A

lamogordo is positioned in the heart of the Tularosa Basin, a basin born 10,000 years ago as the Ice Age drew to a close, and the basin became a giant lake trapped between two mountain ranges. The lake evaporated, leaving behind the largest gypsum deposit on the planet. It also left behind community brimming with culture, history, and the friendliest people on earth.

Early settlers of the basin found a country that didn’t lend itself to the faint of heart. Those drifting into this country looking for adventure certainly found it. C. L. Sonnichsen, in his book Tularosa: Last of the Frontier West, described the basin in its early days as a “Parched desert where everything from a cactus to a cowman, carries a weapon of some sort, and the only creatures who sleeps with both eyes closed are dead.” But those early pioneers, as tenuous as that life was, recognized its beauty, opportunity, and endless potential. Pure fortitude transformed this county into a place where once experienced, is impossible to forget. A place where arrow heads and six shooters have been replaced with the most high-tech weaponry the world has ever known.

usan Payne and her husband Ray moved their family to Alamogordo in January of 1994. They relocated from California because they wanted to raise their children in a safer environment. Susan’s husband was not new to Otero County as his family was one of the first settlers in Weed, NM back in the mid-1800s, and he was born right here in Alamogordo. They love our city and all that it has to offer.

“It has been a great place to raise our family, and now we get to watch our grandchildren thrive as well. We enjoy going to our local high school sporting events as well as having the ability to virtually be in any part of our city in just minutes. Most of all, we are excited about the future of our city and the direction we are heading. I am serving, my first term as Mayor after serving as a city commissioner for District 3 the past six years. I am the Executive Director of Love INC of Otero County, a human services non-profit organization, since 2009. My professional career includes extensive experience in accounting and non-profit management. My previous employment includes working for Mazda Motor of America in Irvine, CA., Seeds of Life Ministries, and the United Way of Otero County here in Alamogordo, NM. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Park University. While I am excited about the work that I have accomplished in my community, I consider my greatest joy to be my beautiful family. My husband Ray and I have three children Jessica (husband Julian), Ray Jr., and Kimmy (husband Kobe), and 6 grandchildren, Sydney and Dane, Kennedy and Kobe Jr., and Ryan and Selena whom we are extremely proud of.”

Founded in 1898, our city name means “fat cottonwood.” We were developed originally as a railroad junction in the midst of a ranching and farming culture. We are neighbors to Holloman AFB, the White Sands Missile Range, and White Sands National Park, our nation’s newest park.

Outdoor Adventure

Alamogordo offers recreation lovers opportunities to hike, bike, hunt, golf, horseback ride, and ski (in the nearby Village of Cloudcroft) Sightseeing, scenery, gypsum sand, roadside eccentricities… so many choices, so little time!

White Sands NATIONAL PARK

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

White Sands National Park, is an incredible natural wonder and our crown jewel. You will feel like you have dropped into another world! Located just 15 miles southwest of Alamogordo in the heart of the Tularosa Basin this is our nation’s newest park. White Sands covers 275 square miles and is the largest active gypsum dune field on Earth.

Sledding, photography, and hiking are among the most popular activities.

There are ranger-led programs, sunset strolls, moonlight hikes, a raised Interdune Boardwalk, and interactive exhibits on the Dune Life Nature Trail.

Stop at the visitor center to learn more and make sure you have plenty of water and sun protection to stay safe. www.nps.gov/whitesands

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is located just south of Alamogordo, on Highway 54 at the mouth of Dog Canyon, in the Sacramento Mountains. This is a favorite campground for area visitors. Camping sites and recreational trails offer stunning views of the Tularosa Basin, clear across to the Organ Mountains. There is a refuge of a stream and spring-fed pools - a rare find in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Guided tours are available of the rebuilt 19th-century ranch house of Oliver Lee, an influential early settler. Nearby, Lincoln National Forest was established in 1902 and offers a balance of timber resources, protected wilderness areas, and popular recreation and sports areas. Encompassing over 1 million acres, there are 3 major mountain ranges, 3 ranger districts, and many opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and ATV use.

There are over 100 maintained trails, developed campgrounds, and picnic areas. Headquarters in Alamogordo can provide maps, campground info, and trail guides. This trip into the Sacramento mountains can take you to the Sunspot Solar Observatory, a research facility established in 1947. Guided tours through the observatory are available.

Nearby, Cloudcroft is a great stop for some shopping and food. You will also find the Sacramento Mountains Historical Museum here. If your visit is in winter, know that Ski Cloudcroft operates a small area for skiing with 25 trails, snowboarding, and tubing, and the village offers an outdoor Ice Rink.

As you return to town, the Old Apple Barn is fun to visit. The 12-foottall Apple Boy is hard to miss! Hosting over 80,000 visitors a year, this store is a vintage emporium offering unique gifts, fresh pie, fudge, and more! Ciders and vintage sodas are local favorites.

Pistachios

Between Alamogordo and Tularosa on US 54, you can learn about our area’s farming history and culture at the largest pistachio groves in New Mexico. Take farm tours, snack, and taste wine at Heart of the Desert and McGinn’s PistachioLand. A huge heart and 30-foot pistachio are your landmarks.

Located at 2351 Hamilton Rd, Desert Lakes is a quality public facility that is located at the base of the Sacramento Mountain range. The course features four sets of tees for all levels of play.

The front nine is a tree-lined, parkland-style layout and the back nine is cut out of the desert. There are numerous water hazards, making the course challenging yet interesting. We enjoy yearround golf here, with summer highs in the 90s and moderate winter temperatures.

White Sands Balloon & Music Festival

If your visit happens in September, this festival is a wonderful adventure, one day at the Ed Brabson Balloon Park, the next at White Sands National Park.

The Alamogordo Center of Commerce in partnership with the New Mexico Tourism Department presents hot air balloon mass ascensions, live music, food and craft vendors, the Runyon Ranch Petting Zoo, and a cornhole tournament.

INdoor EXPERIENCES Tularosa Basin Museum of History

At the corner of 10th St and White Sands, you will find the Tularosa Basin Museum of History, a striking white Pueblo Revival building, where life in the 19th and 20th century is on display. Collections of artifacts, photographs, and everyday items of early life in the area will help you understand our connections to Apache homelands, Spanish sheepherders and cattle ranching, the military, La Luz Pottery, and the railroad.

Alamogordo Park Zoo

For family fun, visit the Alameda Park Zoo, the oldest in the Southwest.

Established in 1898, this 12-acre zoo is home to 200 animals from 90 species and offers educational programs and environmental teaching. Guided tours are available as well as an Earth Day Celebration.

The zoo hosts a live music series on the 4th Fridays of each month from March through August.

It is located at 1321 N. White Sands Blvd.

American Armed Forces Museum Toy Train Museum

In Alameda Park, at 1991 White Sands Blvd, you will find the Toy Train Museum. Here you can ride a small-scale train around Alameda Park and see a century-old depot. The world’s smallestscaled train is exhibited along with hundreds of locomotives and passenger and freight cars.

This museum was founded in 1997 and was organized to collect and preserve military memorabilia from all branches of service. Located at 144 US-82, it commemorates all wars and military engagements in which our forces participated. Education is provided through historical displays. Alamogordo is known as the cradle of America’s space program. The history, science, and technology of space travel are showcased at the New Mexico Museum of Space History, located at 3198 State Route 2001. Visitors can see moon rocks and replicas of the first man-made satellites and can try piloting. This is truly a hands-on experience! The International Space Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of many pioneers who contributed to the advancement of space exploration. Additionally, the New Horizons Dome Theater & Planetarium offers breathtaking movies and educational programs.

White Sands Missile Range Museum To learn about America’s missile and space activities, a stop at the White Sands Missile Range Museum is a must. Established in 1994, this museum is located on an active Army installation and exhibits artifacts and materials related to the WSMR and the Tularosa Basin. Missile Park features a restored V-2 rocket and a variety of missiles, rockets, aircraft, radars, and optical equipment. The Range itself is the largest testing range in the United States. It is used by Holloman AFB, Ft. Bliss, and many worldwide defense contractors.

The Flickinger Center for Performing Arts, a live performance venue, brings a variety of music, dance, and theater events, community programs, and collaborative offerings to Alamogordo.

Otero County Heritage Days is an annual event sponsored by the Flickinger that celebrates our diverse culture in performance, documentaries, museum exhibits, music, and organic foods.

The Trinity Site

The beginning of the nuclear age can be experienced with a visit to the Trinity Site on White Sands Missile Range. On July 15, 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated here. This historical site is open to the public 2 times a year in April and October. At ground zero you can learn about the history and scientists involved with the Manhattan Project when the world was changed forever.

Holloman Air Force Base

Holloman Air Force Base, established in 1942, supports national security objectives and deploys combat-ready Airmen worldwide. It is located 15 miles southwest of town. The 49th Wing serves as the primary F-16 and MQ-9 school for the United States Air Force, training more than 150 F-16 pilots and 700 MQ-9 pilots and sensor operators annually. The wing also delivers Air Transportable Clinics and Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources. There are more than 21,000 Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, retirees, DoD civilians, and their family members supported by HAFB. Holloman has the world’s longest and fastest test track. The Test Group’s mission is to operate world-class test facilities for high-speed sled track testing, navigation and guidance system testing, radar signature measurements, weapon systems flight testing, and as liaison for AF programs tested at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR).

The world land speed record for a railed vehicle was set by the 846th Test Squadron with a run of 6,453 mph or Mach 8.5 Many missions have been supported by Holloman AFB personnel participating in numerous operations and conflicts. There is assistance to the White Sands Missile Range in support of the Space Harbor, an alternate runway for NASA space shuttle missions.

Downtown Revitalization Efforts

The world of art, culture and communitybuilding is further coming alive in Alamogordo in collaborations with businesses and galleries, historical renovation, and economic development planning in the downtown area. This stretches from non-profits like Otero Arts, and the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts to create partnerships and entrepreneurial incubation. Additional efforts, such as The Dudley School Preservation Project and the Alamogordo Railroad History Park, are underway thanks to the vision of the Tularosa Basin Historic Society in coordination with the City, public volunteers, the business community, and a grant from Union Pacific.

Alamogordo MainStreet is a 501(c) (3) involved in downtown revitalization.

Its national accreditation allows access to extensive technical expertise and assistance. Our local program is Boarddirected and managed by a coordinating program with NewMexico MainStreet.

Funding, based on population, comes in a contract with the city.

“The accreditation we have achieved is a feather in our cap, and we have a City Mayor, Commission, and City Manager who are very supportive and pro-MainStreet. We are working on a $1.9 million Great Blocks Project, which is a full streetscape redo of the 800 and 900 blocks. The city will be doing underground utilities, and the state is expected to assist through capital outlay funds. Groundbreaking is projected for Spring, 2023. This project will involve the street, sidewalks, benches, and lampposts.

Additional funding is being sought for facade improvements. Merchants of Downtown Alamogordo (MODA) has formed to strengthen relationships and foster support for upcoming construction.

Alamogordo has an array of medical care services and first responder programs to meet the needs of our community.

Otero County, in coordination with the NM State Department of Health, is dedicated to assessing community needs and improving access and availability of healthcare resources. The City of Alamogordo has both a Disability and Aging Council and provides extensive resources for children and families as well as senior volunteer programs.

Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (GCRMC) is a 99-bed acute care medical facility and level 3 trauma center.

With a staff of over a thousand, the center is a joint venture with Holloman Air Force Base. The medical staff offers specialty services that are not commonly found in rural New Mexico including Wound Care, Inpatient Rehabilitative Care, dedicated Hospitalist Care, and the Joint Center and Cardiac Cath Lab. Physicians from HAFB can admit Department of Defense patients and their dependents to GCRMC for treatment.

This shared-facility model has existed since December 1999 and is considered a great success. GCRMC, a private non-profit organization, is committed to technological excellence, maintaining and developing state-of-the-art services, and recruiting new physicians.

The Alamogordo Ben Archer Health Center was established in 2000. Services include medical, dental, and behavioral health. Located at 2150 US HWY 54 South, this modern, state-of-the-art facility provides care to all individuals, regardless of their ability to pay.

Coordination and educational services are offered to pregnant women, new parents, and individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The staff consists of 7 medical providers, 4 dental providers, and a behavioral health provider.

New Mexico Bone & Joint Institute provides sub-specialty care in orthopedics, podiatry, wound care, and interventional spine pain management to Southern New Mexico. Originating in Alamogordo, 2 additional locations are now available in Las Cruces and Ruidoso.

The Southern New Mexico Surgery Center, LLC, located at 2301 Indian Wells, is an outpatient surgery center that opened in 2006. This physician-owned facility provides cost-effective care in a convenient facility. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and certified by Medicare. In addition to surgical interventions, support services and education are provided.

Alamogordo Physical Therapy & Wellness provides physical and occupational therapy, including both rehabilitation and education. Located at 2351 Indian Wells Rd, services include team-directed diagnosis and therapy as well as fitness and wellness programs.

Alamogordo is home to The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI.) Founded in 1903, this is a specialized school that provides residential, academic, support, and outreach services to students who are blind and visually impaired in New Mexico. NMSBVI is an innovative leader in educating students and ensuring quality collaborations with students, families, and local/state/national partners. They provide outstanding advocacy, training, resources, and support services. The school is located at 1900 N White Sands Blvd.

Alamogordo offers additional comprehensive health services including Home Health Care and Hospice, and outpatient occupational and physical therapy. There are numerous pharmacies, oxygen and home medical equipment suppliers, behavioral health services, fitness centers, chiropractic services, urgent care clinics, dental & orthodontic services, and eye care.

Alamogordo Fire Department The Alamogordo Fire Department is made up of full-time paid and volunteer firefighters. The city has seven manned stations and is committed to fire protection, prevention, emergency response, emergency and disaster planning, and code enforcement.

The Department provides fire protection within the city limits, unless requested by Otero County or other agencies for major emergencies.

Alamogordo Police Department

Keeping Alamogordo safe is a top priority for our police responders. In 2018, the Alamogordo Police Department was re-accredited by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Professional Standards Council. Accreditation is voluntary and not an easy task to complete. The process included the review of more than 200 professional standards, and the Alamogordo Police department is the only one in 20 agencies in the state that has this accreditation. The mission directs the implementation of strategies that reduce crime, the fear of crime, and advocate for animals and their care.

Alamogordo has a low crime rate and is home to a newly formed K-9 unit. The police department is divided into 11

The Alamogordo-White Sands Regional Airport, located at 3500 Airport Rd, is a general aviation airport owned and operated by the City of Alamogordo. Update for the 20-year period through the year 2033. The close proximity of Holloman Air Force Base with a large and active military pilot population has had a significant influence on aviation activity at ALM. In addition, it has been noted that much military personnel who have been stationed at Holloman have returned to the Alamogordo area after retiring and many of these retirees have continued their aviation activities.

Military Community

US Air Force’s Holloman Air Force Base and US Army’s White Sands Missile Range are unique and major assets for Alamogordo and for the nation. The cultural and economic impact is huge and well appreciated. Holloman AFB is our largest employer with over 13,000 military and civilian personnel.

Economic impact statements estimate the base contributes over 411 million dollars annually in job creation, payroll, and contract expenditures. The Army installation is the premier test range in the world committed to testing for governmental agencies, the Department of Defense, private entities, and foreign countries.

There are strong programs for unmanned vehicle systems, robotics, engineering, research and development, and a strong testing and training environment. These assets represent a significant presence of a highly skilled and talented workforce and make us an ideal location for aerospace, combat systems, and cutting-edge technology endeavors.

Alamogordo has the state’s highest concentration of military veterans. The workforce in Otero County is reliable and not transitory. There is a low rate of unionization, less than 5%. Service and retail trade tend to dominate the jobs available.

Tourism is a multi-million dollar industry, with nearby White Sands National Park drawing 600,000+ tourists annually.

Mountain resorts, such as Inn of the Mountain Gods in nearby Ruidoso and The Lodge at Cloudcroft, add further impact and employ over 1000 hospitality workers. A growing industry that has the potential for significant economic impact is cannabis production and sales. Why we Changed our Name

On the 21st day of April 2021, the Board of Directors of the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce voted a name change to this organization. Very often, there has been a misconception that the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce was affiliated in some way with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

In this name change, we wish to remove any doubt that the two organizations have any common goals, ideologies, or visions for the future of small business in this Nation. Our single purpose for existing is to support local businesses and help foster an environment that betters the lives of those living in our community. We believe that local businesses are the backbone of a community and when businesses thrive, the community thrives and quality of life improves for all. Our total investment is here, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, and we will survive and prosper together.
