MAN STABBED, POLICE SEARCH FOR SUSPECT Central Michigan University Police sent a message to students and staff at 10:30 p.m.

Saturday about a stabbing at the Super 8 Motel on Mission Street.

A tweet from CMUPD said a 30-year-old man was stabbed in the leg at 10 p.m. The suspect, a 6-foot2-inch white man in blue jeans and a blue flannel shirt, fled the scene. The message said the suspect also had a Pit bull dog with him. The suspect was reported to have gone east.

Public Information Officer Jeff Browne of the Mount Pleasant Police

Department said a fight began in the motel’s hallway and spilled into an elevator. The complaint pinned the suspect down with his leg, and the suspect responded by pulling out a knife and stabbing him. Browne said the man’s injury was not life threatening. He also said the identity of the suspect has only been reported as “Michael.”

Both the injured man and his girlfriend, who witnessed the fight, were guests at the motel. The couple has not been cooperating with police, Browne said, and the injure man told police

he does not want to press charges. The man would not say what the fight was over.

Police later called the suspect, who was using a prepaid phone. Browne said the suspect is no longer in Mount Pleasant. They were unable to trace his location.

The suspect told police he was uninjured in the altercation and admitted to the stabbing. Browne said the investigation is ongoing.

Police advised anyone who sees the suspect to not approach him and call 9-1-1 immediately.

CAR CRASHES INTO HOME OF CMU EMPLOYEE A couple living near the intersection of Kane and Crosslanes streets was surprised when a white van drove into their living room at 8:51 p.m. Friday night.

William and Diane Thomas said by the time they went outside to see what had happened, police cars were at the scene.

A press release from the Mount Pleasant Police Department said an officer tried to stop the vehicle on Isabella Road for a traffic violation. The vehicle attempted to flee, leading to a pursuit by police.

The driver was lodged in Isabella County Jail. He is charged with driving on a suspended license, fleeing and eluding police, resisting and obstructing and failure to stop at a personal injury accident. The driver also had an outstanding warrant.

The passenger was released and was not charged for the crash.

Ranzenberger to plead guilty to child pornograpy charge

Police pursued the driver on foot. A perimeter was set up between Chippewa, Broadway, Russel and Brown streets while search parties looked for the man.

The 40-year-old driver was found at 9:56 p.m. after a manhunt by police.

The couple said their living room was destroyed as a result of the incident.

A former Central Michigan University faculty member charged with possession of child pornography will enter a guilty plea in federal court at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 at the U.S. District Court in Bay City.

Mark Ranzenberger’s legal counsel filed documents Friday to enter a guilty plea before Magistrate Judge Patricia Morris.

The plea agreement must be accepted by Judge Thomas Luddington, who will sentence Ranzenberger based on the details of the plea.

Ranzenberger was arrested May 20 after police found 1,032 images of child pornography on various digital devices in his possession.

CMU’s investigation of Ranzenberger began after a student reported seeing thumbnails of pornographic images on his computer. Ranzenberger

unknowingly projected those images onto a classroom overhead screen, the student reported.

On March RANZENBERGER 9, Faculty Personnel Services found images of child pornography on Ranzenberger’s computer and reported their findings to the Central Michigan University Police Department.

Detective Michael Sienkiewicz and other officers obtained a search warrant on March 10 and searched Ranzenberger’s office.

Police confiscated a universityowned iMac computer, USB external hard drive, zip disk/ drive, four 3.5 floppy disks, two USB thumb drives, two Flip video cameras, an IGB hard drive, a Kodak digital camera with an SD card, an iPad and multiple digital storage devices. Ranzenberger later voluntarily turned his personal

computer over to CMUPD. A U.S. Secret Service criminal complaint filed May 19 states Ranzenberger admitted to CMUPD Sgt. Mike Morrow he had obtained the images from a German website between 2004 and 2008.

A document was also found in the search detailing how to “groom” a child from birth to age 11 to make them more receptive to participating in sexual acts.

Ranzenberger said the document was “purely fantasy.”

The content found included images of children younger than 12 years old engaged in sex acts, and one image of the penetration of an infant. Police also found photos of clothed children in public locations taken by Ranzenberger, without the knowledge of the children.

A CMU alumnus, Ranzenberger taught journalism and broadcast and cinematic arts classes at CMU since 1999. He previously worked at the Midland Daily News, Huron Daily Tribune and The Morning Sun.

Former Fox News meteorologist pursues Ph.D. at CMU

When Hurricane Sandy devastated the state of New York in 2012, Maria Molina Timmer was the Fox News anchor announcing it to a national audience.

Now the meteorologist is working to take her career to the next level — right here at Central Michigan University.

After spending six years at Fox News, Timmer enrolled this semester at CMU to pursue an Earth and Ecosystem science doctorate degree.

Timmer will continue researching severe weather and climate at CMU. She started her research with Dr. John Allen at Colombia University while earning her Masters.

Central Michigan Life spoke with Timmer to learn more about her career and what she hopes to accomplish during her time at CMU. CM LIFE: Why did you decide to leave Fox News and get a Ph.D.?

TIMMER: For me, education has always been important. When my parents were in Nicaragua, they aspired to be scientists. However, because of the situation that was going on in Nicaragua in terms of politics, which I to this day don’t fully understand, they were unable to pursue their dreams in academia.

It was always important for me to go to school, pursue whatever dream career I had and try to go as far as I could. When I was a freshman at Florida State, I began working on an undergraduate thesis, did some independent research and I knew in that moment I wanted to get my Ph.D. Have you thought about what you plan to do after you get your degree? You said you might want to return to Fox News.

I have thought about it, but that would be three years from

now. I learned things can really change because I never imagined myself to be in Michigan. I know I love working in media. I think it’s a really important and powerful place to work in, so I would return. I do love research as well and science. Ideally, I would do both somehow. We’ll see.

You were hired at Fox News in 2010. What was that experience like, being in front of millions of people every day and working in that environment?

The first time I went live at Fox News Channel, I was terrified. It was my first time going live on national TV. I received a lot of advice — a lot of training. I worked with great people who coached me prior to that moment. Once they put me on there, I felt like I was ready so I was able to get over my nerves and make it through the first newscast. Over the next several months, you kind of start to get used to it and get better at it.

Do you have a favorite memory being on that network?

I think covering Hurricane Sandy. I grew in South Florida and I went through several tropical storms and hurricanes.

When I lived in New York, I never thought I would be dealing with some kind of tropical system. I wanted to become a meteorologist when I was five years old when Hurricane Andrew hit South Florida. To be put in the position where I was telling people what to expect, or what could happen, that was pretty special.

How do you like Mount Pleasant and CMU so far?

How is it different from Manhattan?

Now I’m driving, which I was not doing when I lived in Manhattan. I think it’s the perfect place to live when you’re trying to get a Ph.D. because you need to be close to your school. I know where all the Starbucks’ are already. There aren’t many distractions, although we do have the

Soaring Eagle. I haven’t been there yet. I’m just focused on school and making sure I get this done.

When you share with everyone that you’re going to pursue a Ph.D., you better not fail.

Why did you decide this was the right time to pursue your Ph.D.?

I thought about it a lot for many, many months. I kind of thought about all angles — the fact that I’d be living in a different town, and it wouldn’t be New York City, which I loved.

It would be a different type of industry — it wouldn’t be media — it would be academia and research. I thought about it so much for so many months — I even drove my husband a little bit crazy — that I felt like once this moment came and it was time to move, I was ready for it.

I kind of knew what to expect, I did some research, I looked at Mount Pleasant and I looked at where we were going to be living. I don’t feel any kind of shock or anything. It just feels right. It just feels like what I’m supposed to be doing right now.

You were born in Nicaragua, moved to South Florida, worked at Fox News and you are now at CMU. Did you expect this at all? Do you ever look back and say "Wow?" I think in life you have to follow what your gut says you should be doing next. I think it’s important to not get too comfortable, even if it’s your dream job. It’s important to keep pushing yourself and being in situations where you are unsure you are going to succeed, but you want to succeed in anything you want to do. I’m not too surprised with the randomness of it. I think everyone should really pursue their dreams, whatever it is they want to do.

A Bond Beyond Baseball

Teammates find comfort in each other following unexpected deaths of family members during offseason

C

olton Bradley and Michael Brettell were already friends and teammates, but two life-changing moments this summer elevated their relationship from friends to brothers.

The morning of June 7 started as a normal day for Bradley. His mother, Debra Bradley, attended his summer league baseball game.

Colton and his Central Michigan University baseball teammate Brettell — who was living with the Bradley family for the summer — played golf later that day.

Before his mother left their home in Augusta for her weekly bicycle ride, she gave Colton a hug, told him she would see him later that night and walked out of the door.

As Colton and Michael played table tennis and watched TV, Colton would soon find out he had hugged his mother for the last time.

“A few hours later, my dad came downstairs and said ‘hey, we gotta go

check on mom,’” Colton said. “I didn’t have any idea of what was going on.”

Colton’s father, Thomas, received a phone call from a friend in Colorado who informed him of an automobile-bicycle accident in Kalamazoo County.

Colton immediately tried to contact his mother. He called her 10 times. He sent numerous text messages.

There was no response.

Colton and his father rushed to where the accident occurred. Both were unaware of the severity of the incident.

“It was about a 20-minute drive. With every passing phone call and text where I didn’t get a response, more and more, (it) was setting in like ‘Alright something bad might have happened here,’” Colton said.

When the father and son turned onto the street where the accident occurred, they were met by a sea of police cars, fire trucks and paramedics stretching nearly a mile down the road.

The road was blocked off, so Colton was forced to walk through a commotion that he said will stay with him for the rest of his life.

“That’s just a scene I’m never going to forget,” Colton said. “Walking down that street toward the accident, not knowing what had happened until the police had a chance to explain what had happened.”

Four miles into their bike ride, Debra and eight other members of “The Chain Gang” bicycle group were struck from behind by a pickup truck.

Five of the bicyclists were killed including Colton’s mother. She was 53 years old.

Charles Pickett, 50, was charged with five counts of operating while intoxicated casuing death and second-degree murder.

Devastated, Colton tried to wrap his mind around losing his mother.

Meanwhile, Michael was by his side.

“He stepped up and acted like a brother immediately,” Colton said. “Having him there the entire time let me know how great a friend he was and he’s always going to be a part of my life.”

MICHAEL’S LOSS Just like Michael was there for Colton through his unexpected loss, Michael experienced a death in his family two months later and needed Colton’s support.

On Aug. 12, Michael’s younger sister Katherine went downstairs to let their sister, Emily, know they were heading to the store.

“That’s when the whole world came crashing down,” Michael said.

Emily, 17, was exercising when her heart suddenly stopped.

Katherine found Emily unresponsive and alerted Michael, who then alerted his mother and then called 9-1-1.

“My first instinct was to go get my mom and get her down there and have her by her side,” Michael said. “It was just hectic from there.

It was all a blur.”

Michael’s sister, Emily, died.

There was no explanation for her death.

The family is still waiting for the autopsy report.

After hearing about the passing of Michael’s sister, Colton immediately traveled to Michael’s hometown of Fonthill, Canada to provide support.

“He was there for me,” Colton said. “His family came and supported my family during that tough time. The fact that he and his family made the sacrifice to come so far to be with my family, there was no way I wasn’t going Monica Bradburn | Photo Editor to be there for him.”

said he believes both Colton and Michael will forever be connected by their similar experiences and are reassured in the affirmation of being able to seek comfort in one another.

“They can relate to each other on a totally different level,” Opalewski said. “Like it or not, their lives changed. There will always be a gap, but they have an opportunity to at least talk to each other and listen to each other. They’ve got a deeper understanding of how the other one is thinking.”

Although his sister wasn’t the biggest baseball fan, Michael her spiritual presence helps him on and off the field.

“The game of baseball has changed drastically for me,” Michael said. “I know she’s there with me. I know she’s there pushing me forward and keeping me on track to be the best that I can be.”

CMU opened its fall exhibition season on Sept. 20.

Their coach said he has noticed both men are more committed to baseball than before.

“In each of them, there’s a little depth to what they want to accomplish,” he said. “Something was taken away from each of them that they’ll never replace, and the only way they can pay tribute is how they go about their lives, how they represent their families.”

What took place over the summer will bond

Colton and Michael, and the team will continue to support them, Jaska said.

“All we can do is hope and pray and give them the best guidance we can to sustain an emotional and difficult loss for both of them,” Jaksa said.

Neither Colton or Michael have a biological brother, but through their loyalty to one another during these unforgettable moments, they created a bond that will forever be deeper than just being teammates.

“We’ve been so much closer than ever,” Colton said. “I consider Mike to be my brother. We were good friends before. After everything that happened, he’s a part of my family and I feel like I’m a part of his.”

With more diverse students, CMU must become more inclusive

D

iversity, minority enrollment and campus-wide inclusion are now the stated priorities of Central Michigan University for the next four years.

University President George Ross outlined CMU’s new diversity goals last week at the Sept. 22 Board of Trustees meeting. In his remarks, Ross reported that overall minority enrollment is up to 5,398 students belonging to a non-white ethnic group. That number is up from 3,267 minority students enrolled in the 2015-16 academic year.

Ross explained his data shows minority freshman enrollment topping out at 22 percent this year, and 16 percent minority enrollment overall. He also outlined the university’s goal to hit 20 percent overall minority enrollment by 2020.

It’s a goal Ross said goes beyond simple metrics and diversity quotas. The president said he wants CMU to “look” like the rest of the state by recruiting from typically Black and Latino Michigan high schools and community colleges. In 2014, CMU specifically opened a satellite Global Campus outpost and classroom in downtown Detroit to forward that goal.

We applaud the university’s efforts to make CMU more diverse and inclusive by trying to recruit students from a wide range of cultures and ethnicities. We ask that Ross and his cabinet continue to take that charge seriously by consistently addressing the divide between white and non-white students on campus.

The first step in easing racial tensions is admitting we have a problem.

On Thursday, Ross and other trustees confirmed a long-held narrative that CMU is a

predominantly white school with a history of poor race relations on campus. Three different CMU diversity studies released last year support that narrative. At least 60 percent of students of color felt CMU wasn’t doing enough to promote diversity on campus.

Another 40 percent felt discriminated against at CMU and Mount Pleasant. Ross gave voice to many frustrated students of color by acknowledging these facts in an open meeting and vowing small steps to address them.

His words now obligate the university to take pointed action.

A good way to start is by offering more diversity programs for awareness and inclusion activities. Ross can also engage in more face-to-face forums like last year’s Walking Together event.

The forum was supposed to be the “first of many” conversations on race issues at CMU and in Mount Pleasant.

Students expressed mixed feelings about the effectiveness of the forums. It did, however, lay the framework for CMU’s new diversity goals.

Ross leveled with students at that Walking Together event by sharing his experiences of racism and prejudice in the years preceding his presidency.

It was a stark admission from a university president who is decidedly pensive in his approach to university affairs – including previ-

ous conversations on race.

If Ross and CMU administrators are truly dedicated to diversity and inclusion, we would like to seem them schedule a Walking Together event each semester for the next four years, improving the quality of discussion and extending student question and answer sessions.

Ross can lead by example with experience. As we tackle race issues on campus, we can also begin to think broader to other groups within our campus community.

Inclusion goals should include everyone on campus, with individual plans meeting individual group needs.

That includes resources for women and LGBT students.

Race issues are complex. Surmounting them mandates a calculated, methodical response. That seems to fit Ross’ personality to a tee. We hope that his call for greater diversity is met with swift action instead of empty rhetoric.

Students may or may not immediately see the effects of enrolling a couple thousand more people of color, but it’s a start. Before that number grows, addressing issues of race on the front end is a natural conclusion and preemptive strike against intolerance and hate.

Instead of staying close to home, young people are moving into the hive of Silicon Valley and other tech hubs looking to become skilled techies. As older generations of tech workers begin to retire, the existing gap between younger and older workers widens.

This is a looming crisis for Michigan businesses and the state’s economy as a whole.

When young and skilled labor migrates out of state, all the income, and property and sales taxes they contribute dries up. That’s revenue that could have been used for local primary, second-

That money can’t be recycled back into the economy if they leave.

Michigan’s existing tech infrastructure problems require solutions from those defecting techies.

Michigan’s information industry made $3.8 billion, but spent $14.1 billion on trying to recoup those lost skills from other states. Shipping out money and jobs while not investing in our public schools to create jobs demonstrates a complete lack of foresight from those in power.

To put this into better perspective, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Michigan only employed 102,330 Computer and Mathematical jobs in May 2015. Virginia employed 195,140, nearly double the number despite having a lower population.

It’s not just Virginia: New Jersey and North Carolina have similar populations to Michigan, and they both employ more tech workers than we do.

This problem can’t be solved unilaterally, but President Barack Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton know that it will take initiative from state and local leaders. Following in the footsteps of Obama’s “Computer Science For All” initiative, which gives $4 billion in fund-

ing for states, Clinton said she will double that number. She also hopes to offer other benefits that will provide and improve computer science courses in public schools.

More importantly, she wants to make the “New Markets Tax Credit” permanent. Investors could claim the tax credit and owe less in taxes if they invest in local projects. This allows start-ups to operate without fear of repaying loans taken out from banks.

With proper funding and healthy economic soil for youth to plant their roots, Michigan could see a tech surge. But first, Clinton needs to win against Republican nominee Donald Trump in November.

Neither Trump, his running mate nor his network of surrogates have mentioned the tech industry. Instead, they’ve focused on blue-collar physical labor industries like coal and steel, industries whose markets are steeply declining.

Under a Trump administration, Michigan could never reach the benefits of a booming tech industry.

Board of Trustees: University exceeds 2016 diversity goal

By 2020, University President George Ross wants to see a student body that’s 20 percent multicultural.

Given the demographic within this year’s freshman class, the university is on track to accomplish that goal sooner than Ross expected.

This year’s freshman class is 22 percent multicultural. In all, 5,398 minority students are enrolled at CMU. That figure boosts the overall diversity on campus to 16 percent.

Ross emphasized not only was this year’s freshman class the most diverse, but one of the smartest, with the “highest mean ACT score” in university history at 23.1 — an increase from last year’s 22.9.

The goal of CMU, Ross said, is to “represent who we are as a state.”

“Unfortunately, I still run into people across the country who think multicultural increases means a university is lowering their standards,” Ross said. “Being diverse strengthens us as a university.

You are going to work with people who don’t look or think like you. Our goal is to have a microcosm of that at CMU. This will prepare you better for when you leave.”

Overall on-campus enrollment, however, is down 2.5 percent as noted in the Sept. 21 Academic and Student Affairs Committee meeting. Total CMU enrollment is also down 3.3 percent.

Steven Johnson, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services, said he predicts Global Campus enrollment also will decrease from last year due to increasing competition with other university’s online programs.

CMU is not just looking to improve its enrollment.

A financial risk assessment survey was presented before the board during Thursday’s meeting.

CMU’s Enterprise Risk Committee, an internal organization comprised of faculty and staff members, is hoping to present a report by September 2017 outlining possible financial and physical risks the university could face.

Provost Michael Gealt said use of an external auditing company was never considered for the risk assessment as there is “all kinds of good information available through the Association of Governing Boards.”

According to the committee’s university webpage, the goal of the group is to identify risks that have the “potential to jeopardize the life and safety of individuals” or “threaten (university) assets, operations, reputation and legal interests.”

Services and Co-Chair of the committee Barrie Wilkes said the group has identified the 10 “most significant risk categories.” These have been divided into subgroups to further identify potential niche risks.

Categories include academic affairs, board of governance, campus and facilities, compliance risk, research and creative endeavors and student affairs, among others.

The committee plans to share the document with individual groups identified in the assessment including Academic Senate, faculty, staff and the Student Government Association. When risks have been identified the groups will work together to identify the likelihood of the risk happening and how to react if one should occur.

Trustee Bill Weideman said he was impressed with the committee’s commitment to try and anticipate potential crisis situations.

“We can’t avoid risk. Risk is there,” he said. “The key is understanding the risks (the university faces) and mitigating it. This is an excellent start to an excellent process.”

Pharmaceutical journal features research by professor, student

A nose for science and an interest in nasal spray medication landed a Central Michigan University professor and student on the cover of a journal published by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

Jinxiang Xi, a faculty member of the College of Science and Engineering, and Shang Hai senior Yu Zhang focused on studying nose-to-brain drug delivery. The two were hoping to dramatically change the medical field by developing direct ways to deliver drugs to the brain for neurological disorder treatment. Xi said he hopes this will be used to change the market for the next generation of neurological medications, shifting treatments toward nasal delivery systems.

Xi and Zhang were featured on the cover of the June 2016 edition of “Pharmaceutical Research,” a predominant research journal of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

College of Science and Technology Dean Ian Davison said CMU is exceptional at including undergraduate students in research. Xi’s lab demonstrates the sentiment.

Zhang has been working with Xi for two years, and has had his work published in three publications since working under Xi. This is a rare achievement for an undergraduate student, Xi said.

“It has been a very good position to be working with Dr. Xi,” Zhang said.

Zhang has dedicated numerous hours toward this research. He is often tasked with data analysis, running computer simulations and conducting experiments.

had to work all night for these projects,” he said. “Sometimes I want to get data done, and I can’t leave it all night or I would have to start it all over, so I work overnight to analyze.”

Zhang said he does not mind the hours because he feels fulfilled by problem solving.

HOW SPRAYS WORK Treatment for neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and HIV is administered through injection or oral intake. Delivering medications through the nasal cavity, however, would make treatment more efficient and less expensive.

Xi explained medication reaches the brain through blood circulation. This can be a difficult task because the brain has a structural defense called the blood brain barrier.

This barrier helps the brain separate toxic chemicals in the bloodstream out and keep

them from reaching the brain.

As a result, many medications are also rejected in the process.

Only 2 percent of a drug administered this way can make it past the blood brain barrier, Xi said. This is very wasteful and expensive considering the high price of most neurological medications.

The olfactory region, part of the sensory system responsible for sense of smell, contains nerves that directly connect to the brain, bypassing blood brain barrier filtering.

“Finding a technique to more efficiently deliver medications can have massive economic impact,” Xi said. “If we deliver drugs to here, the drugs can follow the passageway of the nerves and get into the brain.”

At this point, only certain treatments for migraines use the nasal cavity as a drug delivery method, Xi said. He believes his research will open the door to expand the method to treatment

for other disorders.

The purpose of Dr. Xi’s research, stated in his article “Visualization and Quantification of Nasal and Olfactory Deposition in a Sectional Adult Nasal Airway Cast,” was to compare drug deposition, or where the medication is reaching in the nose and olfactory region, between different delivery devices. Xi specifically looked at nose sprays and nebulizers.

He also compared different techniques when using these devices by studying deposition patterns based on specific placement of drug administration within the nose.

VISUALIZING RESEARCH Xi’s goal was to create a clear visualization of these drug deposition patterns. He did this by using a “Sar-Gel based colorimetry method,” meaning he used color to measure deposit patterns.

Davison said research journals often choose research

projects with aesthetic appeal to feature on journal covers. The Sar-Gel used in Xi’s work made his project visually stunning.

Sar-Gel is a tool traditionally used by plumbers to follow water and find potential leakages, Xi said. This works, because when the gel is combined with water, the water turns a florescent, hot pink color.

Xi used water with Sar-Gel as an experimental technique to demonstrate exactly where drug particles were being deposited, when administered with different devices at different places.

As a result, the images captured during research were vibrant.

In addition to attractiveness, Xi said research journals also select cover stories representing exciting developments in the field, which applies to his study.

Xi said many studies have tried to create this visualization before, but have been unsuccessful.

“We are the first group to directly show internal deposition patterns of the nasal

cavity,” he said.

Xi’s success in visualization can be attributed to the detailed nasal cavity models he created for research, which he described to be some of the best models available.

By using MRI data, he was able to build the nasal airway inside the nose and print models of the system using a 3D printer.

“Building a nasal cavity model is not an easy job,” Xi said. “We overcame this because we are more than engineers. We are artists.”

Xi explained the nasal cavity is a complex structure, with many layers. The nasal structure needs to be complex because it is responsible for filtering out the toxic particles inhaled on a daily basis from the air.

A single model takes three months to complete, Xi said.

The process is difficult because of how the model must be built, patching together pieces of the cavities in small sections to create the larger cast.

Because the nasal cavity is excellent at filtering out toxic particles, and because researchers have had difficulty visualizing how medication is deposited in the nose, it has been difficult to develop neurological medications working through the olfactory region.

In his research results regarding nasal spray devices, Xi was able to vividly demonstrate that the devices are ineffective.

“We are the first group to show how clearly it is not feasible for nasal spray to deliver drugs to the olfactory region,” he said.

This is why Xi believes his work towards creating medication deposit visualization will change the field. He found nebulizers are much more effective for drug delivery because deposit relies more on natural breathing airflow.

Biosciences Building opens, will host classes next semester

By Jan. 2017, the 169,000 square-foot, long-awaited Biosciences Building will house faculty from the biology department and offer classes to students studying the biological sciences after months of construction.

The ribbons were cut on the largest capital project in university history Thursday during the grand opening of the $95 million Biosciences Building.

The event featured speeches from University President George Ross, members of the CMU Board of Trustees and faculty. Following the ribbon cutting, graduate students using the new facility for research gave attendees a tour of the building.

“This building demonstrates our commitment to advancing STEM programs and providing academic experiences that are second to none,” Ross said. “From their first months on campus, our students have a chance to gain unparalleled research experience and this building will enhance that.”

The building will house

40 faculty, from multiple colleges and five departments, dedicated to research and education in the biosciences. Students will have the opportunity to work directly with professors on research that will provide the experience necessary to join the professional world, Ross said.

“One of the reasons we don’t call this a biology building is because bioscience is broader than what was defined as biology 15 (to) 30 years ago,” Provost Michael Gealt said. “This building is spectacular and will allow great things to happen in biology, in the largest terms.”

Board of Trustees Chair Sarah Opperman explained how the project’s ideation began in 2002.

It was just a conversation, Opperman said, but a tour of Brooks Hall highlighted the necessity for a new research-based science building.

“Every detail of this building serves a purpose in providing students with the hands-on learning that we value and that employers seek,” Opperman said.

“Most importantly, this building supports student success. We are all commit-

ted in everything we do, no matter what our respective responsibilities are.”

Brent Piligian, a senior studying Biomedical Sciences, said he is jealous of incoming students who are going to be able to use the new building in their academic studies. He said CMU’s commitment to student research allowed him to co-author four papers and present his research at national conferences.

“The opportunity to take part in undergraduate research has significantly changed my life,” Piligian said. “I have always wanted to go to medical school, but now I know the integration of medicine and research is in my future.”

Tracy Galarowicz, chairperson of the Biology Department, said faculty were encouraged to say or share what they wanted and expected in the new building. Instructors began moving in Sept. 9. All 40 faculty members will be settled in by the end of October.

“Our own students will be building their own memories in biosciences,” Galarowicz said. “Their experience in this building is going to be a part of their CMU experience.”

Students organize Black Lives Matter demonstration to protest police violence

About 50 student activists gathered Thursday in support of the Black Lives Matter movement near the Charles V. Park Library to protest the shooting of African-American Terence Crutcher.

The demonstration was planned by Registered Student Organization Justus League in response to Crutcher’s death in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was reported by various news outlets Crutcher was unarmed and waiting for help after his SUV broke down on the side of the road.

Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby was charged with manslaughter in the first degree for the shooting.

by a police officer after they responded to the broken down car.

“Most of these shootings you hear about really hit home,” said Brianna Haynes, Justus League’s vice president. “Black men are taught they might have to comply for their own safety.”

The Saginaw resident said the shootings make her worry about her father, who is the same age as Crutcher. She worries he could be potentially viewed as intimidating to law enforcement because of his large physical stature.

The group of demonstrators shared frustrations and other stories of racial injustice at the protest. They talked about their experiences with racial profiling by police, as well as the importance of voting in elections.

were mostly civil toward the demonstrators. In the crowd were two Central Michigan University Police officers, one holding hands with students.

“We want to let people know what’s going on,” said Davis, a Redford junior. “I think social media shields a lot. People don’t realize this has been going on for years.”

Justus League is a hip hop music organization that helps artists on campus promote their work. The group is also known for participating in social justice events on campus.

Haynes said the issue of racial profiling is heightened with the upcoming election, especially with a history of minority reluctance to show up to the polls.

“Our vote really does matter,” Haynes said. “We need to show our voice.”

Injuries, kicking game plague CMU as MAC play begins

After finishing its nonconference schedule with a 49-35 loss to Virginia on Saturday, Central Michigan football faces its first Mid-American Conference opponent Saturday in Kelly/Shorts Stadium: undefeated Western Michigan.

Second-year head coach John Bonamego said his team didn’t play well in any phase of Saturday’s game.

Bonamego insisted his squad wasn’t looking ahead to its matchup with the Broncos.

“We haven’t talked about Western yet,” he said. “All that talk comes from the media. Inside our locker room, no one has talked about that. We just didn’t play well. This is a game of execution. When you drop balls, miss tackles and let people behind you in coverage, that’s when you get beat. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing or what their record is.”

Sitting at 4-0, WMU heads to Mount Pleasant coming off a 49-31 victory against Georgia Southern at Waldo Stadium.

WMU could be ranked in the AP Top 25 when it plays the Chippewas at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1.

With conference play beginning this week, here’s three takeaways from the Chippewas’ nonconference schedule.

RUSH- LED PASSING ATTACK IS SOLID Senior quarterback Cooper Rush has led a Chippewa offense averaging 43 points per game,

highlighted by a six touchdown performance against UNLV in week three.

Prior to the season, a lack of a running game was considered a weak-point in CMU’s offense. Rush’s passing ability has been enough to sustain drives and win three of CMU’s four games.

The Chippewas totaled 1,359 passing yards against its nonconference opponents and ran for 545.

Despite lacking a consistent running game, CMU beat its first four opponents in time of possession by more than 26 minutes.

Rush is the NCAA leader in passing yards and continues to add to his total of 10,713 yards. He sits in second place in CMU history behind Dan LeFevour, needing 2,192 yards to break the all-time record.

FIELD GOAL KICKING IS INCONSISTENT Senior kicker Brian Eavey has been struggling with accuracy as of late, missing four consecutive field goals dating back to last week’s game against UNLV where he missed three.

Despite this, Bonamego and players have expressed confidence in Eavey, citing strong wind as a factor in his three missed field goals against UNLV. Bonamego said a bad hold was the reason Eavey missed his one attempt against the Cavaliers.

“I think it was on the hold. Mark (Chapman) is nursing an ankle and Brian (Eavey’s) foot clipped Mark’s

toe. The spot was too close to his foot, so when Brian swung through, they clicked toes,” Bonamego said.

“That’s why the ball came off the way it did. It happened once earlier in the week, but we thought it was corrected. It didn’t show up on any of the extra points, it just came up on that field goal.”

Last season, Eavey was 16-of-24 on field goal attempts, with each of his misses coming from greater than 40 yards away.

His last four misses have each been on a 40-plus yard attempt.

Pelafas’ goal gives her 10 this season, tying her for second nationally in total goals. Kristen Knutson got the win in goal for CMU. CMU lost 4-0 against Northern Illinois on Friday in DeKalb.

The Chippewas (9-1-0, 1-1-0 MAC) host Miami (OH) at 6 p.m. Friday.

VOLLEYBALL DROPS FIRST TWO MAC MATCHES Following a spirited 3-2 loss at Ball State on Friday, the Central Michigan volleyball team finished the opening weekend of MAC play 0-2 after a 3-0 loss to Toledo on Saturday.

“We came out flat in the beginning and we never really recovered from that,” said head coach Mike Gawlik. “We had incredible fight the night before.

We were all waiting for that push to get back in the match and I’m a little frustrated we never really found it.”

Junior outside hitter Jordan Bueter ended the weekend with a team-high 31 kills. Freshman defensive specialist Megan Kern led the team in digs with 32.

After beginning the season with 14 consecutive road games, the Chippewas (6-8, 0-2 MAC) will play their first home match at 7 p.m. Friday against Northern Illinois (10-4, 2-0) at McGuirk Arena.
