Kick-off your visit in El Segundo’s eminently walkable downtown, featuring a charming Main Street lined with unique eateries, breweries, and shops. Start your stroll at Library Park, where to the east you’ll appreciate the Romanesque architecture of historic El Segundo High School (featured in various films, including Amy Poehler’s Moxie and 2023’s Candy Cane Lane), and to the southwest, you’ll spot the city’s beloved public library. Head south down Main Street and browse the local small businesses, including oneof-a-kind Create & Express boutique and longtime full-service jeweler The Jewelry Source, before enjoying a lunch of sushi at Japonica, pasta at Jame Enoteca, or Oaxacan fare at the popular Sausal. GRAB COFFEE OR DO BRUNCH

Forty-eight hours of exploration requires fuel! Fortunately, El Segundo offers plenty of options for caffeinating and brunching both east and west of Pacific Coast Highway. Downtown, along Main Street, you’ll find the city’s flagship Blue Butterfly Coffee Co., named for the protected species of butterfly native to the area. Locals have been gathering at Blue Butterfly for more than 25 years, enjoying its hand-crafted beverages, breakfast and lunch entrees, and variety of baked goods. Don’t miss the rotating artwork produced by local artists installed on Blue Butterfly’s exposed-brick walls. (Locals’ tip: Blue Butterfly’s owners also operate a coffee-bean roastery and shop, Smoky Hollow Roasters, in El Segundo’s Smoky Hollow district.) West of Main, on Grand Avenue, Good Stuff restaurant serves a full menu of breakfast and lunch items with a side of irreverent beach culture. East of Pacific Coast Highway, look for Philz Coffee, with its unique drinks made right before your eyes by your own personal barista; and Marmalade Cafe, a classic mimosas-and-French-toast spot for leisurely, comfortable dining.

ENJOY SUN, SAND, & SEA

Once you’ve reached the heart of Downtown El Segundo, at Main Street and Grand Avenue, turn west onto Grand and walk or bike downhill to El Segundo Beach, if you’re feeling extra-adventurous! (Just keep in mind you’ll need to make your way back up!) While you’re heading down Grand, be it by foot, bike, or car, don’t miss artist John van Hamersveld’s mural installed on one of the water tanks set back from the street on the south side. El Segundo High School alumnus van Hamersveld earned worldwide acclaim for his work on the iconic poster for the 1960s film The Endless Summer, as well as album covers for The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and other legendary bands of that era.

As you crest Grand Hill and reach Vista del Mar, the north-south route running along the ocean, head straight ahead to the beach, which offers beautiful views north toward Santa Monica, a wide swath of sand for relaxing in the sun or playing beach volleyball, and showers and restrooms for convenience. Serious surfers can wander south over to nearby El Porto Beach, and those looking for land-based fun can bike or walk El Segundo Beach’s portion of the extensive Marvin Braude Bike Trail, known locally as The Strand. (Locals’ tip: El Segundo Beach is a key spot for spectacular sunsets at all times of year!)

Athletes and sports enthusiasts, take note! The small city of El Segundo is big on sports, from the pride it takes in its 2023 World Championship Little League team to its headquarters and training facilities for multiple professional teams. Named for El Segundo alumnus and MLB Hall-ofFamer George Brett, Brett Field in El Segundo’s sprawling Recreation Park hosts the city’s exceptional Little League teams and brings the whole community together for ball games. (Locals’ tip: much like the city’s Little League reputation, Brett Field’s snack bar is top-notch!) Venture east of Downtown El Segundo, a short drive across Pacific Coast Highway, and you’ll encounter three state-of-the-art athletic facilities connected to professional teams, all within two miles of each

other: The Toyota Sports Performance Center, where the L.A. Kings practice; The UCLA Health Training Center, home of and training facility for The Los Angeles Lakers NBA team and The South Bay Lakers G-League affiliate; and The Bolt, the headquarters and training-camp venue for the Los Angeles Chargers NFL team. Each of these worldclass facilities offers experiences for the public. Rent some ice skates and cool off at the rink at The Toyota Sports Performance Center, or take in a South Bay Lakers game during basketball season at The UCLA Health Training Center. Summertime visitors can grab free tickets to the Chargers’ summer-training camp at The Bolt in the run-up to football season. (Reserve those in advance online!)

Looking to burn a few extra calories and enjoy some friendly competition? Topgolf on Pacific Coast Highway in El Segundo offers active fun and entertainment for all ages and skill levels, complete with a full food-and-drinks menu. Those who prefer taking their exercise in a natural, outdoor setting can visit Recreation Park in El Segundo for tennis, pickleball, and drop-in play at the basketball courts.

Whether your idea of a good time is to cheer from the stands or be part of the action, El Segundo offers sports experiences for everyone.

DELIGHT YOUR INNER CHILD AT MATTEL

After exploring the pro-sports campuses on the east side of El Segundo, relive the magic of childhood at the headquarters and campus of makers of Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, UNO, Matchbox, and more! A portion of the Mattel campus in El Segundo is accessible to the public and worth a visit. From the entrance on Continental Boulevard, maneuver to the lobby of the main building, where the public is invited to browse impressive, colorful displays of Barbie, Hot Wheels, and other iconic toy brands. The on-campus Mattel Toy Store is a can’t-miss experience also, as it’s always well-stocked with products from nearly every Mattel brand.

PLANESPOT AT CLUTTER’S PARK

West of Pacific Coast Highway, atop a bluff overlooking Imperial Highway at the northern boundary of El Segundo, sits Clutter’s Park—a perfect vantage point for watching aircraft of all types take-off from and touch-down at LAX. Blending pretty trees and shrubbery with an awesome panoramic view of LAX (silhouetted by the San Gabriel and Santa Monica Mountains), Clutter’s Park offers both casual observers and professional photographers alike an opportunity to view first-hand the intricate air-traffic choreography of one of the world’s busiest airports. Pick a clear day, pop into Blue Butterfly, Two Guns Espresso, Starbucks, or even the nearby 7-11 for coffee, then snag some free street parking and cross over to the bluff on foot. Some seating is available. Bring binoculars if you’ve got them!

JOIN THE LOCALS FOR A HOLIDAY EVENT

The tight-knit and friendly community of El Segundo loves celebrating holidays, as evidenced by its handful of beloved annual holiday events. Summertime brings an all-day July 4th event, comprising daytime family activities, contests, and food tents in Recreation Park, plus nighttime live music and fireworks. October offers the afternoon-into-evening Halloween Frolic on Main Street, complete with bounce houses, pumpkin-decorating, costume contests, and more. December is prime holiday-celebration month in El Segundo, with a parade down Main Street, the Festival of Holidays and tree-lighting at the center of town, and the regionally famous Candy Cane Lane residential holiday-lights display. All of these events are free to enjoy and are very family-friendly.

STROLL AND SHOP

The South Bay boasts several beautiful outdoor shopping and dining plazas, and three of them are right here in El Segundo. Start at Plaza El Segundo, which features a huge, spacious Whole Foods market complete with juice bar, coffee bar, freshly made sandwiches, Mexican fare, a taproom, and more. (Locals’ tip: make a beeline for the pizza counter, where delicious made-to-order pizzas are available at low prices.) Plaza El Segundo also includes a Dick’s Sporting Goods, a PetSmart, a Nordstrom Rack, and other shops. Directly east of Plaza El Segundo is The Works, a thoughtfully designed and landscaped destination for shopping, dining, self-care services, and fitness. Visitors can enjoy sushi at The Bar, authentic Chinese delicacies at Northern Cafe Chinese Dumpling House and health-conscious dishes at Goop Kitchen and Veggie Grill. (Locals’ tip: Don’t miss the bustling yet relaxed California Fish Grill for customizable and affordable seafood dishes.) Directly southwest of The Works you’ll “get to The Point,” a strollable outdoor campus for shopping and dining that features a large fountain, a sprawling lawn for free summer concerts and other events throughout the year, and plenty of outdoor hangout spaces. Shopping here includes Nike, Lululemon, Madewell, and a Kendra Scott, among other well-known brands, and dining ranges from fast casual (Cava) to upscale (North Italia, Little Sister). Before you leave, treat yourself to a frozen confection from Van Leeuwen, situated at the center of The Point with lots of opportunities for people-watching.

9 CATCH A SHOW AT OLD TOWN MUSIC HALL

Located on the south end of Richmond Street in Downtown El Segundo sits a historic gem of classic old-Hollywood entertainment: Old Town Music Hall Built on the site of the original El Segundo State Theater and having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018, Old Town Music Hall is one of the only venues in the United States where a guest can watch silent films accompanied by live pipe organ. Programming includes screenings of classic silent and sound films every weekend, an annual ragtime festival, live concerts and pipe-organ concerts, and annual showings of holiday films. This is a truly unique cultural experience you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else!

UNWIND AT A BREWERY

Anchored by the renowned El Segundo Brewing Company on Main Street in Downtown El Segundo, the city’s craft-brewing scene has exploded in recent years, resulting in several independent breweries setting up shop within the city’s perimeter. In addition to El Segundo Brewing Company and its spin-off beer-andpizza space on Grand Avenue, Slice & Pint, El Segundo is home to several breweries that both make and serve high-quality craft beers and feature their own distinct vibes. These include Boardroom Brewery at Arena Street, Sugar Monkey Brewing & Social Club, and Five Point Five Brewing Company—and they’re all located within about a mile of each other.

BONUS ADVENTURE: ATTEND AN OUTDOOR FESTIVAL

El Segundo hosts a number of outdoor celebrations. The city’s pleasant, sunshiny weather and true walkability make it an ideal spot for festivals all year ’round. While you’re in town, check out any of the following, depending on the season.

Chilipalooza.

Headed into its fourth year, Chilipalooza is not just a highspirited chili cookoff competition—it’s a “block party in the park” hosted by Kiwanis that’s free to attend and includes live music, a cornhole tournament, and ticket sales for chili and beer/wine tasting. Look for Chilipalooza in early March.

SUMMER

BBQ and Comedy Festival. Produced by El Segundo’s own Dave Williamson, a successful standup comic, podcaster, and barbecue aficionado in his own right, the annual BBQ and Comedy Festival brings together nationally known comedians and top-of-their game pitmasters for four days of showstopping good eats and live comedy at venues across the city of El Segundo.

El Segundo Art Walk. Typically held in August, the Art Walk showcases fine art and photography from creators in and around Southern California, and brings high-profile music acts to an outdoor stage in the Smoky Hollow district.

Movie in the Park. This early August event takes place at the meticulously maintained Chevron Park at the southern end of El Segundo and is a fundraiser for the local Rotary club. For $5 apiece (children under age two are free), attendees can bring a blanket or low-backed lawn chairs and enjoy a family movie projected on a giant screen just as the sun sets on another beautiful South Bay summer evening. Doors open at 4pm; popcorn, beer, and wine are available for purchase.

COMMUNITY POLICE ACADEMY

The course is intended for those interested in learning more about how the El Segundo Police Department functions and operates. The goal of the program is to open the line of communication between our officers and the community. Each class is taught by one of our subject matter experts and topics include K9, School Resource, Motors, SWAT, Dispatch, Investigations, DUI and more. The FREE 10-week course is held on Wednesdays from 6-9pm and dinner is provided.

MOVIE IN THE PARK

Each summer, on the first Saturday in August, the community gathers for the Rotary Club’s annual Movie in the Park featuring a movie on a giant screen, food, drinks, bounce houses, fun and games!

MAIN STREET FAIR

The Kiwanis Club Main Street Fair is an annual tradition held every autumn in El Segundo. Eight city blocks are filled with artists and craft booths, vendors, kids’ games, a food court, beer garden, live music from local performers and more!

SUMMER CONCERTS IN THE PARK

Summer Concerts at the Library Park are a great way to spend your summer. Bring your appetite and your game face. Food trucks gather as crafts, games and giveaways begin. Sing along with our live musical performances. And don’t forget your blankets and chairs, but leave the glass containers and plastic tarps at home as they are not allowed. Leashed dogs are welcome to these all-age afternoons of great entertainment.

HOMETOWN FAIR

The first Saturday in May will find Library Park full of families and fun, including game booths, bake-off contest, carnival rides, arts & crats, vendor booths, the Rotary Rubber Duck Race and live music!

CHILIPALOOZA

Set up and vie for the title of El Segundo’s Chili Champ! The El Segundo Kiwanis present a fun day at Library Park each spring with delicious chili, cold beers, cornhole tournament, games and fun!

MAIN STREET CAR SHOW

The 3rd Saturday of August brings hundreds of classic and unique cars to Main Street with thousands of spectators. Sponsorship opportunities are available for this incredible event!

SUMMER FAMILY CAMPOUT

Art enthusiasts and community members are invited to the Annual El Segundo Art Walk (ESAW) taking place in creative businesses throughout the Smoky Hollow and Downtown neighborhoods of El Segundo. This event brings together more than 70 artists in over 50 venues. With many Art Walk activities on Main, Eucalyptus, Franklin, and Penn Streets, visitors are encouraged to arrive early and visit the different exhibitions and pop-up galleries. LET’S GET DOWN TO BUSINESS IN 90245

The city of El Segundo is ideally situated and has a rich history of innovation, technology, and manufacturing. Make it your business to check out this thriving yet charming spot just south of LAX airport.

Adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), at the northernmost point of the picturesque South Bay of Los Angeles, sits the coastal city of El Segundo—5.5 square miles of tight-knit community and thriving industry. Accurately self-described as a city “where big ideas take off,” El Segundo comprises a unique combination of cheerful beach vibes, enterprising small business, and robust Fortune 500 corporate headquarters and manufacturing.

AEROSPACE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Founded in 1917 as a company town for employees of the second West-Coast outpost of the Standard Oil Company (now Chevron), El Segundo saw its significance and desirability increase with the construction of Mine’s Field—the original airport at the site of what is now LAX—in 1928. Within four years, Douglas Aircraft Company had begun producing military aircraft in El Segundo, ultimately providing U.S. Navy airplanes for three wars over 30 years and firmly establishing the city’s aviation roots. World War Two and the period immediately following it saw El Segundo’s growth explode. Demand for military aircraft burgeoned, and both Douglas Aircraft (at the location of what is now Los Angeles Air Force Base) and North American Aviation, which had set up manufacturing operations at Mine’s Field, built thousands of airplanes for the war effort. Accordingly, El Segundo’s population nearly tripled during the war years, from 3,454 in 1940 to an estimated 10,000 in 1946. By 1950, that number had risen to 13,766.

In subsequent decades, El Segundo and part of neighboring Hawthorne became the aerospace capital of the world, with The Aerospace Corporation, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, and SpaceX all setting up operations in the area. Today in El Segundo, established players in the aviation, aerospace, and defense industries are joined by start-ups specializing in “deep tech”—the most recent wave of high-tech development, which aims to solve problems through the creation of sophisticated, complex solutions based on major scientific discoveries. One such innovator is Picogrid, a defense-technology firm that develops products to integrate military systems for land, sea, and space.

In May of last year, Picogrid established a

new state-of-the-art facility in El Segundo that “expands the company’s existing hub for research and development,” according to Picogrid’s press team, and triples the firm’s production capacity, providing more than 25,000 square feet for prototyping, manufacturing, and testing. Picogrid CEO Zane Mountcastle explains that El Segundo’s “DNA is deep tech. The city’s centurylong legacy in aerospace, from Hughes to SpaceX, has created a concentration of talent and manufacturing infrastructure that’s unmatched. For a company like Picogrid, this ecosystem isn’t just an advantage; it’s a necessity.” He adds, “Maintaining walkingdistance proximity to our key partners is a strategic advantage that makes a huge difference.”

El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel is proud of the way his city keeps its eyes focused on future development and growth in the deep-tech sector. “El Segundo has a wellearned reputation for openness to innovative and novel technologies,” he says. “We are so dense with people trying new approaches to technology that it’s easy to find talent, help, and support. It’s a collaborative and supportive community of founders.”

PLUSH BAY

El Segundo’s long history of attracting aviation and aerospace firms is not its only claim to fame—it’s also become a hub of the global toy industry. Moving its headquarters west from Hawthorne to El Segundo in 1991, toy-industry behemoth Mattel has drawn toy makers, toy brands, retail partners, and toy licensors to the city ever since. “And not only is El Segundo an anchor spot for the toy industry,” explains Toy Association President and CEO Greg Ahearn—whose organization recently established a 65-showroom building in El Segundo for toy companies of all sizes to display their products for buyers, media, investors, and more—“the city is in such close proximity to Los Angeles International Airport. There’s an ease of getting in and out. It makes sense logistically.” Ahearn also points to El Segundo’s access to Los Angeles’s film and television industry, with whom the toy industry shares countless collaborations and licensing deals. He cites entertainment giants Disney and Universal, specifically. Currently, toymakers Moose, Zuru, Jada Toys, and Playmates maintain a presence in El Segundo, in addition to Mattel and those who rent showroom space at the Toy Association’s new building. Plus, Ahearn says, hundreds more manufacturers and retailers will descend on the Toy Association’s new space in El Segundo for the annual L.A. Fall Preview, an industry event bringing together licensors, inventors, manufacturers, and others to “meet and do business. And we want those folks to get over to Downtown El Segundo, too, and visit and be a part of it, and see all the things going on there as well,” he adds.

BIG NAMES ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Large, household-name companies and corporations of all types seeking a West-coast home in Southern California have made El Segundo their chosen city. Within the past 15 to 20 years, El Segundo has seen wellknown and long-trusted businesses establish headquarters within its perimeter. These include cosmetics and haircare company L’Oreal; publisher and event company The Los Angeles Times; medical-device maker Karl Storz; plant-based-food developer Beyond Meat; Tri-Union Seafoods, owner of the Chicken of the Sea canned-tuna brand; and television- and streaming-service provider DirecTV.

Kings—plus the threetime WNBA Champion Los Angeles Sparks announced plans to build a 55,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art training and practice facility in El Segundo. “We had our hearts set on the South Bay when we started this process five years ago,” the Chargers’ Chief of Staff & Counsel Fred Maas told the press back in 2023 about the organization’s decision to build in El Segundo. “We saw a burgeoning fanbase here, and it had so many positive elements—the proximity to SoFi, proximity to LAX, and all the teams that are [already] here.” And as for working with the city of El Segundo’s local leadership? “I can’t say enough good things about them,” Maas enthused. “They’ve just been terrific to work with.”

El Segundo Beach and the city’s quaint downtown make it an ideal place to live, visit, and do business—and so do its shopping and dining venues. Retail thrives in El Segundo. Three outdoor shopping plazas provide a wide range of products and services in beautiful surroundings: The Point, Plaza El Segundo, and The Works. The newest of these, The Point, sits just north of Manhattan Beach on Pacific Coast Highway and features high-end shopping and dining on a campus surrounding a large green lawn and stone fountain. Shoppers enjoy browsing at Lululemon, Athleta, Herman Miller, Madewell, Warby Parker, Rabbit Ladders, and more. The Works, situated northeast of The Point, offers a number of services for families, including Breeze Pediatric Dentistry, Fireflies kids’ haircuts, Code Ninjas computer-programming programs for children, Legacy Dance Academy, and a Color Me Mine pottery workshop. Additionally, The Works is home to local-favorite Veggie Grill and other eateries, plus boutique fitness centers Barry’s and Hot 8 Yoga.

Plaza El Segundo, located just west of The Works, boasts one of the largest and most comprehensive Whole Foods Markets in the greater Los Angeles area. Not just a grocery store, El Segundo’s Whole Foods Market includes a sit-down bar and restaurant, several fast-casual eateries, a juice bar, and a coffee bar. Adjacent to Whole Foods is a Dick’s Sporting Goods, a HomeGoods, The Container Store, PetSmart, Nordstrom Rack, and Ulta Beauty. Set up as a traditional plaza-style shopping center, Plaza El Segundo offers convenience and plenty of well-lit parking.

Smaller, independently owned retail and dining establishments find themselves at home on Downtown El Segundo’s Main and Richmond Streets. Some of those most beloved by locals include The Jewelry Source, Create & Express, Slice & Pint, Sausal, Good Stuff Restaurant, and Jame Enoteca. These businesses are easily accessed via wide, landscaped sidewalks and ample free street parking.

El Segundo residents are proud of their local businesses, and those businesses love El Segundo right back. Opportunities for businesses to contribute to quality of life in the city are numerous, and include partnerships with educational organizations, community-service clubs, and the city’s Cultural Development program. “The city just feels so positive with people of all ages excited to be here and build the future,” explains Mayor Pimentel.

Brenda Newman, CEO of The Jewelry Source on Main Street in El Segundo and an active member of the community for several decades, says the opportunities for El Segundo businesses to support their community are plenty. “Getting involved is the easy part,” she says, “from joining the Chamber of Commerce to participating with The El Segundo Education Foundation [‘Ed!’] or belonging to service organizations like the Rotary Club or Kiwanis Club. We have many denominations of churches that need support, too, as well as a growing senior population.”

Sitting on one of the city’s commissions, committees, or boards is also very fulfilling, Newman adds. “I spent 12 years on the Planning Commission and enjoyed learning my way through the processes and parameters of land use. Participating on a dais making decisions to help continue to guide our city in a positive direction was very rewarding.”

El Segundo resident (for nearly 50 years), business owner, parent of three, and consummate volunteer Christa Caban suggests businesses of all sizes and specialties in El Segundo forge relationships with the city’s schools. “I believe the best way for new businesses to become part of the fabric of El Segundo is to get involved with our schools,” she states. “With over 3,300 students in our district and many generations of families who call this town home, the schools truly are the heart of our community. Businesses that partner with the El Segundo Education Foundation consistently see greater awareness and growth, and they become top choices for residents to support and recommend.”

It’s a win-win situation for both parties, Caban says of businessschool partnerships. “The Education Foundation also helps connect businesses with opportunities to set up internships, fostering the next generation of employees right here in town.

“That’s one of the unique strengths of El Segundo,” she continues. “We value fostering growth within our own community and building strong relationships from the very start.”

EL SEGUNDO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Currently led by Superintendent Dr. Jason Johnson, a career educator with previous experience as superintendent of Hermosa Beach City schools, El Segundo Unified School District (ESUSD) is widely revered for both its historic school buildings and its top-quality academics. The crown jewel of the district, El Segundo High School, is housed in a beautiful landmark building erected in 1927 that features architectural details similar to those of buildings at the University of California Los Angeles. The high school’s Lombard Romanesque style includes stately arches and a belltower in addition to outdoor courtyards and walkways. A meticulously maintained stadium, athletic fields, and a brand-new multipurpose building are positioned at the eastern end of the campus, just past the art, engineering, and music buildings. So photogenic it has appeared in a number of Hollywood films, including Moxie, Superbad, and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, El Segundo

High School sits neatly on a compact campus at the center of the city, across from grassy Library Park.

Even more remarkable than the high school’s outward appearance, however, are the academic programs within. Awarded the California Distinguished School honor several times over, El Segundo High School features a number of “pathway” programs to guide future leaders with specific career interests. These include the Engineering Pathway, the Biomedical Pathway, the Visual and Performing Arts Pathway, and the Business and Entrepreneurship Pathway. These pathways function a bit like college majors and provide classes and projects that prepare students for postsecondary success in specific fields.

ESUSD’s leadership recognizes the opportunities presented by its proximity to major defense, aviation, aerospace, tech, and Fortune 500 firms, as well as its access to small businesses within the community. As such, El Segundo High School’s College & Career Center aids students in coordinating local internships to provide true real-world, hands-on experiences. The school also sponsors an active and competitive DECA Business Club, whose “Gundo Merch” operation was one of 461 school-based enterprises reaching Gold Level status for the 2022-2023 school year.

Last year during my business class,” Simunac adds, “the teacher provided a lot of online resources through our Schoology account, so students could take advantage of that, too.” He says he found his recent Business Economics class “super-informative and valuable,” and he’s also found a number of business-related resources in the school library to be useful.

Project Lead the Way. Throughout ESUSD, at both Richmond Street School and Center Street School as well as El Segundo Middle School and ESHS, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) project-based learning is built into the curriculum via Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Emphasizing hands-on making, building, engineering, and projectbased learning, PLTW begins at the elementary level for all ESUSD students and continues right up through high school to its Biomedical and Engineering Pathways. Multiple schools in the district have earned PLTW “Distinguished School” recognition in recent years, for their

commitment to increasing student access to, engagement with, and achievement in their PLTW programs.

Littlest Learners. In addition to its K through 12 classes, ESUSD offers full- or partialday preschool (called “Eagles’ Nest”) and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes at both Richmond Street School and Center Street School. Combined, these classes serve students aged 3 through 5 and focus on developmentally appropriate play-based cooperative learning.

WISEBURN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

East of Pacific Coast Highway and ESUSD is another strong and well-respected local school district, Wiseburn Unified (WUSD). A small district comprising three elementary schools (Hollyglen, TK–2; Aviation, 3–5; and Del Aire, TK–5), one middle school (Wiseburn Middle), and a cohort of Da Vinci schools for students from TK through grade 12, WUSD serves about 2,400 students. Christine Carpenter, an El Segundo resident and English teacher at Wiseburn Middle School for 23 years, believes WUSD’s small size is its main strength. “Because of that,” she explains, “most teachers here at WUSD are on a first-name basis with district administration. She also points to the district’s diverse student population as a strength, and the bonds these students form with their teachers. “At the middle school, for instance,” Carpenter explains, “we take a team approach to knowing our students. Each grade level has two teams, so each student has a team of teachers who know them well. We also have a special advisory period, called a ‘pod,’ that meets for 45 minutes each school day. This time allows the teachers and students to really bond like a family and gives students an opportunity to have an adult on campus who they can feel comfortable going to if they need something.”

STEM for Students. Like ESUSD, WUSD prioritizes STEM and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) education and participates in Project Lead the Way. At each WUSD school site for grades TK through 5, a STEAM lab provides a designated space for students to engage in handson, inquiry-based, collaborative learning. At Wiseburn Middle, STEM/PLTW Teacher Andy De Seriere leads a class focused on engineering in real-world scenarios. And at the Da Vinci high schools (Communications, Design, and Science), PLTW and other STEAM elements are built into the curriculum and culture.

The Da Vinci high schools also make a point of collaborating with local industry, higher-education, and nonprofit organizations to benefit their students and the greater community.
