. At the graduate level, Price College offers numerous in-person and online programs, including a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Accountancy, Master of Science in Finance, Master of Science in Management Information Technology, Master of Science in Supply Chain Management, Master of Science in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Executive MBA in Energy, Executive MBA in Aerospace and Defense and the Doctor of Philosophy in Business with emphases in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, management, management information systems, marketing and supply chain management.
Graduates of the Michael F. Price College of Business wear drab-colored tassels with special regalia designating different academic programs.

In the act establishing the University of Oklahoma, approved by the first legislature of the Territory of Oklahoma, Dec. 19, 1890, one of the purposes stated was for the university to provide the means of acquiring a thorough knowledge of the theory and art of teaching. This mandate led to the establishment of the School of Teaching, which by 1929 had evolved into the College of Education. The college is a professional school whose mission includes the preparation of qualified personnel for the public schools, research to improve education, and the provision of educational services to the public.

The College of Engineering was established as a degree-recommending college in 1909, and the first professional engineering degrees were conferred in 1910. The college’s purview of teaching, research, professional service and technology transfer has grown substantially since then, so that today it offers degrees from seven schools and three academic programs on the Norman and Tulsa campuses leading to undergraduate and graduate degrees across numerous disciplines of engineering, applied sciences, and technology. In appreciation of their gifts, the College of Engineering was officially named after Janet and Jim Gallogly in the fall of 2015.
The goals and aspirations of the Gallogly College of Engineering are most clearly represented in the accomplishments of alumni who are defining the future of technology, medicine, business and the environment in public and private enterprises throughout Oklahoma and the world. Engineering graduates are identified by their orange tassel.

A School of Journalism was first established at the University of Oklahoma in 1913. During the early years, the thrust of the program was to prepare young people for reporting and editing careers in newspapers and magazines. By 1921 the curriculum had expanded to include courses in advertising and newspaper management that were at the forefront of journalism education in the country. The course offerings of the school continued to grow to include radio news in the 1930s. By the late 1950s, courses in professional writing, public relations and television news had been added.
The School of Journalism was renamed the H.H. Herbert School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1961. Herbert, the school’s second director, led the school from 1917 to 1945. Under his leadership, the standards of the school were raised, and by 1921 the school became one of only 11 institutions in the United States to meet the requirements for admission to the Association of American Schools and Departments of Journalism. High standards continue with the college’s accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Only about 115 programs nationwide meet the ACEJMC’s accreditation standards.
The school carries its standards into the new century as the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The college offers undergraduate degrees in advertising, creative media production, journalism, professional writing, and public relations. Programs of graduate study are also offered, leading to a Master of Arts with emphases in mass communication management, advertising and public relations, journalism, and creative media production; Master of Professional Writing; Master’s in Strategic Communication and Digital Strategy; and Ph.D. with emphases in journalism, strategic communication, and media arts. The college
added an online master's degree in strategic communication and digital strategy in 2021.
Graduates of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication wear crimson tassels.

The College of Professional and Continuing Studies (PACS), formerly known as the College of Liberal Studies, was established in 1960. The college is best characterized by the broad student populations it serves, as well as the specialized programming it offers. Primarily focusing on the higher education needs of place-bound working adults, military-connected personnel, and those seeking specialized study in selected professional areas, PACS offers a variety of degree programs, including several programs offered collaboratively with other OU colleges. In all its programming, the college emphasizes a holistic approach to learning, focuses on the
immediate application of learning to one’s life and workforce preparation, promotes lifelong learning opportunities, and encourages the work of active citizenship. In 1899, graduate studies commenced at the University of Oklahoma, and the first master’s degree was awarded in 1900. The Graduate School was formally organized in 1909, and 20 years later, the first doctoral degree was conferred. The name Graduate School was officially changed to Graduate College in 1942. Today, the OU Graduate College offers 170 master’s and 76 doctoral degree programs and enrolls about 6,720 students. During the 2024-2025 academic year, the Norman campus awarded 2,239 master’s and 205 doctoral degrees.
Graduate degrees represent the acquisition of the highest levels of knowledge. The master’s degree student completes an advanced examination, creative activity, or thesis; the doctoral degree student makes an original contribution to the scholarship of the field.
The doctoral hooding represents the entry of a new member into the scholarly community. The hood for advanced degrees combines the university’s cream and crimson with the color designated for the degree. Master’s degree candidates wear black tassels; doctoral candidates wear gold.

The University of Oklahoma Health Campus is one of the most comprehensive academic health centers in the nation, with seven health professions and research colleges; clinical and research centers of excellence such as the OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center, OU Health Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, and Dean McGee Eye Institute; and multiple clinical programs through partnership with the OU Health system.
The University of Oklahoma Health Campus academic programs prepare health care professionals and scientists to meet tomorrow’s most complex health care needs through research, discovery, and interdisciplinary education experiences. The Health Campus is a premier health care training institution for nearly 3,900 students; 100 post-doctoral researchers; and 874 residents and fellows, graduating physicians, biomedical and clinician scientists, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and public health leaders in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and several additional sites. Researchers at the OU Health Campus and sites across the state have the largest portfolio of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the state and commercializes new treatments and diagnostic tests utilizing state-of-the art research facilities such as the University Research Park and Stanton L. Young Biomedical Research Center. The Stephenson Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in Oklahoma and provides care for 1 in 5 of all Oklahomans diagnosed with cancer. It has ranked in the top 10 nationally for patient enrollment in NCI National Clinical Trial Network treatment trials since 2014.
OU Health Campus in Oklahoma City is located one mile south of the state capitol building and is a founding partner with the University Hospitals Authority and Trust of the academic health system, OU Health. The latter includes OU Health Partners, OU Health-Oklahoma Medical Center, Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health Campus, and OU Health Edmond Medical Center, as well as numerous clinics located in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and other sites across Oklahoma. The University combines efforts with OU Health as the only research-driven health care system in Oklahoma, with treatment options and expertise found nowhere else.
The OU Health partnership is active in Tulsa, with OU’s School of Community Medicine, which has academic and clinical affiliations with the Hillcrest, St. Francis, and St. John health systems. Ground-breaking for the Stephenson Cancer Center in Tulsa occurred in Fall 2025. The University has additional affiliations with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oklahoma City and other hospitals, clinics, health departments, tribal partners, and health care facilities across the state, including in Ardmore, Norman, Bartlesville, Weatherford, Duncan, and Lawton.
OU Health Campus has contributed to Oklahoma’s history and growth for the past 132 years. The College of Pharmacy dates to 1893, before statehood, and awarded degrees to OU’s first two graduates; the College of Medicine began training in 1900 as a two-year pre-clinical school and in 1910, merged
with the Epworth Medical College in Oklahoma City to become a four-year school. The Graduate College, originally a shared college with the Norman Campus, was established at the OU Health Campus in 1990. The Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing began classes in 1911; and the College of Allied Health and Hudson College of Public Health opened to their first students in 1967. The College of Dentistry was founded in 1971, with an added location on the OU-Tulsa campus in 2022.
Scientists, scholars, and clinicians at OU Health Campus deliver health care solutions through bench-to-bedside-to-community research and through training the state’s most comprehensive and skilled health workforce. OU Health is an essential partner for the State of Oklahoma to improve health outcomes and drive economic growth.
Jane E. Wilson, Ph.D., Dean
The College of Allied Health’s vision is to be a leader in improving quality of life, so people and communities thrive. The college serves as the academic unit for undergraduate programs in communication sciences and disorders, nuclear medicine, radiation sciences, radiation therapy, sonography, and radiography, as well as for professional programs in audiology, dietetics, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology. The college also offers graduate programs in communication sciences and disorders, nutritional sciences, and rehabilitation sciences.
The college was authorized by the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education in 1967 and activated in February 1970 to consolidate and coordinate existing programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Campus and to further develop programs to meet allied health resource needs in Oklahoma.
The professional-entry educational programs are diagnostic, therapeutic, or rehabilitative in focus and prepare students to join an interprofessional health care delivery system focused on the well-being of the citizens
of Oklahoma. Through its graduate programs, the college prepares future leaders, faculty, advanced practice clinicians, and researchers for the professions and for advancing the health care system in Oklahoma. The college is authorized to offer 21 programs, which consist of seven baccalaureate, three master’s level, seven doctoral level, and four certificate programs. Nine of these programs award professional entry degrees.
Undergraduate and graduate professional students of the College of Allied Health may be identified by their Nile green tassels.

The College of Medicine is the largest academic unit located within OU Health Campus in Oklahoma City. Founded in 1900, the initial two-year School of Medicine was expanded to four years when it merged with the Epworth College of Medicine in Oklahoma City in 1911. The college’s branch campus in Tulsa – the School of Community Medicinewas established in 1974, originally for third- and fourth-year students who elected to complete their clinical education in Tulsa. In 2015, the Tulsa program expanded to four years and applicants could apply to take their entire four years in the Tulsa community-based educational track of the College of Medicine. The School of Community Medicine offers a Master of Health Sciences degree for physician assistant students.
The College of Medicine offers the Doctor of Medicine degree and also offers the Master of Health Sciences degree for physician associate students in Oklahoma City. The college conducts graduate medical education through residency and fellowship programs in over 60 specialties and subspecialties of medicine and provides continuing medical education and professional development programs for thousands of physicians and health professionals annually through a wide variety of programs. In conjunction with the Graduate College, faculty in the College of Medicine provide education leading to master’s and doctoral degrees in the biomedical sciences.
The college has a robust biomedical research enterprise, ranging from basic science to translational and clinical research that has led to numerous discoveries, technology transfer, and improvements in health care. OU Health Physicians, the faculty clinical practice group in Oklahoma City, is now an integral part of OU Health, the University’s academic health system partner, which remains the largest medical group in the state and provides health care for hundreds of thousands of individuals each year.
The Doctor of Medicine was first conferred by the University in 1911. The total enrollment of students pursuing the Doctor of Medicine degree is approximately 675, with more than 700 graduate physicians in residency and fellowship training.
The first PA students graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree. The program evolved to a Master of Health Sciences degree, which is awarded to approximately 75 students annually. The program varies in length by campus but is completed in 27-30 months.
Graduates of the College of Medicine can be identified by their green hoods. Candidates for the Doctor of Medicine degree will receive their degrees at the end of May and candidates for the MHS receive their degrees in October (OKC) or November (Tulsa), subject to faculty approval.

The University of Oklahoma Health Graduate College advances research to solve major unmet needs in medicine, health care, and public health. Graduates are world-class researchers, educators, and health care professionals. These future leaders will uncover the basis of human diseases, translate research findings into solutions for better health, and train the next generation of health care providers and researchers.
The OU Health Campus Graduate College offers 30 research-based graduate programs leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. M.S. graduates demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills through substantial post- baccalaureate study and the completion of a thesis research project. Ph.D. graduates develop
independent expertise in their discipline. As the cornerstone of their training, each Ph.D. candidate produces a body of significant, original research for the doctoral dissertation, under the training and mentorship of a faculty advisor.
Nearly 400 Graduate College faculty provide mentorship and training for students in the OU Health Campus Graduate College, in collaboration with the other six OU Health Campus colleges. The Graduate College is home to 220 doctoral students and 70 master’s students who generate data and publications that drive discovery, innovation, and grant funding. Approximately 80% of NIH grants to the OU Health Campus are led by Graduate College Faculty.
Candidates for the M.S. and Ph.D. wear a hood lined with the University colors of crimson and cream, signifying the intense dedication and study required for these advanced degrees. M.S. candidates are distinguished by gold velvet on the hood. Ph.D. candidates are distinguished by a longer hood faced with blue velvet, and crimson stripes of velvet on the arms of the graduation gown.
