alk through the Claremont Village on a Saturday afternoon and you’ll experience it firsthand: lively sidewalks, bustling retail shops and cafés, and visitors admiring Claremont’s tree-lined streets and historic architecture.

These include the Padua Theater, now used as a popular event venue; the Claremont Depot, home to the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art; and the Verbal Building—originally the First National Bank of Claremont— now home to offices, a yoga studio, and Pizza N’ Such, which serves delicious food and libations. Other examples include the College Heights Packing House, a vibrant shopping and dining destination; the original Ice House, now home to the popular Back Abbey restaurant; and the Old School House, which today houses offices, restaurants, and fitness facilities.

More Foothill Gold Line On The Way

Funding for the Pomona to Claremont A Line Extension is mostly coming from SB125 through Metro.

The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority completed the 9-mile, four-station Glendora to Pomona extension of the Metro A Line light rail system on time and on budget, which opened for passenger service on September 19, 2025.

The 2.3-mile Pomona to Claremont A Line Extension will add a new station in the city of Claremont, and is now underway with final design and pre-construction. Major construction is expected to begin in late 2027 and take approximately four years.

When people ask me what makes Claremont special, they often expect me to talk about our beautiful tree-lined streets, historic Village, vibrant arts community, local businesses, or world-class colleges. And while those are certainly part of our story, they are not what first comes to mind.

Over the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of individuals who call this community home. Business owners who know their customers by name. Community leaders who work every day to make Claremont a place where people feel welcomed, connected, and valued.

What I have discovered is that Claremont is more than a place. It is a community of people who genuinely care about one another.

All true. But that’s not really what you notice when you’re here.

What stands out is how easy it is to settle in without a plan.

A weekend in Claremont works best when you leave space for it to unfold. The more loosely you approach it, the more the city reveals itself, not through big moments, but through small decisions that shape the experience.

Start by arriving without much urgency. Stay at a hotel near the Village if you can. Being within walking distance changes the entire feel of your stay. You won’t need to think about parking or directions.

As the evening sets in, head toward the Village. You’ll notice quickly that everything feels close. Restaurants, shops, and outdoor spaces, all within a few blocks. There’s no pressure to choose the “right” place. Pick a space that serves the moment, slow down, and let your time begin there. Claremont’s dining scene has built a reputation as a place worth driving for, with dozens of locally owned restaurants and specialty spots close together. The benefit for you is simple: you don’t have to plan it out.

After dinner, keep walking. Maybe you stop for dessert, maybe you don’t. Maybe you end up browsing a shop that’s still open or just circling back toward your hotel. The pace is yours to set. That’s part of the appeal.

A Saturday morning comes quietly.

DINO LOVERS UNITE! Dinosaur lovers can discover artifacts of the ancient giants at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, the only nationally accredited museum located on a high school campus in the United States. The museum has two circular exhibit areas totaling 4,000 square feet: the Hall of Footprints and the Hall of Life.

The fossil track and trackway collection is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

At some point, you’ll find yourself near the Claremont Colleges. Even if you didn’t plan on visiting, it’s worth stepping in.

What makes them stand out isn’t just their academic reputation, but how open and integrated they feel. Seven institutions share a contiguous space, blending together in a way that creates something closer to a small city than a traditional campus.

Walk through the grounds, and you’ll pass gardens, courtyards, sculptures, and buildings that span generations of design.

It doesn’t feel like a formal tour. It feels like you’ve stumbled into a place from another time that was meant to be experienced slowly. You don’t need a destination here either. Just keep moving, take a few turns, and let the setting do the work.

By midday, you’ll start to feel hungry again, but there’s no reason to rush into a reservation. This is where Claremont’s layout works in your favor. Everything is close enough that you can decide in the moment.

Maybe you stop into Wolfe’s Market and put together something simple to enjoy outside. Maybe you sit down somewhere in the Village or head toward the Packing House for a slightly different atmosphere.

The Packing House offers a shift without requiring much effort. Housed in a historic building, it brings together a mix of food, drink, and small vendors under one roof.

It’s easy to spend more time here than you expected, moving from one place to another, picking up a drink, sharing something small, then lingering a bit longer.

The afternoon doesn’t need much structure either. This is a good time to wander through shops, step into places you didn’t plan to visit, and let curiosity lead. Claremont has a way of rewarding

that approach. Boutiques, vintage stores, bookstores, specialty shops, they’re all part of the experience, but none of them demand your time. You choose what fits.

There’s also a layer of history here, though it doesn’t present itself as something separate from the present. The Village, for example, wasn’t always called that. The name was part of a deliberate effort to shape the identity of the downtown, an idea that stuck and continues to define how the area feels today. That kind of intentional planning shows up in subtle ways, in how the streets connect, how businesses cluster, and how the space feels cohesive without being overly designed.

As the day transitions into evening, you don’t need to reset or start over. Just keep going. Maybe you head back to your

Many of the leaders interviewed for this article could trace important moments in their lives and careers back to a simple reality: someone invested in them before they felt fully ready.

For Abby Pascua, CEO of AgingNext, that lesson has shaped both her leadership philosophy and her understanding of community.

“When I look back on my own journey, I can point to individuals who gave me opportunities before I felt fully ready for them,” she shared. “They saw potential in me that I didn’t always see in myself.”

That experience is one many people can relate to. Growth often begins when someone offers encouragement, guidance, or an opportunity that feels slightly bigger than our current abilities. Sometimes all it takes is one person willing to believe in someone else’s potential.

Kathleen Fariss, CEO of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, believes one of the greatest gifts we can give another person is our belief in them.

Josh Merry, Vice President and Branch Manager at California Bank & Trust, shared a lesson from one of his mentors that continues to influence him today.

It is a simple idea, but one that speaks to a broader truth. Communities become stronger when people willingly share their experience, wisdom, and support with others. Whether through formal mentorship, volunteerism, professional development, or simply taking time to encourage someone, investing in people strengthens the entire community.

As Pascua noted, some of the most rewarding moments in her career have come from watching volunteers become advocates, staff members become leaders, and individuals discover strengths they never knew they possessed.

For her, leadership is more than building organizations — it’s about building people.

RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE FOUNDATION

While opportunities and mentorship help people grow, relationships are what hold communities together.

Several contributors pointed to relationships as one of the defining characteristics of Claremont.

Stacey Caponigro, Realtor and Regional Property Manager, believes that is what makes the community unique.

“Claremont has a way of making you feel connected,” she said. “It is a community where relationships matter and where people still take the time to get to know one another.”

As a business owner, Caponigro has long believed that business is fundamentally about relationships.

Over the years, she has watched clients become friends, worked alongside fellow business owners who support one another, and volunteered with organizations committed to strengthening the community.

That spirit of connection extends beyond business.

It can be found in nonprofits working to address community needs. It can be

found in schools, volunteer organizations, neighborhood groups, local events, and community partnerships. It appears whenever people choose collaboration over isolation and connection over convenience.

Michelle Bligh, President of Claremont Graduate University, sees that same spirit reflected throughout the community.

“What stands out is the willingness of people to invest in relationships. Whether through our educational institutions, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, cultural organizations, or neighborhood gatherings, there is a spirit of engagement that creates a strong sense of belonging.”

Bligh believes Claremont’s unique character comes from its ability to combine intellectual curiosity with genuine community. The city’s educational institutions bring together people from around the world, while the broader community creates opportunities for connection, civic engagement, and service. Together, those relationships help foster a culture where people continue to learn from one another, support local causes, and work toward common goals.

Fariss sees connection as the thread that ties communities together.

“People want to know they matter,” she explained. “Connection creates trust. Trust creates collaboration. And collaboration creates the conditions where people and communities can thrive.”

She believes many of Claremont’s greatest strengths stem from people choosing to engage with one another, support local causes, and invest their time and talents in making the community stronger.

Pascua experienced that firsthand through her involvement with Claremont Young Professionals. What began as an opportunity to connect with other professionals ultimately became a window into the broader culture of the community.

She watched relationships form, partnerships develop, and young professionals grow into leaders who now help shape Claremont’s future.

“What makes Claremont special is not its reputation, its colleges, or even

its beautiful trees,” she reflected. “It’s the nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and community members who continue to invest in each other and work together to make this community stronger.”

That sentiment may best capture the common thread running through every conversation. The colleges matter because people invest in education. The Village matters because people create gathering places. Local businesses matter because people build them, support them, and contribute to the community around them.

Even the traditions that define Claremont endure because people continue showing up year after year to participate, volunteer, and carry them forward.

At its core, community is built through relationships.

One of the most interesting themes to emerge from these conversations was the repeated rejection of a common misconception: that kindness and accountability are somehow opposites.

In reality, many contributors argued the opposite.

For Pascua, some of the kindest moments in leadership happen during the most difficult conversations.

Caponigro shared a similar perspective.

“I don’t believe kindness and accountability are opposites,” she said.

“Some of the kindest things we can do as leaders are set clear expectations, communicate honestly, and follow through on our commitments.”

Jim Elsasser, Superintendent of the Claremont Unified School District, believes kindness and accountability belong together.

“Kindness is not the absence of high standards; the two belong together,” he said.

Through his work in education, Elsasser has found that some of the most meaningful leadership moments come from helping people grow while also challenging them to reach their potential. He believes people thrive when they feel genuinely seen and supported, but also when expectations are clear and meaningful.

Reflecting on the Class of 2025, who were kindergarten students when he arrived in the district, he points to a generation that is compassionate, engaged, and willing to stand up for what is right.

“When I see students mentoring younger peers, organizing to support a cause, or simply choosing kindness when no one is watching, I am reminded that the future rests in remarkably good hands.”

Pascua pointed to individuals who continue saying yes to opportunities even when they feel unprepared, choosing growth over comfort and service over hesitation.

CLAREMONT NONPROFIT RECOGNIZED AMONG BEST OF THE BEST Each year, nearly 400,000 children are unable to live with their families due to trauma, abuse, or neglect. While government funding provides essential support, the needs of these children often surpass available resources. The Children’s Foundation of America (CFA), based in Claremont, bridges this gap by identifying and accessing resources to help children heal, learn, and thrive.

Claremont is home to one of the most distinctive higher education systems in the country: a consortium of seven independent institutions located within a single square mile.

The Claremont Colleges include five undergraduate schools: Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Pitzer College, as well as two graduate institutions: Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute.

Each campus operates independently, with its own academic focus, faculty, and student experience. In its earliest years, Claremont was an agricultural town, with citrus serving as the backbone of the local economy. The Claremont Board of Trade, established in 1908 and later becoming the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, played a central role in promoting that industry and guiding early development. A CITY SHAPED BY EDUCATION

Claremont’s identity is inseparable from its colleges. What began as a vision in the early 20th century became one of the most distinctive academic models in the country.

In 1925, Pomona College President James A. Blaisdell proposed a consortium model inspired by Oxford, one that would combine the intimacy of small colleges with the shared resources of a larger university.

That idea became the Claremont Colleges, now a group of seven institutions spread across contiguous campuses.

Nearly a century later, the consortium continues to define the city. With thousands of students, faculty, and staff, the colleges bring intellectual energy, architectural character, and cultural depth to Claremont.

Claremont’s downtown did not always carry the name it does today. Originally known as the Central Business District, it was rebranded as “the Village” in 1959 through a coordinated effort led by the Chamber. The name reflected something more than geography; it captured a sense of place.

That same period marked a broader shift in how Claremont saw itself. No longer defined solely by agriculture or early development, the city leaned into its identity as a walkable, communityoriented destination. Local businesses, civic institutions, and residents all played a role in shaping that character, one that continues to attract visitors today.

Most likely, Claremont was named for Claremont, New Hampshire, when it was founded in 1887.

Although it had no legal sanction under California law, a constitution for the Claremont Town meeting was adopted early in the history of the town. The Town Meeting had committees on stores and the downtown commercial area, but it wasn’t until December,

1908, that an association was organized with the establishment of the Claremont Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was responsible for the first City Plan and enjoyed the same status as a chamber of commerce for several years. In 1922, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce was organized after a campaign by the Los Angeles Chamber. The Chamber’s first President was George Griswold.
