Welcome LETTERS

S

ausalito is more than a picturesque view of San Francisco; we are a proud community abundant with artists, executives, parents, mariners, activists and entrepreneurs. We value the environment and strive to be best in class stewards of the incredible estuary that adjoins us. We are the home of a diverse history, from indigenous people to wartime boat construction to the creation of pop culture and music. I invite you to participate in the quality of life elements that Sausalito provides its residents and visitors alike. Our tremendous variety of restaurants that serve world class culinary experiences distinct in both menu and atmosphere. Sausalito’s dedication to the arts is apparent from our residential artist enclaves to the public displays throughout town. Easy access to water recreation, boat charters, fishing and wildlife viewing along with our sunny skies and exceptional air quality makes Sausalito one of the healthiest communities in California. Our tranquil town is close enough to the rest of the bay for your day excursions making Sausalito the ideal spot for a quiet nights’ sleep. I want to thank the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce for taking on the Sausalito Guide project. Our Chamber provides resources and opportunities dedicated to the development and promotion of the professional and cultural well-being of our sea-side town. On behalf of the City Council, I welcome you to Sausalito and hope you experience the best of our community.

Joe Burns Mayor

I

am honored to be a part of this community, and I look forward to what the future holds. Just a little more than a year ago I decided to make a move from Hollister, California (San Benito County), to Marin County to be closer to family and was excited to have the opportunity to become the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce President/CEO. This unique bay-side village has a small population of 7500 but hosts thousands of visitors throughout the year. We are situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, 6 miles from San Francisco and only an hour north to Wine Country. We welcome visitors to “Stay in Sausalito and Visit San Francisco.” We have something for everyone from our unique artist community and world class restaurants to kayaking on the Bay. What child would not want to visit The Marine Mammal Center, The Bay Model or the Bay Area Discovery Museum for inspiration, imagination and exploration? Sausalito is California’s version of Portofino, Italy, with its small village feel and wonderful Bay views. We welcome you to enjoy our little slice of Italy during the off season from October – March and avoid the crowds, but if you must, we welcome you any time of the year. I want to thank the current chamber members and board of directors who are the catalysts for making our organization effective. I encourage all those who do business in Sausalito to join us at the chamber as we unite to shape an even stronger chamber with benefits for all who live, shop, own businesses, work and travel here. Enjoy this guide and membership directory, and if you have further questions call the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, 415-331-7262.

ome come via the short ferry ride. Others choose to take an adventurous bicycle ride over the Golden Gate bridge then hop the ferry back to San Francisco. Some spend the night at one of our cozy hotels, linger over breakfast at one of the wonderful restaurants overlooking the bay and spend the day wandering our quaint little town. Whether visiting for two hours or two days, you’ll find fun shopping, delicious dining and scenery that will simply take your breath away. Read on for our tips on what to see and do in our little stretch of paradise.

Two Hours

• Walk south along Bridgeway from the center of town for scenic photographs, fresh air and exercise. Take in all the sights and sounds – the seals frolicking in the bay (including the famous sea lion statue), the SF Skyline as well as the Mediterranean hillside above the waterfront. • Go as far as Swedes Beach via the wooden boardwalk and see the legendary Sally Stanford’s former establishment on the southern most corner. • Walk back to town and browse through art galleries and boutiques, including the hidden courtyard on Princess Street. • Lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants with spectacular views such as Angelino’s, Barrel House Tavern, The Trident, Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib, Scoma’s, Seafood Peddler or The Spinnaker Restaurant just to name a few. • Walk off your lunch by strolling along the marinas and boardwalks and admire the harbors full of boats. • Head back to San Francisco via the ferry or drive north to Muir Woods. • Sausalito is the perfect gateway to west Marin County and the California coastline as well as the wonders of the wine country.

Art & CULTURE Annual Labor Day Weekend Celebration One of the nation’s oldest, most prestigious and anticipated openair art festivals, the Sausalito Art Festival is held in our waterfront village. More than 250 awardwinning artists from around the country will join in excess of 30,000 attendees to combine art, music, food and wine. Known for its entertainment lineup, special exhibitions, food, beer and wine, the festival has something for everyone. Artists are selected by jury process and exhibit a range of work, including painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, glass, fiber and fashion, wood, mixed media and more. The

20

Festival is considered by artists, art collectors and art fair fans to be a must-see event, and Sausalito itself has long been regarded as

one of the world’s great artist communities. Each year more than 1,000 volunteers keep the festival running and non-profit organizations keep the food booths running smoothly. You can find delectable options from BBQ’d turkey legs and specialty tacos to fresh organic quinoa salad made locally at Driver’s Market and served by the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce. This weekend of art can be enjoyed while staying in one of our hotels just walking distance from the Festival. Casa Madrona Hotel & Spa and The Inn Above Tide provide views of the Bay. The charming The Gables inn Hotel, originally built in 1869, was the first hotel in Sausalito.

Famous Sea Lion – Photo Opportunity Sculptor Al Sybrian’s statue of a Sea Lion graces the edge of the Bay in Sausalito and is an enduring symbol of the city. It draws visitors from all over the world and is surrounded by water at high tide. Located on a rocky outcropping just offshore at high tide and exposed on the rocks at low tide, the statue goes

unnoticed by many passersby. Your photo opportunity is along the Bridgeway Promenade where the road bends just south of The Trident and Scoma’s restaurants. A small stairway leads from the sidewalk down to the lower pathway by the rocks beside the statue. A commemorative plaque is located at the top of the stairs.

Floating Homes – A Walk through History Waterfront living goes as far back as the 1880s, when colonies of “arks” existed off Belvedere and on the creeks of Larkspur. Arched roofs, sliding doors and decks fore and aft were hallmarks of ark design. Used chiefly as warm weather recreational boats in various quiet waterways, they were called arks – as opposed to houseboats — because they were designed to float on the bay waters at high tide and to sit on the mud flats at low tide. They were also pulled ashore during the winter. After the earthquake and fire of 1906, many arks were adapted for full-time residential use by families left homeless. Shortly after California achieved statehood in 1850, Richardson’s o.org |

Bay had been subdivided into underwater lots to create a West Coast Venice with canals and city streets. When the idea failed to materialize, the state sold the tideland lots into private ownership,

but retained title to a number of the “underwater streets”. If you see what looks like a vacant berth, it’s most likely one of those mythical streets. When the World War II liberty shipyards were returned to

civilian use, free spirits, artists and philosophers began living on abandoned ferries and floating homes made from surplus military vessels such as landing craft and lifeboats. This artistic and cultural center greatly expanded during the peace and love era of the 1960s. Artists, writers, photographers and entrepreneurs are inspired daily by the beauty of the waterfront. A walk along the docks will bring you peace, will highlight the artistic talent of the floating home owners and give you many photo opportunities. The Sausalito floating home community is a magical place.

clay, fiber, photography, jewelry, sculpture, and digital media. Since 1968 the ICB artists have always welcomed the public to come into their working studios during the Winter Open Studios event held during the first weekend in December. Anyone can have the opportunity to meet the artists and talk to them about their unique creative processes and their artwork. Many of the artists

make commissioned work and some even offer to teach privately or in a workshop setting, a great team building activity for groups or corporations. Some ICB artists also participate in the Marin Open Studios the first two weekends of May. In addition, there are many “Artist At Work” days spread throughout the year to give the public an up close chance to witness creations in the making.

ICB Artists Sausalito The landmark ICB (Industrial Center Building), located in Sausalito’s historic Marinship District, was built in 1942 as part of a large shipyard complex during WWII. Formerly known as the “Mold Loft”, the ICB is where templates and mock-ups were made in order to fabricate the raw steel for the workhorse Liberty Ships. At the start of the 1950s, artists became attracted to its big open spaces, natural light and cheap rents. Today this three story historic structure is a working studio to more than 100 artists. Many of their pieces are exhibited locally and some even internationally. If you’re lucky enough to attend one of their open studio weekends you’ll witness artists creating in a changing array of mediums including oil and acrylics, pastels, egg tempera, o.org |

Dining IN SAUSALITO Sausalito – Get Away Without Going Away Whether you’re just passing through, you live on the other side of the bridge, or you’re looking for a weekend getaway, Sausalito is the food destination you’ve been craving. As a suburb of San Francisco and one of the happiest sea side towns, Sausalito maintains the bohemian, artistic vibe that was first established in the 1950s. Not only does this small town boast a celebrity chef, James Beard competition entrees, and a few Michelin honored establishments; but also the breathtaking views of San Francisco, Angel Island, Mt. Tamalpais and the bayside communities of Belvedere and Tiburon make this unique artists’ community a dining experience you’ll always remember. With an array of locally sourced organic

26

ingredients and gluten free options there’s something for everyone to enjoy while soaking in that laid back California-casual ambiance. Reflecting the community’s eclectic style – where fine art galleries are sprinkled amongst a plethora of retail stores– a range of authentic international cuisines are represented from Italian, Mexican, Indian and Japanese to some of the freshest seafood in the bay area.

Get Hooked The sea to table mentality reigns supreme in all of the seafood restaurants in Sausalito. As a fivetime winner of the Pacific Sun’s Best of Marin contest for Best Seafood Restaurant, Seafood Peddler strives to use only the highest quality yet affordable live Dungeness crab, wild caught gulf prawns, local Petrale Sole, Hawaiian Swordfish

and Ahi Tuna, delivered fresh from fishermen daily. Feel like having a special meal but don’t want to sit down for dinner? Although it’s hard to pass up their spectacular bay view, Seafood Peddler offers a diverse catch and carry menu at their carefully curated fish market, so you can even have an amazing seafood dinner at home. Another town staple, Scoma’s Sausalito is perfect for a family gathering or a romantic date is an enchanting waterfront treasure. Floating out over the bay, Scoma’s delights with steaming whole crabs, rich hearty chowders, perfectly grilled seasonal fish and many other house specialties, like their shellfish sauté, brimming with crab legs, prawns, scallops and clams. Scoma’s seasonal fresh offerings and perennial favorites keep the menu as lively and colorful as the daily

proteins (Fish) available. A true surf and turf experience awaits at Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib. For the seafood enthusiast, only Pacific Ocean Dungeness crab that weighs at least two plus pounds will grace your plate, and for the one less inclined to indulge in the ocean’s delicacies, well-marbled true prime cut is served as rare as possible with the obligatory sides of jus and horseradish dip. If you’re looking for local, sustainable and ethically sourced seafood you can’t go wrong at any of these family owned joints.

When in Sausalito Even if your mother cooks Italian food you still don’t have an excuse to not try all of the Italian eateries in Sausalito. The reverence for Italian culture is palpable as you explore this quaint town where you’re sure to find a restaurant that honors the region in Italy Mom isn’t from. Nothing feels more charmingly European in Sausalito than sitting on an outside patio sipping some espresso or wine and soaking in the action on Bridgeway. Angelino’s

catch. With one of the best city views in town, Scoma’s is committed to incredibly fresh, deceptively simple, and creatively presented dining with a warm personal touch. Scoma’s groovy neighbor, The Trident, has been a favorite stomping ground for many famous patrons like Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Joan Baez, Clint Eastwood, and the Smothers Brothers. Today The Trident is just as happening, with a vibrant variety of seafood and classic fare with a focus on umami and global flavors. Directly above The Trident is the world renowned Ondine, a premium venue space with waterfront dining, panoramic views and upscale American cuisine. A local favorite, Fish Restaurant, an easy bike ride from the main downtown area, prides itself on knowing the name of the vessel, the fisherman who owns that boat and the manner in which every fish they take delivery of is caught. Their passion for the sustainability of oceans and rivers exudes through their thoughtful use of the limited and ever depleting amount of o.org |

Dining IN SAUSALITO is one of the longest standing restaurants despite its many Italian competitors and draws high marks for its authentic food. Leveraging both its bay and city views, this successful kitchen focuses on Southern Italian cuisine and makes everyone feel comfortable in their “feel free to speak Italian with us” atmosphere. After 16 years in Sausalito, Poggio Trattoria, nestled under the Casa Madrona Hotel, manages to create a seamless inviting experience whether you sit inside or out on the patio underneath its broad curved archways. For

28

three years in a row Poggio has been awarded a Bib Gourmand, Michelin International’s list of great, yet affordable restaurants. And for good reason. They meld classic Italian fare with California’s freshest local ingredients, letting them shine without a lot of fuss. Their seasonally inspired familystyle Tuesday Night Suppers are yet another reason locals and visitors alike remain true. Aurora Ristorante, named after the owner’s jovial wife, puts as much love and care into their classic Italian dishes as mom does. Wine connoisseurs will also appreciate vintage Italian

and California wines—a selection that has earned its place on a world stage with emphasis on fruit purity and reasonable prices. Sandrino is home to a husband and wife team who moved to Sausalito from the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige regions of Italy. Living out their American dream, the pair celebrates their heritage by sharing with guests only the finest Northern Italian dishes. You’re sure to feel like family after indulging in the food they grew up eating. Taste of Rome, a popular café style restaurant, in the most literal sense transports

you to the streets of Rome. Here you get the unique experience of a local coffee house and a bustling Italian sidewalk café serving up tasty sandwiches, pizzas and pasta dishes. They’re also known to host game day celebrations for sports fans and evening live music on the weekends. It’s hard to come by a truly traditional Mediterranean style deli like Venice Gourmet, especially in Marin County. This Delicatessen is a family owned and operated marketplace that’s been around since 1969. They pride themselves on their full-service deli where they prepare sandwiches and salads to order for you to enjoy on their outside patio or take out for a picnic on the water. While you wait for your meal to be prepared be sure to check out their gourmet boutique gift shop with an extensive selection of international fine foods, premium wines, copper kitchenware and wine accessories.

Every Hour in Sausalito is Happy Along with amazing places to eat, Sausalito has scores of fun alfresco places to imbibe, and those not to miss local spots will surely elevate your typical happy hour hang. Barrel House Tavern is a Sausalito favorite and offers a locally sourced menu, stunning San Francisco Bay views, and accommodating service. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday with drink specials from

noon to seven and then to curb all your “drunchies,” the food specials start at three and end at seven also. With seven different food options that are guaranteed to fill you up with a selection of draft beers, wines, and well cocktails Barrel House knows how to keep you coming back to enjoy their regular menu and fine drinks. Happy hour at Seafood Peddler is every day of the week from four to seven only in the bar area. Choose w ww.s aus ali to.org |

Sometimes referred to as Sausalito’s Cheers, you’re sure to have a good time if you head down to Saylor’s Restaurant and Bar for a taste of Cabo in Marin. They have a happy hour Monday to Friday from four to seven with smaller plates also on the menu. Got tequila? Saylor’s does. With more than 200 types of tequila this is a must check out spot even if you don’t make it in time for their happy hour. They also feature delicious lunch and dinner food specials that won’t disappoint. If you’re

30

just looking to drink, The Trident features a four to seven happy hour Monday through Friday so you can enjoy the view from where many celebrities back in the 1960s used to drink. Although Smitty’s doesn’t feature a happy hour menu, as far as dive bars go this is as good as it gets. Cold beers on tap, pool table, darts, shuffleboard, 7 HD TVs… what more could you want?

If a boating adventure is what you are seeking for your children, how about sailing on a traditional wooden tall ship? Sausalito’s Matthew Turner is an experiential learning vessel designed after the ship Galilee, which was built in the late 1800’s by ship designer Matthew Turner. The Matthew Turner is an educational vessel which serves middle school aged youth and engages them in marine environmental education. Nothing is better for kids than expressing their ability to play and

imagine. The Bay Area Discovery Museum is a place where even adults can be a child again. STEMfocused, inquiry-driven experiences that help children develop creativity and creative problem solving skills. Bay Area Discovery Museum has something for every child from outdoor painting to Imagination Playground with soft oversized foam blocks. Best for ages 0-10. The Marine Mammal Center located just outside of Sausalito is where marine life come to recoup. Educational tours include watching the sea lions being fed or medical staff helping an injured animal. You can enjoy a self-guided tour or special classroom programs. usiness BIN SAUSALITO Living Maritime Tradition in Sausalito

Boat and ship building have been a continuing activity in Sausalito from the earliest European settlers to the present. The Cove in Old Town provides the ideal site for construction and repair of boats. The flat, protected beach and plentiful supply of wood and water were noted by the earliest observers. Sausalito founder Captain William Richardson worked on his boats there in the 1840s. Photographs of the 1880s show fishing feluccas in the Cove and elsewhere along Sausalito’s waterfront when boatbuilding was mainly a family affair. By 1890 the California Launch Building Company was established near the foot of Richardson Street in

36

Old Town. Brixen and Munfrey’s Boatyard was in the Cove around 1900, and the Reliance Boat and Ways Company was located there in the 1920s, turning out yachts, launches, and barges. Legendary shipbuilder and designer Matthew Turner did most of his work in Benicia, but several of his yachts were berthed in Sausalito. His masterwork, the brigantine Galilee, set records for the fastest crossings to and from Tahiti in 1891. Today, a local non-profit, “Call of the Sea”, has built a new wooden tall ship bearing his name. It can be seen at the Bay Model just north of downtown Sausalito. The best-known boatbuilders in Old Town were the Nunes Brothers Boat and Ways Company, established in 1925. Manuel and

Antonio Nunes came from the Azores in the 1890s and were boat builders on the Sacramento River and in Oakland constructing tugboats, barges and other utilitarian craft. In Sausalito they took over the Reliance operation at Second and Main Streets and for the next thirty-five years Nunes Brothers produced a variety of power and sailing vessels, including successful racing boats. Perhaps the most famous of these was the graceful 127-foot schooner Zaca. It was commissioned by banker Templeton Crocker and launched in 1930. Later it was owned by Hollywood swashbuckler Errol Flynn. World War II brought the Marinship shipyard, which changed Sausalito forever. Built in just three months in 1942, the sprawling

of the Marinship area and other educational programs are offered regularly. Today, Sausalito retains a working waterfront on this section of town, where many craftspeople continue to practice traditional boatbuilding techniques. The centerpiece of this working waterfront is the Spaulding Marine Center. Named after yacht designer, builder and sailor Myron Spaulding, the center provides

yard was launching a new ship every eleven days at its peak. Some 20,000 workers were recruited from around the country, and they all had to be housed, fed, educated and entertained. Quite an impact on a village of 3,000 people! Many of the shipyard recruits were women and minorities, which marked a turning point in the integration of America’s workforce.

Some of the original Marinship buildings have been preserved and repurposed. The old warehouse is now home to the Bay Model Visitors Center. Open to the public on Marinship Way, just east of Bridgeway, the center contains a hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay, a display of Marinship memorabilia, and an art gallery with rotating exhibits. Walking tours

a valuable bridge to the San Francisco Bay Area’s rich maritime history, and opportunities for people of all ages to engage in preserving, sharing, and celebrating the Bay Area’s maritime history. With its working 20,000 sq. ft. boatyard, nautical library, historic sailboats, and skilled craftspeople, Spaulding is both a link to the past and a promise for the future. Strolling Sausalito’s working waterfront provides a unique perspective for visitors and locals alike. —By Larry Clinton o.org |

Business IN SAUSALITO Jumbo & Pee-Wee Come to Sausalito – Vina del Mar Park

The Vina del Mar Park holds some interesting architectural elements. When the San Francisco 1915 Panama-Pacific Fair was created, many temporary buildings and accents were created out of an industrial-strength paper mache designed to last a year. Global artists were represented at this world-class event; about 1500 full-size sculptures adorned the 635-acre complex. Among the large sculptures on display were examples of classical-era art formats in fountains, statues and architectural accents. The famous “Court of the Universe” complex was designed by William B. Faville, from Sausalito. Faville commissioned twelve fullsize African Gray elephants, decked in finery, to be produced by the well-known ‘McKim, Mead & White design firm in New York City. At the conclusion of the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the displays were destroyed. William B. Faville could not bear the thought of his beautiful elephants being destroyed, so he ferried his favorite

During the Great Depression, money was not available to have Jumbo and Pee-Wee professionally reconstructed out of original materials. Instead, the best elephant was used to create a mold that was used to pour the two identical cement elephants that are found in the Vina del Mar Park today. The modern Vina del Mar Park elephants are among the most photographed sights in Sausalito.
