TRIAL DATE RESCHEDULED FOR NOV. 1 FOR FORMER FACULTY MEMBER Former Central Michigan University faculty member Mark Ranzenberger’s trial has been rescheduled for Nov. 1.

Arrested in May for possession of child pornography, Ranzenberger has until Oct. 17 to file a plea.

A police investigation began after he unknowingly displayed thumbnails of pornographic images from his computer on a classroom projector.

The U.S. Code states a conviction for possession of child pornography carries a sentence between five and 20 years in prison.

A U.S. Secret Service criminal complaint filed May 19 states Ranzenberger admitted to Sgt. Mike Morrow of the Central Michigan University Police

Department he had obtained the images from a German website.

The complaint also said Ranzenberger admitted to creating a document detailing how to “groom” a child from birth to age 11 to be receptive to participating in sexual acts. He told Morrow the document was “purely fantasy.”

Ranzenberger also told U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Chris Cruze he had accessed a bulletin board sometime between 2004 and 2006 and downloaded several zip files containing pornographic images of children.

SGA TO MEET MONDAY, STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR OPEN SENATOR POSITIONS Students will have the ability to represent academic colleges and organizations if they run for a senate position at the first Student Government Association meeting of the year.

At 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19 in the Bovee University Center Rotunda, SGA will have a general meeting to introduce the new school year and approve a budget.

They also will be hosting emergency senate elections and ask members what kind of culture they want to see in the future of SGA. SGA is a voice for students to promote change in university administration policy. One of their most well-known achievements was the creation of Gentle Thursday and Friday, established in the 1960s. They have also extended library hours and increased campus program funding.

said SGA is for all class standings who are passionate about making a difference and wishes to take on the responsibility of being a leader on campus.

“All I need is students interested in making CMU a better place,” Elliott said.

“I wish we had (more) freshmen. No one brings a fresher perspective.”

SGA is made up of two bodies: a house of representatives, which represents many of the Registered Student Organizations on campus, and a senate where students are elected to represent different departments and academic groups.

The organization draft bills that, if passed by both bodies, are put before the administration for approval. If CMU officials approve of a bill, it has the potential to become university policy.

Three federal courts block state ban on ‘straight-ticket voting,’ for now In January, Gov. Rick Snyder signed a bill banning a popular voting option that allows citizens to cast full ballots along party lines — a move now deemed unconstitutional by three major federal courts.

Legislators refer to the option as “straightticket” voting. Michigan is one of only 10 states to use this option on statewide ballots.

The ban would throw out the straight-ticket option before the Nov. 8 election. Voting with a straight ticket means you vote for every Democratic or Republican Party candidate by filling in one bubble at the beginning of each ballot.

Snyder said his goal was to create a more informed voter bloc, forcing people to research a full slate of candidates before showing up to the polls. He called it putting “people over politics.”

Though the ban passed with majority Republican support, its constitutionality was in question from the start.

Activists and opposing lawmakers argued the ban would place an extra undue burden on voters, particularly those who must wait in long lines to vote each election. They filed a lawsuit against the ban shortly thereafter.

In July, Judge Gershwin A. Drain of the Federal District Court in Detroit temporarily blocked the law from taking effect before Nov. 8. He called it discriminatory against

African-American voters in districts like Detroit, which experience some of the longest voter wait times in the state.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Shuette kept appealing.

The three-judge panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals denied the state’s request to revive the law. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the same request in a brief.

We applaud the plaintiffs of the lawsuit and the three larger federal courts for blocking the ban ahead of the November election.

We agree with Snyder that voters should be aware of who and what issues they support with their ballots. We do not believe banning straightticket voting options achieve that goal.

Discrimination was a major point of contention for each of the justices involved. In his initial ruling, Drain cited data showing a disproportionate number of African-Americans used straightticket voting in the last general election.

We can easily argue the same, but the implications of the ban are broader. They would affect more people than just African-Americans in places like Detroit.

Filling out a full ballot is time-consuming.

Doing so would indisputably create longer lines at polling locations. Longer lines typically deter voters from showing up to the polls. Staying put once they arrive becomes harder as the lines grow longer.

This is especially true for working people and younger voters. In both cases, job and school obligations are difficult to avoid.

It is also unrealistic for the legislature to assume all college students and working people with families have time to research candidates before Election

Day. Voting should be quick, easy and without unnecessary roadblocks.

Three different sets of federal court judges and justices understood the implications and stopped just short of overturning the ban. That’s the good news.

The bad news is the ban still exists once the courts lift their injunctions after Election Day. Michigan’s legislature has yet another chance at reviving it in its next session.

We call on the Michigan legislature to dismantle the ban in its entirety.

At present, State Rep. Jon Hoadley proposed legislation to repeal the ban. We call on all representatives in the State House to join his push for a repeal.

We can debate whether Snyder and his allies were working to cover their electoral losses or to create well-informed voters.

The truth is that any attack on the ease of voting is an attack on civil liberty. Any attempt to revive the ban again is an attack on the voting rights of ordinary Michigan citizens.

If lawmakers choose to make voting more difficult, they should do us — the voters — the courtesy of making Election Day a statewide holiday.

If our politicians are so deeply concerned about voter awareness, they should refocus their energy on campaigns fueled by facts, instead of vitriol and divisive rhetoric.

We both might learn something about the nature of our democracy in the process — something a straight-ticket ban would never accomplish.

The problem with bananas I loathe bananas. Maybe it’s the texture, or maybe it’s the taste.

They’re overpowering with other foods. You never hear of “just a hint of banana.” It’s all or nothing with bananas.

A banana ruined my 2006 summer vacation to Disney World. My dad wouldn’t let us leave for the parks until I finished every bite of my breakfast — which included an awful, gooey banana.

If I didn’t eat the banana, he said, we weren’t going at all. So I took a bite, and sneakily spit it into my napkin. My father caught me and yelled until I started to cry. I tried it one more time and promptly vomited.

We didn’t leave for another five hours. I was mad at my father, but I was more upset with bananas.

Bananas leave a bad taste in my mouth, and so does racial prejudice. You see, in the Asian community, calling someone a “banana” is a derogatory term used to describe someone out of touch with their culture. Yellow on the outside, white on the inside;

similar to how some African-Americans are called an “Oreo” if they don’t fit into the stereotype.

These underlying connotations, when used among Asians, act as indifference against people of the same heritage. It implies a need for whitewashing, or seeking out benefits of white privilege.

Some people believe that a disconnect between heritage and cultural expression is a harmful and dangerous thing. For second-generation AsianAmericans like myself, we find ourselves at a crossroad on this.

I was born and raised in America. American culture is my culture. Is that assimilation, and is it a

My high school impressions of Greek Life was limited to the movie “Animal House,” or those Greeks that made the negative evening news.

When I rushed back in spring 2016, I went to many different events for all kinds of fraternities.

In the end, I accepted my bid from Alpha Sigma Phi, a place I now call home.

I was not looking for the fraternity with the most popularity, nor the one with the most awards. I was looking for people I could connect

This week is Rush Week, giving prospective brothers and sisters a chance to find out what Greek Life can do for their lives — on campus and well after they graduate. It’s a time to take stock of the good Greeks can and often do for their communities.

The influence and impact of a new culture on immigrants depends on when you came to the States.

I’d feel like an imposter if I claimed to have a stronger connection with Filipino culture, so I don’t.

I can’t speak Tagalog. I don’t enjoy playing basketball. I’ve only watched one Manny Pacquiao fight on Pay-Per-View.

You can call me a banana, but what does that really mean? My parents immigrated with the intention of exposing their kids to American culture. I should be able to claim my Filipino heritage even though I am a product of America.

It’s my decision alone to identify with whatever ethnicity I hold, and the cultures I’m exposed to. Still, the stigma follows me everywhere.

Eddie Huang is an accomplished chef and author.

He’s also one of my favorite television personalities.

Huang spoke at Central Michigan University in 2014 while promoting his new book, “Fresh Off The Boat.”

It details his upbringing as a Chinese-Taiwanese American after his family moved from Washington D.C. to Orlando. The popular TV show with the

same name on ABC is based off his book.

For some people of color, assimilation is rejection in order to achieve acceptance — a rejection in favor of a dominant culture that is easier to connect with.

Huang fiercely rejected white culture in Orlando during his childhood, which led to feelings of anger and resentment.

The night of his address, I wore my Philippines jacket, newly bought at the Manila Airport the previous summer. I was waiting in line to meet him, and a girl walked up to me. She saw the flag on my jacket and said “Mabuhay!” That means hello in Tagalog, the most prominent dialect in the Philippines. She rattled off two sentences in Tagalog that I didn’t follow. I told her that I’m not fluent at all.

She flashed a pained smile and sauntered away. I’m sure I disappointed her. There aren’t many Filipinos on campus. When you finally run into another one and find out that they don’t know their native tongue, it’s easy to be let down.

As for myself, it seems that I’m the personification of a banana — an odd situation to deal with for a human who loathes bananas.

Just ask Danielle Schmidtman of Alpha Gamma Delta. She said the best part of joining Greek Life was having someone to look up to. Most fraternities and sororities give new members a “big” brother or sister who helps guide you as a parental figure. Schmidtman’s big helped her adjust to schoolwork and the responsibilities of being on her own for the first time. “(My big) was always someone I could go to if I had questions about anything, and that meant the world to me,” Schmidtman told me.

It’s about helping those involved in Panhellenic activates, but especially those who are not pledged and bid Greek. Supporting the broader community is the charge of each fraternity and sorority member at CMU. Each group has their own philanthropies which raise money to donate to good causes.

The brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon create and run events that raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital was founded to help parents of patients pay for their treatment. It

is funded primarily through charitable donations.

“Knowing our donations help give these children a fighting chance, without hurting their family’s financial situation (in the process), is a really cool feeling,” said brother Drew Van Hees, of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Fraternities and sororities represent being a part of something bigger than the individuals involved.

They help you find friends that you will cherish for a lifetime. Garrett Ritterhaus of Phi Kappa Tau described the experience better than I ever could.

“Honestly, the things that make Greek Life worth it aren’t the huge events,” Ritterhaus said.

“It’s the 10 minutes you have in between classes where you see everybody you know through Greek Life.”

Forging bonds. Upholding community values.

That’s what it means to be Greek, despite all of the negative stereotypes that plague us daily.

To my fellow Greeks: stay safe, make good choices and have fun this week. To any Chippewas who are interested in becoming new members of Greek Life: welcome to the family.

NEW LEADER IN FACILITIES MANAGEMENT HAS ‘BIG SHOES TO FILL’ REPLACING LAWRENCE Jonathan Webb was named Central Michigan University’s associate vice president for facilities management Tuesday, replacing Steve Lawrence, who retires Sept. 30.

Webb currently serves as consolidated facility and site manager for Boeing Service Company in Springfield, Virginia.

He has 26 years of experience in providing engineering and support services for large operations. This includes airfields, ground-based space, missile systems and data centers, administrative and medical facilities, fuels storage and distribution systems, and housing and dormitories.

Chair of the search committee Barrie Wilkes, associate vice president of finance and administration, said he was impressed with Webb’s experience leading teams in projects for large government complexes and military installations. “(Webb has) been responsible for a lot of big infrastructure,” Wilkes said. “What

really impressed me was his personality and the way he interacted with groups and with me individually.”

During the national search, Wilkes said the characteristics he was Jonathan Webb looking in candidates for included experience in construction and facilities operations, good leadership and communication skills, as well as someone committed to sustainability.

Webb was one of two finalists for the position. His resume and ability to interact with groups embodies those characteristics, Wilkes said.

“He has big shoes to fill,” Wilkes said. “I believe (Webb) will be a good team leader for facilities management here at CMU.” - McKenzie Sanderson, Staff Reporter

POLICE IDENTIFY SUSPECTS IN LARCENY INVESTIGATION, NO NAMES RELEASED The Central Michigan University Police Department has identified two students suspected of stealing from CMUPD | Courtesy Photo several vehicles in Parking Lot 1 in north campus.

The suspects, two men ages 19 and 20, stole a CD and a phone case around 9:15 p.m. on Sept. 8. The items

stolen had a total estimated value of $26. On Sept. 9, the Central Michigan University Police Department released photos taken of the men seen entering several cars in the parking lot.

Police have since interviewed the suspects, who admitted to entering the vehicles.

Lt. Cameron Wassman of CMUPD said because incident is still under investigation, the names of the people cannot be released. Police intend to forward the matter to the Isabella County Prosecutor’s Office.

Biosciences Building open to biology classes in January

After two years of construction and $95 million, Central Michigan University is ready to open its largest capital project in history.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, the university will host a grand opening for the newly-completed Biosciences Building. In January 2017, the 169,000 square-foot facility will house faculty from the biology department, and offer classes to students studying the biological sciences.

“My office looked out over what has for years been a construction site,” said College of Science and Engineering Dean Ian Davison.

“It’s fulfilling to have seen it gradually rise from the mud and become a new science building.”

The new facility features a variety of innovations designed to make it more efficient for education, including: • Lab space for students and faculty • Classrooms designed for hands-on learning • Microscopic imaging area • Two aquariums and an herbarium • Two living walls to show off plant life • Study spaces The project was funded with $65 million from the university from reserves, issuance of bonds and private donations, Davison said. The other $30 million was allocated from the state of Michigan.

Davison said research was a priority in designing the new building.

“In this college, and others, we emphasize the involvement of both graduate and undergraduate students in research — that’s very important for us,” Davison said.

“We want students to work on cutting-edge projects that will be

published in top scientific journals and produce meaningful results.”

Biology professor Joanne Dannenhoffer has taught in Brooks Hall, for years. She said it was a challenge carving out teaching space in the 30-year-old building, and that it’s time for an improvement.

“There’s just item, after item, after item that Brooks doesn’t have.

This new building is going to be a modern, high tech environment that is going to be supportive of research,” she said.

Biology professor Brad Swanson agreed.

“It’s a night and day difference from Brooks. Everything is new, everything works and it’s just a big improvement. I think the students are going to love it. It’s an incredibly student friendly space and I hope that they’ll use it as intended.”

Allison Kneisel, a second year graduate student, said the new building will allow her to more easily collaborate with professors and students when working on research.

“There’s an impressive factor about it,” said the Traverse City native. “You walk in and you have a living wall and two aquariums and you can remind students that biology is a living thing and not just stuffy, dusty, buildings.”

Jessica Kosiara, a biology lab research tech from Alpena, is studying a species of yellow perch from the Great Lakes. She said the new building will be a huge improvement for all students.

“It’s really exciting because we’ll have a state-of-the-art facility, and there’s a lot of really exciting op-

portunities for everyone,” said the third year graduate student.

Steve Lawrence has worked as the Associate Vice President of Facilities Management for 13 years. He said the Biosciences Building is the largest project he’s been involved with, includes several design elements that make it more environmentally friendly than previous buildings.

Many of the construction materials were sourced locally to prevent transportation energy costs, Lawrence said. Also, more than 78 percent of materials left over from the construction process were recycled, Lawrence said.

Other sustainable elements in the design include: • Fritted glass that reduces energy consumption for air conditioning • Sensors for controlling lights and AC equipment • A vegetative roof to reduce heat gain • Low flow plumbing fixtures to reduce water usage The university has applied the Biosciences Building for LEED certification — a rating system that awards building projects that focus on sustainability. Lawrence said the project will receive LEED Gold certification, the second highest that a project can be awarded.

Lawrence is retiring at the end of September and said this is the last big project he’ll be working on.

“I’m looking forward to retirement, and the bioscience building is a great accomplishment and it’s a great way to end my career.”

is going to start about how to improve Brooks Hall for future use. He said even with the Biosciences Building, CMU’s bioscience research is still lagging but added,

the building project is a “quantum leap forward in terms of quantity and quality.”

“This building is a means to an end, and the end is to provide the

best education for our students,” Davison said. “We’ll be able to provide even better opportunities because of this new building and that’s really the exciting part.”

As buzz from viral summer winds down, app still popular among dedicated fans

It was nearing 2 a.m. and music blared from the Fabiano Botanical Garden on Central Michigan University’s campus. More than 20 students huddled together, enthralled by the Pokemon Go that became the pop culture hit of the summer.

That was in July, when the mobile application was first released, totaling 7.5 million downloads within the first week.

While the game’s popularity has somewhat dwindled, players have found new ways to creatively hunt, including Mount Pleasant bar crawls and incorporating the game into an honors biology course at CMU. “Since I started using Pokemon Go in the classroom, I had a few educators contact me and want to know how I did it,” said Bradley

Swanson, a CMU biology professor. “There were some people who didn’t think it a worthwhile activity. I don’t think they understood it.

Most of the people were excited and thought it was a useful way to integrate games into learning.”

Pokemon Go, a phone app combining the animated creatures from the popular late-90s television show and video games, requires players to physically move around to capture Pokemon. Once getting close to the geocached location of the Pokemon, the phone camera can activate, showing a virtual-reality image of the character in the real world.

Half of the Foundations of Evolution and Diversity honor course students were already playing the game. They never expected to bring it into their labs.

Swanson told his class to download Pokemon Go before explaining the rules — the students had to pair up and could go anywhere to

hunt Pokemon as long as it was on campus.

He said the game can be applied to his course because there are two aspects to diversity: the number of species and the equitably of the species. Within the Pokemon realm, there’s several that can be found almost everywhere while others can only be found at certain places at certain times.

“That’s how it’ll be like with trees,” Swanson said. “There will be a lot of common ones that can handle many different habitats. But then the rarer ones can be the ones that are more interesting and show signs of pollution or are indicator species. We can use Pokemon Go that way.”

After the hour-long hunt ended, students created graphs displaying the diversity of Pokemon on campus.

It was the “perfect way” to teach students how to make a graph, make a key and mark an axis, Swanson said.

“It gives us the opportunity to connect these intense concepts that would normally be ambiguous or hard to wrap your mind around because you can compare them to the video game,” said Ann Arbor freshman Chandler Ray. The class was split into the three official Pokemon teams — Valor, Instinct and Mystic.

The teams did have a competitive edge to them because they were ranked at the end of labs, said Swanson. Team Mystic ended up ranking in first place, Team Instinct in second place and Team Valor in third place.

TEAM LOYALTY Outside of the classroom, the competition isn’t always as friendly. Each team battles their Pokemon for control over geocached gym locations throughout Mount Pleasant.

A gym is where users battle their Pokemon against other teams until one team claims the gym or location.

“Team Mystic is a family.

No other team can say the same,” said Mount Pleasant native Will Hall. “The amount of support I’ve seen since the beginning of this game is absolutely unreal.”

Players aren’t difficult to spot. They are the people you often see walking with their phones raised, fingers carefully swiping up the screen to throw Pokeballs before turning to their friends in either happiness for their catch or disappointment from Pokemon running away.

Joking insults are commonly tossed between the teams.

“Players are either egodriven for Team Valor or the popularity of Team Mystic, but nobody wants to be considered the underdog (with Instinct),” said Zachary Strozewski, a Mason senior and member of Team Instinctmember. “We are able to rise against the challenge, everything we do has relevant importance and our hating rate is higher out of the three teams.”

Remus native Logan Snyder, 19, of Team Valor disagreed.

He said Team Valor is what “Pokemon is all about.”

“At its heart, Pokemon is about having the whole world staring you in the face and replying, ‘Bring it on,’” Snyder said. “It’s about picking yourself and your team up off the ground for the umpteenth time, training endlessly, and then finally toppling the gym that’s held strong for days.

Valor is what Pokemon is all about, so why would I choose anything else?”

ALCOHOL-FUELED POKEMON SAFARI

Even with the competitive edge attached to the game, players manage to find ways to bond over the game including evolving the childhood game into the adult world through an alcohol-infused Pokemon hunt on Sept. 8.

Lures were set at downtown bars by the Mount Pleasant Trainers’ registered student organization, a Pokemon-focused club at CMU. At 7 p.m., about 20 players gathered and wandered to the bars together.

They walked through the streets, celebrating their captures as people continued to join their ranks at each bar.

“Pokemon has a nostalgic feeling to it,” said Southgate senior Josh Simms. “It almost felt like we were too old. But with Pokemon Go, it’s like we can show you we aren’t too old. We can drink and play Pokemon.”

Several establishments were in in the PokePub Crawl, including Marty’s Bar, The Bird Bar and Grill, Blue Gator Sports Pub and Grill, Dog Central and the Pineapple Express food cart. Marty’s Bar even sold a special drink, “The Pikachu,” which was a combination of red bull, orange juice and vodka.

“During the first week that Pokemon Go came out, my Fitbit said I walked more than 30 miles,” Simms said.

“With the bar crawl, I want to make connections. We are incorporating two great things — Pokemon and alcohol.”

The bar crawl turnout was more than expected, said Southgate senior Tyler Goudreau.

“I didn’t expect it to be so popular. We had negative comments on the event page when it was first made because people said it would be dead,” said Goudreau, Mount Pleasant Trainers’ Club co-president. “People are just excited to drink, talk and hang out with people who are just as into Pokemon as them.”

A band known as Backpacks stumbled into success.

The Mount Pleasant-based band started during casual jam sessions in high school and was discovered by independent record label Dirty Sushi.

Now the band has an album, “Still Life,” released in the United Kingdom.

The band performed more than 40 shows last year, some extending as far as the East Coast.

Despite the large amount of shows, Austen Reno, co-vocalist of Backpacks, said they’re not where the band wants to be.

“We still want to grow and move. It still shocks me today that we can even play together in just Midwest states — we are just a bunch of kids playing music,” the 20-year-old Reno said. “We try to keep our feet on the ground and heads small. We are just working together and making our music as good as we can.”

The “pop punk emo” band released their first album, “Still Life,” in 2015 before releasing “Revision” later that year. Both albums can be found on Backpacks’ Spotify page.

Central Michigan Life caught up with the band member to discuss Backpacks’ fall into success and first time filming a music video.

CM LIFE: How long have you been a band?

RENO: A little over two years. We started the band when I was about to graduate high school in 2013.

It was where me and the rest of the bad had a couple classes together, found out we were into the same punk and pop punk music so we started getting together to play songs we wrote. It just fell into place. We suddenly got a drummer and everyone hopped on.

How would you compare that first show to your new ones?

That first show at The Loft in Lansing was interesting. We’ve grown a lot since then, and I like to think we got better since then. We opened for a bigger band — we were blessed to even be on that stage — and it

was really cool. Now we’ve played so many shows that one week, it’ll be a packed room and the next there will only be 15 people there.

What record label are you working with?

We work pretty heavily with an independent record called Save Your Generation Records. We were playing a lot of shows and meeting a lot of other bands, and through them, we stumbled into him and got in contact with the label. Now we’re on Spotify and iTunes.

New business college role highlights entrepreneurship

After spending time as an attorney in Silicon Valley during the height of the “dot-com bubble,” Jeff Thomas believes he has what it takes to be the Chair of Entrepreneurship.

As a newly-established administration role in the College of Business Administration, Thomas said he hopes to strengthen the entrepreneurship department by bridging the gap between how entrepreneurship is taught in class and how it affects life outside the classroom.

“The student body at large will be impacted by having revised and new academic courses and programs, and having courses and programs that are better connected to the practice of entrepreneurship,” he said.

Among changes to the department Thomas will oversee is the proposal of an online Masters of Entrepreneurial Transactions program.

Thomas said he wants to push to “package” entrepreneurial courses in ways that reach out to more business students and non-business students alike.

Thomas received his doctorate from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

Before coming to CMU, Thomas served as the Chair of the Business School at Johnson & Wales University in North Carolina. He also

founded entrepreneurship and small business programs at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina and at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. Prior to working in academia, Thomas melded his experience in both law and business when he represented entrepreneurs as an attorney.

As chair of the department, Thomas plans to focus on the “academic aspects of entrepreneurship.” This includes adding new courses and programs, revising old ones and recruiting new faculty, he said.

Thomas will also work together with other faculty members to integrate these goals in a way that’s beneficial for the institute as a whole.

“We will work with (Executive Director of the Entrepreneurship Institute) Bruce Marble and others to better connect the academic aspects (and) the experiential aspects of entrepreneurship,” he said. “We are already undertaking new initiatives to strengthen connections between the New Venture competition and our entrepreneurship courses.”

Thomas said he is excited to move the department forward in what he sees as a bold new direction in the “hot and growing” field of entrepreneurial education.

“Even though CMU has already accomplished impressive things on the entrepreneurship front, our department is still relatively new,” he said. “There are plenty of exciting opportunities for us to pursue — opportunities that will distinguish CMU and benefit our students.”

Following an interview process, 12 students were selected as STEM Education scholars for the 2016-17 school year.

STEM Education Scholars is a new program that started last year for teacher education students focusing in a STEM field.

“So far we haven’t had to choose the award recipients because we’ve had a manageable number apply the last two years,” said Julie Cunningham, director of the Center for Excellence in STEM Education. “We’ve accepted all of the students who’ve applied.”

According to Cunningham, students apply online for the award. Each scholar needs to have a GPA of 3.5 and an ACT score of 26. An ACT score of 26 correlates with the Professional Readiness Exam every Education major must take to advance in their degree. The PRE has a low rate of passing, Cunningham said.

“Early on students get lots of experience and opportunities in STEM fields and with children,” said Elizabeth Kirby, acting dean of the College of Education and Human Services. “It’s an intensive hands-on educational experience.”

The program is funded by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. Each scholar can receive a one-time $1,000 award, enrollment in Leadership Safari, membership in a national math or science association and attendance at a national science, math or STEM conference, Cunningham said.

The STEM scholars will be recognized at a STEM Education Scholar reception Sept. 23 in room 413 of the College of Education and Human Services Building.

Chippewas rout UNLV, Rush moves up in record books

The Central Michigan football team is looking to go 4-0 this weekend at Virginia — something the program hasn’t done since 1985.

Despite a slow start Saturday, the second-year head coach said his team wasn’t living in the past following the 30-27 victory over Oklahoma State a week ago.

“I don’t think (the slow start) was due to our hangover,” he said. “They practiced very well.

They came in focused and they were prepared. Everyone knew what to do, but just came out a little slow.”

With its latest win, a 44-21 beating on UNLV, the Chippewas have outscored its first three opponents 123-51 — 29 points more than what the 2002 team outscored its opponents.

In what began as a back-andfourth game Saturday, the Chippewas pulled away in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points and blanking the Rebels’ offense.

The Chippewas’ defense ranks second in the Mid-American Conference in total and scoring defense, allowing 777 yards this season. The secondary, anchored by senior safety Tony Annese, leads the conference in passing defense efficiency, allowing opposing offenses to complete 53 of 107 passes for 501 yards and four touchdowns while snagging five interceptions.

Senior quarterback Cooper Rush completed 20 of 33 passes for six touchdowns and 352 yards through the air. His six touchdown passes Saturday were a Kelly/Shorts Stadium record.

“I did not realize (it was a record),” Rush said. “It just shows the great guys we got — a lot of play makers. We spread it all around and it was

The Charlotte native became the 12th quarterback in MAC history to surpass 10,000 career passing yards. Rush moved to second as CMU’s all-time passing yards leader, passing Ryan Radcliff 9,917 yards. Rush still trails Dan LeFevour (12,905 yards).

After tallying 255 yards against Presbyterian, CMU’s rushing game has been lackluster, causing the offense to appear pass heavy. CMU has passed 104 times and ran 98 times this season, gaining 950 yards through the air and 459 on the ground.

Bonamego said he was happy with his team’s 34 carries for 147 yards Saturday.

Potts scores game winner as soccer moves to historic 8-0

The Central Michigan soccer team had a chance to do something on Sunday no previous team had ever done in the history of the program — begin a season 8-0.

The soccer team made history with a 1-0 win against Oakland (4-4-1) in Mount Pleasant. “(Today) is a day where we celebrated a tremendous senior day and the senior class,” said head coach Peter McGahey said. “We put out an emotionally charged performance. We grinded and gritted it out. It just shows the character of the team to come out and put out a good performance to end the non-conference season. I think this is pretty neat recognition.”

Neither team scored in the first half, but CMU had 10 shots and three on goal. Four of CMU’s 10 shots came from sophomore forward Alexis Pelafas, two from senior defenseman Taylor Potts and two from senior midfielder Samantha Maher. Both of Oakland’s shots were from senior forward Alice Palmer.

In the 58th minute of the second half, senior defenseman Taylor Potts shot the ball from the top of the box to the upper right corner of the net to make it 1-0 in favor of the Chippewas. It was her second goal of the season and the only goal CMU needed to make history.

Senior midfielder Samantha Maher went down with an ankle injury in the 77th minute and did not return to the game. It took her about 10 minutes from the moment she went down to

McGahey is unsure of Maher’s injury status, but says he hopes “ice and a little ice

cream” will make her better for the next game.

If she isn’t ready for next week, McGahey said he expects the

team to rise to the challenge of filling her absence.

“The depth and overall impact of players on our roster are really good,” he said. “If we’re faced with a little adversity with Sam being out, we’ll expect someone else to step up and make the plays.”

The Chippewas begin MidAmerican Conference play at 7:30 p.m Friday at Northern Illinois.

“With MAC play starting next week, the reality is that you start 0-0,” McGahey said.

“It’s the wrong approach to say ‘hey, (non-conference play) doesn’t mean anything.’ It means a lot. Not many teams across the country are going to wake up Monday morning and be 8-0. Well, the CMU women’s soccer team is. We can build on that energy going into the MAC.”

WEEKEND SPORTS RECAP VOLLEYBALL FINISHES 1-2 AT UCF CHALLENGE After entering the weekend on a four-game win streak, the Central Michigan volleyball team finished the Central Florida Challenge 1-2.

In their first match of the weekend, the Chippewas fell to Central Arkansas 3-0. It was CMU’s fifth loss in straight sets this season.

CMU was able to bounce back in its second match Friday, topping North Carolina at Ashville 3-0. Junior outside hitters Jordan Bueter and Taylor Robertson each tallied 10 kills in the win.

Despite a 43-assist performance

by senior setter Kathia Sanchez, the Chippewas ended the tournament with a 3-2 loss to UCF. Robertson led the team offensively with 29 kills, followed by 26 from Bueter and 20 from sophomore Laura Willson.

Sanchez finished the tournament with 91 assists and Megan Kern led the way defensively with 42 digs.

The Chippewas (6-6) begin MidAmerican Conference play Friday at Ball State.
