ou have 48 hours in Manhattan Beach. Even though our fabled little beach town is known for its laidback vibe, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do. So, let’s do this right: your visit will begin and end at the Manhattan Beach Pier.

DAY ONE

Yes, you are on vacation, but in this rare instance, let us gently suggest an un-vacation-like thing to do. Get up early.

Because if you want to see Manhattan Beach in its most native state, you’ll want to head down to the pier as early as you are able—7ish is ideal, or at most an hour or so later, to achieve what is locally known as “getting your stoke.”

One of the specific quirks you’ll notice as you pass through the early waking hours of any true beach town is the curious behavior of that species of ocean-going mammals known as surfers. Heads pop out of windows and tousle-haired barefoot dudes run out onto the walk streets (the

Witness the Team USA Olympic beach volleyball teams training here. neighborhoods surrounding downtown have no streets, just sidewalks and back alleys) anxiously looking out towards the ocean with a single urgent question: Are there waves?

If so, as you walk out onto the pier, you’ll

have one of the best vantage points on the entire coast to watch the joyful process of surfers paddling into and catching waves.

And as you look down the long, beautiful beaches for which the town is named, you’ll behold another, somewhat superhuman species: beach volleyball players. Many of the best players in the world either live locally or train here, including several Team USA Olympic beach volleyball teams, and they’ll be diving and leaping on the courts just below.

After you take in the scene on the waves and on the beach, another perfect introduction to life at the beach awaits at the Roundhouse Aquarium. This small, but state-of-the-art marine wildlife facility at the end of the pier lovingly houses many local species, touch tanks, and a knowledgeable staff that will give you an introduction to the local ecosystem. Be sure to check out the octopuses on the second floor.

And then it’s time to do breakfast, old school Manhattan Beach-style, which can only mean Uncle Bill’s Pancake House.

Uncle Bill’s has been a Manhattan Beach

institution since 1961, which means it has outlasted trends, recessions, and the complete transformation of the downtown around it. The menu has evolved just enough to stay current, with additions like the Santa Fe omelette, for example, with chipotle sauce and avocado, but the signatures endure. The Expo ‘73 omelette (ham, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, onion and American cheese, topped with meat sauce and sour cream) has been on the menu since the year the VanAmburgh family bought the place, and if you order it, you will not need lunch. There will be a line on weekends because Uncle Bill’s is worth the wait.

With breakfast handled, you have a full day of Downtown Manhattan Beach ahead of you, and the best way to experience it is on foot. The downtown grid is compact enough to walk end to end in ten minutes, but plan on spending considerably more time than that.

Before you set out, coffee: goodboybob Coffee on Highland Avenue has quietly built an international reputation. The owner, Erich Joiner, is a commercial film director and production company head (he was in charge of the camera work on F1: the Movie) who became obsessed with the absence of a decent coffee shop near his Santa Monica office, so he eventually opened one himself. It was wildly successful, so Erich expanded to Manhattan Beach, half-expecting it to struggle in a much smaller town. It hasn’t. With impeccably sourced single-origin beans and espresso drinks expertly crafted by award-winning baristas, the line that appears at 9 a.m. every morning is for a good reason.

One note for those who packed a laptop: the Manhattan Beach Public Library right next door on Highland Avenue is a genuinely beautiful place to get something done, and Enclave, a co-working space just a few blocks from downtown, offers drop-in options if you need a proper desk.

Productive mornings have been built on worse foundations.

If you are a reader, {pages} a bookstore on Manhattan Avenue, is a warm little bastion of happy bookishness. The store

is expertly curated, staffed by kind and avid readers, with a recommendations section that is genuinely helpful. And while you’re in the neighborhood, step into Bo Bridges Gallery on Manhattan Avenue.

Bridges has photographed everything from Tom Cruise on Mission: Impossible to the X Games, but what people really want from his work isn’t the celebrities and athletes—it’s the playing fields. The waves without surfers. The mountains without skiers. What Bridges calls “mind surfing” photos—images so vivid and transporting that you feel yourself inside them. The gallery also has cool merchandise if you are looking for gifts or local mementos.

A few doors down, Tabula Rasa Essentials has been a downtown anchor since 2000, when owner Maureen McBride—an 18-year fashion industry executive—walked past a vacant storefront, fell in love with the neighborhood, and never looked back.

Equal parts modern apothecary, lifestyle boutique, and sensory experience, it is the kind of shop where you will stay longer than you planned.

If your sweet tooth is calling, two of the South Bay’s most beloved institutions are within easy reach. Becker’s Bakery and Deli has been a family operation since 1942— Harry Becker’s great granddaughter Kit

now runs the place. The bakery’s cinnamon, maple and bacon cupcake once made it to the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” The cake decorators here treat buttercream frosting as a sculptural medium, and the results are worth seeing. Only a block from the beach, Manhattan Beach Creamery hand-makes its ice cream in small batches daily, rotating flavors that run from straightahead classics to things like Bananas Foster and Maple Bacon Crunch. The Cream’wich, a scoop between two made-from-scratch cookies, has become a local mainstay.

By early-to-mid afternoon, the natural landing place is Simmzy’s—an open-air spot just above the pier with a great burger, a well-curated beer list, and the kind of unpretentious ease that Manhattan Beach does better than almost anywhere.

After lunch, make your way to Culture Brewing Co., and you will understand immediately why it has become a downtown MB social hub. Enjoy its open air, local

artists on the walls, and great craft beer—30 taps, including the popular Mosaic IPA and their Great American Beer Festivalwinning Blonde Ale. When evening arrives, you are in the heart of what has recently evolved into one of the better dining destinations in Los Angeles County. Downtown Manhattan Beach has always had good restaurants; over the last two decades it got great ones.

Mike Zislis was there first. A master brewer by the time he graduated from USC, he opened one of California’s first craft breweries in Manhattan Beach in the late 1980s. When the restaurant next door became available, he opened Rock ‘N Fish— drawing inspiration from Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, the big bar culture of Chicago, the art deco warmth of New York— and the town was ready for it. “We were busy the day we opened,” Zislis recalled.

A quarter century later it still is, the blue cheese wedge and the Kapalua ribeye as beloved as ever, the legendary Navy Grog rum cocktail still the most requested drink at the bar. The restaurant overlooks the pier.

Next door is brewco, which two decades ago was Zislis’s ahead-of-the-curve craft beer spot, but has since evolved to include sophisticated dining.

Into that already-strong foundation came the Simms family—third-generation restaurateurs Mike and Chris Simms, grandsons of Arthur J., who opened Simmzy’s in 2009 and Tin Roof Bistro three months later. In 2011 they brought in chef

Plow, with its farm-to-table California comfort food, rounds out a downtown dining scene that now routinely draws people from well outside the South Bay. The flagship of the LeFevre restaurants is MB Post, where the strategy is to order several small plates and share. The bacon cheddar buttermilk biscuits are famous for a good reason: sinfully delicious, oddly comforting. The cocktail program is equally serious. If you find yourself unable to leave, that is normal.

The legendary Navy Grog rum cocktail is still the most requested drink at Rock ‘N Fish’s bar.

David LeFevre as a partner, and the three restaurants they built together—MB Post, Fishing With Dynamite, and The Arthur J. steakhouse—elevated the ambitions of the entire downtown.

Chef David Slay has since added his own mini-empire: Slay Steak + Fish House, Slay Italian Kitchen, and Fête Bistro, his FrenchMediterranean room, all within a few blocks of each other on Manhattan Avenue. Love & Salt brings modern Italian with a California sensibility to the boulevard, and Hook &

If the evening calls for something different—a proper martini in a room that feels like it has been there forever— Mangiamo’s is your answer.

And then there is the matter of closing out Day One the right way.

Almost everything changed in Downtown Manhattan Beach over the last couple of decades. Shellback Tavern abides, as it has for more than 50 years, perched just above the pier. It has become less a local institution and more a bastion of the resistance, a place where you can still find the ramshackle old soul of Manhattan Beach. Owner Bob Beverly quips, “people say that coming into Shellback to get a beer and sit back and look at the pier—it could be the ‘40s, the ‘50s, or the ‘60s, because that view has not changed.” (Another MB merch suggestion: get a Shellback trucker hat). A short walk away, Ercole’s has been the town’s unofficial epicenter since 1927, and features a pool table and perhaps the most locally beloved hamburger (sourced from Manhattan Market, next door). Two burgers for the price of one on Wednesdays.

Bakery by the Yard’s Sherry Yard is the former head pastry chef at Spago and a veteran of the Food Network.

And if the night is still young, there is one more stop. The Kettle has been open since 1973—the first 24-hour restaurant in Manhattan Beach and, as the L.A. Conservancy will tell you, a culturally significant historic site. Arthur J. Simms, who had run the commissary at MGM Studios and operated Ben Frank’s coffee shops on the Sunset Strip, took over in 1975 and started what would become one of the most influential restaurant dynasties in the South Bay: Simmzy’s, Tin Roof Bistro, and Lazy Dog Restaurants all trace their lineage back here, to the corner of Highland and Manhattan Beach Boulevard, where a giant kettle still sits on the roof.

Three generations of Simms family later, everything is still made from scratch, the muffins are still “locally world famous.”

It is open until midnight on weeknights, and around the clock on weekends. NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana was sitting in a Kettle booth when he got the call to join the 49ers, so the least you can do is order a late-night stack.

DAY TWO

On your second day we’ll take a sojourn to the outer realms of MB (if a four-squaremile town can have outer realms). We’ll begin in a legendary part of town, once known as El Porto, now better known as North Manhattan Beach. It’s only about ten blocks that run parallel to the Pacific Ocean along Highland Avenue, but this is a richly storied stretch. Back in the 60s, everything north of Rosecrans was still unincorporated, and it was a wild heyday of sorts. Due to its proximity to LAX, El Porto was home to a lot of airline pilots and in the day, “stewardesses.” Due to its superior waves, it was home to a lot of surfers. And due to the combination thereof, it was a party.

North MB has changed, but its left coast sense of fun is completely intact, and its surf vibe is immaculate. If you are game, let’s go surfing.

He and his instructors will get you into the waves with surprising ease. Don’t worry about looking foolish. Everyone does, until they don’t.

North MB is also, perhaps not coincidentally, a great breakfast neighborhood. Sloopy’s Beach Cafe is like a Californian idyll, with wood tables and (on chilly mornings) a fire pit amid a small forest of plants and streaming sunlight, and, most crucially, a healthy menu that includes breakfast burritos built for a post-surf session. But you have choices.

Across the street is North End Caffe. The Huevos Divorciados—eggs over easy on sausage, bacon, and grilled corn tortillas, half covered in red salsa, half in green— deserve their own moment of silence, but the entire menu is a chef-edged delight.

One more stop before you leave the neighborhood: Bakery by the Yard, opened

by Sherry Yard, the former head pastry chef at Spago and a veteran of the Food Network, operates out of a small storefront on Rosecrans and deserves to be far better known than it is. Look her up before you go; it will recalibrate your expectations for what a neighborhood bakery can be.

North Manhattan and El Porto offer a laid-back, surf-driven slice of the city where the pace slows, and the vibe stays effortlessly chill.

Then rent a Strand Cruiser at Beachside Bikes and ride south. The Strand is the long, flat bike and pedestrian path that runs the entire length of Manhattan Beach’s coastline: 2.1 miles of oceanfront. A morning ride on it, with the ocean to your right and the procession of beach houses to your left, is one of the simple, free pleasures that makes this town what it is. Manhattan Beach maintains a Public Art Story Map (manhattanbeach.gov) that guides visitors to dozens of sculptures, murals, and mosaics scattered throughout the city. The utility boxes alone are worth a look.

Once back on solid ground, head inland to Manhattan Village. This shopping center has transformed itself in recent years from a conventional mall into something genuinely worth a detour: an open outdoor space with water and Adirondack chairs where people congregate and relax and enjoy a cluster of restaurants that has become one of the better dining destinations in the city.

Saint and Second anchors the complex with an indoor-outdoor U-shaped bar— half the seats inside, half out. Sushi Roku is another anchor: upscale without being stuffy, creative omakase alongside solid cooked dishes, the kind of place that works equally well for a business dinner or a proper night out. BOA Steakhouse brings big, modern steakhouse energy to a neighborhood that didn’t previously have it. Tin Roof, a California wine country bistro with a Santa Barbara mission-style interior, has been a Village institution for years. Dan Modern Chinese is the sleeper hit of the whole complex: soup dumplings,

elevated noodle dishes, the kind of place you’d drive to from elsewhere once you knew about it.

Around the corner, it’s well worth a stop on Rosecrans. If you have not yet heard of Erewhon, you will. The organic grocery and prepared food phenomenon—beloved by influencers, or by anyone who has ever tried the smoothies—opened its Manhattan Beach location to lines that started forming at 4am and snaked around the back of the Trader Joe’s parking lot. It is their busiest location. The $18 smoothie is not a rumor and neither is the crowd. They are there for a reason; this is an experience.

As the afternoon softens into evening, the wine country beckons. MB Wine Company is a hidden gem tucked away in the northwest corner of Manhattan Village—a place where you can enjoy flights or bottles, and settle into a room that has both indoor and outdoor seating with occasional live music. Or head down the street, to Barsha Wines and Spirits.

Owners Adnen and Lenora Marouani built a destination wine and artisanal spirits shop on Sepulveda, which also features an array of small plates and salads. Or a little further down the way, on Artesia, if you want something to take back to the hotel room, Manhattan Fine Wines is the kind of place where the staff will learn your palate in a single visit and find you something outstanding at any price point. In that same plaza, The Butchery is worth a stop: a small, beautiful market with a meat counter, seafood counter, deli, and a gourmet food section that one local described as “Erewhon, but for people who actually cook.”

Or if you find yourself back downtown as the sun drops toward the water, Uncorked on Manhattan Avenue is another great wine shop, with a cozy tasting room, a little outdoor patio, warm and knowledgeable staff, and a great selection of wines.

You have options for ending your second night. You could return to where your day started, because North MB has one more card to play, and it is a wild one. Pancho’s, the graceful hacienda-style Mexican restaurant at the corner of Highland and Rosecrans, is worth a visit any night of the week. Their traditional Mexican food is the real thing, the margaritas are legendary, and the restaurant itself is a two-story architectural universe, with full-grown trees growing inside. But if your 48 hours happen to include a Monday night, rearrange your schedule. Monday is comedy night, hosted by comedian Danno Carter, and the secret is this: comedians need stage time to stay sharp, so they show up. Ali Wong has been there. People who go on to do Netflix specials and late-night sets show up at Pancho’s on a Monday to try out new material, in a bar adorned with large mounted taxidermic fish, for free.

Day Two ends where every good day in Manhattan Beach ends—at the beach.

Specifically, at The Strand House, which Michael Zislis opened in 2011 as the crown jewel of his culinary empire. It has the best view of any restaurant in town, a menu that matches its setting, and the good sense to put the ocean and the pier right in front of you while you eat. Order something you’ll remember. Watch the sun go down. You started at the pier two days ago, and now here you are again, right where you belong.

Soccer Town

Manhattan Beach, the World Cup, and AYSO: how a small beach city punches far above its weight in the global game

n a Satu rday morning in the fall or spring, before the bars open downtown and before the Strand fills with bicycles and joggers, soccer has already taken over Manhattan Beach.

The takeover is both ordinary and astonishing. At Marine Avenue Park, Polliwog Park, Manhattan Heights, Mira Costa, and a dozen other fields, children in bright jerseys run in every direction. Parents unfold chairs, carry coffee, look for missing shin guards, and check game schedules on their phones.

Referees arrive. Coaches gather balls. Younger siblings chase each other along the edges of fields. The games begin at 8 a.m. and, on lighted fields, can roll until 8 p.m.

By the time a typical Region 18 AYSO Saturday is fully underway, as many as 5,000 to 7,000 people may be interacting with youth soccer in a city of roughly 35,000 people.

“It’s like running Six Man every weekend,” said Krista Skinner, regional commissioner of AYSO Region 18, referring to the legendarily annual local beach volleyball tournament.

That line, half joke and half logistical truth, speaks to something essential about Manhattan Beach. The city is known for the pier, the beach, good schools, expensive homes, volleyball, surfing, restaurants, and a stubbornly intact small-town feel. But it is also, quietly and emphatically, a soccer town.

This summer, the rest of the soccer world will arrive next door.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup comes to North America in June, and Los Angeles Stadium at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood will host eight matches, including the United States men’s national team opener against Paraguay on June 12. For most of the country, the World Cup is still something seen from a distance, a spectacle on television, a month-long global fever that occasionally breaks through the American sports calendar.

For Manhattan Beach, it is happening almost in the neighborhood. And in another sense, it is a kind of homecoming.

Manhattan Beach has been part of the American soccer story in a way that seems wildly out of scale for a city of its size. The names alone make the point. Mia Hamm lives

here. So has Landon Donovan. Alexi Lalas, the red-bearded defender from the 1994 World Cup, the first American to play in Italy’s Serie A, and now a Fox Sports analyst, calls Manhattan Beach home. Rob Stone, the Fox Sports studio host who will help anchor the network’s World Cup coverage, has lived here for more than a decade. Bruce Arena, the most decorated coach in U.S. men’s national team history, has lived here. So has Omar Gonzalez, the MLS Cup-winning defender. Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion Abby Wambach lives nearby in Hermosa Beach, close enough that her ideal Sunday begins in the waves at El Porto in north Manhattan Beach. Soccer America magazine once described Manhattan Beach as “the epicenter of the American soccer establishment.”

Rob Stone has his own take on that designation, and it involves a dog walk on the Greenbelt. “I was on the wood chip trail a couple years ago,” Stone said. “Zlatan Ibrahimović was having a one-on-one training workout while I’m walking my dog. I mean, things like that don’t happen everywhere.”

The question is why they happen here.

The easy answers are the obvious ones: the weather, the beach, the schools, the airport, the proximity to studios and stadiums and training facilities. But Stone thinks the soccer migration to Manhattan Beach started with the LA Galaxy, whose move to Carson made the South Bay a logical landing place for players, coaches, broadcasters, and executives.

“In the beginning, it was a sweet spot for LA Galaxy players and managers,” Stone said. “And it’s always been kind of a home

for a lot of athletes, whether it’s LA Kings or Olympic athletes or volleyball players. So there’s something about the vibe, the weather, facilities, and just the general demeanor of the city that attracts elite athletes and elite professional people. Soccer certainly was one to jump on board the Manhattan Beach train.”

“I can’t point to one thing,” he said. “I can’t point to just saying it’s the school systems, or it’s the access to the training facilities, or the access to mental and physical improvement.

I just think it’s this complete package of happiness.”

“A lot of athletes can be themselves in Manhattan Beach without being in the spotlight,” Stone said.

That may be the city’s unspoken gift to famous people. It’s a community that tends to keep its cool. It is a place where the royalty of American soccer can buy coffee, walk dogs, coach kids, train in public, and be left alone, save for a smile or knowing nod.

Stone came for reasons that will sound familiar to many Manhattan Beach parents. He and his wife have four children. He wanted the schools, the beach, the lifestyle, and proximity to his work at Fox. All four of his children played AYSO. His two sons also played in travel programs.

But Stone draws a distinction about what Manhattan Beach is and is not as a soccer town. Local kid Ryan Hartley, who is 18 and spent the last six years in the LA Galaxy Academy, earlier this year was signed by Italian Serie A professional club Parma Calcio 1913.

But this doesn’t mean Manhattan Beach has become an established pipeline to elite soccer.

The town is not, by itself, a feeder system to the Galaxy, LAFC, college soccer, or the professional ranks. Southern California as a whole is that feeder system. Manhattan Beach is part of it, and an unusually rich part, but its greatest contribution may be less specialized and more foundational.

“There is the need to go beyond the Manhattan Beach borders if you really want to succeed at that next level,” Stone said. “But

it certainly has proven to be a great starting territory for young people, and also just a home for current and ex-professional athletes.”

That “starting territory” has a name: AYSO Region 18. The American Youth Soccer Organization was founded in Torrance in 1964, which means the South Bay was present at the creation of one of the country’s most influential soccer institutions. Region 18, serving Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, was among the first 20 AYSO regions in the nation. It remains one of the largest.

Skinner said Region 18 usually ranks second or third nationally by registration. Some years, it has been first. After COVID, registration temporarily dropped roughly 10 percent but then rebounded. What struck Skinner was not the drop but the stability.

“For as many people that live in this community, we’re within about one percent in our registration for the past at least 12 years that I’ve been tracking it,” she said. “If you think about everything that has happened to the soccer landscape—clubs coming and going, and other sports, lacrosse, flag football, everything else that has come to compete with the attention span of the kids and the parents—our program and soccer in the community has maintained its footing.”

Between fall and spring seasons, Region 18 serves roughly 3,000 children. In the fall, it fields about 300 teams. It operates with 600 to 800 volunteers, including roughly 400 to 500 coaches and 300 to 400 referees, with some overlap. Its board alone has about 40 volunteers.

To understand the scale, Skinner offers a comparison. One of the larger local club soccer organizations in the South Bay may have around 50 teams. Region 18 has about six times that.

Skinner said AYSO’s success has a lot to do with the cities it relies upon. “I will tip my hat and give a ton of credit to the commitment that the City of Manhattan Beach, and then secondarily Hermosa Beach, have made to supporting a nonprofit, volunteer, 100 percent volunteer-based organization,” she said. “Our access to fields and field space is what allows us to do the job that we do. If we were having to battle for field space and to pay what our competitors in the club scene have to pay, I don’t know that we would be as successful.”

In a town where space is among the most precious commodities, access to fields is not a small thing. It is the infrastructure beneath the culture.

The other key is volunteerism. Region 18 is not a business. It is a 501(c)(3), built largely on the willingness of parents and longtime community members to give their time.

“There are a lot of people that are willing to just write a check,” she said. “But for everybody that’s willing to write a check, there’s another handful of kids that lose the opportunity to play because they lose the field space.”

The price ref lects the philosophy.

Registration for the youngest players, the U5 division, is $145.

“Tell me anything you can do in the South Bay for more than one week for under $150,” Skinner said.

The region could charge more. In Manhattan Beach, most families would willingly pay more. But the children whose families would not be able to pay are precisely the reason the cost stays low.

“We could absolutely, in this community, raise that to $500 tomorrow, and most of the kids would play,” she said. “But the ones that wouldn’t are the reason why we’re at $145.

We want every kid, every family, to have an opportunity to play, regardless of where they come from and regardless of their financial constraints.”

AYSO’s founding ideals—open registration, balanced teams, positive coaching, everyone plays—can sound almost quaint in an era when youth sports have become increasingly

professionalized, specialized, and expensive.

But in Region 18, those ideals are not nostalgic.

They are operational.

About 85 percent of Region 18 players come from Manhattan Beach or Hermosa Beach, or attend school in one of the two cities. But unlike Little League, Skinner said, AYSO is open registration. A family can register their child in whichever AYSO region works for them—based on where the parents work, where grandparents live, where a sibling already plays, or simply which region has a program the family prefers. Some come from Los Angeles because they like the program.

At the youngest level, Skinner said, the goal is not to manufacture future college players.

“We’re not trying to teach four-year-olds how to play soccer,” she said. “We’re trying to teach them how to make friends, and to build a community, and be on a team, and

be supported by their parents. We’re not developing D1 soccer players. We have a couple along the way, but that’s not our main goal.”

Soccer here matters beyond the soccer.

Region 18 is not simply producing athletes.

It is building relationships.

Because AYSO redrafts teams each season, children do not play with the same small group year after year. A child who begins in pre-K and stays through middle school may play with dozens of kids from different neighborhoods and elementary schools. By the time those children arrive at Manhattan Beach Middle School or Mira Costa, many already know each other. Their parents know each other. Their family lives have overlapped along the sidelines.

“If you have a kid that’s grown up in our program from pre-K through middle school, hopefully, if they’ve played every season with

SOCCER TOWN us, they’ve been with us for eight to 10 seasons,” Skinner said. “By the time they hit middle school, they have now interacted with dozens of kids across the different elementary schools.”

That is how a community is knit together.

A Saturday game. A snack. A team photo. A borrowed pair of cleats. A parent volunteering to coach because no one else can. A child meeting a future classmate three years before they share a classroom.

“I think one of the biggest challenges for our kids these days is just knowing people and having those interpersonal relationships,” Skinner said. “That’s one of the things that we do really well, is give your kids the opportunity to make friends.”

The rise of club soccer has complicated this landscape. Neither Skinner nor AYSO is anti-club. Her own daughter played club soccer for years. A lot of kids love their club teams, find their best friends there, and thrive.

But Skinner worries about what happens when sports become a chase—for status, roster spots, scholarships, prestige, or simply parental validation.

“I believe that being a multi-sport athlete is really, really important,” she said. “If you can continue to have your child do different activities throughout their entire growth years, I think that is much more important than excelling in one.”

She has seen families spend thousands of dollars a year chasing a level of play. She has seen children lose their love of the game.

“I see these kids that are driven down this path, literally by their parents,” Skinner said.

“It’s sad for me, because they lose their love for the game. Kids that play AYSO, they love to play soccer. It’s fun. They want to hang out with their friends. We have some amazing players, but they’re not killing themselves every week, staying up late to do homework and traveling and being gone.”

Her own family story carries the ache of that experience. Skinner’s younger daughter played club soccer for five years, then played her final season at Mira Costa. After that, she stopped playing.

“She lost her love of the game,” Skinner said.

“When she went away to college, she played her last game at Mira Costa as a senior and hasn’t touched a soccer ball since. And that’s sad.”

But this summer, her daughter is moving back home. She plans to coach in Region 18 through a new partnership with the Women’s Coaching Alliance, a program aimed at putting young women into leadership opportunities as coaches. She also hopes to volunteer with Football for Her, a Gardenabased organization that provides low-cost or no-cost soccer programming for girls in underserved communities.

“She’s going to find her love of the sport again,” Skinner said. The Women’s Coaching Alliance partnership is especially meaningful to Skinner because it touches the reason she became regional commissioner in the first place.

Skinner grew up playing soccer on the East Coast beginning at age four. There was no AYSO in her community, just Saturday soccer—blue on one side, yellow on the other— and she kept playing through high school. In those years, before women’s soccer had the structure and visibility it has today, there was not much of a path after high school. But she became a youth referee. She became a coach.

When her own children reached AYSO age, she thought she would coach for a couple of years and then step aside.

Twenty years later, she is still here.

Skinner stepped into the Regional Commissioner role eight years ago. At the time, she was one of a handful of female coaches and one of a handful of female referees in a region where the leadership skewed heavily male. Today, the board is roughly half women.

“So I actually closed my business and I signed up to become the regional commissioner,” she said. “And I have not been able to get rid of this job in eight years...It is a passion project.

I do it because I know what the sport gave me growing up. This sport saved my life back then.

I had a coach that changed my life.”

What began as coaching four-year-olds became something larger: an attempt to preserve a version of sport that gives children belonging, confidence, friendship, discipline, and joy—without taking childhood away from them.

“We have kids that come back to us from club,” Skinner said. “A lot come back in that 14- to 16-year-old age range where they’re like, ‘I just want to play the game that I love with my friends.’ And AYSO lets me do that.”

That does not mean Region 18 is casual or unserious. Its All-Star teams have been highly successful. Its postseason teams have won at the Western States level. A banner at Marine Avenue Park lists the championships. Skinner puts it this way: winning is not the goal, but it is nice to win.

“There is a track to be extraordinarily successful through higher-level play within the AYSO umbrella,” she said.

The broader arc, however, is not championships. It is continuity. Region 18 has been doing this for more than 50 years.

The American game has grown up around it.

That is what Rob Stone sees most clearly as the World Cup returns to the United States.

Stone has covered 15 World Cups overall, including seven men’s tournaments. But before he became one of the country’s most recognizable soccer broadcasters, he went to the 1994 World Cup as a fan. He took his now-wife to a match in Orlando while working as a young local sports anchor in Albany, Georgia.

“I was the young buck sports anchor who was thrusting World Cup highlights on an unsuspecting southwest Georgia market who had no idea what was coming their way,” Stone said. “I was talking passionately about Bulgaria and what this U.S. national team can do. Here come the Germans and the Brazilians, and poor little southwest Georgia Albany had no idea what was coming their way. But I did my best to educate them.”

In 1994, American soccer was kind of like the metric system. Americans weren’t quite sure what to make of it. Major League Soccer had not yet begun play. The U.S. women would not win their iconic 1999 World Cup at the Rose Bowl for another five years. Soccer culture had not yet taken root in the United States.

“Back in ’94, if you were a parent and you had to coach your kid, you had to go to the library and check out a soccer book to learn what exactly is going on,” Stone said.

That is no longer the country the World Cup will find upon arrival this summer. In 2026, it’s game on.

“I could just point my finger and spin around here in Manhattan Beach and point at hundreds of parents who grew up playing the game and could coach on a moment’s

notice,” Stone said. “So I think the world is going to come to LA and America overall and see a totally changed soccer culture and walk away really impressed.”

He called it a “mature soccer society”—a country with more intelligence, passion, and knowledge than it had three decades ago.

“Frankly, it’s in more and more Americans’ DNA than it was in ’94,” Stone said.

If that is true nationally, it is especially visible in Manhattan Beach. Stone sees the city as a “starter garden” for the sport—a pocket of Southern California where climate, culture, immigration, athleticism, and openness to new sports combined early.

“I think that’s one of the perks of being associated with one of the largest and greatest cities in the world,” he said. “You have this cultural melting pot, and you are going to attract intelligent, athletic human beings that are not shy about embracing quote-unquote new sports, which soccer was back in the early ’90s. I think it’s natural that this town, this pocket, was a bit of a starter garden for soccer in this state and in this country.”

The World Cup, in other words, will not make Manhattan Beach into a soccer town. It already was one. Skinner affirms this. Every four years, she said, AYSO national leaders talk about the World Cup or Olympics as moments that might boost registration. In Region 18, the effect is more like a brief increase in awareness than a wave of new players.

“It’s such an entry-level sport in this community,” she said. “It’s what everybody

thinks about when they’re signing up for one of their first sports.”

The youngest children may learn the names of more international stars. They may collect stickers, watch games on television, or understand for the first time that the sport they play on Saturdays is the same game that can fill stadiums and stop nations. But they were probably going to play anyway.

“It doesn’t all of a sudden introduce a sport to a community that’s never heard of it,” Skinner said. What it will do is bring the world to the city’s doorstep. Stone said many of those travelers will find their way to Manhattan Beach.

“It’s a city that thousands will be flocking to this summer, with the World Cup being played not too far away at SoFi, and the reputation this town has, and proximity to the airport, and obviously the beach,” Stone said. “I think you’re going to see a lot of a lot of flags. You’re going to hear a little bit more volume when that tournament starts on June 11.”

“I think Manhattan Beach, and even Hermosa Beach to an extent, are going to be a bit of an epicenter for the World Cup here in LA,” Stone said. “Whether they’re here for their nation and the games that are being played, or whether they’re just coming to LA as part of their American World Cup adventure, I think everybody knows that this is a smart, safe, enjoyable, and easy place to come to.”

He imagined visitors walking the Strand, going to the beach, visiting the pier, and watching games in bars and restaurants that will play them nonstop.

“I think it’s going to be really obvious come

early June that Manhattan Beach is an absolute destination for anybody coming to LA for the World Cup,” Stone said.

For Stone, the return of the tournament to the United States carries personal symmetry.

He covered the 1999 Women’s World Cup, which brought him to the Rose Bowl but not to Manhattan Beach.

“I was too young and dumb to know to come down here at that point in my life,” he said. “But now I know better.”

Now the tournament is coming to him—to a stadium minutes from the city where he raised soccer-playing children, where he walked past Zlatan on the wood chip trail, where the American game’s old and new guard have found a home.

And when it is over, when the flags come down and the visitors leave and the world turns its attention elsewhere, Manhattan Beach soccer will return to its workaday form. The fields will be lined. Coaches will send reminders. Referees will be recruited.

Children will arrive dragging gear bags, water bottles tucked under their arms, parents trailing behind. A few may someday play in college or beyond. Most will not. But they will have played.

They will have known the feeling of belonging to a team. They will have known children from other schools. They will have known the game not as spectacle, but as a Saturday morning habit, a community language, a way of growing up.

The World Cup is coming to soccer town.

But soccer town was here all along.

I

f you were to scoop up a random person from the middle of the continent and drop them down in the middle of Manhattan Beach, he or she would likely stand in utter amazement at what they beheld.

At every corner, they’d see unusually vibrant people—the tousle-haired surfer going for a smoothie, the lean-muscled yogi laughing with her kids, the spry octogenarian out walking the dog. Even the more workaday business folk, though not exactly athletic, are moving with a certain special pep in their steps, exuding a kind of just-happy-to-be-here glow. And if our traveler thought, “These are the healthiest people I’ve ever seen,” it would not be an exaggeration. It would be factually correct.

The Gallup Well-Being Index earlier this year found Manhattan Beach to be not only the healthiest community in the United States, but

the healthiest community recorded in the twodecade history of the survey. Manhattan Beach scored 71.6—the highest measurement ever recorded out of more than 1,500 communities surveyed since 2008—against a national average of 60.1. Almost all of the community’s health metrics were shown to be improving against a national backdrop that has been worsening.

“All those boats are lifting,” Gallup research director Dan Witters said while presenting the data, “while the tide’s going down.”

But what the numbers don’t tell you is that Manhattan Beach didn’t become the healthiest community in America by accident, or simply by being wealthy. “More affluent communities are not more likely to improve over time than other communities,” Witters said. “To improve over time, you have to do something to move the needle.”

Something has been happening here for a long time—something that predates the optimization movement, the DNA methylation tests, and the concierge physicians on call. It has its roots in beach culture and a walkable downtown and neighbors who know each other. The wellness revolution has arrived in full force in Manhattan Beach, but it landed in soil that was already prepared. That revolution is visible in the remarkable concentration of cutting-edge health and wellness practitioners who have made the South Bay their home and practice. They are not here by coincidence.

They are here because the community they found was ready for them—and because they, in turn, are drawn to a place where what they believe about health is already at least partly embedded in how people live.

No one locally has embodied this holistic yet evidence-based approach to health longer than Dr. Chong Kim, who has been practicing anti-aging, functional, and concierge medicine out of his Torrance office since 2007—nearly two decades, and well before any of it had a trendy name. He came to it the way many practitioners do: through disillusionment with what conventional medicine could accomplish.

He trained as a hospitalist, an in-patient physician, and spent his days watching people arrive already broken.

“True medicine starts in prevention,” he came to believe. “Once you develop an illness, what you’re really doing is patching up a broken

tire.” He built a different kind of practice—one where he sits with patients long enough to know them—before the industry invented the word “concierge” to describe it. He has lived in Manhattan Beach’s Tree Section since 2010, and his patients, he says, keep him honest. “The South Bay population is just more informed about health in general,” he says with a laugh.

“They come to my office with questions that sometimes make me go, ‘Wow, where did you learn that?’ It’s a competition sometimes.”

His practice now spans bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, NAD+ infusions, advanced cancer screening, VO2 max testing, and genetic age assessment—a toolkit that would have seemed like science fiction when he started. The conversation around hormones, particularly for perimenopausal women, has been one of the most significant shifts he’s witnessed. For years, a major study scared women away from hormone replacement entirely. The research has since turned decisively.

Bioidentical hormones, molecularly identical to the body’s own, are now understood to lower the risk of dementia, osteoporosis, and heart disease. “Women feel fantastic when they start back on their hormones,” Kim says. Men, he

Sollis Health, a membership-based concierge medicine company operates as a private urgent-and-emergency care provider. adds, often don’t realize how depleted their testosterone levels have become until the numbers come back. “Once you give them some replacement, they feel like they’re in their 30s again. That’s the satisfaction as a physician—patients come in the next visit and say, ‘I feel great. What else can we do?’”

Dr. Mike Tarnay spent 25 years in hospital emergency rooms—his first 17 at Torrance Memorial, then eight at Providence Little Company of Mary—watching the American healthcare system buckle under its own weight.

Patient volumes at Torrance Memorial nearly doubled after nearby hospitals closed in the early 2000s, turning what had once been a manageable ER into a 12-hour chaos machine.

“It’s a young man’s sport,” he says of emergency medicine at that scale. “I was getting into my late 50s and figured I’d better find another way.”

He didn’t have to look far. Sollis Health, a membership-based concierge medicine company that operates as a private urgentand-emergency care provider, recruited him to run their new South Bay location at 1000 N.

Sepulveda, five minutes from the 32nd Street house where he has lived since 1998. He still works one shift a month in a conventional ER. The contrast sharpens his gratitude every time.

“In the ER, I’m running around, ordering lab tests, making sure people aren’t having emergencies, and I’ve got to run out because there are 40 people in my lobby with an eighthour wait.” At Sollis, he sits down. He reviews labs with members, talks through what they mean, coordinates with specialists who return calls. He calls it “career-extending and careersatisfying.” His patients are his neighbors.

What Sollis represents, Tarnay believes, is where all American medicine is heading: a model where people invest something out of pocket for a doctor who knows them. A good primary care physician, he says, is like a good general contractor: “They know you, they know the sub-specialists—the roofer, the plumber, the electrician—and they coordinate everything.” That relationship has been hollowed out by large health systems where doctors chase metrics and patients chase appointments. The

South Bay, he notes, has been slower to adopt concierge medicine than Beverly Hills or the Westside—a reflection, perhaps, of its more laidback character. But it’s coming. “It just takes a couple of interactions with the system,” he says, “and you realize you need something different.”

A few floors up in the same building on Sepulveda, Dr. Vivek Gupta runs a different kind of practice. Board-certified in both internal medicine and obesity medicine, with additional certifications in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Unified Mindfulness, Gupta founded Mindful Wellness in 2020 around a conviction that most medicine was treating the wrong thing.

“I start from a fundamentally evolutionary approach,” he says. Human bodies evolved to aggressively seek and store calories against scarcity—and for hundreds of thousands of years, that was the right strategy. Then, roughly 70 years ago, the food environment changed in ways those bodies were never designed to handle. “The two fundamental things that have changed the experience of being a human,” Gupta says, “are our food and our phones.”

The result is that seven out of ten people now struggle with weight—not because of moral failure, but because our inherited physiology collided with an unprecedented environment.

“We’ve tried the willpower narrative for 50 years,” he says, “and it doesn’t work.”

Gupta uses GLP-1 medications, the class that includes Ozempic and Wegovy, not as solutions but as tools. “They turn down the noise,” he says, reducing hunger and craving enough that patients can do the harder, more durable work of behavior change: sleep, stress, nutrition, physical activity. His patient base in the South Bay, he notes, skews toward highfunctioning people in their 40s and 50s whose bodies are changing—people whose lives are busy and demanding, not in spite of their success, but because of it. The community fabric here, he believes, is itself a health asset.

“The South Bay is definitely a community,” he says, “as opposed to maybe other parts of LA.” He sees it in his patients. People who move here for the schools stay for the block. Belonging, it turns out, is good medicine.

Maricel Rocha came to Manhattan Beach from a different direction entirely—literally and figuratively. Born in Argentina, she earned

THE CUTTING EDGE a master’s degree in biotechnology from the University of São Paulo and spent years in cancer research in Philadelphia before leaving academia with a conviction that the science she was practicing couldn’t answer the question she cared about. A tumor, she had come to believe, is a consequence of something that happened first at the spiritual, mental, and emotional level. The mouse models couldn’t capture that. She left in search of a better way to help people.

Two decades later, she runs a health coaching practice in Manhattan Beach built around epigenetic testing—DNA methylation analysis that measures biological age as distinct from chronological age. The technology became publicly available around 2022 and can measure how fast a person is aging at the cellular level, track the impact of lifestyle changes in real time, and illuminate a path to what Rocha calls age reversal. “We’re not guessing anymore,” she says. That phrase represents twenty years of waiting for the tools to catch up to the question.

Underlying her work is a distinction she returns to often: the difference between lifespan and healthspan. Modern medicine has become remarkably good at keeping people alive. What Rocha is chasing is something different—not more years, but more life in the years. “We’ve done a good job in modern society extending our lifespans,” she says. “We’ve not done a good

job expanding our healthspans.” Her goal, for herself and every client, is to match the two.

Rocha is 55 years old chronologically.

Biologically, she says, she is 45—and the gap is growing. Her pace of aging, measured consistently over four years of testing, runs at roughly 0.75: she ages about nine months for every calendar year. In one striking test cycle, four months of purely mindset work—a program focused on stopping self-sabotage—cut her projected disease risk nearly in half. “When you combine data and you stop the self-sabotage,” she says, “that’s when results show up.”

She prescribes connection and joy the way she prescribes nutrition: as a measurable intervention. Schedule time for things that create joy. Make space for people. “Connection and joy,” she says, “are among my seven pillars of age reversal.”

But she is also, after all these years, still simply a resident who loves where she lives. “We have the beach, we have the people, we have the weather,” she says. “There’s no excuse for us not to go out, meet people and enjoy what is being served to us.” It is a matter, Rocha says, of savoring the ample but simple pleasures so abundant in Manhattan Beach—such as the sun setting over the pier. “I haven’t seen any other sunset that is more beautiful. It’s in our backyard.”

of professionals,” she says. “It’s not a lack of information. It’s not lack of resources. It’s self-sabotage. It’s mindset work.”

Just across the El Segundo border on PCH, Love.Life—co-founded by John Mackey, the visionary behind Whole Foods Market, along with former Whole Foods executives Walter Robb and Betsy Foster—represents the most ambitious expression of the new wellness model yet built in the South Bay. Opened in August 2024 in a 45,000-square-foot space, it offers functional medicine, Eastern medicine, behavioral health, physical therapy, registered dietitians, fitness, recovery therapies, indoor pickleball, and a plants-forward café—all under one roof, all coordinated around a single member’s care plan.

The tagline—imagine if your doctor, nutritionist, trainer, therapist, and acupuncturist all teamed up to plan your care—is not marketing language.

It’s the literal structure.

Meaghan Driscoll, Love.Life’s Director of Sales and Marketing, has lived in Manhattan Beach for 17 years. She came to the job, she says, because it felt like a natural extension of the community she already loved. She’s quick to distinguish what Love.Life is from what people assume it is. “There’s everything we have in this building that someone else is doing somewhere,” she says. “But we’re doing it all under one roof and truly taking the holistic approach.” The difference, she adds, is coordination—a care team that talks to each other about you, rather than specialists operating in separate silos with no shared picture of the whole person.

But what Driscoll most wants to talk about is the pickleball. And the WhatsApp group.

And the accountability coach who follows

up when members stop showing up. “One of the pillars of longevity is community,” she says, “and that’s the approach we’re taking.” Members who met on the courts are introducing their significant others. People who played Monday are taking class together Wednesday. The social infrastructure—the café open to the public, the events and lectures, the gather room where outside experts come to speak—is not incidental to the wellness mission. It is the wellness mission. “The gym model is pay money and don’t come,” she says. “We want you to come. We want you to want to be here.”

Love.Life, she says, is basically a Blue Zone.

That observation points toward something larger—the thing that all these practitioners, arriving from different disciplines and different directions, keep independently naming as the variable that underlies everything else.

Vivek Gupta gets there through Blue Zones research: the common denominator among the world’s longest-lived people, he emphasizes, is not a specific diet or exercise protocol.

It’s community. Maricel Rocha gets there through advancing science and her seven pillars, foremost of which is finding joy in human connection. Mike Tarnay gets there through what makes his work feel deeper and more meaningful now that his patients are his neighbors.

“When you study Blue Zones people, the ones who live forever—the thing is, they eat a lot of different things, but their common variable is community,” Gupta said. “We’re social creatures.

Humans have been able to conquer the globe not because we’re stronger or necessarily smarter, but because we can communicate together. And we have each other.”

“The whole thing about the Blue Zones,” Kim says, “is that is where all the wellness is—community is a huge part of how we age and how we prevent illness. It’s all about the community that you live in and the support that’s there for you.”

National Geographic explorer Dan Buettner has spent his career identifying and studying the world’s Blue Zones—the handful of places on earth, from Sardinia to Okinawa to the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, where people routinely live past 100 in good health, without trying to. They don’t go to gyms and they don’t diet. His research identified the common threads: natural movement built into daily life, a plant-forward diet, a sense of purpose, and above all, community.

In 2010, he launched the first Blue Zones Project in the United States right here in the Beach Cities, in part, because the soil was already fertile. The Strand, the walkable neighborhoods, the culture of physical activity, the unusually intact sense of community—Manhattan Beach had ingredients that most American cities had already lost. What followed, Buettner says, were permanent and semi-permanent changes to the built environment—bike paths, smoke-free policies, walking school buses, restaurants committed to healthier menus— modest interventions, each one, but with a long tail of lasting impact. “The moral of the tale,” he says, “is that incremental change is big change.”

His work reinforced what was already here, and almost certainly contributed something to the remarkable Gallup numbers that followed.

It has also quietly shaped the thinking of the cutting-edge practitioners now working in and around the community.

Buettner puts it this way: he recently spent a week in Vestland, Scandinavia, one of the regions with the highest healthspans he has ever measured. Every dinner party he attended ended the same way—someone would move to the piano, and everyone would sing together.

No one organized it. No one measured the outcome. “As natural as dessert arriving,” he says.

That, he suggests, is what genuine well-being looks like. Not a protocol. A life. Buettner likes to invoke W. Clement Stone on the subject: “Be careful the environment you choose, for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose, for you will become like them.”

Manhattan Beach is not Vestland. It has Erewhon, a grocery store named after an 1870s satirical novel about a land in which ill-health is a crime, and concierge ERs and epigenetics coaches. But underneath the optimization economy, there is something older and more durable—a Strand that connects people, streets that invite walking, and foremost a community that has somehow held together through decades of change and growth and the arrival of all manner of modernity.

That, in the end, may be Manhattan Beach’s most underappreciated asset and its most transferable lesson. You can measure it in Gallup scores and biomarkers and biological age. But you can also just feel it, the moment you arrive.

And then there is Martyrs Hill—the area around 15th, 17th, and 18th streets near American Martyrs Catholic church and school—which has commanded Hill Section pricing in recent years, with larger lots and, in some cases, ocean views. “Those are going for a premium right now,” Caskey said. “Highly desirable for the walkability, potential ocean views, and proximity to town and the beach.” The Martyrs neighborhood draws its own distinct constituency: families whose children attend the school, who want to be within walking distance of it, and who find in the surrounding streets an older, more established version of the Manhattan Beach community feel.

orth Manhattan Beach, also known as El Porto by some longstanding locals, doesn’t have a clearly marked beginning but its northern boundary is where Highland Avenue becomes Vista Del Mar. Technically, it’s also part of the Sand Section—in fact, Sand Dune Park, the last remaining fully intact sand dune, borders North MB and the Tree Section. But North MB is very much its own neighborhood.

Caskey draws the line around Marine Avenue and 36th Street, where the walk streets—pitched rather than flat, but with views that reward the incline—begin in earnest. The neighborhood also features several cul-de-sacs, tucked off the main grid, that have a quiet, almost hidden quality.

“The North End has developed so well,” she said. “There’s great shopping, great restaurants, and some charming cul-de-sacs that people love.”

The northernmost part of North MB was unincorporated until 1981 and had a Wild West kind of feel, surfer-bohemian style, resulting in a California Dreamin’ heyday back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s. That era is long gone but the sense of celebration remains, reinvented as a different kind of golden California dream. “It doesn’t have that bohemian feel anymore,” Hobin Williams said. “With the new construction

What remains is something different but no less appealing: the best surf break in Manhattan Beach, a few blocks along Highland that feature some great little restaurants, yoga and fitness studios, a few shops, and a neighborhood vibe built around raising families—the parties these days are more likely to be neighborhood block parties featuring bounce houses and BBQs, or community gatherings such as the neighborhood’s signature event, the North MB Holiday Stroll.

Nina Tarnay, a council member and 32nd Street resident who has raised her family here, describes it as a small town within a small town. “Grand View Elementary is such a hub for young families—it’s where you bond with your neighbors and your kids bond with their friends,” she said. “We know all of our neighbors. There is a lot of walkability. People still walk, and especially if you have a dog, you’re basically out and about all the time, meeting and seeing everyone.” The neighborhood’s smaller, locally-owned businesses help preserve that insulated quality even during peak beach season. “Even in the peak times, we are still pretty insulated,” Tarnay said. “If I want the hustle and bustle, I can bike or walk to downtown. But if I don’t want that, and I just kind of want to have an easy stroll down

to dinner, I can do that and be back home without getting into a car.”

The neighborhood has also developed a sense of stability—people putting down roots and staying—which is something Tarnay sees as one of North MB’s defining traits.

“We don‘t have a ton of turnover, because it is such a neighborhood,” she said. “People

end up raising their kids there, and you really see generations of residents…you get to see each other’s kids grow up.” The neighborhood is so idyllic it even features its own little patch of woods in Sand Dune Park.

“Part of my workout is walking the stairs at Sand Dune Park. It transports you,” Tarnay said. “How lucky are we to have a small little

woods in the middle of our town?”

The north end also has a practical advantage the rest of Manhattan Beach can’t quite match—it’s a quick drive to LAX and an easy launching point for commuters heading north. “It’s easy out in the morning,” Hobin Williams noted. “Quick access to get out of town.”

EDUCATION IN MANHAT TAN BEACH On a Tuesday morning in October, the sidewalks around Grand View Elementary fill with families on foot—kids in backpacks, parents with coffee, dogs on leashes. A few bikes lock up near the entrance. No one is in a particular hurry. It’s a school morning in Manhattan Beach, which means it also looks a little like a neighborhood party.

ennifer Cram and her family moved to Manhattan Beach from the Midwest about twenty years ago. “We came here for the beach,” she said, “and we stayed for the schools.” She has since had children at every level of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District—elementary, middle, and high school—and has spent those years volunteering in classrooms, serving as a PTA president at Grand View, and now serving on the board of the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation. She is not unusual. In Manhattan Beach, that level of engagement is closer to the norm.

“We all have the same goal,” Cram said.

“We all moved here for the same reasons, wanting to be here for our kids. There’s no one here who’s not here for the same reason —and together we’re building the same structure for our kids.”

What she’s describing is more than a school system. It’s a civic undertaking.

Amy Howorth made a similar calculation when she moved here in 1997, arriving from Northern California with two small children.

Her realtor had first taken her to Pacific Palisades, and she’d cried—no sidewalks to walk on, no feeling of community. The following weekend she flew back down and took a walk to the beach in Manhattan Beach. “I felt at home instantly,” she said. She was elected to the MBUSD school board six years later and now serves on the Manhattan Beach City Council.

“I moved here because of the school district,” Howorth said. “I moved here because I wanted to live in a town with one high school, because that fosters a real sense of community. I wanted my kids to play on the sports teams with the kids they’d be going to school with. And the people who keep moving here—they could live in Hermosa Beach or, you know, fabulous other places.

And yes, the beach is a draw, but it’s the schools that keep people coming here.”

The note that Howorth sounds—that this is not a recent development—matters.

The schools have been the central magnet for nearly thirty years, and probably longer.

What has changed is the intensity of the investment, not the fact of it.

A DISTRICT IN RARE COMPANY The numbers are striking on their own.

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District serves approximately 6,500 students across eight campuses—Manhattan Beach Preschool, five elementary schools, Manhattan Beach Middle School, and Mira Costa High School. On the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, the state’s primary standardized measure, MBUSD ranks fifth in English Language Arts and sixth in math among all unified school districts in California. There are roughly 1,000 such districts in the state.

What makes those rankings more striking still is context. Every district ranked above MBUSD is considerably smaller. As Jonathan Erickson, the district’s Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, put it when presenting the data to the school board last fall: “It is really amazing that a district our size is still competing with them.

We’re knocking on the door of some of these other districts that have been at the top for a very long time.”

The trajectory matters as much as the ranking. Scores have climbed steadily back to and beyond pre-pandemic levels, with particular momentum at Mira Costa High School, where more than 81 percent of eleventh graders met or exceeded English Language Arts standards—a category that typically declines at the high school level statewide. Math scores rose nearly 8 percent in a single year. Science scores jumped more than 13 percent.

The AP story is equally telling. Last year, 1,357 Mira Costa students were enrolled in Advanced Placement courses, up from 1,107 four years earlier. Of those who took AP exams, 90 percent scored a 3 or above— the threshold for potential college credit—an increase of 13 percent over four years. In one particularly striking example, more than 200 students took the AP Precalculus exam after completing the district’s Honors Precalculus course, which had been designed to meet AP rigor without the AP label. Ninety-eight percent passed.

pressure. MBUSD caps student enrollment in AP courses at four—a policy rooted in the board’s sustained attention to student wellbeing. Jen Dohner, vice president of the MBUSD Board of Trustees and the parent of two Mira Costa graduates, sees the cap as reflecting something the district has learned over years of watching what actually works for kids.

“Students perform so much better academically when they are also engaged by a passion,” Dohner said. “That passion track is what keeps them going, keeps them attending, keeps them dedicated.

Your passion might be drama, or it might be a sport, or something else entirely. But whatever it is, you need to stay current with all of your academics to stay in pursuit of your passion.”

The message in that approach is worth pausing on: this is a district that could push harder on the metrics and has chosen not to.

THE SIZE THAT WORKS One reason MBUSD can sustain both achievement and balance is the district’s size.

It is small—roughly one one-hundredth the size of Los Angeles Unified, as Dohner notes—but it is also large enough to have achieved critical mass in the diversity of programs it can offer.

“We’re small,” Dohner said. “Everybody knows everybody, multiple ways over— you’re in my this group and my that group.

We’re just very tight-knit.”

The single-high-school model matters here. Manhattan Beach is large enough to support a comprehensive high school with serious depth in academics, athletics, and the arts, but small enough that the community converges around that one school. High school students don’t scatter across rival campuses; they sit in the same classrooms, play on the same teams, and perform in the same productions. When they come back— as graduates, as teachers, as parents enrolling their own children—they come back to a place they actually remember.

That scale translates into programs that would be remarkable in a district ten times larger. Mira Costa was named a California Exemplary Arts Award school this year by the California Department of Education. Its music department has Grammy recognition.

Its theater program is among the premier community programs for theater education in the nation. Its Model United Nations program is the most decorated program of its kind in the United States. Roughly 63 percent of Mira Costa students play a sport, and its teams regularly win league titles and reach the CIF playoffs; the boys’ volleyball has been ranked number one nationally.

“You don’t get to the award-winning level at the high school without these kids having done the work all the way along,” Dohner said.

“You have Makerspace in elementary school, then science lab, then STEAM Wheel at the middle school, and then these technology, biotechnology, and engineering programs at the high school. The pathways are fully articulated.”

The effect, Dohner said, is that almost every student finds something. “You have kids who are in Model United Nations and on cross-country and in jazz band— they’re in multiple of these award-winning programs, which is just wild.”

It’s not, of course, simply a matter of great programs. Whether it’s a first grader giving a speech on environmental

stewardship at a city tree-planting ceremony, a middle school scholar quiz team answering trivia questions that leave adult volunteers lost, a volleyball player jumping out of the gym or a high school jazz ensemble performing at an exquisitely beautiful level— visit any campus, and the chief amazement that you encounter will be the kids themselves. Outgoing superintendent John Bowes, who is retiring this year, spent four decades in education before coming to Manhattan Beach—as a teacher, principal, and administrator in four California districts.

He has been in thousands of classrooms.

When he stood before the district’s assembled Teachers of the Year at a school board meeting last spring, what he said carried some weight.

“I’ve had the good fortune to work for four really great districts,” Bowes said. “I’ve seen a lot of great teachers. But I can honestly say without hesitation that the best teaching I have seen in 35 years has been over the last four years here in Manhattan Beach Unified.”

EDUCATION IN MANHATTAN BEACH named Spike lives under a heat lamp on the science lab shelf and students run experiments with UV-reactive beads. They don’t describe Megan Montz at Robinson Elementary, whose second graders greeted her recognition as Teacher of the Year with a bouquet of flowers nearly as big as the child carrying it. They don’t describe the Meadows special education teacher who arrives in sequins and a magician’s cape because, as a colleague put it, she’ll do whatever it takes to get kids’ attention and keep it. Or the Pennekamp third-grade teacher whose own second-grade teacher—the woman who inspired her to enter the profession— showed up unannounced at the school board meeting where she was honored, decades later, to watch her former student receive recognition as Teacher of the Year.

No data points can quite measure the real magic that occurs in classrooms across the district.

The district’s Teacher of the Year for 202425, Mira Costa’s Maddie Hutchinson, teaches English and drama in the same classroom where she once sat as a sophomore. She graduated from Mira Costa, left for San Francisco State, spent a few years figuring out her direction, and eventually asked herself a question a close friend posed: what kind of legacy do you want to leave? The answer led her back to Manhattan Beach.

“I remembered the adults who saw and validated me during my own adolescence,” Hutchinson said, “and I thought, ‘Yeah, that meant a lot to me. I could do that for others.’”

Now she works alongside the teachers who inspired her to enter the profession in the first place—Jonathan Westerberg, who taught her English and drama as a sophomore and junior; Shannon Vaughan, her freshman English teacher; Hien Nguyen, her AVID teacher; Jim Amberg, who taught her first drama classes at Pacific Elementary and later at the middle school.

“I never planned on returning to the South Bay, let alone teaching at my alma mater,” Hutchinson said. “I am so thankful that the journey turned out that way.” She now teaches sophomore English in the same room where she took sophomore English herself.

She is not an anomaly. MBUSD alumni returning to teach in the district that shaped them is a recurring pattern—a reflection of what happens when a school system earns genuine loyalty from the students who passed through it.

A COMMUNITY THAT INVESTS For more than four decades, the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation has been the community’s primary nonprofit partner in public education. Founded in 1983, MBEF has steadily increased its contributions as needs have grown, this year contributing a record $7.6 million in grants across the district—music, STEAM, library services, counseling, and the teaching positions that keep class sizes manageable.

But the financial numbers only tell part of the story. What MBEF really represents, Cram said, is the reason Manhattan Beach schools feel different from schools elsewhere—the reason a public school system can deliver what looks and feels like a private school experience.

“You get a private school education on a public school budget,” Cram said.

“The science labs, the arts, the music, the Makerspaces—those are the extras that the state can’t provide. It’s been such an amazing benefit of partnership between MBUSD and MBEF that Manhattan Beach benefits from.”

Howorth, who has watched MBEF’s role evolve from her positions as a parent, a school board member, and now a council member, says the Foundation’s significance extends well beyond what it raises.

“The Ed Foundation does more than raise money,” Howorth said. “They raise awareness of what it takes to have what we have. And so you have this culture of parents who say, ‘Okay, I’ll run a bond campaign.

Okay, I’ll do this. Okay, I’ll run for school board.’ It’s a culture of engagement. It’s very intentional. It’s not by accident.”

Hilary Mahan, MBEF’s Executive Director, said that Manhattan Beach is a community that has made a collective decision.

“Our teachers, our parents, our students, our leadership—we’re all here because we’re committed to education and to the success of our students,” Mahan said. “I believe this community is unique because we’re all invested in that future together. We have the background, we have the education, we have the heart, the small-town quality where we walk to school with our neighbors and we see the success of our students as they graduate and move on—and come back.

We’ve created this culture of commitment and investment, and I don’t see that going anywhere.”

The MBEF Endowment, which began with a $10,000 donation in 1986, has grown to $25 million—a sustained, compounding expression of community commitment to its schools.

What the financial milestones don’t fully capture is the way the schools function as civic common ground. As Howorth put it: “You don’t have to be a parent to go to the Mira Costa drama productions. You don’t have to be a parent to think that Mira Costa

is your kind of place too.” The schools belong to everyone in the sense that the parks and the pier belong to everyone—as features of Manhattan Beach’s shared identity.

Mahan said that MBEF is about more than the sum of its parts.

“The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation is not just a single entity,” she said. “It represents our entire community of support, and we are simply a vehicle, albeit a mighty vehicle—a vehicle for our community members, parents, neighbors, residents in our community, to really support our public school system.”

Cram said. “We are building stronger foundations together.”

What families experience upon arriving locally is the sense that their children’s success is a matter of community concern, not just family concern. Parents are present in classrooms, not just at drop-off.

“You come and you meet these people who have kindergarteners and first graders,” Cram said. “And it really makes you think, ‘I’m so happy that you’re here and that you’re willing to put in the time and the work and the effort.’ The volunteering that goes on here— that’s what’s fun about being a part of a public school system, you do get to be in the classroom, and get to be a part of the collective environment, to be in the library, to be a part of the art room and the Makerspace classroom and the science room. You get to see it with your own eyes, and see your kids discover and learn and create. And that’s why we have such a masterpiece of a public school system here.”

Generations of Manhattan Beach residents have moved through the same campuses, creating a continuity of experience that gives the district something most school systems never achieve: a proven

MBUSD’s reputation functions as a kind of magnetic north for families weighing options across the South Bay and well beyond it—some trading private school tuition for MBUSD’s public campuses, others who are simply drawn to a community so strikingly unified in its collective goal to educate its children.

“I know firsthand that this is a community dedicated to the success of our students and our schools, who believes in the power of education, and who shows up for our students in tremendous, remarkable ways,” Linz said when she was introduced as MBUSD’s next superintendent. “You know, great schools and great districts don’t happen by accident. They happen because of great leadership, they happen because of great partnership, and they happen because we have a shared commitment that our students deserve the very best. And that’s why I wanted to come back here.”

Dohner described the commitment of community members to the education of its children in a succinct way that could serve as a summary of everything the data and the quotes and the anecdotes are trying to say.

“They show up,” she said, “and they turn out.”
