INITIAL RESEARCH Initial Research into the Opera (Plot, Background, Themes, etc.)
CONCEPT PITCH
INITIAL SKETCHES
The eye compositions were the most successful out of all of the sketches. Staying simple was the better option.
MATERIAL STUDIES & DIGITAL SKETCHES
I wanted to use acrylic paints for my poster because I felt that acrylics could convey the grit, violence, and action of “Tosca”. I later realized that acrylic paint was even more fitting as a medium because Cavaradossi, one of the main characters, is a painter.
PROCESS
I painted all of the poster elements separately (background, eye, and the title). Afterwards, I scanned and edited the elements in Photoshop and arranged them in Illustrator and InDesign.
ADVANCED RENDERS
The layouts just weren’t working well in these ones. I tried image tracing some eyes and I experimented with using white versus black text in different areas.
This render was the blueprint for my final poster. The vertical design was working the best, but the text needed to be black and smaller overall.

My posters were turning out flat and orange-ish when printed, so I tried to edit the colors and levels using gamma correction in Photoshop. These different backgrounds reflect the different color adjustments I tried to do.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), the background still turned out orange-y and there was a loss of texture (not as severe as the advanced render prints, but still significant). I could not see any “trouble” spots in my gamma correction panel in Photoshop, so I just tried to edit the levels the best I could. Overall though, even though the texture was lost, I think the final poster still conveys hints of the grit and action in the brushstrokes.
