xploring Riverside’s heritage offers more than a glimpse into the past. It reveals the story of how this vibrant community grew from fertile groves to a thriving city, shaped by ambition, innovation, and cultural pride. As you stroll past historic buildings and uncover the story behind Riverside’s most iconic symbol, the Raincross, you begin to see why this city has become such a powerhouse in the region.

EARLY RIVERSIDE

Long before Riverside was founded, this region was home to the Cahuilla, Serrano, and other Native peoples who cared for the land and established deep cultural roots. Their traditions and stewardship shaped the valley’s resources and pathways that later settlers would follow. Spanish explorers arrived in the 18th century, introducing missions and ranching practices that transformed the landscape. During the Mexican era, large land grants further defined the region’s agricultural potential. @rivchamber

F @RiversideChamber

In 1870, a group of pioneers envisioned a planned colony along the Santa Ana River. Drawn by fertile soil and the promise of irrigation, they laid out streets, cultivated citrus groves, and built the foundations of what would become Riverside.

A CITRUS EMPIRE THAT BUILT A CITY

Riverside’s destiny changed forever in 1873, when Eliza Tibbets planted two small Washington Navel orange trees sent from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The trees flourished in the local climate, sparking an agricultural revolution that would put Riverside on the map as the birthplace of California’s citrus industry. Within decades, the city became the wealthiest per capita community in the nation. Citrus magnates funded impressive civic projects, from schools and libraries to hospitals and cultural institutions. The prosperity of the orange groves shaped not only the economy but also the identity of Riverside itself.

Remnants of this golden era are still visible today. Historic packing houses, preserved groves, and neighborhood names reflect the legacy of the citrus boom. Even now, the story of the Washington Navel continues to inspire local pride and a sense of connection to a time when a simple fruit transformed an entire community.

reminder of where we come from.” First introduced in 1908, the Raincross has appeared on everything from light poles and trashcans to jewelry and tattoos. For many, the Raincross stands for heritage, continuity, and a shared sense of purpose. It honors the city’s agricultural origins, acknowledges its cultural diversity, and celebrates the resilience of generations who built Riverside into a thriving community. Today, the Raincross is everywhere. You will spot it on lampposts and bridges, incorporated into the architecture of the Mission Inn, and featured in logos and civic seals. It graces street signs, public art, and even local businesses that proudly display the mark as a sign of authenticity. More than a brand, the Raincross is a touchstone that connects past and present. It reminds residents and visitors alike that Riverside is a place where history and progress move forward together.

LANDMARK ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORIC SITES

Riverside’s heritage is perhaps most visible in its remarkable collection of historic buildings. The Historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa is the city’s crown jewel. What began as a modest adobe boarding house

grew into a sprawling architectural masterpiece blending Mission Revival, Moorish, and Mediterranean styles. Over the years, it has welcomed presidents, celebrities, and travelers from around the world. Its ornate details and hidden courtyards reward anyone who takes time to explore. Nearby, the Riverside County Historic Courthouse stands as a testament to civic ambition. Modeled after the Petit Palais

THE RAINCROSS – RIVERSIDE’S ENDURING EMBLEM Few symbols are as closely tied to a city’s identity as Riverside’s Raincross. This distinctive design blends the image of a mission bell with a double-cross, inspired by the Franciscan cross associated with Father Junípero Serra. The result is a motif that feels both spiritual and uniquely Californian, reflecting Riverside’s early mission influences and agricultural prosperity. Councilmember Philip Falcone describes the emblem as “Riverside’s version of New Orleans’ fleur-delis, a symbol of pride and heritage, a

Heritage that Lives On in Paris, this grand structure showcases classical columns, intricate sculptures, and an unmistakable sense of grandeur. The Fox Performing Arts Center also carries its own legacy. Once a golden-age movie palace, it has been carefully restored into a venue that hosts concerts, theater, and community events. Many other landmarks also enrich Riverside’s historical landscape. The Heritage House offers a glimpse into Victorian-era life, complete with period furnishings and lush gardens. Remnants of the city’s early Chinatown tell the story of Chinese immigrants who contributed to Riverside’s growth. The Harada House, a National Historic Landmark, preserves a pivotal chapter in Japanese-American civil rights history. Visitors can explore these sites on their own or join guided tours that bring Riverside’s stories to life. Interpretive signage and local museums provide context and insight into the city’s evolving identity.

COMMUNITY TRADITIONS AND PRESERVATION

Riverside’s historic buildings and monuments provide a beautiful backdrop for the celebrations that showcase its living heritage. Each year, festivals and events celebrate the community’s rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. From the Festival of Lights that transforms downtown into a holiday wonderland to other cultural events throughout the year, Riverside is home to gatherings that bring people together in meaningful ways. This focus on preservation is no accident. Falcone notes that, as many cities embraced demolition in the mid-20th century, “Riversiders largely rejected this fad and moved towards preservation of the historic built environment.” That dedication is reflected today in the city’s Cultural Heritage Board, which reviews development in historic areas to ensure that growth and character can coexist. Organizations such as the Mission Inn Foundation, the Old Riverside Foun-

dation, and the Riverside Historical Society collaborate with the city to preserve important sites and educate future generations. Efforts currently underway include establishing Riverside’s first mid‑century historic district and bringing back student tours of City Hall. Falcone sees preservation as a smart investment, adding, “For every dollar invested in historic preservation, a minimum of twenty dollars is returned. Young people are showing that they want to live in historic, walkable downtowns that have embraced the eclectic, funky character of city centers.”

LOOKING AHEAD – HONORING THE PAST, INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

As Riverside continues to grow, it remains committed to honoring the foundations that made it special. New development projects aspire to incorporate historic preservation alongside innovation, striking a balance between progress and respect for the past. While embracing new ideas like green technology is a priority, The City of Riverside emphasizes the philosophy that preserving and reusing older structures is both environmentally responsible and culturally enriching for both residents and tourists visiting the area.Visitors are encouraged to discover this legacy firsthand, to walk the same streets where generations have built, dreamed, and created. In doing so, you become part of Riverside’s ongoing story as a place where heritage inspires the future.

Riverside’s love of the arts is woven into the very walls of its most celebrated buildings. The Fox Performing Arts Center, a restored “roaring 20s” theater that once premiered Gone with the Wind, now hosts Broadway touring shows, musicians, comedians. Its ornate architecture and marquee lights create the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening. Nearby, the Riverside Municipal Auditorium offers a distinct atmosphere. This landmark blends Spanish Revival design with modern production. Many visitors find their schedules pair well with an evening performance here. Smaller stages and local venues also round out Riverside’s arts scene. Music lounges, independent theater companies, and open mic nights showcase regional talent, and checking performance calendars ahead of time is recommended since many events sell out quickly.

BARS, BREWERIES & NIGHTLIFE DISTRICTS

Riverside comes alive at night with a mix of late-night gathering spots clustered within easy walking distance. Neighborhood favorites and music-driven venues create a scene that feels social and active without becoming overwhelming. Killer Queens stands out as a flexible nightlife space that blends live entertainment with a community-driven approach. The venue regularly hosts events, with programming that shifts throughout the week, from Vinyl Night on Mondays to rotating live music later in the week. Food service runs late, with the kitchen open until midnight, and the bar’s happy hour extends into the evening. While strictly 21+, its atmosphere reflects a broad mix of patrons and events rather than a single nightlife formula. Nearby, Farm House Collective carries its daytime energy into the evening with live music, themed events, and an open-air setting that encourages people to gather and stay awhile. Estrella Cantina & Lounge brings a more elevated nightlife experience, pairing a lively atmosphere with curated cocktails and late-night dining in a polished setting. Dapper Dine & Lounge offers a stylish, social environment where guests can settle in for craft drinks, music, and a more intimate night out. Riverside’s breweries and taprooms also contribute to the evening scene, pouring everything from crisp IPAs to rich stouts. Many extend their hours on weekends, making it easy to include a brewery stop as part of an evening out. Most nightlife spots are busiest between 8 p.m. and midnight, while weeknights tend to move at a more relaxed pace.

“Killer Queens stands out as a flexible nightlife space that blends live entertainment with a community-driven approach.” UNIQUE EXPERIENCES & INTERACTIVE FUN

For something different, Riverside Game Lab blends classic pinball machines and modern VR experiences with a rotating lineup of craft beers and cocktails. It’s a lively option for those looking for a playful twist on the evening. Escape rooms and themed attractions nearby add another layer of after-dark fun, often running late into the night.

ollege sports have become a defining part of Riverside’s identity. The City is home to two Division I athletic programs—the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and California Baptist University (CBU)—placing Riverside among a small group of cities with multiple top-tier collegiate offerings. CBU’s recent move into the Big West Conference has brought renewed attention to its athletic programs and reignited a long-standing downtown rivalry with UCR. Matchups in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and other sports now carry added conference stakes, drawing larger crowds and increasing regional visibility. These games bring energy to campus venues and nearby neighborhoods, reinforcing Riverside’s growing reputation as a college sports destination. 28

G R E AT E R R I V E R S I D E C H A M B E R S O F CO M M E R C E

Additional competition comes from Riverside City College, whose athletic programs regularly contend at the state level, and La Sierra University, which hosts intercollegiate contests throughout the academic year. Together, these institutions create a steady calendar of games and events that invite residents and visitors to experience Riverside through college athletics.

A GROWING SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT LANDSCAPE

Riverside’s investment in sports extends well beyond campus venues. Plans are moving forward on the Riverside Sports Complex & Entertainment District, a Chamber-supported project designed to transform the City’s Northside into a regional destination. The proposed development includes a 5,000-seat soccer stadium, a large concert venue, a hotel, mixed-use residential buildings, and supporting amenities. The district will @rivchamber

F @RiversideChamber

connect with the Northside Specific Plan and complement other approved projects already reshaping the area. One of those projects is the Riverside Adventure Center, an 85-acre destination anchored by a landscaped public park that links to Reid Park. Free amenities will include biking and hiking trails, climbing areas, play spaces, and open areas for recreation. Visitors will be able to access world-class attractions such as a whitewater rafting course, wave lagoon with surf park, zip-line and rope courses, sport climbing walls, and an amphitheater. Adding to this momentum, Riverside is preparing to welcome professional men’s and women’s soccer teams through a partnership between the United Soccer League (USL) and Riverside Pro Soccer. The announcement aligns with the City’s approval of the Riverside Sports Complex & Entertainment District and signals a major step forward in expanding professional athletics in the region.

PARKS, TRAILS, AND OUTDOOR RECREATION

Riverside’s established park system continues to support daily recreation and outdoor activity across the city. Fairmount Park remains a central gathering place with open lawns, lakes, gardens, and amenities that support casual recreation. Mount Rubidoux offers one of Riverside’s most recognizable fitness experiences, with a well-maintained trail leading to panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains. Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Park, spanning more than 1,500 acres, provides trails for hiking and nature exploration. Throughout the city, neighborhood parks and shared-use paths make it easy to stay active close to where people live and visit.

FITNESS, FAMILIES, AND EVERYDAY RECREATION

Indoor fitness options add balance to Riverside’s recreation offerings. Gyms, yoga and pilates studios, aquatic centers, and community facilities provide opportunities for structured workouts and guided classes. Many locations welcome visitors with short-term access or dropin options. Families benefit from a wide range of youth and all-ages programs hosted at parks and community centers. Seasonal camps and leagues introduce young participants to organized athletics while encouraging teamwork and confidence.

A CITY ON THE MOVE

Riverside’s approach to sports and recreation reflects its broader growth. Competitive college athletics, major new infrastructure, and accessible outdoor spaces all contribute to a city that values movement and activity.

Riverside’s independent shops add depth to its shopping scene. Local galleries, gift stores, and specialty markets feature handcrafted items by regional artists. Many shop owners share the stories behind their products, giving purchases a personal connection to the City. This creative spirit comes together during Riverside Artswalk, held on the first Thursday of each month from 6 to 9 p.m. The event spans more than 22 downtown locations and is coordinated by the Riverside Arts Council. Artists on Main, located between 5th and 10th Streets, serves as a central hub for vendors

and exhibitions, encouraging visitors to explore the Downtown shops and restaurants along the way.

SHOPPING AT AN EASY PACE

Together, these districts and centers show how shopping in Riverside extends beyond transactions. It becomes part of how people experience the city.
