Nathan: It’s cool that even as freshman we can get the publicity of Team of the Week. We’re the IM team from our hall (Larzelere) and we’re not all soccer trained so we’re just in it to have fun, it’s so cool that we got this far in Team of the Week!

What has been your favorite team moment so far?

Nathan: Well, we haven’t won yet but it doesn’t matter! Our game last week we played against another team full of freshman and we were all just fooling around having a good time, it’s really fun. I had actually forgotten I was playing soccer at one point, that’s how fun it was…

“...we’re just in it to have fun.”

What are some of the challenges for your team?

Nathan: Other than winning and scoring? (laughs) Nothing really, we’re all pretty close considering we all live in the same little proximity. It’s all pretty good, we have a great time.

Anything to say to the team?

We’ve got a game today (Tuesday) so hopefully we’ll get a win… and I’m glad to be their captain.

Clinton campaigns, focuses on improving higher education cost

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would improve higher education in America according to her husband, 42nd President Bill Clinton, who campaigned for her Monday, Sept. 3 in Saginaw.

About 200 people filled the atrium of The Dow Event Center and watched Clinton talk about the democratic nominees’ plans to focus on building infrastructure and increase access to voting. Clinton also stopped to campaign in Flint later on Monday.

Not many young adults were in the crowd, but Central Michigan University senior Emily Rambo made the trip to Saginaw to watch Clinton speak.

“I’ve always wanted to attend a rally,” Rambo said.

“I hope he addresses the environment and issues in Flint.

He has a big support base.”

Clinton touched briefly on green energy, saying Hillary had plans to add solar panels as part of her goal to improve sustainable infrastructure. He also said she hopes to lower taxes in areas like Flint.

Before Clinton took the stage at 1 p.m., members of the Board of Education, and Congressman Dan Kildee, D-Fifth District, pledged their support for Hillary Clinton.

“It’s time to celebrate our diversity and work together to make Michigan what it needs to be,” said John Austin, president of the state board of education.

Those who spoke before Clinton urged people in the audience to vote in elections beyond the presidency to support democrats in all levels of government.

“Anyone sitting this out, they are falling for Trump trickery,” said State Rep. Van-

essa Guerra, D-Bridgeport.

As soon as Clinton took the stage, he commended President Barack Obama’s time in office, despite how unwilling congress has been in working with him.

“We need to return to broadly shared prosperity and you’ve got to have plans to do that,” Clinton said.

Melissa Rapp, a junior at Delta College, skipped class to come to the rally. She was impressed with how detailed the former president’s speech was on policy.

“It was very interesting and more in depth than (televised debates) with statistics and an actual plan,” the 20-year-old Bay City resident said.

Clinton also critiqued the election debates during conventions, and the performance of Donald Trump.

There was a clear difference in “policy, principle and preparedness,” he said, between Hillary and her running mate in the presidential debate on Sept. 26.

“The most remarkable thing that happened at the Democratic Convention was that Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton agreed on an education and training plan,” Clinton said.

Part of the plan, Clinton said, is offering free tuition at all public universities for families with an income of $125,000 or less, free tuition at community colleges for everyone, reducing college debt, and increasing access to affordable skilled trade training.

One way Hillary plans on making college more affordable is by increasing work study and Pell Grants, Clinton said.

“One of the great scandals of American life is that the only debt you can’t refinance is college debt,” Clinton said.

“Nobody can justify it.”

The difference between the option for middle-aged individuals to refinance mortgages at a lower rate than young students is unfair, Clinton said.

Young people’s lives would also improve from criminal justice reform if Hillary is nominated, he said.

“We need criminal justice reform in this country,” Clinton said. “It’s crazy to keep young people in prison for nonviolent offenses.”

Clinton urged people in the audience to register to vote and tell their friends to do the same before the Oct. 11 deadline in Michigan.

“It’s important to elect a president who will put people on the Supreme Court who will expand voting rights,” Clinton said.

He added that in Michigan gun rights are controversial, but Hillary supports “common sense gun laws.”

“I know it’s controversial in Michigan, but that’s the only place in the world it’s controversial,” Clinton said. “Hillary doesn’t want anybody’s guns.

ing a gun who shouldn’t in the first place.”

Clinton said his wife’s supporters are the ones who have worked with her longest and know her best. He said the result of the election will be

extremely different depending on which nominee wins the election.

“You are going to get change, the question is what kind of change you’re going to get.”

Program Board spends $65,000 on talent for comedy show get students excited about the upcoming school year.

“At the end of the day, we wanted to find a way to give back to the students,” Brown said.

“Sometimes you’ve got to do what’s in the best interest of the students.”

Last year, Program Board initially planned to showcase headliner Nick Swardson in McGuirk Arena, but was moved to the Plachta Auditorium the day of the event due to low ticket sales.

In 2014, Program Board was forced to give away tickets to see Ludacris at McGuirk Arena due to low ticket sales.

The Back to School Comedy Jam tickets being free isn’t related to the recent history of low-selling tickets. The goal for Program Board, he said, is to bring topnotch entertainment to campus for an affordable price.

This year’s Program Board budget is one of the highest in the country, and Brown believes it’s important to put on shows such as the Back to School Comedy Jam. “We’ve got a great organization structure where the students really talk to them. They work hard to put those things in fruition,” Brown said.

This was Nicole Hengesbach’s first large-scale event with the group. The Program Board comedy chair said the comedians mentioned being pleased with the university’s hospitality.

Program Board spent 20 percent of its annual budget on the Back to School Comedy Jam. Out of the $325,000 budget allocated from the Campus Programming Fund, Program Board spent $65,000 on the event’s talent.

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Jay Pharoah was paid $35,000, Michael Blackson was paid $17,500 and host DC Young Fly was paid $12,000 for their acts during the Sept. 8 performance in McGuirk Arena.

Damon Brown, director of Student Activities and Involvement, said Program Board distributed 2,500 free tickets, and filled the same number of seats. He added the $20 tickets on sale for the general public were minimal, calling it primarily a student show.

The organization paid for production and technology fees, but has yet to receive a finalized amount.

Brown called the event the “biggest comedy show he has seen in his 10 years at CMU.” This was the first comedy act to perform at McGuirk Arena since Demetri Martin in 2009, when McGuirk Arena was known as the Rose Center.

He said the Back to School Comedy Jam was meant to

feedback,” Hengesbach said. “We were very happy we were able to provide great entertainment for free for our students, especially right at the beginning of the school year.”

Angie Distelrath, Program Board executive director, had little time to promote the show, but was excited to see such a large crowd for the first large event of the semester.

“With the two weeks we had to promote it. I can’t say I had the highest expectations for it, but I had a good feeling that it would be an average turnout for the event,” Distelrath said. “It was definitely a huge success for Program Board.”

Brown added the limited time and the cancellation of Mainstage was not harmful to the show and its ability to engage student interest.

“For a free show, there’s no need to put out mass marketing ahead of time because there’s no demand to get tickets — there’s no rush to get tickets,” Brown said.

Brown stressed the importance of having an event like the Back to School Comedy Jam to start the school year, and is looking forward to seeing how Program Board grows throughout the year.

“We’re in the midst of everything right now,” he said. “This year’s going pretty fast, but it that was a good way to start the (2016-17) academic year.”

inclusion on campus Budget increase to the Office for Institutional Diversity a sign university is making good on multicultural promise Central Michigan University’s student body is changing.

With targeted recruiting and outreach, we are bringing more diverse students to campus. That includes students from different races, religions, sexuality and gender identities.

Some of those changes are organic — a positive caveat of Michigan’s changing demographics. In some cases, those changes are by design. CMU is taking steps to build a more diverse campus community, and that starts by recognizing these disparate groups’ individual needs.

The university is going all in on inclusion and diversity. Evidence of that is the finance department’s recent decision to increase the base budget of the Office for Institutional Diversity.

This year, OID is getting $75,000 to spend on diversity programs, guest speakers and cultural awareness events. It’s the largest OID budget increase since 2010.

We commend CMU officials for taking immediate, monetary action to increase inclusion on campus. The OID is undoubtedly the strongest mechanism to fight intolerance on campus.

Funding them to this capacity is a clear example of CMU upholding their commitment to diversity, a stated goal for the 2016-17 academic year.

CMU has sometimes struggled with the notion that it is a primarily white — and primarily straight — campus. Carolyn Dunn, associate vice president of OID, acknowledged these struggles last year in an examination of race relations on campus.

Dunn understands the roadblocks in place for CMU. Being a woman of color makes her appropriately aware of CMU’s diversity

goals. Her office works primarily with students and faculty to bridge cultural gaps on campus.

Under OID facilitation, the university offers Soup and Substance panels, the Central Michigan University Pow wow, faculty workshops and month-long cultural heritage celebrations.

OID’s stated mission is to use these activities as bolsters of cultural awareness within our existing student population — which is now also the stated mission of CMU’s top brass.

For her and University President George Ross, making sure students are used to a competitive, diverse workplace is of the utmost importance.

Aside from programming and workshops, OID staff encourage opportunities for students to grapple with issues of race, gender and sexuality.

It should come as no surprise that gender and LGBTQ services are among OID’s top individual priorities this year. Dunn allocated $25,000 of her budget specifically to the Office of LGBTQ Services.

The move should be heartening news to LGBTQ students — a group who may feel shut out of institutional diversity talks when

race often dominates the conversation. Acknowledging our LGTBQ students means acknowledging a group that transcends all racial, religious and national lines.

In that regard, LGBTQ students are at the forefront of the diversity equation. We must create a campus that allows them, and all of our students, to flourish without barriers.

When we see the lines that connect us more clearly than those that divide us, we can accurately access our shortcomings as a multicultural country that takes pride in its differences.

CMU made two major steps toward that type of inclusion in relatively a short period of time.

Let’s continue the momentum throughout the rest of the year.

Annual Security and Fire Safety Report released online

Disciplinary actions for drug and liquor law violations have increased since last year, according to the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report released by the Central Michigan University Police Department.

Between 2014 and 2015, the number of liquor law violations referred for disciplinary action increased from 473 to 776. Disciplinary action against drug violations saw an increase from 125 to 147.

Lt. Cameron Wassman with CMUPD said the numbers in the report are “fairly consistent” from year to year.

“A lot of variables can impact

(citations),” he said. “A lot of liquor law violations given in the city are driven by (the presence of) football games, Welcome Weekend, St. Patrick’s Day and other (party weekends). A lot of that can drive the fluctuation of numbers.”

Wassman said the differences in numbers can also be impacted by other incidents the department could be dealing with at the time.

Since the department only has a limited number of officers, Wassman said if there are “more serious things going on, we’re going to focus on that instead of writing MIP tickets.”

Between 2014 and 2015, reported on-campus instances of rape, robbery, liquor law arrests and domestic violence decreased.

The most dramatic decrease, liquor law arrests dropped from

136 in 2014 to 53 in 2015.

Offenses related to fondling and stalking saw major increases, with 21 reports of fondling in 2015 compared to four in 2014.

Stalking offenses increased from six to 10 in the past year. There were also four instances of rape in 2015 compared to 9 in 2014.

More than 100 pages long, the report outlines crime statistics both on and off campus. It also provides a list of resources for students interested in filing a sexual misconduct complaint, sex offender registry information and contact information for the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity.

The report also lists information for the Office of Student Conduct, the Office of Residence Life and CMUPD.

CMUPD: NO VALIDITY TO REPORTS OF CREEPY CLOWN SIGHTINGS NORTH OF CAMPUS There is no clown antagonizing Central Michigan University.

That’s what Lt. Cameron Wassman with the Central Michigan University Police Department emphasized Tuesday after members of the department spent the night farming “handfuls of calls” related to alleged clown sightings.

Students reported instances of seeing someone dressed as a clown carrying either a gun or a knife north of campus early Tuesday morning.

Most of these calls were “second, third, fourth and even fifth-hand sightings,” Wassman said. “(Regarding) everything that went down (Monday) night, you can call it a hoax or an urban legend, but there was nothing to suggest someone was even dressed as a clown,” he said.

For students who spent most of the night ‘clown hunting’ as one social media user dubbed it, Wassman has one thing to say: Don’t do it.

“If this (clown) were

real and someone was out with a weapon, we do not want the public to gather up and have roving bands of people with hockey sticks and pitch forks,” he said. “All we ask is that if you do see some sort of violent, suspicious or criminal act report it to us.”

Writing Intensive goal met, still short for global campus

Students are required to complete 12 credit hours of writing intensive courses before graduation.

With more than 7,000 seats in Writing Intensive courses available this semester, Central Michigan University is on track to making the classes available enough to keep students on track for graduation.

General Education Director Tracy Brown appeared before the Academic Senate to update on the availability of Writing Intensive courses.

“Assuming that we get another 7,000 seats or so next semester, we should meet the 13,484 seat goal this year,” Brown said.

CMU will need 16,418 seats available in writing intensive courses next year to ensure all students can meet the requirements. Brown said number has been inflated because in 2014, CMU did not provide enough seats in Writing Intensive courses, creating “a bubble of students that are moving through the process right now, taking up seats, and it’s creating this peak of 16,000 next year.

“The assumption is that after next year that’s going to start falling off,” she said.

Global Campus needs between 1,500 and 1,600 seats to keep up with students, Brown said. Only 659 seats were made available to Global Campus students this semester, and 438 of those were taken by oncampus students.

“We’re going to need to produce many more than 1,500 to 1,600 global campus seats to meet global campus demand,” Brown said.

Senator Tracy Davis of the English Language and Literature Department asked if faculty would be able to block on-campus students from taking seats meant for off-campus students.

“If we have 35 seats in a Writing Intensive (course), why not hold 20 of those for global (students)?” Davis asked. “If they don’t fill, then we open them up to our on-campus (students).”

The Academic Senate also voted to combine the Reference Services and Global Campus Library Services Departments. The merge was requested to allow students with a combination of in-person and online classes to use the library services seamlessly. The senate voted in favor of the merge without discussion.

Warriner Hall restrooms to become handicap accessible

In order to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, restrooms in Warriner Hall will be renovated with new fixtures, flooring and tile to become handicap accessible.

The ADA of 1990 is a civil rights law prohibiting unjustified discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Warriner Hall was built in 1926. The code did not exist when the restrooms were built.

The deferred maintenance project was a result of the Facilities Condition Assessment — a component of CMU’s 2013 Campus Master Plan.

Domestic water replacement and construction on the second and third-floor restrooms began May 9. The total cost of the renovations in Warriner is $788,000, said Steve Lawrence, former Associate Vice President of Facilities Management.

Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Inc. worked in collaboration with the Central Michigan University Plant Engineering and Planning Department and performed assessments for existing buildings and sup-

porting infrastructure on campus.

When the renovations are completed, the restrooms in Warriner will be accessible to all people, said Linda Slater, plant engineering and planning director.

“There will be at least one stall in each (restroom) that a wheelchair can fit into with ease, the sinks will be the right height and it will reach ADA standards,” she said.

Since the Plachta Auditorium in Warriner is used for many events, the bathroom updates were necessary to fit the needs of all guests visiting campus, said Lynne L’Hommedieu, director of Student Disability Services.

“Technically, the bathrooms were (accessible) before, but there really was not much room for a wheelchair to move around,” she said.

Construction on the first-floor restrooms outside of Plachta began Aug. 22 and will be completed Oct. 28, Project Manager Bob Francisco said.

“We want our restrooms to be comfortable and successful,” Fancisco said. “Since we have so many people using the auditorium, we want our guests to be able to access the facilities.”

SGA Legal Clinic partners with attorneys for student use

Students in need of legal consultation won’t need to look any further than the basement of the Bovee University Center.

The Student Government Association Legal Clinic has open for the semester by appointment in the Student Activity and Involvement Center.

The group specializes in helping with tenant-landlord issues, nuisance party tickets or issues in small claims court. If students want legal advice, they can meet with a member of the Legal Clinic and get referred to one of two local law firms for free a 30-minute consultation.

The list of legal trouble students can get into is not testament to their bad character, but “to their humanity,”

said Damian Fisher, Mount Pleasant-based attorney. Fisher helps the clinic get in contact with other local firms.

“When (students) make a mistake, we need to be on their side supporting them,” Fisher said. “The attorney gets a referral and potential client.

What the student gets is a free consultation and legal advice.”

Co-directors Macey Miller, a senior from Midland, and Freeland junior Stephen Dunn provide helpful resources on law-related matters to each client’s situation, but they stop short of giving legal advice.

Instead, advice-seeking clients are passed off to a practicing attorney in partnership with the legal clinic: either from Barberi Law or Spencer and Hausmann.

The partnerships are new this year. Before, students were referred to professors with their General

Education Developments. “(Professors) wouldn’t know what to do with them,” Miller said. “They couldn’t represent them and didn’t know who to send them to.”

While professional expertise is valuable , Miller said it is possible to be satisfied with the advice that comes with a free, thirty-minute consultation.

“It’s not every day you run into legal trouble,” he said. “It’s nice to get legal advice in a costeffective way rather than pay and not be able to use that firm.”

Her co-director, Dunn, said the clinic has already had traction this year compared to last.

“Looking at our numbers from last year, about 15 students utilized the clinic,” Dunn said. “This year we have had around six and only been open for a week.”

FASHION DESIGN WORKS TO BE SHOWCASED AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Fashion Merchandising and Design professors and students will have seven research projects and four fashion products displayed in November at an international conference.

The designs were accepted by the International Textile and Apparel Association and will be showcased at the annual conference from Nov. 8-12 in Vancouver, British Colombia. The ITAA conference hosts more than 600 people and features a diversity of themes such as technology, design and

environmental studies.

“We’ve submitted and been accepted before, but in recent years this is the most robust list of presentations accepted,” said Michael Mamp, Central Michigan University fashion professor.

Students and faculty have been working on their projects for more than a year.

Professors Mamp and Su Kyoung An collaborated together on a gown inspired by traditional Korean costume. The textile was printed from a

painting onto the fabric.

This ecological process and use of technology is one of the reasons the dress was accepted, Mamp said.

The selection process was very rigorous, Mamp said.

Only 45 percent of faculty who submitted designs were accepted, 32 percent were accepted for graduate designs and 23 percent for undergraduate designs.

“It is increasingly more competitive for every category,” Mamp said.

Bonamego wouldn’t trade walk-on career at CMU if given the chance

During his college football career, John Bonamego didn’t score touchdowns on Saturdays or have a scholarship paying his tuition. When you ask him about his collegiate football days, he said he wouldn’t change it if he had the chance.

After walking onto Central Michigan University’s football team and graduating from CMU in 1987, Bonamego began a coaching career that took him to the sport’s highest level and ultimately brought him back to his alma mater — three collegiate and five NFL assistant coaching jobs later.

“I’ve wanted this job for a very long time. I plan to start and end my head coaching career here,” Bonamego said when he was introduced as CMU’s 28th head football coach on Feb. 9, 2015.

Back on the sidelines of Kelly/Shorts Stadium in the familiar softness of mid-Michigan’s autumn sun, CMU’s second-year head coach is in the thick of living his dream. Whistles blowing and shoulder pads clashing together, Bonamego is

in his element. Arms crossed and glasses on, he stalks around his team’s practice, less than a week removed from a 49-10 loss to rival Western Michigan, with a coolness that makes you feel he knows something you do not. He stands back in observation, allowing the coaching staff he assembled to do its job, preparing the Chippewas for a Homecoming matchup against Ball State.

His preparation to be a head coach began 30 years before he got his dream job at CMU. A 5-foot-8, 160-pound quarterback from Paw Paw High School in 1983, Bonamego, like many young football players, wanted to make it to the NFL. He was not heavily recruited by colleges in high school.

His coach at Paw Paw, Don Moorhead, who played quarterback for Bo Shembechler at the University of Michigan, did not tell Bonamego “a whole lot back in those days” about how to get recruited.

Hope College, Grand Valley Sate and Ferris State all offered Bonamego scholarships. He even had an offer from U-M assistant coach Gary Moeller to walk on at Michigan. He didn’t take the offers.

Bonamego watched his first game in Kelly/Shorts Stadium the summer before his senior year of high school on Sept. 4, 1982 — a 35-10 CMU win against Indiana State. For him, it was “love at first sight.”

“Everybody wants to play someplace where football is important — where they have tradition,” he said. “My first time visiting Kelly/Shorts Stadium, it was the entire fan base (that impressed me). The student section was outstanding. (CMU) had a winning

tradition and an iconic head coach, (Herb) Deromedi.”

Competing with Division I athletes for the first time, Bonamego said the start of his college career was a shock, but he never felt incapable of competing.

“It definitely can be intimidating being at a (Division 1) practice for the first time — especially as a walk on,” he said. “Back then, everything we did was in full pads. It was physical, but you were always treated with respect.”

When practice began, he was given black cleats by long-time CMU equipment manager Dan Bookie. The rest of the team was wearing white cleats, Bonamego said. It was the way he carried himself with confidence that allowed him to keep up with the scholarship players.

“Image is how you see yourself. Identity is how you’re perceived by others. I never saw myself as not belonging,” Bonamego said. “I prepared that way and competed that way, so that became my identity.”

As a Chippewa, Bonamego saw time at about every skill position on the field, playing quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back, slot back and running back in practice. Opportunities to play in games came sparingly.

“My goal was to be a starter here up until the very last practice that I walked off the field,” Bonamego said. “That’s what I was always working toward. I never gave up on that.”

Neither a scholarship nor playing time were in store for Bonamego.

After his death, adding a sidewalk and lights along the road was discussed by city officials.

OPTION TWO The other option is to add sidewalk and lighting to an existing pathway that is already lit and follows a couple of roads directly to Towers.

The road curves along West Campus Drive and Denison Road, with fields on either side and never crosses an intersection. Runners and walkers have been known to use the lit area.

The issue with this path is it does not go all the way to Deerfield. It stops one street short, ending at the intersection of Denison and Crawford roads.

The current walkway’s sidewalk and street lamps stop midway through the path to campus, resuming again around 100 yards ahead.

The second city proposition would add lighting and sidewalk to the shorter stretch of Crawford Road.

Mount Pleasant sophomore Courtney Wheeler thinks adding a sidewalk and lights to Crawford Road is the right thing to do, regardless of cost.

“I don’t feel like it matters how much money it is,” Wheeler said. “Somebody already died. There is no price you can put on someone’s life.”

With an addition of the sidewalk and lights along Crawford Road, Wheeler said it could help to encourage students to not drink and drive. Due to the road’s close proximity to The Cabin, she said students might not want to risk walking home in the dark despite potentially being drunk.

Not everyone shares the same belief. Two roommates who live in an apartment along Deerfield Road said they think paving the shorter amount is better.

“It wouldn’t make sense if they did the more expensive (project) because they may not be able to finish it,” TerMarsch said. “Then it would be a sidewalk without streetlights and that kind of defeats the purpose.”

TerMarsch’s roommate, Clio junior Kayla Hatt, said the curving path is more convenient for her as a resident on Deerfield Road.

“If I wanted to take the other one (Crawford) to campus I would have to walk all the way to the Cabin,” she said.

City officials: Policing plan created to improve relations with city

Homecoming Weekend visitors will experience a police presence similar to Western Weekend.

Both Central Michigan University and Mount Pleasant Police are following a 2014 plan developed by the City of Mount Pleasant to reduce tensions between student residents and full-year residents.

“To decrease disruptive behavior and improve relationships between the full and part year residents, city officials have worked to improve partnerships with local landlords, CMU and its students, as well as enforce ordinances on a more consistent basis,” Mount Pleasant Public Information Officer Jeff Browne said in a press release.

Browne said police will be using the same practices for Homecoming, only without Michigan State Police present. On-foot patrols north of campus will start off in groups of ten, and break down into smaller teams throughout the night at the discretion of the group leader.

Breakdowns usually occur if many officers are needed to attend to a scene such as potentially breaking up a large nuisance party or fights.

The plan was formed in 2014 as a response to an increase of incidents during Welcome Weekend, including vandalism, large parties and open intoxication, said City Manager Nancy Ridley. She also cited an increase in trash following parties in the neighborhood north of campus as another reason for the creation of the plan.

“We started seeing more concerns from fullyear residents,” Ridley said. “We felt we had to do something to turn the tide.”

She added students had raised concerns that CMU’s growing reputation as a “party school” was affecting the image of the university and hurting the value of their degrees.

The plan involved reemphasizing the City-Student Liaison Committee, which Ridley said had been meeting infrequently. Student Government Association President Ian Elliot, who is on the committee, said he feels communication with the city has been positive. He said the plan has been effective in addressing city concerns.

Elliot said SGA and the city would, “continue open communication and express our concerns and to listen to the city’s concerns.”

Police also increased communication with landlords. Browne said landlords could lose their rental license for illegal acts of tenants.

The city has not had to take a landlord’s license, he said, but the policy was necessary to hold

The intramural baseball field was scattered with students hunting for gold Tuesday night while participating in the third night of the annual Central Michigan University Homecoming Medallion Hunt.

The medallion is currently hidden on CMU’s campus for students to find.

A clue is revealed at 10 p.m. each night to students from Sunday to Thursday of Homecoming week on the Medallion Hunt’s Facebook, Twitter and OrgSync.

Tuesday’s clue guided many students to the baseball field.

“We ran all over campus like a chicken with our heads

cut off,” Benton Harbor sophomore Courtney Burnett said.

This year’s medallion hunt theme is “Guardians of the Medallion” to coincide with the superhero theme of Homecoming. When Burnett’s team went to the baseball field, they were given a special code, which he said translated to “Pepper Potts at Stark Tower.” Potts is a fictional character in Marvel’s “Iron Man.” Burnett and his group, which included St. Clair freshman Christian Henson, Warren freshman Dallas Wheelock and Kalamazoo freshman Taylor Lajiness, searched several locations, such as the Engineering & Technology Building, the Bovee University Center and

the Towers residence halls, to no avail.

With each night, Henson said the quest becomes more difficult.

“It’s getting harder,” Henson said. “The first night was super easy and we thought we could figure out where it was at, but after that the new clues on the other nights threw us off where we’re going.”

Freshmen Julia Dobija of Trenton, Sara Byks of Mount Clemens and Travis Herr of Lapeer represented Larzelere Hall. Their quest began at the Towers with a hint from the Larzelere Hall Facebook group. After no luck in their search, the trio hunted down Washington Street and North Campus before calling it a night Tuesday.

Football looks to end losing streak on Homecoming

Coming off of a 49-10 loss to Western Michigan in front of 30, 411 people in Kelly/Shorts Stadium, Central Michigan football is determined to beat Ball State on Saturday to earn its first MidAmerican Conference win and snap its two-game losing streak.

In CMU’s first three games, the defense held opponents to 18 points per game. Since then, the defense has surrendered 91 points in its past two games. It allowed more than 400 passing yards against Virginia and more than 250 rushing yards against WMU. The Cardinals (3-2, 0-1 MAC) come into Saturday’s game after losing 31-24 to Northern Illinois in Muncie. Ball State features a balanced offense that has rushed and passed for more than 200 yards per game.

Greg Colby, CMU’s defensive coordinator, said his defense focused on addressing recent mistakes during practice this week.

“We haven’t played very well for two weeks,” Colby said. “Two weeks ago we didn’t play hard enough and last week we didn’t tackle very well.

We need to have better fundamentals, which we’ve been really focused on this week in practice.”

rushing and six touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry this season. The team is second in the MAC in rushing touchdowns with 12. “(Ball State) is a solid football team that’s playing really well,” Colby said. “They’ve got a quarterback that’s one of the best we’ll see all year throwing the ball. They’re very good at doing what they do. We’re going to have our hands full and have to execute this week.”

Despite challenges, Colby said he believes the team has plenty of favorable matchups to turn the Chippewas’ fortunes around.

Ball State’s defense ranks third in the MAC in points allowed and seventh nationally in sacks with 18.

During the loss against WMU, the Chippewas allowed a season high eight sacks and were limited to 277 yards of total offense and 10 points, both season lows.

CMU’s offensive line has had a difficult time protecting senior quarterback Cooper Rush, who has been the second-most sacked quarterback in the conference.

“Defensively, they’re playing well,” head coach John Bonamego said.

“Going into last week, they were leading the country in sacks, so that definitely has our attention coming off a game where we gave up eight of them.”

Injuries have affected the Chippewas lately, but the team will have some players return Saturday. Junior offensive lineman Derek Edwards will

be able to play in at least a limited role after missing last week’s game, and senior safety Tony Annese will be a game-time decision for the second consecutive week. He has not played since Sept. 10 against Oklahoma State.

True freshman running back Johnathan Ward will miss an extended period of time with a leg injury.

Bonamego apologizes for comments following loss to WMU

Following Saturday night’s 4910 loss to Western Michigan, head coach John Bonamego said he would rather go through eight weeks of chemotherapy again instead of losing to WMU the way his team did.

His statement was met with complaints from cancer survivors and

their families on social media.

“As a leader, I need to hold myself to a higher standard,” Bonamego said. “I learned a valuable lesson that I won’t ever repeat, so I hope that people will understand where it was coming from. I certainly didn’t mean it to come out the way it did.”

On Tuesday, Bonamego apologized for his comments following the team’s practice. He said he wished he

would have used a better analogy.

“I was emotional at the time and I was trying to think of the most BONAMEGO painful thing I had ever gone through,” he said. “I realized it may have offended other

people and I regret that. I apologize to anyone I may have offended with that statement.”

On Monday, Bonamego began speaking to a WMU fan online whose wife had gone through breast cancer twice, and eventually spoke with both of them on the phone.

“I didn’t realize at the time that it was breast cancer awareness month, so it really stung me that much more,” Bonamego said. “The

last thing I would ever want to do is insult someone in that way.”

The couple forgave Bonamego, who said he was appreciative he got the opportunity to speak with them and receive their forgiveness.

In the past, Bonamego has frequently spoken candidly with the media.

Despite experiencing backlash from his latest statement, he said he will continue to speak truthfully on all matters concerning his team.

TIME WELL SPENT Senior goalkeeper makes most of final year after two seasons on bench

“That’s the big school in Minnesota. You grow up being a Gopher fan,” Knutson said. “I went to a bunch of games growing up and that just made me want to pursue that opportunity.”

A three-year starter at Eagan High School, Knutson earned several accolades, including ESPN Top 20 National Goaltender, 2009 Minnesota State Cup Champion and 2011 All-State selection.

After an illustrious high school career, Knutson earned

a scholarship to Minnesota and was finally attending her dream school.

She played only 17 minutes her freshman season, but became the starter as a sophomore. Knutson tallied 118 saves and a 1.23 goals against average as the team went 118-2 and made it to the NCAA Tournament.

Despite her success, Knutson felt something was wrong. She said she felt like she wasn’t given the proper opportunity at Minnesota but saw a chance at a school out of state.

Peter McGahey — the Minnesota State head coach at the time — had accepted a coaching position at CMU and asked Knutson to join him in Mount Pleasant.

McGahey had previously recruited Knutson at Minnesota State. “(McGahey) is a phenomenal coach and I wanted to be a part of something he was building,” Knutson said. “I really believed in the culture he was growing and the process and his vision for the future at CMU.”

Knutson arrived at Central Michigan University the next fall but had to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

She spent the season determined to start in net as soon as she could.

During a training session that spring, however, Knutson tore her Achilles tendon.

“I didn’t even realize it happened, but it was tough after I found out,” Knutson said.

After surgery, Knutson spent the next eight months working on running and healing her leg.

While she wanted to get back onto the field, Knutson saw a chance to help her team in another way.

She continued to go to practice every day and did whatever it took to make her teammates better.

She said while her personal success was important, she learned that nothing was more important than supporting her team.

Years later, Knutson is having a career season as a Division I goalkeeper, but not for the Golden Gophers — she wears maroon and gold for Central Michigan’s soccer team.

Having started all 12 games in goal this season, Knutson helped the Chippewas achieve their best start in program history (10-1-1, 2-1-1 Mid-American Conference). Her MACleading six shutouts has put CMU in position to compete for a conference championship in 2016.

Knutson added that while this wasn’t the future she envisioned for herself as a kid growing up in Eagan, she wouldn’t trade it for anything.

“I never thought I would take this path,” she said. “I couldn’t be more appreciative for all the twists and turns, highs and lows.”

As the season has gone on, Knutson has continued to deliver. The senior has tallied five shutouts and has allowed only one multi-goal game.

After struggling against Northern Illinois last Friday by allowing four goals, Knutson rebounded by allowing just one in the last two games against Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio).

Through 12 games, Knutson has earned MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors three times.

McGahey said her efforts have been crucial to the team’s record start in 2016.

“What Kristen is doing now, she has earned,” he said. “Kristen has gone out and done her work and grinded and believed in herself. She deserves the lion’s share of the credit in terms of overcoming the challenges and continuing to claw and scratch from where she was at to now. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

While Knutson is thrilled with her success thus far, she said the credit belongs to the women protecting her.

“My defenders are incredible players and athletes,” she said.

who started in goal last season — saw the “positive” attitude Knutson had while not playing and said that has kept her motivated this year.

“She taught me how to be a good teammate and that you need to help your teammates whether you are the starter or not,” Reed said.

By the time fall camp came around, Knutson felt ready after playing with the Minnesota Twin Stars — a travel team — over the summer.

Although she had come a long way since the injury, nothing was guaranteed.

After a “hard fought” battle between her and Reed, Knutson was rewarded when her name was on the opening game sheet as the starter against Duquesne.

“I was very excited but so nervous,” Knutson said. “It had been awhile since I had been in collegiate competition.”

Duquesne had come in as the reigning Atlantic 10 Tournament Champions and looked to start off strong again in 2016.

He won the Iron Man Award, an award given to the team’s best practice player, twice and was named the lone captain for his senior Homecoming game.

Size was Bonamego’s biggest issue. He said it affected his on-field ability “in every way.”

Being the smartest player on the field, Bonamego said, was how he made up for his size disadvantage.

“I always knew what I was supposed to do,” he said. “It was never going to be a matter of me not knowing what to do or how to do it or giving the right effort.”

Worried about her son playing football because he was smaller than other children, Bonamego’s mother, Rita Bonamego, said she couldn’t be prouder of her son.

The former Red Cross nurse teared up when she saw her son on the field at Kelly/Shorts. With a thick accent that shows the family’s northernItalian roots, Rita Bonamego said her son dreamed about coaching CMU since he was in college.

“We have been proud of him because he did reach his goal and he did what he dreamed of doing, which not many people are able to fulfill in their lives,” she said.

Off the field, football rarely left Bonamego’s mind.

Former CMU student Buzz Famularo lived next door to Bonamego on the second floor of Thorpe Hall during the mid-80s. Famularo said Bonamego was frequently drawing plays and entertaining dormmates with passionate rants about his offensive playbook — earning him the nickname “Coach Bono.”

“He’d come in and sit down and inevitably, the conversation would go back to drawing up plays and talking about football,” Famularo said. “It was this tiny walk-on with all these big guys, drawing up plays from out of his head, saying ‘this is what we need to do.’”

He always bothered the legendary CMU coach to look at Bonamego’s offense called “the pyramid.”

By his junior season, Bonamego realized he was not good enough to play in the NFL. He was interested in coaching. He shared his goal with Deromedi and looked to him as a mentor.

Bonamego said he “learned everything” from CMU’s all-time winningest head coach. “(Deromedi) gave me a chance to be a part of a Division I football team,” he said. “He recognized me for my work. He allowed me to be dressed for games and play. I got the Iron Man Award twice.

He gave me the honor of walking out as a sole captian at homecoming my senior year — that’s probably one of the top honors I’ve ever received.”

As a walk-on, Bonamego’s time with Deromedi was limited. Instead, he talked more regularly with his recruiting coach Denny McFlurr.

“Our relationship (Bonamego and Deromedi’s) definitely grew over the years,” Bonamego said. “He was always very honest with me. My focus was to make myself the very best I could be and (Deromedi) appreciated that and (was) always encouraging and communicating to me what I needed to improve.”

Now standing in Deromedi’s shoes, Bonamego said he “has empathy” for kids standing in the same shoes he stood in 33 years ago, but is also realistic.

“That’s the path I took, but we have to see enough in them to warrant the opportunity too,” he said. “This is a game where people get hurt and the last thing I want to do is put someone in a situation they aren’t physically able or gifted enough to protect themselves and their teammates.”

Walk-on long snapper Travis Malinowski said his head coach understands how hard walk-on players have to work.

“He understands the effort and determination required to play college football as a walk-on and how special it is to be a part of the CMU family,” Malinowski said. “As part of the team, we have the same goals and commitments as the scholarship players, and coach Bono treats us all the same. He always promotes a positive atmosphere for CMU football.”
