Mesquite, Nevada has become a very popular place in the last couple of years and the word is getting out!

Mesquite Chamber of Commerce is growing also. We host a monthly business networking luncheon, a quarterly breakfast, an annual golf tournament, ribbon cuttings, grand openings, open houses and special events. Joining the Mesquite Chamber is a smart business decision and you get the most for your marketing dollars. Our luncheons are well attended and it gives businesses the chance to network with a lot of people in a short time. We always have well organized events, great speakers and interesting topics. Mesquite has been my home for the past 7 years. We enjoy the amazing views all around us and the climate. Summers get a little warm, but the rest of the year offsets the heat. Mesquite is known for the magnificent golf courses, OHV riding, pickleball, hiking and playing your favorite games in our casinos.

Mesquite is located just 80 miles North of Las Vegas on I-15 and 40 miles South of the Utah border. You can enjoy the peacefulness and tranquility of Mesquite, travel North for a day of shopping or head South to Vegas for some nightlife. Coming back home to Mesquite is the best feeling at the end of the day. Golf is one of the many things Mesquite is known for. The golf courses are close to accommodations, making for a short drive, offer a variety of courses that match your skill level and have some of the most breathtaking backdrops. If you love golf, then Mesquite is for you.

Conestoga Golf Club located in the Del Webb Sun City Community, is on everybody’s bucket list to play when in Mesquite. A Gary Panks designed course that keeps bringing you back to play, this 18-hole championship course offers breathtaking desert views of Mesquite and lush green fairways. After your round, enjoy a delicious lunch at the 1880 Grille while dining indoors or on the scenic patio.

Oasis Golf Club offers not one, but two courses for you to choose from; The Palmer Golf Course and The Canyons Golf Course. This is Mesquite’s only

36-hole golf facility. The Palmer and Canyons are masterpieces designed by Arnold Palmer. The Palmer offers spectacular panoramic views and is rated as one of the “Top 10 You Can Play” by Golf Digest. The Canyons Course is rated more challenging than the Palmer. It is a great course that may require you to use all of the clubs in your bag.

Mesquite enjoys a warm desert climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year. Perfect for golf!

Coyote Springs Golf Club is one of Jack Nicklaus’ finest creations in golf courses. This is a hidden gem that’s just a little over an hour’s drive from Mesquite. This course offers 11 lakes and 13 target greens. Nestled between several mountains, the course offers exceptional views and spectacular golf, making it worth the drive.

Palms Golf Course straddles the Nevada and Arizona borders. Its namesake says it all, the fairways are lined with lush palm trees and it has numerous water features. This is a great course for photo opportunities, so be sure your camera is ready for some scenic shots.

Coyote Willows Golf Course is a 9-Hole, USGA rated Par 35 public golf course. This is the perfect course for the beginner or for the seasoned golfer. Though this course is small, it offers one of the longest holes in Mesquite when played from the tips. Beautiful ponds and panoramic mountain views provide for a relaxing round of golf.

Arts and History

Donkey History Museum opened in November 2022 on W Mesquite Blvd, and it has a wonderful display of donkey memorabilia. The collection includes vintage toys, figurines, paintings and vintage photographs. The museum traces the important role donkeys played in history in the Western Hemisphere. There is a gift shop inside the museum, and there is no cost for admission.

Tuacahn located just one hour north of Mesquite in Ivins, Utah offers world class family entertainment in a majestical setting. Tuacahn offers Broadway musicals, concerts and events. There’s even a Saturday market to do some shopping, and The Tuacahn Café offers tasty food and snacks while you are enjoying a show or shopping.

Annual events in Mesquite draw visitors from all over the United States and locals alike. Mesquite Motor Mania thrills car enthusiasts each January and features over 900 cars. You will see classics, Rat Rods and imports. Spectators will see and hear the excitement of Burn Out and Slow Drag competition as contestants compete for $15,000 in cash and prizes. Over 260 Total Awards, including Top 150 Vehicles, plus Dignitary Picks & Sponsors Awards, Specialty Awards, Crowd Pleasers Awards, People’s Choice, Participant’s Pick & More.

Mesquite Hot Air Balloon Festival also happens in January and the amazing balloons launch from the parking lot across from the CasaBlanca Resort. The balloons float across Interstate 15 in Mesquite. CasaBlanca Resort offers a Night Glow Candlestick event with the balloon operators and there is free ad-

mission. There’s lots of beautiful photo opportunities during this event.

Super Run is the second car show that happens in September each year. This classic car show is a three-day event that’s not to be missed. There’s lots of cash and prizes awarded and it is open to all types, makes and models of classic vehicles.

Q: How did Cinnamon Café come about?

Questions with Jackie Buffington, Owner of Cinnamon Café

We recently had the chance to sit down and chat with the owner of Cinnamon Cafe, Jackie Buffington, to discuss one of Mesquite’s favorite places to eat!

A: It came from my family having breakfast together. My Mother used to make cinnamon tea and then we started making cinnamon coffee so that’s why you see the cinnamon coffee in our café every day. When I smell the cinnamon it reminds me of home, family and my Mom.

Q: What is your favorite meal of the day?

A: Breakfast for sure

Q: We see a lot of information out there about the health benefits of using Cinnamon while cooking. Do you think your use of Cinnamon in your fabulous dishes plays a part of eating at your café?

Part of a healthy lifestyle?

A: Yes there are lots of benefits and of course we serve healthy food in our café such as salads, our breakfast foods like Eggs Benedict and Omelets.

Q: What is most of your customer’s favorite breakfast dishes at Cinnamon Café?

A: Our classic Eggs Benedict is a favorite with customers but the number one favorite is my Mom’s recipe of Chilaquiles with Carne Asada. This is tortilla chips cooked in green sauce with two eggs prepared any style and cheese. Crepes and Pancakes are also popular.

Q: The Cinnamon Apple Salad that appears on the cover of the Business Guide, where did the recipe come from?

A: I used to work at Mission Inn in Riverside CA and my boss Julie who is one of my best friends suggested that I need some Cinnamon dishes in my restaurant when I open. As a gift from my best friend, she created the Cinnamon Salad and Cinnamon Porkchops!

Q: When you go out for dinner what is your favorite meal to order?

A: I love food and can eat any cuisine like Chinese, Peruvian, Mexican, Japanese, American……it has to be a juicy, meaty hamburger. I enjoy a great cocktail or a glass of wine with my meal and there’s nothing better than having your family. I love coffee with my dessert. Food is my passion and I could spend all day talking about it. I love food!

Q: Did your mother cook international foods?

A: No, when I travelled to the US I started to enjoy a variety of foods from all over. I love trying new foods.

Q: Where were you born and did that influence your cooking?

A: I was born in Mexico City and the food there is amazing.

Q: Tell me about how a busy woman like yourself balances work and home? Plus you are a Mother too which adds to your plate?

A: I have 13 employees and we have a great relationship so there is lots of conversations. I am sure to let my employees know when we receive compliments about the food and service. My mind is always working and I like to try new ideas. I like competition also. I try to show my employees that it is good to enjoy your time off work. I have a 5 year old so I have to find balance. I always say “my job doesn’t care if I have a daughter and my daughter doesn’t care if I have a job”. Sometimes it’s difficult to separate work from home life but I try to spend quality time with my family. My daughter is very interested in working in a restaurant already at an early age. We let her help occasionally when the restaurant is closed and she earns a little money. She saves all of it!

Nevada

Nevada off-road OHV regulations requires either an OHV decal or street-legal license plate from any state. Nevada on-road OHV riding is not permitted, even with a valid license plate from your home state.

Nevada residents must purchase OHV decal to ride in the state off-road. Non-residents must have an OHV decal or street-legal license plate from their home state to ride off-road in Nevada. Non-residents, please be advised, your OHV is not street-legal. Nevada residents cannot make their OHV street legal (yet).

Following is required for riding OHV’s in Nevada:

Arizona

Mesquite is one of a few cities in Nevada that allows on-road use of an OHV on ALL streets when equipped properly.

Please ride responsibly in Mesquite to help retain this privilege. Mesquite defines OHV as: UTV / ATV / dirt bike.

Requirements for on-road use of an OHV:

• headlights, brake lights, & turn signals required

• side mirrors, or one side mirror with a rear view mirror

• eye protection (glasses, goggles, or windshield)

• seatbelt required for all occupants (if equipped from factory)

• 16 years old with a valid license

• valid insurance

If your machine doesn’t have all that safety equipment then it needs to be trailered to your off-roading destination. Now get out there, be safe, and have fun!

Utah

WOMEN WOMEN IN MESQUITE

The number of women owned businesses is growing in the United States in recent years and in particular, right here in Mesquite, Nevada. There are more than 13 million Women Owned businesses in the United States as of 2023 and globally one in three businesses has a woman in the driver’s seat. Women start over 800 businesses a day in the U.S.

As Mesquite grows, the Chamber expects to see more women taking the plunge to start up their own businesses to meet the needs of the community and to fulfill their dream of owning a business. Mesquite Chamber of Commerce dedicated their October 2023 luncheon to meet some of these entrepreneurial women to hear their stories. All six women were more than willing to giving advice for startups, sharing best practices and how to create the work life balance. The conversations were candid and you could sense that a lot of women who attended could empathize with them facing challenges of managing a business and a household. Meet some of these women on the next two pages and see if maybe they inspire you to fulfill your dream of owning your own business!

Susan Hunter

BARK! Canine Club & Resort

In 2001, Susan established Hunter Law Office, where she helped Indiana families protect and preserve their assets through effective planning at Hunter Estate & Elder Law. In 2019, Susan sold her majority interest in Hunter Estate & Elder Law and semi-retired to Mesquite, Nevada, where she resides with her husband, Mark and their rescue dogs, Wrigley & Woody. Susan is a founding member of the national organization Lawyers with Purpose, where she taught attorneys across the country the legal technical aspects of estate planning and elder law, she also founded Latchkey Training, authored “Breaking Through: Busting the Generational Barriers, co-authored “Protect Your IRA” with David J. Zumpano.

In 2021, Susan’s lifetime love of animals, and particularly dogs, combined with her natural entrepreneurial spirit led her to pivot into a new field, and she opened BARK Canine Club & Resort in Mesquite NV. BARK provides luxury doggie daycare and boarding services, as well as grooming and training classes. Now under construction, Susan’s vision includes a new state-of-the-art daycare and boarding facility, and also includes both indoor and outdoor dog parks, dock-diving pool, agility course and other amenities.

Susan is also now serving as a Mesquite Chamber Board of Directors Member for a 3-year term.

Jacqueline Buffington

Cinnamon Café

Jackie Buffington is the Owner and General Manager of Cinnamon Café, which opened in Mesquite in late 2022. Jackie was born in Mexico City and is married with one daughter. She holds a degree in International Business and a Financial Diploma.

Jackie has held management positions with the Four Seasons Hotel, Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside CA, California Pizza Kitchen, PF Chang’s and Krispy Kreme Corporation. Cinnamon Café was started by Jackie in California is now located here in Mesquite inside the Mojave Edge Hotel.

She has always been passionate about cooking and being in the restaurant business and that is the path she wanted to be on. Several of her signature dishes and coffee include cinnamon, one of her mother’s favorite spices, thus the name Cinnamon Café. Jackie says that success is not by accident but a result of hard work, patience, learning and sacrifice.

Lyndsay Piazza

Fixxology

Lyndsay Piazza first met her husband while in High School in 1998. They were married 2 years later and are now parents to 5 amazing kids. She finds passion in serving others and values making people smile. Dreaming that one day she could implement these qualities into a successful business that gives back to the community. Hard work is no stranger to her. With the support of her husband, she attended college, focused on business, while raising her young children and working the graveyard shift at Mesa View Regional Hospital. She knew opening Fixxology would allow her to grow her business while making it possible to keep her dreams alive. Fixxology offers a variety of custom mixed soda, cookies and other delicious snacks.

Lyndsay also runs a Fixxology Food Truck that can cater special events. Her store won the 2023 “Best of Mesquite Chamber” Hospitality Award and the New Business of the Year Award.

Hannah is a mother to 2 small children and is inspired from the hectic tiny moments that happen in her daily life. She loves Mesquite and loves showing off the beauty that is found here in Mesquite every day.

Charlotte Sirianni

Juniper Outpost

Charlotte is in her 3rd year as a Mesquite resident and is a native of Minnesota. She launched Juniper Outpost in March of 2022. Her vision for “JO” was to open a local artisan gift shop that provides the community of Mesquite an opportunity to shop for products offered by regional small batch vendors and artists. During the 18 months since Juniper Outpost, opened Charlotte’s local artists program has grown from approximately 10 local artists, creators & makers to over 40. Charlotte reflects on customer comments/ feedback when curating product selection, features local artists at special events, and gives back to her community.

Juniper Outpost won the 2023 “Best of Mesquite Chamber” Woman Owned Business of the Year. Guests visiting her store can expect one on one top notch customer service right down to the bag your items are placed in when you leave the store. It is truly boutique shopping at it’s finest.

Kristen Whetzel

Whetzel & Co Interior Design Studio

Kristen began a career in Real Estate 20 years ago, eventually opening her own brokerage. Conestoga Golf Club brought her family to Mesquite, a community full of faces and places she loves.

Kristen’s need to create called to her and she made her talents official, completing her Interior Design Program at the New York institute of Art and Design. She merged her two passions to form a family company, Whetzel & Co Interior Design. “Design is in the details; it weaves form and function into a space that uniquely reflects you.”

Kristen Whetzel and her family team of designers are responsible for the sleek and professional look of the new Mesquite Chamber office. Kristen and her team took painstaking time to really design an office interior that was functional and gave it that “touch of class” look. New Year and New Options for Healthcare in Mesquite, NV!

During these changing times in delivering health care, recruiting a primary care provider for any rural community can be a substantial challenge, while successfully signing 6 PCPs would be considered nothing short of a miracle! Well, that’s exactly what Mesa View Medical Group in Mesquite, Nevada has been able to accomplish.

By the end of 2023, utilizing a strategy developed by Mesa View Regional Hospital CEO, Mr. Kelly Adams and Mesa View Medical Group Director, Mary Lyman, six new health care professionals including two physicians, have commenced their practices in Mesquite and are now seeing new patients!

Faced with a history of high provider turnover, coupled with the usual recruitment challenges associated with rural communities (such as lack of cultural and educational opportunities for children and adults, lack of community amenities available in larger population centers and lack of housing availability and transportation infrastructure), the two health care leaders implemented a strategy that emphasized the rural nature of the region rather than try to overcome deficiencies by overselling Mesquite’s proximity to key larger population centers. “We took the time to search for candidates who were seeking a more rural lifestyle or who have strong family ties and/

or history in the Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley region,” echoed Adams and Lyman. “It is a process that takes considerably more time and searching than is usual; however, we believe that the results will more than offset the extra time, by bringing us physicians and nurse practitioners who will be likely to stay in our communities for a longer period of time and become more personally involved and dedicated to our community initiatives and population groups,” they concluded.

Monthly Luncheons

Each month, the Chamber hosts a membership meeting luncheon for our members. This is an annual luncheon held in January. Members of the Chamber may nominate members in several different categories and then vote for their favorite nominee. The winners are announced at the January luncheon and presented with an engraved plaque.

At the November luncheon, Chamber members and non-members are encouraged to show their support by treating a veteran to lunch. In addition to the Chamber’s regular luncheon raffles, Veterans are treated to special raffle drawings and swag bags, just for them.

In December, the Chamber celebrates it members and volunteers at the annual “Mingle and Jingle Luncheon.” New Board Members are introduced and Board Members finishing their Board terms are thanked. Members having anniversaries for five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty-five years are recognized. The cover of the annual Business and Destination Guide is unveiled. This luncheon is one of the most popular luncheons with members and is highly attended.

As the temperature rises, what could be better than lunch by thve pool? Our April luncheon is held pool side at the CasaBlanca Resort. The Chamber typically has a speaker from the Entertainment/Travel Industry as the featured speaker.

“What’s Happening Mesquite” Breakfast

Four times a year, the Chamber hosts a “What’s Happening Mesquite” Breakfast. The breakfast provides the first 20 members who registered in advance to have an opportunity to have a free speaking slot to update the membership on their business and upcoming events.

Annual Golf Reception and Tournament

The Chamber’s annual golf tournament kicks off the day before with a golf reception. The reception offers appetizers, a silent auction, putting, chipping and a horserace contest. The tournament rotates each year to a member course and takes place on the first Saturday in August. Golfers enjoy a swag bag on arrival to their cart, continental breakfast and lunch. The event ends with the presentation of trophies and lots of raffle prize drawings. This event is one of the Chamber’s largest fundraisers.

“Hope Starts Here” Luncheon to benefit SafeNest

Mesquite Chamber holds an annual fundraiser luncheon in October (Domestic Violence Awareness Month) to benefit SafeNest – Mesquite Domestic Violence Shelter. Attendees are treated to a fabulous luncheon, the chance to win great raffles prizes, make donations to support SafeNest and to learn more from SafeNest in their journey to end domestic violence. SafeNest offers a variety of services to help their clients.

Small Business Saturday

The Chamber participates in the nationwide Small Business Saturday each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. The event is hosted by Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and is free to retailers in Mesquite to participate. All of the marketing is done by the Chamber at no charge to the retailers. It is an opportunity for the community to shop small and shop local to supports businesses in Mesquite.

Silver State Chambers of Commerce was formed in 2021 by founding members Jenney Sartin, CEO of the Pahrump Chamber, Carol Kolson, President/CEO of the Mesquite Chamber and Ann Silver, CEO of the Reno + Sparks Chamber. The SSCC serves as a State Chamber for Nevada Chamber Executives to discuss matter of public policy, to collaborate on relevant matters that may impact Chambers’ membership and statewide commerce, to promote Chambers’ activities, statewide tourism, economic development, sustainable jobs and training for statewide Chamber executives. Teacher Appreciation Brunch

Mesquite Chamber of Commerce held a Mesquite School District Teacher Appreciation Brunch to honor teachers in the Mesquite School District with the help of sponsors.
