ARMED ROBBERY REPORTED AT EMPTY KEG PARTY STORE, SUSPECT UNKNOWN Mount Pleasant Police Department officers are looking for a suspect accused of robbing the Empty Keg Party Store located at 122 E. Pickard Street on the night of Oct. 6.

According to police, the suspect is described to police as a male with a “dark complexion,” wearing a light gray hoodedsweatshirt, black basketball shorts and tan shoes, between 5-foot-8-inches and 6 feet tall.

The suspect entered the store to tell the clerk about a “disturbance” outside. After the clerk exited the store with the suspect, the suspect displayed a handgun and ordered the clerk back into the store to retrieve money from the cash register.

The suspect fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash.

Officers responded to the call shortly after 10:44 p.m., canvasing the area with assistance from a Michigan State Police K-9 unit.

Other businesses in the area were made aware of the robbery and advised to contact Isabella County Central Dispatch if anyone matching the suspect’s description came into their business.

Anyone with ROBBERY SUSPECT information that could help the ongoing investigation is encouraged to call the police department “TIP Line” at (989)779-9111.

CMU STUDENT ARRESTED FOR ATTACKING ROOMMATE WITH GOLF CLUB, POCKET KNIFE A Central Michigan University student was arrested after attacking his roommate with his fists, a golf club and a pocket knife when the roommate forgot to buy him butane to smoke marijuana with.

Rochester sophomore Nathaniel Piccinini was arrested Sept. 30 and charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony. He was also charged with delivery or manufacturing of marijuana, a four-year felony and domestic violence, a 93-day misdemeanor, according to Isabella County Trial Court records.

The incident occurred at an apartment building on South Bradley Street. Officers made contact with the injured roommate at the McLaren Central Michigan emergency room. The roommate, who is also a CMU student, said he returned home from the library to find Piccinini upset when he found out the roommate had not bought him a bottle of butane so he could smoke marijuana, according to the report from the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Piccinini followed his roommate to his room where the argument continued. The victim told officers he threw a notebook on

the floor during the argument, after which Piccinini lunged at him and started punching.

The roommate fought back, putting Piccinini in a headlock and eventually forcing him out of the room.

Piccinini returned several minutes later with a golf club and stood in the doorway swinging it at the roommate. The roommate was able to push Piccinini out of the room again and shut the door. At this time the victim’s other roommates had arrived and saw him holding his head where he had been punched, and accompanied him down to the kitchen to get ice.

The roommate and Piccinini had another confrontation in the kitchen when Piccinini threatened him with a 3.5-inch pocket knife.

The roommate ran to an adjacent bathroom and closed the door. The other roommates told officers Piccinini then stabbed the bathroom door with the knife several times.

Police found more than 8.5 ounces of marijuana in jars and Ziploc bags, as well as a set of scales in Piccinini’s bedroom.

Religion faculty member promotes inclusion, engages in activism

Religion faculty member Laurel Zwissler’s office walls are covered with students’ doodles illustrating class concepts: a man with binoculars staring at a stoplight demonstrates Foucault’s power theories, and a sink that looks like a prop from a sciencefiction movie stands as commentary on modern culture.

Zwissler tries to incorporate drawing into every course to help students think creatively.

Some of this sense of imagination might be necessary for a religions class at Central Michigan University.

Zwissler teaches her classes with a focus on inclusion and diversity, but she said it’s often difficult for students to apply those concepts in a university, like CMU, which lacks diversity. The university’s student population is 72.3 percent white, which means its environment is saturated with predominantly white perspectives.

Whether it’s advocating for a gender and sexuality center on campus or bringing together various groups to combat the roots causes of sexual assault, Zwissler brings her passion for inclusivity and social justice wherever she goes.

Zwissler encourages religious tolerance by teaching students to “cultivate a worldview of multiple worldviews.”

She noted this doesn’t mean abandoning one’s beliefs — but means learning to see the world through others’ perspectives.

Zwissler’s journey to becoming a religion scholar started when she took a western religions class during her undergraduate years at the University of Michigan.

She said she was raised to see

people with beliefs that differed from hers as “crazy and bad,” but that narrative didn’t fit her experience when she actually began interacting with people.

“That’s part of the irony, right? Everyone’s busy looking suspiciously at one another,” Zwissler said. “If you can take a breath and take step back from that, what you realize is that everybody is operating in worldviews that make sense to them.”

She said understanding world religions can contribute to understanding in other areas, including political and cultural

spheres.

Religious tolerance in Islam is an example of this, Zwissler said.

Beliefs about Islam can be colored by violent, intolerant groups like ISIS — creating even more misunderstanding of the religion.

Historically, she said Muslims have believed in tolerance for the other Abrahamic religions — Judaism and Christianity — seeing their followers as fellow “People of the Book.” As Islam spread, that idea carried over to other religions like Zoroastrianism and Hinduism. “(The idea was) it’d be great if you were Muslim because Islam’s the

best, but other religions are OK too,” Zwissler said. “And (other religions) deserve protection and respect.”

Respect is a pervasive theme in Zwissler’s classes, former students say. “(She’s) very keen about making sure everyone’s comfortable with inclusion,” said alumnus Jacob Vandenboom.

He said this inclusion shines through in Zwissler’s attention to issues, from preferred pronouns to asking students to come to her if the way any issues are discussed makes them feel excluded.

When Zwissler was hired at CMU in 2012 with degrees in religion, and women and gender studies, she felt a responsibility to become involved.

“To me, feminism and action are deeply entwined,” Zwissler said.

Winslow took two classes with Zwissler and was co-president of Students Advocating for Gender Equality, a Registered Student Organization Zwissler advises.

Winslow now works under Zwissler, transcribing interviews for religion field research.

While Zwissler helps student feminists, her own college activism was mostly focused on economic trade agreements as well as labor rights and exploitation.

The professor uses her own past of college activism to teach students effective advocacy practices, Winslow said. “(My activist community believed) governments should be responsive to people on the ground,” Zwissler said. “And if they’re not, then people on the ground have a right and obligation to make a huge ruckus.”

Winslow said she learned about activism from Zwissler in Students Advocating Gender Equality, during an activism workshop and in personal conversations.

“She (thinks), ‘I’m here to help people; it doesn’t matter if it’s my class or not,’’” Winslow said. “I appreciate that a lot.”

Zwissler still has an interest in labor rights. Winslow often comes to Zwissler with questions about how to live a life of ethical consumption.

“Seeing the way that she lives very intentionally and lets her values shine through in everything she does has been really inspiring,” Winslow said. “I’ve tried to emulate that in my own life.”

f your daily routine includes getting in your car and spending five minutes punching in different radio stations trying to find music that hasn’t been overplayed for the past six months, you have more options than simply reaching for the aux cord again.

You might have luck finding new music you enjoy taking a chance on a band you’ve never heard before performing at a local bar or apartment.

Our Oct. 4 edition featured stories from three local musicians. A repeating motif in their narratives was a dedication to their craft and hope their hard work pays off.

These students attend classes, have jobs and still make time to create music. All they need now is an audience.

“Say, they have a friend who raps or makes music. Instead of doubting them before hearing anything or ignoring events (where they’re performing), go and see them,” New Haven senior and music producer Taraj Livesay said. “You know, if one day you want to see a concert, go to where you know students are performing.”

Though popular music is a crowd-pleaser at parties and is easy to play on the aux at a moment’s notice, live, local music provides a unique experience. Venues are more intimate, local artists’ fan bases are more communal and the performances can’t be found anywhere else.

Wayside Central has hosted big names like DJ Pauly D and Waka Flocka Flame, but still provides space for up-and-coming DJs and rappers to perform. Centennial Nights at Centennial Hall, organized by Central

EDITORIAL Michigan University students, hosts local indie and folk bands and electric dance music artists.

Because of the support Centennial Nights has received, the people who organized the event were able to organize the Pleasant Town Music and Art Festival. Its creation is an example of how a small community can come together to help local musicians flourish. The festival lasted a day — which is minuscule compared to larger festivals like Electric Forest, that takes place over the course of two weekends — but it stands as proof that support for local music helps create a conducive environment for more and better art.

Small venues throughout Mount Pleasant include Rubble’s Bar, Wayside Central, Hunter’s Ale House and even some private residences host local artists weekly. Most performances boast low ticket and cover charges, while others are free. The only other price you have to pay is with your time — and who knows? You’ll probably enjoy it.

Live music at a low cost from your peers. There isn’t much better. Go out and support local music artists.

Wake up America: We are crushed by substantial student loan debt More than 44 million Americans collectively owe almost $1.5 trillion in student debt, according to CNBC. The average student loan borrower now graduates with approximately $37,172 in student loan debt. To put that in perspective, that’s more than the cost of a brand new Audi A4, the startup cost for a business, or the price of most weddings.

I am fortunate that my hard work in academics before college paid off in my receiving much-needed scholarships. I also have extremely generous parents who are willing to help me afford my college education. However, I struggle to earn enough money for tuition.

I am not alone. Many people struggle to pay or work their way through college.

In fact, roughly 70 percent of college graduates leave school with student debt, according to CNBC. College wasn’t always a bank-breaking expense. The cost of tuition has increased over 200 percent since 1988, according to CNBC. “Students at public four-year institutions paid an average of $3,190 in tuition for the 1987-1988 school year, with prices adjusted to reflect 2017 dollars.

to $9,970 for the 2017-2018 school year.

That’s a 213 percent increase.”

CNBC outlines these changes by explaining that if the child of a 1988 Harvard University graduate were to attend Harvard today, the current cost would be more than two-and-a-half times as much as it was for their parent in 1988.

According to The Washington Post, increases in tuition mostly result from changes made by state lawmakers and higher education leaders who previously benefitted from low tuition prices when they earned their college degrees.

The Post highlights that America used to view higher education as a public good supported by taxpayers. Now though, higher education is seen as a private good paid for by individuals. A transition that occurred without much public debate.

Forbes explains that not only has the

cost of college skyrocketed but wages are not increasing at even close to that rate.

“According to figures from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the average annual growth in wages was only 0.3% between January 1989 and January 2016.”

Translated, this means the cost of higher education increased nearly eight times faster than wages. With a college degree being a requirement for most employment, not going to college is a major disadvantage. However, graduating in debt isn’t a great way to kick off a career.

America has developed an “everyone for themselves” philosophy. Both in terms of education and other areas such as health care, human rights, and a living wage. This philosophy isn’t as successful as some might lead us to believe.

The proof is in the comparison to other nations that do help provide for all their citizens.

Many European countries, such as Germany, Denmark, and Finland, offer tuition-free education to university students. More than 20 countries total offer free college. Although free is a relative term because these countries typically have higher taxes which then allow them to offer additional social services.

According to College Raptor, these systems result in higher college enrollment rates, less student debt among graduates, and more successful individual employment which contributes more money back to the economy.

America needs to reform its system of responsibility for their citizens. If every citizen is supported, it will only result in a more prosperous and successful country.

If our government was reformed to allow everyone the opportunity to succeed in education, and live healthy lives with basic rights and wealth, our country could stand taller and stronger. Our citizens would be not only free but living well in that freedom.

The pursuit of happiness is listed alongside liberty in the Declaration of Independence because every single person deserves the opportunity to work for success. It is impossible to work for success with all the unnecessary challenges most citizens face. Most people have to work simply to maintain these challenges, and struggle to overcome and push past those hurdles.

America is a strong nation but could be stronger if the country supported equal opportunities in education for eveyone.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

CMU needs to address sexual assault more in order to find a solution TO THE EDITOR, American colleges have a rape problem, and that includes Central Michigan University. But before the university can address the issue, they need to stop blurring, and even hiding, the problem, to the point of protecting sexual predators.

In 2016, CMU reported in its Annual Security Report, as required by the Federal Clery Act, 18 rapes. That same year the Michigan State Police compiled Michigan Incident Crime Report stated that CMU’s Department of Public Safety reported only one case of 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and four 3rd Degree CSCs. What happened with the 13 rapes reported to Clery, but did not merit being called rapes when reporting to the State Police? Were those rapists let go to rape again? Unfortunately, the answer is “yes.”

At a public meeting a few years ago, it was explained that if someone was expelled for a sexual assault, the university did not inform the college they were transferring to that CMU was sending them a potential rapist. There is a very real possibility that they will rape again.

In the White House Council on Women and Girls report, 7 percent of college men admitted committing or attempting rape, 63 percent admitted multiple offenses, “averaging six rapes each.”

CMU has a history of hiding the threat

of sexual assault from students. Recently, CMU had sexual assault survivor Brenda Tracy on campus to speak to football and basketball players. Despite her “powerful message,” Athletics labeled her presentation “private” and refused access to the press. “When it comes to discussing sexual assault, CMU prefers to have that conversation quietly and behind closed doors, if at all.” (Secrecy is part of the problem, Central Michigan Life 9/16/18).

Tracy could have given students valuable information.

Earlier this year, CMU’s Society of Professional Journalists investigated universities’ compliance with the Federal Freedom Of Information Act. SPJ sent out FOIA requests to the Mid-American Conference asking “for all incident reports relating to sexual assault, harassment and violence, along with arrest records and its policies and guidelines when dealing with potential victims.” Of the 12 universities, CMU was the only one to outright deny the request, earning it a failing grade.

“When (information) doesn’t look so hot for (CMU), it seems that we have no problem keeping information quiet”, said Jordyn Hermani, former CM Life editorin-chief. (CMU given failing grade in transparency during SPJ FOIA, 4/13/18).

In 2015, CM Life reporter Sydney Smith asked for a list of the locations

of rapes reported on campus, not the names of the victims, not the exact addresses, only the building or resident hall where they occurred. Smith explained, “As a woman, I’d like to know where I’m safe on campus and where I’m not. If rapes were reported at Greek houses, I want to know which ones so I can avoid them.” Several FOIA requests were made and all were denied, despite the fact that police reports are public records.

Eventually, she discovered that “while request after request for this information was denied, police are required to keep a 60-day crime log available for public access. Beyond this, the information is archived.” Past crime logs, up to seven years, must be made available in two business days. It took all year, but by combing through 130 pages, she and fellow staff members were able to generate a map. (CMU Should be open about sexual assault, CM Life, 4/27/16).

In the past, CMU has had to be forced to inform students of serious threats. In 2014, the Delta Chi fraternity was suspended, reportedly for alcohol infractions.

It wasn’t until a FOIA request from CM Life was it revealed that they had been accused of sexual assaults going back 15 years. (Details of Delta Chi suspension revealed after FOIA request, CM Life 1/13/14).

“(Tom) Idema (Director of the Office of Student Conduct) said just because the group wasn’t charged with the assault doesn’t mean that an assault didn’t occur,” (No Warning, CM Life 4/20/14).

Only one person was punished, academic probation for one semester, but, despite cyber-bullying, threats and the victim and another woman having their tires slit, no further action was taken.

You can believe that CMU is safe, or you can believe that one in four college women (one in 71 men) is assaulted. Or, you can believe that it is 200-300, the number CMU’s Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates founder, Steve Thompson, says SAPA receives a year (The Red Zone CM Life, 8/23/14). Or you can believe CMU Police Chief William Yeagley, “there’s roughly a third of freshman girls who have been sexually assaulted.” (8/23/14).

Now is the time to be aware of the threat. You are most likely to be the victim of a sexual assault while you attend college and that is most likely to happen between Welcome Weekend and Thanksgiving break (known as The Red Zone).

Be safe. Remember a person who is too drunk to drive, is too drunk to legally give consent. And, most of all, don’t rape.

Redistricting ballot proposal to restrict gerrymandering PROPOSAL 18-2

One of three proposals that will appear on the Nov. 6 ballot aims to establish an independent citizens redistricting commission.

The proposal, which is backed by the group Voters Not Politicians and will appear on the ballot as Proposal 18-2, is designed to prevent gerrymandering by changing the way Michigan draws its state legislative and congressional districts.

“Gerrymandering” is the manipulation of election districts in order to give an advantage to a particular political party.

Michigan is one of 37 states where the state legislature has all the power when it comes to drawing district boundaries. This means that if any one party were in control of the state legislature, which is the case now with the Republicans currently holding the majority, then that party has complete control of how district lines are drawn across the entire state.

If passed, this proposal would be a constitutional amendment for the state of Michigan. It would establish a new redistricting criteria where districts

couldn’t give any advantages to any one political party or candidate.

The proposal would create a commission of 13 registered voters consisting of four self-proclaimed democrats, four self-proclaimed republicans and five who self-identify as independent. Any partisan officeholders or candidates and anyone closely associated with them, would be prohibited from serving on the commission.

Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the proposal in June and ordered the Board of Canvassers to put the proposal on November’s ballot.

The proposal was met with opposition from Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Constitution, who argue that the proposal does more than just amend Michigan’s constitution. The organization is funded mostly by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, a corporate lobbying and advocacy group, and is not necessarily led by everyday voters.

A proposed constitutional amendment to establish a commission of citizens with exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress, every 10 years. Alcohol violations down since 2016, according to annual safety report

Incidents of unlawful drinking on Central Michigan University’s campus saw a substantial decrease between the years of 2017 and 2016, according to the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report released on Oct. 1.

The number of Liquor Law Violations Referred for Disciplinary Action fell from 783 in 2016 to 543 in 2017, and Liquor Law Arrests fell from 172 to 98.

CMU Police Department Lt. Cameron Wassman said a number of factors can go into such a drastic decrease in violations, including stricter enforcement and adherence to the laws prohibiting underage drinking.

Other factors could include the type of season the football team is having, and how the resulting parties can cause a spike in alcohol-related activity. Wassman cites that in 2017, the football game accompanying “Western Weekend” was an away game, as opposed to 2016, when it was played at Kelly/ Shorts Stadium.

“If we were to look back to 2012, we’d see that when Michigan State (University) played here, we had a big increase in alcohol violations,” Wassman said. “The kind of events that happen also dictates how much enforcement action there is in those categories.”

The amount of rape incidents reported to the police department also decreased from 2016. There were a total of 14 cases of rape in 2017 — five on-campus, four on non-campus property and five on public property.

Crimes are categorized by whether they happened on-campus — such as in the residence halls— or on “public property” or “non-campus” areas.

“Non-campus” refers to areas outside of what is considered CMU’s property, though are still under the university’s jurisdiction, such as Greek houses.

Wassman said the guidelines for what

is considered public property are “kind of vague,” though generally refer to the “ring” of properties surrounding campus, such as those on Bellows Street and Deerfield Road.

Originally signed in 1990, the “Clery Act” is a federal statute that requires all colleges and universities receiving federal aid to publish to annually record and publish a comprehensive list of campus crime statistics.

It was put in place after Jeanne Clery, a student at Lehigh University was raped and murdered in her dorm in 1986.

Wassman said the annual report serves two main purposes to the campus community: letting the campus community know how prevalent certain serious crimes are at the university, and to provide instructions “By disclosing important information, whether that’s crime statistics or policy statements, it serves to keep the community safe,” Wassman said. “It helps students, faculty and staff know what the police and university are doing when it comes to crime, sexual misconduct and things of that sort.”

Chinese International student reflects on adjusting to life in Michigan

Acclimating to a new environment is one of the most difficult challenges a person can experience. International students face one of the most extreme versions of this change. The challenges they face outside the classroom are different than those that domestic students have an easier time with, like meeting friends or finding new hobbies.

Hohhot, China senior Qi Zhou knows this struggle firsthand. From how Americans learn, research and socialize — society behaves differently in China than in the U.S. Zhou arrived in Mount Pleasant three years ago, timid and unsure of what to expect. He had visited the U.S. before, to see Chicago and New York, but his first time settling down in the western world was at Central Michigan University.

What has been the most difficult challenge in attending CMU?

Zhou: I think the language barrier has been the hardest part. Before I came to CMU everything in my life was based off the Chinese language.

Everything I’ve known was expressed through the Chinese language, so

when I first came to CMU it was very challenging to catch up to speed with all my peers.

Sometimes I accidentally speak Chinese instead of English. I remember one time my first year here I was talking with my roommate and I just started speaking Chinese to him without thinking about it. While my English is much better now than it was when I first arrived at CMU, I still struggle to share my ideas due to language barriers.

What do you do to help accommodate for language barriers?

I try to make more American friends, attend more events on campus and watch more American entertainment. My job working at RFoC and Fresh has been a huge help in helping me become familiar with how my peers converse.

What are some differences and similarities between living in Hohhot, China and Mount Pleasant, Michigan?

The main differences would be how people socialize. In China people

do not go out to the bars like they do at CMU. Alcohol is not nearly as prevalent in China as it is in America.

We do more indoor activities such as going to the movies or getting a bite to eat somewhere. I would say that arcades or computer rooms are basically our version of people going to the bar.

“League of Legends” is currently one of the most popular games in China, where the world championships start Oct. 1 in South Korea. It’s a huge deal for whatever nation wins the championship, as they get bragging rights for the year. Oh, and almost nobody our age drives in China.

For similarities, the most common behavioral trait between Americans and Chinese is our heavy influence by smartphones. Everyone uses their smartphone constantly. Social media and digital media have just as large an impact in China as it does here.

We use WeChat, which is basically WhatsApp and an instant messaging app called Tencent QQ, mainly.

What’s the one thing that caught your eye the most after you got comfortable in your

daily routine at CMU? How people talk about the government here. In China, we have restrictions on what we can say about our government. We have some freedom, but it’s all restricted unless you are in private. I remember one time my teacher in China was about to discuss something about our government and before he did so, he looked out into the hallway, shut the door, closed the blinds and then he started speaking once he knew we were in private. It astonishes me to hear people speak confidently about how they dislike President Trump. That would not go over well in China.

Finally, what do you enjoy most about being a CMU student?

I’ve tried so many new things that I never tried in China. Going to football games, kayaking and going for long drives at night are among numerous activities I’ve never done while in China. It does get too cold sometimes here in the winter, but that would be one of my only complaints about my time as a student at CMU.

Sexual misconduct happens in ways large and small; the women at CMU must demand that it stop

A

s a woman at Central Michigan University, I can say on more than one occasion I’ve felt uncomfortable or harassed by men.

Many of us feel that way. Because it happens so frequently, we don’t often share our stories of harassment and sometimes, assault.

These are my experiences as a woman and college student.

As a 20 year old, I have been made to feel like I “owe” a guy something.

When I’ve walked down the street or into a store, I’ve felt eyes staring through me. This summer during my internship, I did an interview with a source who was an older man, who was more interested in asking about my personal life than about the story.

When women are at a party with our friends, or at a concert, we expect the uncomfortable moment to come when a guy comes up behind us and feels like its OK to invade our space or touch us. At a recent concert, I was holding onto my boyfriend, when a guy proceeded to walk up, see me with him, and still harassed me.

Men touch you without your consent.

They think it’s OK to proposition you, a total stranger.

As we began to discuss our coverage this week, a few other women at Central Michigan Life shared their uncomfortable experiences.

These are their experiences: Groped in line at an amusement park A man followed her around at a party and continually flirted with her and her three roommates after they expressed they were not interested Whistled at walking alone at night by a group of intoxicated men Groped underwater while swimming in a lake These offenses are big and small. They are all inappropriate. These behaviors make women feel extremely uncomfortable.

its OK when they find someone attractive to stare at them like a piece of meat.

It’s diminishing. It’s uncomfortable.

It’s not OK. But women deal with it.

Every. Single. Day. Women can say “No” at any point — in bed, on the street, anywhere. Men need to understand and respect that. As our generation changes into more of a “hookup” culture and less of a relationship-driven one, men need to understand that not all women are comfortable with being treated like a “hookup.”

This is not unique to CMU. This is part of life being a female student on a college campus.

We shouldn’t have to wait to talk about these things – consent, decency, respect – until someone gets sexually assaulted.

Every year, at least two women come to the CM Life office to tell us about being sexually harassed or assaulted on this campus. Last year, we heard the stories of two women who had date-rape drugs put in their drinks when they were out at local bars and at parties.

Not every one of these stories is published, not all survivors want to share their stories. Many women simply don’t feel comfortable coming forward. That’s why talking about this as a openly and honestly as possible is so important.

Men, we know you’re not terrible.

We know that most of you are good people. We also know some of this behavior might be youth and inexperience, but the decisions you make toward women can live on with us, forever.

You are not entitled to our bodies.

You’re not entitled to touch us.

You are not entitled to say lewd things to us.

At CMU, we need more education on how to respect each other. We need more than one presentation, No Zebras, which is geared toward freshmen.

Education will lead to action and solution.

We need to stop accepting these offenses aimed at women as the “norm” and call them out for what they really are — inappropriate and unacceptable.

It’s time for a change.

pril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Central Michigan University, but by the time speakers arrive on campus and education efforts begin, a number of students will already have been sexually assaulted.

According to Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN), more than 50 percent of college sexual assaults occur in either August, September, October or November, shortly after the fall semester begins. This dangerous time period is known as the “red zone.”

This time, when many young adults are finding themselves without adult supervision, maybe for the first time in their life, is a time when there is increased partying, alcohol consumption, the meeting of new people and other circumstantial events that can increase students risks of being sexually assaulted.

College-aged victims of sexual violence often don’t report the incidents to law enforcement, according to RAINN, making it almost impossible to total the number of assaults in the area. Add to that the difficultly of obtaining information about those sexual assaults and it makes it harder to paint an accurate picture of what is happening in regards to sexual assault on CMU’s campus.

CMU learned of a recent sexual assault incident on Thursday, Oct. 4. At about 4 p.m. on Oct. 5, CMU sent out an email to all students, faculty and staff notifying them the incident had occurred on campus.

The sexual assault is said to have taken place Sept. 17 between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. near the large rock between Brooks Hall, Music Building and Park Library. The email stated a man approached a student, asked about a music festival and then assaulted her.

The email notice was a surprise and was an unusual response by the university.

When CMU’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the university last semester asking for policies and incident reports regarding campus sexual assaults, they were outright denied, citing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records

and frequently cited by CMU when it denies records requests.

According to the October 2018 Annual Fire and Safety report – CMU’s report that fulfills the Cleary Act requirements – there were 14 total rape incidents between on and off-campus locations in 2017. That’s down from 18 incidents in 2016.

On a campus of 18,000 students that is less that two assaults per month during the academic calendar year, according to the university’s numbers. But according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 20 to 25 percent of college women and 15 percent of college men are victims of forced sex during their time in college, while more than 90 percent of sexual assault victims on college campuses do not report the assault.

If students aren’t coming forward about their experiences, people should ask them if they trust their administration, said Annie Clark, civil rights activist and co-founder of End Rape On Campus (EROC).

“If they don’t trust the administration they’re not going to come forward,” Clark said.

EROC’s mission is to end campus sexual violence through direct support for survivors and their communities, prevention through education and policy reform at the campus, local, state, and federal levels.

“Students know they have the right to report and what we’re actually seeing now is numbers go up,” Clark said. “Often times administrators or parents, or potential students, see that as a bad sign when in reality, those numbers that are higher more accurately reflect what’s going on, on a college campus.”

Clark, a sexual assault survivor, led a nationwide campaign forcing universities around the country to address sexual assault more aggressively, inspiring the 2015 CNN Films documentary, “The Hunting Ground.”

While she has watched the American attitude about sexual assault shift toward supporting survivors since the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter issued by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights demanding universities uphold federal policies, she said she believes we still live in a victim-blaming society. While uplifting and changing deeply-rooted American w RESOURCES | 14

ideas about sexual violence might still require decades of advocacy from people like Clark, it might be important to understand how to navigate the system and resources put in place by your university in the meantime.

Whether a survivor of sexual violence chooses to make their incident public or not is an individual decision, but the responsibility of a university to address the needs of that survivor are required.

WHAT IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AND WHO IS AT RISK? Sexual assault, as defined by CMU, is “touching of a sexual nature without consent.” It encompasses a wide range of acts. It includes sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, domestic violence and stalking.

According to the National Institute of Justice, a development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, college freshman and sophomore students are at higher risk for a sexual assault. More than half of sexual assaults take place on weekends and more than half of those occur between midnight and 6 a.m., according to NIJ. CMU Police Lt. Larry Klaus said students have a lot to deal with – classes, homework, jobs, finances, maintaining a social life and wellbeing. The added trauma of an sexual assault can push students past their breaking point. According to Mental Health America, people who experience sexual assault are at an increased risk of developing depression, PTSD, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse disorders.

It’s important that all students – especially those supporting sexual assault survivors – understand what resources are in place at CMU that can help you.

TITLE IX: WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE SEXUALLY ASSAULTED All schools that receive federal funding in the U.S. are required to follow Title IX, a civil rights law that ensures equal education access for all students and prohibits gender discrimination.

“When a student has experienced a hostile environment such as sexual assault or severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive sexual harassment, schools must stop the discrimination, prevent its re-

The Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity (OCRIE) at CMU, which includes the Title IX office, is located in the Bovee University Center, room 306. The OCRIE office is where a student would need to go to in order to file a report with the university and receive advice regarding the policies and procedures. It also acts as a place of resolution for complaints of discrimination. CMU has its own set of guidelines, the sexual misconduct policy, that it follows for carrying out these policies and procedures.

Title IX protects against discrimination regardless of whether the incident occurs on campus or not, and even when the people involved are not students. However, if the person accused of violating the policy – the respondent – is not affiliated with the university, reporting with a police department would be a better option than carrying out an investigation with the school, said Katherine Lasher, CMU’s Title IX coordinator and executive director of OCRIE. “The university can only make decisions with respect to the individuals that are students here or who are working here,” Lasher said.

Lasher receives the reports of sexual misconduct and is therefore a resource to every CMU student.

“We want to ensure that everyone has an understanding of what’s available to them so that they are empowered to make the decisions and can decide for themselves what’s going to be the best course for them,” Lasher said.

If a student wishes to speak with someone in the Title IX office they can call, email or utilize CMU’s online reporting tool.

However Lasher said the most effective way is to set up an appointment to ensure someone will be available to talk. During the initial meeting, a student will be given resources, options and ways to seek help and only when a student decides to go through the school’s investigative process, would he or she have to explain their personal experience.

“Our goal is only for the survivor to have to tell their story one time,” Lasher said.

According to a survey conducted in the 2015-16 academic year by Mary Senter, CMU faculty member and director of the Center for Applied Research and Rural Studies, 76 percent of students surveyed did not know where the OCRIE office was located and only

CENTRAL MICHIGAN LIFE | CM-LIFE.COM | OCT. 8, 2018 18 percent knew how to contact the Title IX coordinator. For the survey, the Office of Information Technology drew a random sample of about 4,750 undergraduates, who were enrolled on the Mount Pleasant campus in Fall 2015.

In addition to OCRIE, there are other confidential and non-confidential resources on and off campus that students and community members can seek out. If a student wishes to keep their experience private, they would not want to report to a non-confidential source, who may have an obligation to relay the information.

According to CMU’s sexual misconduct policy, all CMU staff, faculty, and student employees are required to report any information they know about possible sexual misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator. The exceptions are people employed directly by confidential resources or employed as journalists at CMU. Other exceptions include details shared during class discussion or during public demonstration nights, such as Take Back the Night, an annual rally event against sexual assault.

CMUPD, a non-confidential source, advises victims to stay as calm as possible if attacked and to evaluate resources. Following an attack, they suggest to get to a safe place and call the police.

In the interest of preserving evidence of the assault, CMUPD advises to not shower, bathe or change your clothes until you can receive a sexual assault forensic exam, which must be administered by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) within five days (120 hours) of the incident.

Klaus recommends that all victims of sexual assault get a SANE exam, regardless of whether they want to prosecute at that time or not. During the process, the examiner will not only collect evidence, but they will also check for STI’s, pregnancy and help provide resources, Klaus said. Once administered, the evidence is required to be maintained by the medical center by law, for up to one year.

These exams can be administered for free by trained professionals at McLaren Central Michigan Hospital at 1221 South Drive, in Mount Pleasant.

“The importance of filing a report is if there’s an offender on our campus that’s assaulting victims we want to know who that individual is, and they need to be stopped,” Klaus said.

Victims of sexual assault who

hesitate to report due to unlawful use of alcohol or drugs during the time of their assault should know that under CMU’s sexual misconduct policy, it states that the Office of Student Conduct will not pursue disciplinary action against this kind of behavior if the complaint made is a “good faith report.” The CMUPD has a practice of not pursuing these charges as well.

RESOURCES Non-confidential resources include OCRIE, CMUPD, Mount Pleasant Police Department, Isabella County Sheriff’s Department and the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police Department.

Confidential resources include Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates, CMU Student Health Services and hospitals.

“There’s a lot of support throughout this campus and we want to see our survivors recover and we want to see our students be successful,” Klaus said.

Within the CMUPD there is a special-victims-investigationcadre made up of officers and detectives, who are trained to “better respond and work with survivors of sexual assault, dating domestic violence, and stalking.”

They take a victim-centered approach where the goal is to help each survivor get “back on track and find advocates to help them navigate the university system.”

“When we’re working with survivors we tell them, ‘it’s not your fault and we believe you,’” Klaus said.

CMUPD likes to give survivors a few sleep cycles to process any trauma before proceeding with interviews, Klaus said.

SAPA is a 24/7 survivor-centered, paraprofessional student organization that offers services that include a confidential support line, online chats and direct in-person services, throughout the fall and spring semesters.

Members of SAPA help provide survivors with a step-by-step explanation of all of the options they have, from counseling referrals to medical and law enforcement assistance.

“Sometimes it just depends on how long people want to talk – but to really explain what each step would look like so that they’re making the best decision with most information that they can get and what it would look like,” said Brooke Oliver-Hempenstall, director of Sexual Aggression Services.

On average, SAPA receives six contacts, or people who utilize their services, per week through-

out the school year. Oliver-Hempenstall said during the fall there is a slight increase in contacts.

While it coincides with the “red zone,” she attributes this increase in interest to new and returning students who are either discovering resources like SAPA for the first time or are utilizing resources based on trauma that was experienced during the summer.

She also said that many students come to CMU with no prior knowledge of what sexual assault is and at the same time that are finding out what is, they are realizing they have been victims of it in the past.

Oliver-Hempenstall, Klaus and Clark all agree that sexual violence education needs to happen long before coming to college.

“If we’re starting to talk about sexual violence in first-year orientation it’s way way too late,” Clark said.

SAPA is responsible for several educational outreach programs including No Zebras, No Excuses, a mandatory performance-based training during freshman and transfer orientation; education for student groups, fraternities and sororities, university organizations and sports teams; and events like ice skating and yoga to get the heavy topic of sexual assault in front of all audiences.

“We try to do things that are yes informative and educational, but then we just want folks to know that we are here and that you know how to reach us,” OliverHempenstall said.

In addition to on-campus resources, Listening Ear Crisis Center is a private, non-profit based in Mount Pleasant that can offer support and advocacy.

When asked about how these resources are making students feel comfortable about coming forward and seeking help, Oliver-Hempenstall said she believes that the simple fact of the university supporting resources like SAPA shows that the institution is willing to have these conversations.

“Stuff is happening at all schools around the nation,” she said. “I appreciate the fact that CMU is comfortable having these conversations, having these supports so that folks who – whether they want to disclose and report to the authorities, to the school to investigate, for counseling – that they’ve provided the options and I think that it helps folks feel more comfortable perhaps in reporting because they know that they’re supported in doing so.”

CMU FLUTE FESTIVAL TO TAKE PLACE OCT. 14

ADMINISTRATORS TO ADDRESS COUNSELING CENTER IMPROVEMENT AT NEXT SGA MEETING Students can learn more about how Counseling Services and the Office of Student Affairs are working together at the upcoming Central Michigan University Student Government Association general meeting.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium.

Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Anthony Voisin and Interim Director of the Counseling Services Melissa Hutchinson are guest speakers who will discuss the improvements that have been made to the Counseling Center, as well as future plans.

Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer A.T. Miller is also an invited guest speaker at the upcoming meeting to introduce himself to SGA and the student body.

“Dr. Miller is the first Chief Diversity Officer at CMU, so students may not know who he is and his responsibilities for the student

body and CMU,” said SGA Press Secretary Nick Latuszek. “The student body is strongly encouraged to attend our next General Board meeting to listen to these three influential individuals on their initiatives that would positively affect the student body.”

There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions after the speaker presentations.

The student body is always welcome and encouraged to attend any General Board meetings, Latuszek said.

SGA meets at 7 p.m. Mondays in the Bovee University Center Auditorium.

Meetings are free to attend, but students must bring their CMU Global ID cards to check in prior to entering.

The Central Michigan University Flute Festival only happens every three to four years. This year, it will be on Oct. 14.

The Flute Festival attempts to bring together the Mount Pleasant community. It will include lectures and live performances.

The CMU Flute Choir will perform. School of Music faculty member Joanna White has worked at CMU for 32 years and started the CMU flute choir. The Flute Choir is open to students and community members.

The Flute Festival has opened registration for the CMU Flute Choir on CMU’s School of Music website. Anyone can sign up to perform with the choir. After registering, participants will be given sheet music to practice, an event schedule and detailed information about the event.

White asks that participants know how to play the flute and can read music.

Participants will be asked to rehearse at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the Music Building. The performance will be at 3 p.m. in Staples Concert Hall.

“I started doing flute concerts last Spring and the first show had 50 people sign up to play,” White said. “We are hoping for a bigger turnout for this event.”

by Nicolas Real, a Venezuelan flutist, teacher, composer, and conductor. Real earned his master’s degree at CMU. Those participating in the CMU Flute Choir will have an opportunity to be conducted by him.

“He is a very dynamic player,” White said.

The concert will also include a crescent duo with Joanna and Kennen White. Music faculty member Zhao Wang will be the pianist for the event. Conductors will be Joanna White, Gail Green and Nicolas Real.

The concert is open to the public. Pricing is $3 for students and $5 for non-students.

There will also be music vendors open throughout the event for the public to peruse.

Football dismantled by Buffalo 34-24 on Homecoming

Trailing 24-17 to start the fourth quarter, Tommy Lazzaro’s pass was intercepted.

On the next Central Michigan drive, he was intercepted again.

Lazzaro’s pass fell between three defenders and into the arms of receiver Jamil Sabbagh. But the junior was unable to handle the ball and it was intercepted by Joey Banks.

The CMU offensive struggles were plentiful and went much further than Sabbagh’s mistake – wide receiver JaCorey Sullivan dropped a simple pass, Lazzaro overthrew an open Julian Hicks on a potential 40-yard completion and running back Jonathan Ward gained just nine yards.

It was those type of self-inflicted mistakes that Central Michigan football coach John Bonamego said forced the Chippewas (1-5, 0-2 MAC) into a 34-24 loss to Buffalo on Oct. 6 at Kelly/ Shorts Stadium.

ball today," Bonamego said.

"We turned the ball over. We didn't tackle. We had penalties. We beat ourselves. Nobody's happy. I don't expect anybody to be happy. I don't expect anyone that follows this team to be happy, and I'm not happy."

After Lazzaro’s first pass of the fourth was intercepted by Buffalo cornerback Cameron Lewis, running back Jaret Patterson broke around the right side of the field for a 14yard touchdown to put the Bulls (5-1) ahead, 31-17.

The next interception thrown by Lazzaro resulted in a 27-yard field goal from Adam Mitcheson, giving Buffalo a 34-17 edge.

Patterson carried the ball 18 times for 121 yards and a touchdown, but the most impressive run-game effort came from Kevin Marks.

He went for 167 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the 10-point win.

"We didn't tackle well enough," Bonamego said.

"It's not a tackle until the guy is on the ground. The majority of (runs) came after contact."

ATHLETICS PARTNERS WITH PNC BANK FOR MONTHLY STUDENT ATHLETE RECOGNITION Central Michigan University Athletics and PNC Bank have partnered to develop a monthly achievement for student athlete recognition. The first two recipients are football’s Brandon Childress and women’s basketball’s Reyna Frost.

The PNC Achievers Student Athlete of the Month award will be given to one male and one female athlete each month during the 2018-19 season.

Childress and Frost are the award recipients for September.

According to a press release, the award is given to students “for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in their athletic

endeavors.”

Frost helped the women’s basketball team to a record-breaking season last year, which ended with a loss to Oregon in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament in Spokane, Washington.

Now a senior, Frost leads the Chippewas into the 2018-19 season on Nov. 1.

Childress is one of the only returning starters in the football team’s receiving core.

Buffalo quickly responded to Tice’s initial field goal with 7:37 remaining in the first quarter, as quarterback Tyree Jackson tossed up a pass for Tyler Mabry in the right corner of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown.

Even though Jackson fashioned his arm on multiple occasions in the first half, he decided to take the ball into the end zone himself for a 14-3 edge nearing the 7-minute remaining mark in the second half.

Jackson finished the game 10-of-20 through the air for 127 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

A field goal from Mitcheson from 26 yards out made it 17-3 at halftime.

In an attempt to elude pressure from CMU defensive tackle Nathan BrissonFast, Jackson threw the ball up into the end zone. The incoherent toss resulted in an interception from CMU cornerback Sean Bunting – his second-straight game with a pick.

suing CMU offensive drive, Lazzaro picked up 30-yards on a scramble. Six plays later, the quarterback went again for 13 yards into the red zone.

The scoring opportunity was one the Chippewas executed.

Third-string running back Romello Ross was provided an opening by center Steve Eipper and guard Shakir Carr and exploded through the line for a 10-yard rushing touchdown. The third quarter score cut the CMU deficit to 17-10, but Buffalo quickly responded.

“There’s only one ball,” Bonamego said. “We have a lot of good backs, but we need to stop jumping offsides on first down. We have to stop dropping passes. We need to block better.”

Ward, the starting running back, did not play much in the second half. Bonamego said he is unsure if the junior is injured or not.

Going untouched, Marks went 70 yards for six points.

Following the point-after attempt, the Bulls controlled a 24-10 edge with 5:08 remaining in the third.

Again, the Chippewas answered.

Lazzaro dropped back in the pocket to find wide receiver JaCorey Sullivan in the back of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown, cutting Buffalo’s lead to seven points.

In his third-start, Lazzaro threw four interceptions. He was 9-of-23 passing for 117 yards and one touchdown.

The most impressive aspect of his game against Buffalo was the 105 yards he accumulated on the ground.

Buffalo tacked on another 10 points off two turnovers to take a 34-17 lead in MAC play.

Central Michigan added a final touchdown on a nine-yard pass from backup quarterback Tony Poljan to Hicks, but Buffalo controlled the game for a 34-24 victory.

With the loss, the Chippewas dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference action.

“The only way I know how to make things right is go back to work the next day,” Bonamego said. “I have to do better. That’s what we are going to do.”

Linebacker Briones uses personal losses to fuel performance

Throughout his childhood, Alex Briones could usually be found in the backyard training with Derrick Briones.

Four years younger than Derrick, Alex grew up as a quarterback and spent hours refining his football game with his older brother, who just so happened to be a wide receiver.

Derrick would come home from high school and hang out with Alex as a brother and best friend. In return, Alex attended all of his football games at Ishpeming High School, closely watching his every move.

“I looked up to him a lot,” Alex said.

“I wanted to be just like him.”

On Feb. 24, 2011, Derrick died at age of 18. Throughout his journey to becoming a starting linebacker for Central Michigan University, Alex lost three loved ones.

Daniel Olson, Alex’s predecessor at quarterback, friend of Derrick and son of Ishpeming head coach Jeff Olson, committed suicide in 2012 at 19 years old. Marcus Antilla, 19, died from hypothermia in 2017. He was Alex’s top wide receiver at Ishpeming.

Alex said he doesn’t play Division I football for himself. He takes the field every Saturday for Derrick Briones, Daniel Olson and Marcus Antilla.

He has a story to share – one of devastation, hope and determination.

It was fourth down and inches in the 2012 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 7 football state championship at Ford Field.

Ishpeming held a 20-14 lead over Detroit Loyola with only minutes left in the game.

A failed first down conversion would give Loyola the football 19 yards away from the end zone, a punt would give the Bulldogs the ball near midfield, and a first down would secure the state title for Ishpeming.

Alex, the junior quarterback, was staring down now-Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Malik McDowell on the Detroit Loyola defensive line. He only needed an inch for a first down.

Alex received the ball and plunged up the middle.

He bulldozed through McDowell for the first down, and Ishpeming won the state championship for the first time in Olson’s 21 years of coaching the Hematites.

Olson fell to his knees and cried.

Four months before the state championship game, his son Daniel committed suicide on July 19, 2012.

When Daniel was a junior in 2010, he was unable to capture a state title for his father – losing 28-26 to Hudson High School in the finale after winning the first 12 games of the season.

All Daniel wanted was for his father to win a state title. Alex made sure his wish came true – twice.

“We had a picnic before team camp started to be together,” Alex said.

“The whole team agreed the season would be for Daniel. We kept it going, supported our coach and won the state championship.”

Daniel’s father was officially a state champion, 127 days following his son’s death.

Jeff Olson remembers the 2012 championship vividly, recanting moments where it felt as if there was an extra set of hands on the team throughout the game.

Being named to the Detroit Free Press All-State football team in 2010 as a junior quarterback, Daniel was an influence in the life of Alex, who was just a freshman when Daniel was a senior at Ishpeming in 2011.

Despite their age difference, Daniel made it a priority to prepare Alex to take over under center for his father following his departure to play football at St. Norbert’s College.

Alex, as a senior in 2013, guided

Ishpeming to a 22-12 defeat of Detroit Loyola to repeat as MHSAA Division 7 state champions.

In the 2013 state title, Alex connected with Antilla, a junior tight end, for the first touchdown of the game. It was a 17-yard score with 8:45 to play in the first quarter. He later completed a two-point conversion to Antilla, giving Ishpeming a 22-0 edge early in the third.

“We were just some kids from the Upper Peninsula,” Briones said. “Our nose tackle was a 5-foot-8, 175-pound wrestler. We were some grinders. I threw (Antilla) that touchdown, and he made some other plays. I have great memories of that kid.”

While gearing up for his junior season of Division I football at Central Michigan, Alex was told by family and friends that Antilla died from hypothermia while searching for firewood on a hiking trip in the Rocking Chair Lakes area of the Upper Peninsula on April 29, 2017.

Facing the third passing of a loved one in only six years, Alex was devastated.

His brother Derrick’s death in 2011 affected Alex the most. Even though Derrick was a senior when Alex was in eighth-grade, the eldest Briones knew of his younger brother’s football talent.

“My brother is going to be way better than me,” Derrick would tell family, friends and high school coaches.

In eighth grade, Alex was working out with all the older kids. Derrick’s plan all along was to push his brother, making him the best Briones on the gridiron.

“Shit, he was like a big dog,” Alex said. “We’ve had a lot of good memories.Watching him was so fun because I looked up to him. I knew I wanted to be just like him.”

Alex, who declined to explain his brother’s cause of death, has been without Derrick for seven years, knowing he will never see him again.

At first, Alex said he was mad at God. Then, he was mad at everyone else.

He still opens his eyes every morning and thinks of his brother.

Heading into practice or workouts, some days are more difficult than others. Alex and the other football players are told to drop everything at the door to focus.

Sometimes, all Alex wants to do is lay in bed and cry.

“If you’re having a bad day, that’s going to affect practice,” Alex said. “I feel like sometimes the coaches don’t understand that. Mental illness should be taken seriously. I have my own

problems because of it.”

From the outside looking in, people expect football players like Alex to be tough.

“Alex and I went through a lot, but adversity builds strength,” Jeff Olson said. “That doesn’t mean you’re not hurting inside, and that’s a constant. We have to deal with our losses every day.”

Jeff Olson went back and forth with himself – to coach or not to coach? Thirty-six days after the death of Daniel, he took the field for the Hematites. His team earned a 34-0 victory over Iron Mountain High School to open the 2012 season with Alex under center.

The entire 2012 season was dedicated to Daniel and Derrick, and the team created the “Do It For Daniel and Derrick” slogan.

Alex does not often talk to his college teammates about Derrick, Daniel or Marcus. Some players know nothing about what Alex has been through, and Central Michigan coach John Bonamego only knows minor details.

Journeying from losing Derrick and Daniel to playing Division I football as an under recruited prospect from the Upper Peninsula, Alex persevered.

He was granted his only Division I offer from Central Michigan on Dec. 19, 2013 and committed on the spot.

“Damn, I’ve got to take that,” Alex said he remembers thinking.

Central Michigan’s previous coach, Dan Enos, recruited Alex as a quarterback. Once Bonamego became the head coach in 2015, the 6-foot-2, 228-pound athlete made the switch to linebacker.

Before his CMU career is over, Alex hopes to get one drive at quarterback – just like the old days with Derrick in the backyard. He wears the No. 17 jersey, just like Derrick did for the Hematites.

Prior to each game, Alex prays to God. No longer out of anger, but thankfulness for every opportunity to wake up and live. When he takes the field, he often feels an extra boost from Derrick, Daniel and Marcus.

If there is one thing Alex understands after losing so many people close to him, it’s that life is precious. Hope helped him hold on, and determination continues to keep him going.

“I have to live the rest of my life without seeing my older brother,” Alex said. “I’m playing football, and he’s never going to be at the stadium to watch me. I’ve lost all these people, but I’m still here. I play for them.”
