GREETINGS

WELCOME

On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Discover Claremont, welcome to Claremont!

A little over 20 years ago, when I was working with Buca di Beppo to open its popular Claremont restaurant location, my wife and I decided to make this town our family home. Over the past two decades, I’ve had the pleasure of participating in hundreds of school, theater, non-profit and other community meetings, first as a volunteer, and now representing the Chamber of Commerce. I have always known that Claremont is a unique place, but I have come to understand what makes it so special.

It starts with the people who commit their time and investment dollars to create a community where great experiences are possible, and all people are welcomed. From innovative restaurateurs who invested to develop our highly reviewed dining scene, to the business leaders who created light industrial and other high-paying jobs, our community members have put in the work to enable Claremont to thrive.

Second is the place itself - we have a unique location in the foothills, just far enough from Los Angeles to retain our smalltown feel, yet connected through transportation and technology to enable commuter and distance working. Claremont is one of those California cities from where you, as the saying goes, you can ski (Mt. Baldy) and surf (South Bay) in the same day.

Lastly, it’s the annual influx of students who attend The Claremont Colleges, providing our community with a uniquely optimistic look towards the future. Every day in Claremont, we are fortunate to see what tomorrow’s leaders of America -- and the world -- look like in the eyes of the students who adopt our town for their college and graduate years. What we give them as shopkeepers, restaurateurs, employers and landlords, they give back to Claremont by infusing innovative ideas and thought leadership.

If this is your first visit here, welcome. Whether you have teenagers who are preparing to attend college for the first time, or are just escaping for a weekend of dining and relaxing, Claremont is a place that you can call your home. Find ideas for attractions to visit, dining and other activities for your stay in this guide.

If you are considering Claremont as a permanent home for your corporation, small business or retail establishment, you will find a quick start guide to establishing a business locally on pages 50-51.

Find more visitor information, visit DiscoverClaremont.com for our current visitor calendar and links to hotel bookings.

Enjoy your stay!

CONNIE & DICK’S AUTO SERVICE CENTER

Connie & Dick’s Auto Service Center has been supplying professional automotive service and repair in Claremont since 1960. Since our early days of operating in the Claremont Village, we have seen a multitude of changes within the automotive industry. Since the very beginning, we have always pledged to stay on top of the technological changes by investing in continuing education and using proper equipment and technology needed to supply competent service for our clients.

Looking back to 1960, there were 36,399 fatalities due to automobile accidents. The calculated rate of per 100M miles travelled is 5.06. In 2019, that number has plummeted to 1.11. Wow, what remarkable progress!

Back in ’66, regulations required automobile manufacturers to alert vehicle owners of safety defects and recalls along with several emerging technologies like safety belts, collapsible steering columns, door safety latches, and dual hydraulic

brake systems. Today, we are servicing vehicles that have multiple networks linking over 60 computers. The onboard vehicle infrastructure of today is now supplying support for active safety, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), emissions and security.

Advanced Driver Assistance is supported by various machine-vision devices like radar, lidar, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. The features these devices supply support for are Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automated Emergency Braking (AEB), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and more. Since about 2005, these technologies have been populating the vehicles and over the past few years we have seen exponential growth of these systems in vehicles due to the National Transportation Highway Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) vision which paves the way for vehicles with Automated Driving Systems (ADS).

Connie & Dick’s is prepared to provide the proper vehicle care, maintenance, and repair with an overall goal of keeping your vehicle working safely and reliably so that your vehicle supplies a proper ROI. Each vehicle that comes in for service at our facility, be it electric, hybrid or gas, receives a comprehensive health check of all onboard computer systems and a check for any open recalls. We also are prepared to supply any recalibration operations on any of the ADAS components that may require such service during operations such as wheel alignments, windshield service, and or sensor replacement.

We are here for you and if you have any questions about the technology on your vehicle feel free to reach out. Contact us via www.connieanddicks.com or 909-626-5653. We would love to hear from you.

CLAREMONT NONPROFIT INVITES COMMUNITY TO BE THE DIFFERENCE FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

Over 400,000 children each year are not able to live with their families as the result of trauma, abuse, or neglect. The needs of these children are greater than what government funding provides. It’s the little things that make a big difference to a child, like a new bike or properly fitting clothes.

The Children’s Foundation of America, based in Claremont, identifies and accesses resources for children in need.

Their mission is to provide an opportunity for every person to help children heal, learn, and thrive. This is accomplished through CFA’s volunteer program, care package distribution, community fundraising events, scholarship programs, and sustaining giving program. Each year, CFA supports over 3,000 children at more than 20 agencies including foster care, residential treatment settings, mental health programs, crisis centers, shelters, underserved school districts, and more.

During National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April or National Foster Care Month in May, CFA hosts the annual ChariTea Fundraiser. The Back-toSchool Drive and the CFA Classic Golf Tournament are held in the fall. During National Adoption Month in November, CFA hosts the

Holiday Heroes Gala and, in December, conducts a toy drive and a gift-wrapping fundraiser at the mall. There are so many ways to make a lasting difference in the lives of children in need.

To get involved, call 909-426-0773 or visit www.ChildrensFoundationOfAmerica.org to see a listing of upcoming events, donate, or sign up to volunteer.

Looking for something to do in Claremont? Whether you’re a local, new in town or just cruising through, we’ve got loads of great tips and attractions.

CLAREMONT HILLS WILDERNESS PARK

Located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains and Angeles National Forest, the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park offers nature lovers a five-mile walking loop, along with smaller trails. The loop is one of the most popular in the Inland Empire, offering moderate elevation and dramatic views stretching to Downtown L.A., Catalina Island, and the Inland Empire basin. The 2.8-mile Thompson Creek Trail that abuts the park’s southern point is also popular with walkers, runners, bicyclists and leashed dogs.

CLAREMONT LEWIS MUSEUM OF ART

Located in the historic Claremont Depot, the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art celebrates the community’s rich artistic legacy and promotes the cultural vitality of the region by showcasing paintings, sculptures, and other works by local artists. Since the 1930s, Claremont has been both a magnet and haven for artists as Millard Sheets, Jean Ames, Phil Dike, and their contemporaries cultivated a tight-knit community, centered around the Claremont Colleges, that promoted collaboration, innovation, and experimentation.

CLAREMONT PACKING HOUSE

Built in 1922, the Claremont Packing House is the last standing of four packing houses built along the Santa Fe rail corridor during the height of the citrus industry. Today, a century of architecture comes alive with fine dining, hip boutiques, wine tastings, art classes, art walks, and festivals. In addition to being home to Packing House Wines, Gus’s BBQ, The Whisper House and other great eateries, it features Studio Claremont and Claremont Chef’s Academy classes, and Claremont Forum Bookshop, a nationally renowned bookstore that provides donated books to prisoners.

Featured in Westways, this “secret garden” was originally designed as a European medieval-style cloister garden and is a favorite destination on the Scripps campus. The fossil track and trackway collection is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

Called “one of the best works of public art in recent memory” by the Los Angeles Times, “Dividing the Light” gathers visitors on benches beneath a canopy that frames a window to the sky. At dusk and dawn, a lighting program bathes the canopy in changing colors, from goldenrod to turquoise, altering the viewer’s perception of the sky. WELLNESS

Wellness in Claremont is a Blend of Old and New

Nestled peacefully below the broad expanse of the San Gabriel Mountains, Claremont has been described as a community that combines small town charm with cosmopolitan and academic sophistication. It is also highly regarded for its healthconscious atmosphere with easy access to miles of hiking trails, spacious tree-lined parks, winding bike paths, as well as state of the art hospital and medical services.

At the same time, Claremont is home to some of the most forward-thinking wellness spas and therapeutic healing studios in Southern California. Three local Chamber members, in particular, are demonstrating the strength that comes from a pro-active unification of mind, body and spirit.

Claremont (with its emphasis on cryotherapy); Blossoming Lotus (Gryotonic, Pilates and integrated manual therapies including immersive sound bath meditation); and Halo Spa & Salt (offering a variety of specialized halotherapy skin-rejuvenating treatments) are incorporating these elements in new and exciting ways with the aid of cutting-edge techniques and technology.

Meet Ariana and Ian Vanderburg (of Aurora Claremont), Steven Von Hargett and Laura Crittendon (founders of Blossoming Lotus) and Nini Wongplai (owner of Halo Spa & Salt) who are dedicated to improving the health, pain-free mobility and inner spirit of their clients.

STEP INTO MY FREEZER

Glowing a soft shade of blue behind its large glass door and a ghostly mist swirling inside, the Aurora cryotherapy unit looks like a cross between a walk-in freezer and the transporter pad on the Starship Enterprise.

Ariana Vandenburgh laughs when I make the comparison.

“This is an entirely new way to do cold therapy,” she explains. “It’s a new technology based on old ways of healing. Cold has been used forever as a way of bringing down inflammation in the body. Many people associate cold therapy with high performance athletes (like LeBron James) because it provides incredible post-workout recovery, or as a lead-up to a demanding sporting event (like a marathon). It’s great used that way. But many of our clients come in because they find helps them manage their pain. In fact, this form of whole-body cryotherapy was originally conceived as a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.”

PVHMC is a 412 bed multi-specialty regional medical center and one of the largest not-for-profit hospitals in the greater Los Angeles area. They’re proud to host the first Skytron Efficient and Safe Environment Modular System (EASE) installation in the United States. This EASE system is clinically proven to reduce infections. Rounded corners and powder coating on surfaces increase the ability to fight off infections on structures and provide nowhere for bacteria to hide. In fact, the glass operating room can fight off bacteria growth with a 99.9% efficiency rate.

But PVHMC isn’t only about surgery. The center has joined with physicians from other area hospitals to conduct “$$$ for Physicals”, providing a combined total of more than 7,200 high school athletes their required pre-participation examinations.

Receptors in the skin send signals to the brain to release a host of endorphins and beneficial biochemicals.

Here’s how it works:

During a treatment, skin is exposed to subzero temperatures for two to four minutes. The body responds to this extreme environment by warming itself from the inside out. Receptors in the skin send signals to the brain to release a host of endorphins and beneficial biochemicals. Blood then rushes in to maintain body temperature within vital organs and is enriched with oxygen, enzymes, and nutrients before being recirculated throughout the body. This cold-induced vasoconstriction and subsequent dilation causes toxins in the body to be broken down and released naturally.

“Being in the chamber plays a little trick on the body and it goes into overdrive,”

Ariana explains. “The temperature is minus 124 degrees! We can also add wind-chill. When you’re in there, it can be incredibly liberating as parts of the body that are locked up are suddenly freed. It’s not a cure, but it can have an amazing affect. Some people often also have a very emotional experience that liberates deep feelings.”

Other specialized treatments at Aurora include: non-invasive, red-light therapy; compression therapy; the NanoVi inhaling system, an infra-red sauna pod, and special (nurse administered) vitamin infusions. Privacy is assured, and all the treatment rooms have the feel of a luxurious spa. Memberships and packages are available. https://www.auroramodernhealing.com

CRYOTONICS— PILATES MEETS BALLET

He was a professional skateboarder, motocross racer, martial artist and competitive kickboxer. (Hardly a low-impact career path). She was a highly skilled professional ballerina and modern dancer on stage and in music videos, as well as hula and belly dancing.

The shared experience that brought them together, however, was their injuries. And as part of their healing process, they specialized in learning a style of Pilates called the Gyrotonic Method.

Today, Steven and Laura (as husband and wife) are the owners and instructor/therapists at Claremont’s Blossoming Lotus Gyrotonic. Located off Foothill Blvd. (behind Trader Joe’s) they specialize in: fitness, whole body strength and flexibility, rehabilitation and moving beyond chronic pain, pediatric scoliosis management, traumatic brain injury, guided meditation and immersive sound baths— all dedicated to the art of aging gracefully. Their moto is: Move Better, Feel Better, Age Better, Live Better.

The Gyrotonic Method’s goal is to improve the body’s circulation and tone through a unique system of exercises.

“L aura and I both have medical backgrounds,” says Steven. “We’ve been well trained in physical therapy and are certified instructors in Gyrotonic Pilates. We also have a deep understanding of what it means to be in pain.”

The Gyrotonic Method was conceived in 1977 by the premier Hungarian ballet dancer, Juliu Horvath. Its goal of improving the body’s circulation and tone is accomplished through a unique system of exercises that incorporates movement principles from yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and t’ai chi. Central to the practice are a set of elegant wooden devices specially designed with rotational discs and weighted pulleys that allow the exerciser to strengthen muscles through specific exercises that incorporate circular and spiraling movement patterns.

“With Gyrotonic exercises,” Steven explains, “each movement is carefully crafted to flow from one into the next, allowing the joints to move through a natural range of motion without jarring or compression that serves to improve balance, strength and flexibility. Our Gyrotonic exercises are practiced in group or private classes.

“We are also STOTT PILATES instructors. We owned and operated the number one Stott Pilates and Rehab Pilates studio on the Big Island of Hawaii for 15 years, prior to moving to Claremont. We are trained and certified on all the apparatus and all levels. Our clients tend to be older and are often dealing with pain issues. They want to be able to do the things they used to do, like hiking. Our goal is to make that possible. Laura is also an expert at sound baths and guided meditation.”

The company’s specialized products are formulated with certified organically grown ingredients and clinical strength actives that are sold through licensed professionals.

As explained, “the system is designed to help properly care for and promote optimal skin health. It does so by employing pharmaceutical grade actives and nature ingredients in a unique 4-Step System that helps keep skin active, healthy and looking youthful.”

“We treat each patient like our family and our comfortable, relaxing office is designed to make you feel at home.”

And while the climate of Claremont tends to be beautiful, the combined forces of sun, dryness and air pollution are challenging over time on skin.

“We know your skin is unique. Your lifestyle and the environmental stressors you’re exposed to will change your skin over time. At Halo Spa, we tailor each treatment to your current needs to deliver healthy, glowing beauty. The highest quality products and cutting-edge technology provide safe and effective skin therapy in a tranquil setting. You deserve the very best.”

is heated and then ground and crushed into very tiny microparticles. These dry aerosol microparticles of salt are then dispersed into the salt room, salt cave, or salt chamber during a typical session. As an individual relaxes, the microparticles are inhaled. The particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli to aid respiratory concerns, while the non-inhaled salt particles are absorbed by the body to combat skin conditions. Most people are familiar with ‘wet’ salt therapy. Whether you’ve put salt in a bath, had a saline solution treatment, used a Nettie pot to clear your nasal passages, or gargled with saltwater, wet salt has its benefits. Dry salt is different, and the drier the salt, the better.

Other services offered include: Reconstructive Facelift Massage— a practical, non-invasive method of aesthetic face and neck correction due to age-related changes; Hydroimpact Plus (hydrogen skin treatment) and its water-jet application; and the Sugaring Hair Removal process known as Halawa.

It is abundantly clear that Claremont is a wonderfully healthy place to live. Even so, Claremont’s abundance of fine medical facilities, in conjunction with body and mind enhancing spas and studios, makes an enriching environment even richer.

versity design inspired by Oxford University. He sought to provide the specialization, flexibility, and personal attention commonly found in small colleges but with the resources of a large university.

In 1923, Blaisdell said, “My own very deep hope is that instead of one great, undifferentiated university, we might have a group of institutions divided into small colleges — somewhat of an Oxford type — around a library and other utilities which they would use in common. In this way, I should hope to preserve the inestimable personal values of the small college while securing the facilities of the great university.”

Visitors may enjoy a leisurely walk through the tree-filled campuses, where one can encounter architect-designed buildings from the 1880s to contemporary designs. Art, sculpture, and murals abound in hidden gardens and courtyards. Renowned architects practiced in Claremont, and many designed master plans for entire campuses and individual buildings located throughout America. Scripps College, considered one of the nation’s most beautiful college campuses, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by Gordon Kauffman, who also designed the Los Angeles Times

Building, Greystone Mansion, and Hoover Dam, among other works. The imposing Bridges Auditorium and the beautiful Mabel Shaw Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus were designed by Pasadena architect Myron Hunt, also known for the Huntington Hotel and Huntington Library.

Most likely, Claremont was named for Claremont, New Hampshire, when it was founded in 1887.

Since 1908, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce has played a major role in the civic, economic, and social development of the city. Established first as the Claremont Board of Trade, it changed its name to the Claremont Chamber of Commerce in 1920 and in 1922 affiliated with the chambers of commerce in San Gabriel Valley.

HISTORY QUICK FACTS
BEGINNINGS
The Chamber offices would eventually become part of City Hall under an agreement between the Chamber and the City. Today, the building serves as the City Manager’s office and the posts have been remodeled into arches.

In 1924, the Chamber established the first planning commission to create a civic improvement plan, build a civic center and back a bond issue for a new fire station. The Chamber organized meetings of townspeople to discuss subdivision regulations, city landscaping, paved streets, and location of business, industry, and residences.

Due to prompting from the Chamber, the City Board of Trustees passed an ordinance establishing a city planning commission. The Chamber worked with the city to develop the plans for the civic center. The first part of the new civic center on Second Street included a first-floor fire and police station and second floor city hall.

Given the close relationship between the Chamber and the city, the Chamber of Commerce building was constructed on the northwest corner of Second Street and Harvard Avenue in 1930. In 1948, the City Hall expansion was built that incorporated the Chamber Office and the posts of the old building were changed to arches to complement the new design.

In the early years, projects were spearheaded for the betterment of the community. The Chamber was able to secure systematic garbage collection, promoted a bond issue for street paving, advocated for flood control issues, worked to establish a post office and mail delivery, led the way in initial zoning efforts and standards for residential and commercial construction, advocated for development of the sewage system, supported the construction of the library and the establishment of parks, and participated in the founding of the Los Angeles County Fair.

Early Fourth of July and Christmas programs were sponsored by the Chamber. It distributed items to families in need throughout the year. It served as an employment agency for both workers and employers, collaborated with the Red Cross and operated as a general welfare center, coordinating the work of local agencies through its Claremont Welfare Council. The Chamber even served as the location for the unemployed to register, which became

a major function during the Depression.

From the early 1900s through the 1950s, the Chamber supported and promoted the local citrus industry nationally and created displays for the County Fair. The most significant influence on Claremont’s growth after World War II was the establishment of the Postwar Planning Committee by the Chamber.

This Committee laid the groundwork for planning decisions that inform the city today. The committee’s work addressed areas such as the business district, finance, zoning

LEILA MAKES HISTORY

Leila Ackerman served as the Secretary (Executive Director) of the Chamber from 1923 until 1944. Ackerman promoted the city and its businesses throughout the region and was responsible for designing the Claremont displays at the Los Angeles County Fair. She also developed marketing materials and wrote a brief history of Claremont.

ordinances, street trees, fire and police facilities, street maintenance, school district planning and parks, a professional rather than volunteer fire department, a city-manager form of government, designation of street trees for specific streets, creation of a parkways and streets commission, creation of a parks and recreation commission, tightening of zoning ordinances, and a proposal that led to the establishment of Memorial Park.

In the early days of the city, residents referred to the downtown area as the Village. As it grew it began to be called the Central Business District. In 1959, the Chamber launched a campaign to establish the Central Business District again as the Village. The campaign, with the cooperation of city officials, enlisted all businesses to refer to the downtown area as the Village, a name that is still used today.

The Chamber began its marketing of the uniqueness of Claremont in 1959 and that identity thrives today. The Chamber worked in conjunction with the hospitality industry to establish the Business Improvement District in 2009. The taxes collected by the hotels established Discover Claremont that markets the City in various media that helps drive visitors and business to the entire city.

WHAT WE DO

The Chamber operates as the Visitors and Convention Bureau. The Chamber on average fields over 8,000 phone calls, assists with over 6,400 walk-ins, distributes over 21,000 brochures and has over 89,000 page views on its website. The Chamber is the go-to authority for residents and others to seek business resources and provides information and outreach to visitors as

BEGINNINGS

Claremont has become a tourist destination. The Chamber established the annual Village Venture, that celebrated 40 years in 2022, to promote businesses and bring 15,000+ visitors to Claremont in October each year.

The Chamber supports and advocates for legislation that promotes a healthy community and business environment and quality development. It worked with the City and businesses during the 2007 Recession and during the pandemic to support and advocate for financial assistance programs and initiatives. The Chamber establishes and maintains excellent working relationships with elected officials. The Chamber Executive Director meets monthly with the City Manager to address challenges facing businesses and to support City endeavors.

The Chamber conducts monthly breakfast meetings to promote networking,

business to business connections, and highlights a different business at each meeting. Attendees are able to meet and engage with executive city staff, council members, and other elected officials. It conducts ribbon cutting ceremonies to introduce new businesses to the community and to celebrate milestones for established businesses. The Chamber Government Relations Committee meets monthly and representatives from federal, state, and local elected offices report and interact with business leaders.

The Chamber maintains a robust website that helps connect customers to businesses. It holds regular seminars and workshops on topics germane to the business community. The Chamber holds the annual State of the City luncheon to inform businesses about the city, its initiatives, and challenges, and the Annual Installation Gala is another opportunity for networking and establishing connections. The weekly e-newsletter not only promotes Chamber activities, but it is an opportunity for member businesses to advertise specials and promotions.

To support member businesses and introduce customers to those businesses, the Chamber holds monthly “Lunch Mobs,” where business leaders visit a member restaurant to network over lunch. Chamber business owners and others also gather at member establishments for “Happy Hour” gatherings. The Chamber maintains a robust gift card program for member businesses.

Customers may purchase gift cards at the Chamber and member businesses then submit them for reimbursement. Unlike other gift card programs, there is no fee to the customer or the business.

An active and engaged Board of Directors and Executive Director meet monthly to conduct Chamber business and address issues facing the business community. The Board of Directors includes the mayor, superintendent of schools, and a representative from the Claremont Colleges Services. The Ambassador Program consists of a core group of helpful and informed volunteers that check and meet with business owners to asses needs and provide support.

The Claremont Chamber of Commerce is the largest chamber in the area and is the only organization that promotes and supports all of the businesses in Claremont. It constantly moves forward and responds quickly to challenges and changes, while supporting the civic, economic, and social development of the business community.

The Chamber remains strong and continues its tradition of community involvement and remains steadfast to its historical beginnings, “To provide strong leadership in serving the interest of business, promote the inter-relationship between business and community, and encourage business participation with civic and educational organizations and programs within the Claremont area.”

After being located at City Hall for many years, the Chamber moved to Indian Hill in 1980, and later moved back to the Village.

Although it had no legal sanction under California law, a constitution for the Claremont Town meeting was adopted early in the history of the town. The Town Meeting had committees on stores and the downtown commercial area, but it wasn’t until December, 1908, that an association

was organized with the establishment of the Claremont Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was responsible for the first City Plan and enjoyed the same status as a chamber of commerce for several years. In 1922, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce was organized after a campaign by the Los Angeles Chamber. The Chamber’s first President was George Griswold.
