Pink Is the New Green Beauty products that make you feel good on the inside and out
by MARLEY HANDEL LANE
It was 2013 when mother of five, Karen Sjoberg, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Along with the battle Karen was facing, she was challenged to find beauty products that weren’t harmful to her body and the treatments she was going through. Many of us don’t think about what goes into everyday products—and yet the shampoos, shaving creams, moisturizers and makeup crammed in our bathroom cupboards are often made with toxic chemicals. Parabens, for example, extend the shelf life in these products, but they’ve also been proven to mimic estrogen, a hormone which, when given in excessive amounts, can be linked to breast cancer and skin cancer. Titanium dioxide, often used in beauty products like loose powder cosmetics, sunscreens and lotions has been linked to brain tumours—it’s a nano particle so microscopic that it can pass through your blood vessels and end up anywhere in your body.
As Sjoberg began to re-think her beauty routine, she and her sister, Tracy Olesen, came up with the idea to create products that would work for her. Many hours were spent together in the kitchen, carefully researching and thoughtfully coming up with products through trial and error. After finalizing some products, Pink House Natural Solutions was born. The name Pink House would be chosen as it represented the Vancouver house that Sjoberg, her husband, and five kids lived in; filled with pink walls, furniture, and décor. Just two years later, Sjoberg’s cancer would become terminal; she passed away in August of 2015.
Since Sjoberg’s passing, two of her daughters, Lindsay and Teagan, joined Tracey to keep Pink House going—with the whole and non-toxic ingredients that were so important to Sjoberg. The Raspberry Face Lotion, for example, is an everyday organic lotion that is infused with raspberry green tea and botanical extracts with anti-aging and anti-inflammatory qualities— with all ingredients being safe enough to eat (and apparently you are 100-percent welcome to!). Another “holy grail” item you will definitely want to get your hands on, is their Glow Sticks, a solid multi-use product that can be applied as a highlighter, blush and bronzer!
Pink House continues to value providing 100-percent natural makeup and skincare products that bring confidence into your daily beauty routine without compromising your health.
