Former faculty member charged with possession of child porn Trial scheduled for Sept. 27; Ranzenberger told police he thought he had destroyed the images

A former Central Michigan University faculty member is scheduled to stand trial in federal court Sept. 27 on one count of possession of child pornography.

Mark Ranzenberger, a former journalism and broadcasting fixed-term faculty member pleaded not guilty to one count of possession of child pornography on June 7 in U.S. District Court in Bay City.

According to the Office of the Court Administrator, Ranzenberger has until Sept. 6 to change his plea. Possession of child pornography carries a sentence of five to 20 years in prison.

Ranzenberger was arrested May 20 after police found more than 1,000 images of child pornography on various digital devices in his possession.

Central Michigan University’s investigation of Ranzenberger began after a student reported seeing thumbnails of pornographic images on his computer.

Ranzenberger unknowingly projected those images onto a classroom overhead screen, the student reported. Information Technology made a remote back up of Ranzenberger’s computer that day.

On March 9, Faculty Personnel Services found images of child pornography and reported the incident to CMUPD. A CM Life staff member observed CMU Police Detective Michael Sienkiewicz and other officers executing a search warrant on March 10 and search Ranzenberger’s Office. Ranzenberger responded to an email from CM Life seeking comment on March 11 saying he had “no idea” why police removed a computer from his office.

He has not responded to requests for

comment since.

Police confiscated a university-owned iMac computer, USB external hard drive, zip disk/drive, RANZENBERGER four 3.5 floppy Inadvertently broadcast disks, two USB child porn images during thumb drives, BCA class. two Flip video cameras, an IGB hard drive, a Kodak digital camera and SD card, an iPad, and multiple digital storage divices.

A U.S. Secret Service criminal complaint filed May 19 states Ranzenberger admitted to Sgt. Mike Morrow of the CMUPD he had obtained the images from a German website between 2004 and 2008. He said he saved 5 to 10 Powerpoint files into his Dropbox cloud storage account.

According to the complaint, Ranzenberger told Morrow he thought he had “gotten rid of all that stuff.”

The complaint also said he admitted to creating a document detailing how to “groom” a child from birth to age 11 to be receptive to participating in sexual acts. Ranzenberger told Morrow the document was “purely fantasy.”

U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Chris Cruze said Ranzenberger told investigators he had accessed a bulletin board sometime between 2004 and 2006 and downloaded several zip files containing pornographic images of children.

The content found included images of children younger than 12 years old engaged in sex acts and penetration of an infant. Police also found photos taken by Ranzenberger of children in public locations, without the knowledge of the children.

Ranzenberger told investigators that despite looking at the images and writing the grooming document that he never sexually assaulted a child.

Ranzenberger submitted a handwritten letter of resignation to the university on March 21. CM Life obtained the letter through a Freedom of Information Act request.

“I hereby voluntarily tender my irrevocable resignation from Central Michigan University, effective immediately,” the letter read.

On the same day, Ranzenberger submitted a letter of resignation to the Mount Pleasant City Commission. He served on the city’s planning commission.

“I hereby resign my position on the Mount Pleasant Planning Commission.

Thank you to the City Commission, the other planning commissioners, the excellent city staff and the community for the chance to serve,” he wrote.

City commissioners accepted his resignation March 28. His term was set to expire in December.

A CMU alumnus, Ranzenberger taught journalism and broadcast and cinematic arts classes at CMU since 1999. He previously worked at the Midland Daily News, Huron Daily Tribune and The Morning Sun. Assistant Special Agent in Charge Doug Vloto of the U.S. Secret Service said in June the investigation is ongoing, and they are checking various leads, including whether or not Ranzenberger distributed any of the obscene material.

“We’ll go where the evidence leads us,” Vloto said.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS IN THE RANZENBERGER CASE

March March 9 — A FPS employee views a backup of Ranzenberger’s CMU issued computer and finds several images of child pornography.

March 11 — Ranzenberger says via email he has “no idea” why the computer was removed. This has been his only public statement.

Ranzenberger is interviewed voluntarily by CMUPD Sgt. Mike Morrow. He tells the sergeant he thought he had “gotten rid of all that stuff.”

March 21 — Ranzenberger resigns from both CMU and the Mount Pleasant City Planning Commission. Since Ranzenberger is no longer a CMU employee, the FPS investigation is closed.

May May 2 – U.S. Secret Service opens its own investigation into Ranzenberger.

May 18 – Ranzenberger is voluntarily interviewed by U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Chris Cruze. He reveals he had content as far back as 2004 and that he had copied the content to his computer a year or two ago.

May 20 – Ranzenberger is arrested on one charge of possession of child ponography.

Sept.

Sept. 6 – Ranzenberger’s last day to change his plea.

March 4 — Mark Ranzenberger accidentally projects pornographic images from his university computer to a BCA class. One of the students reports the incident to Faculty Personnel Services. FPS begins investigating the student complaint.

March 10 — CMUPD detective Michael Sienkiewicz executes a search warrant on Ranzenberger’s office. Several digital storage items are removed along with Ranzenberger’s computer.

March 14 — Ranzenberger is placed on paid administrative leave by CMU. Police release a statement confirming to the public they found child pornography on his computer.

April April 18 - CMUPD concludes its investigation and begins communicating with state and federal law enforcement to determine whether Razenberger should be tried in state or federal court.

May 19 – A Secret Service agent files a criminal complaint against Ranzenberger detailing the results of the investigation.

June June 7 – Ranzenberger is arraigned on one charge of possession of child pornography. He pleads not guilty.

Sept. 27 – Ranzenberger’s trial is scheduled for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, in Bay City.

Mainstage cancelled for weather, tables set for first week of classes

Registered student organizations and local businesses were not able to promote themselves at Mainstage on Saturday. The event was cancelled because of inclement weather.

The annual event was expected to bring 8,000 students to the parking lot near KellyShorts Stadium.

The Office of Student Activities and Involvement is working with leaders of RSOs to reschedule and allow for tabling outside the Bovee University Center.

Damon Brown, director of the office of Student Activities and Involvement, said the tabling is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day this week.

“Unfortunately, there is no one good time to reschedule because of Labor Day weekend being (this) weekend, and when (Mainstage) falls,” he said. “This way, we still have a great opportunity for students to come by and meet specific organizations.”

Brown and other members in the Office spent most of the Saturday morning calling back some 300 RSOs and nearly 100 businesses, trying

to schedule what times would work best for the organizations to try and recruit. He estimates 15 RSOs can fit on the lawn per day.

A finalized schedule listing when RSOs will be available will be emailed to students, Brown said.

Depending on availability, the daily tabling could extend into a two week event, but will at least last until Friday, Sept. 2.

“We’re looking to enhance what we already planned on doing, which will be a great opportunity for students to come out and see what our university has to offer,” he said.

Program Board announced Jay Pharoah, Michael Blackson and DC Young Fly will perform as part of the Back to School Comedy Jam. The trio will take the stage Sept. 8 in McGuirk Arena.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free to CMU students and are $20 for the public. Tickets can be picked up at the Ticket Central box office starting next week. There is a limit of two tickets per student.

Pharoah was an SNL cast member for six seasons, performing on the show from 2010-16. He is known for his impressions of President Barack

Obama, Denzel Washington and Jay-Z. Pharoah also had roles in several movies, including fellow comedian Kevin Hart’s “Ride Along” in 2014. Pharoah was cut from SNL earlier this month.

Blackson, also known as the “African King of Comedy” has been in several television shows such as “30 Rock” and films such as “Next Friday”. He also starred in a commercial for Comedy Central’s “Chappelle Show”.

DC Young Fly is a cast member on Nick Cannon’s “Wild n’ Out.” The 24-yearold was also cast in the upcoming film “Almost Christmas,” which is set for release in November.

Campus is student-ready, more than 100 construction projects completed

With nearly 20,000 students coming back to campus for classes Monday, Central Michigan University underwent months of renovations to make it hospitable for those coming to campus this fall.

More than 100 construction projects concluded in the weeks preceding the first day of class.

Steve Lawrence, associate vice president of Facilities Management, said the projects were mainly deferred maintenance. This includes roof replacements, sidewalk replacements, street paving and sewer repairs around campus.

This summer, 6,700 concrete blocks were added to Grawn Hall, 400 tons of recycled tire material called infill was added to the turf of Kelly-Shorts Stadium and 60,000 cubic feet of storage was added to Rose Pond to better utilize the pond’s existing capacity.

These deferred maintenance

jobs were completed over the course of the past four months, with some of the longer projects like the Biosciences Building and the creation of a 6,600-square-foot, two-story addition to the west side of Grawn Hall are scheduled to take longer. Phase one of Grawn Hall’s makeover consisted of renovating the already existing 16,200-square-foot space, which concluded this summer.

In addition to readying the physical aspects of the academic buildings, custodial members of Facilities Management also are responsible for preparing Residential Halls for student use.

“Each summer (work) consists of some furniture replacements, repairs to rooms (and) touch up painting,” said Kathleen Gardner, director of Residence Life. “Some summers include lobby remodels, carpet replacement and painting all common areas.”

Floors five through eight of Cobb Hall were renovated along with the kitchen area of Northwest Apartment building three.

To make this work possible, Facilities Management relies on the work of 24 full time custodians, as well as an additional 90 temporary custodians. The cleaning of the halls began May 7 and concluded Aug. 24.

Alongside preparing the residence halls for students moving in during August, custodial staff assisted in preparing the halls for nearly 50 summer conferences and camps. Lawrence said no issues arose during the cleaning of the residence halls, but that the task was still daunting for custodial staff nevertheless.

“Every summer cleaning the 22 residence halls is a major effort,” he said. “This year was no exception.”

Gardner referenced moving instructions that circulated through the residence halls when speaking of the standard of quality expected of living arrangements for students. Living units should be “clean and sanitary” and “absent of damages resulting from negligence, abuse or misuse,” she said.

A national search is being conducted to find a successor to Steve Lawrence, associate vice president of Facilities Management. Lawrence announced his plans to retire in Sept. 30.

Central Michigan University Chief of Police Bill Yeagley is leading a seven-member search committee.

Lawrence started at CMU in 2003 as director of Plant Engineering and Planning. He worked as a contractor for two years, and as a full time employee for 13 years.

The committee hopes to have the position filled by October.

Online training replaces AlcoholEdu

An online training course providing education on sexual misconduct, substance abuse and healthy relationships is replacing AlcoholEdu. The course, titled “Think About It,” is offered through an online education provider, called CampusClarity. The online course is mandatory for all incoming students. It can be accessed through students’ online university account.

Returning students are not required to take the training.

Two other optional forms of the online training are available. One is for faculty and staff and one is tailored to graduate and global campus students.

If freshmen and transfer students fail to complete the “Think About It” training, their account will be placed on hold for spring semester course registration.

The main benefit of “Think About It” is that it presents scenarios realistically, said Title IX Coordinator Katherine Lasher. It also can be accessed by more people on campus than just freshmen, which were the only group of students who were able to access AlcoholEdu, Lasher said.

At the end of the training, there is a map where students can choose their location and learn about how they can access different resources that pertain to where they live.

“We’ve identified off-campus resources wherever there is a physical presence of the university,” Lasher said. “Students taking courses outside of Michigan will be able to find their resources as well.”

Lasher said CMU has always provided students with training similar to “Think About it,” but this will be the first time CMU will offer this kind of training on an online platform.

“The (substance abuse education) is something that is extremely important for us to be able to offer to our students,

but not as important as the Title IX information,” said Anthony Voisin, associate vice president of Student Affairs. “That’s something we feel is tantamount.”

CMU has a three-year contract with CampusClarity.

About a year was spent determining which form of training to offer at the university, Lasher said. “Think About it” was tested by students and departments across campus, including Student Disability Services, which garnered positive feedback.

Federal law requires universities to offer some form of training to students, faculty and staff about sexual misconduct policies, Voisin said.

“More importantly, we want our students, faculty and staff to understand not only what our policies and procedures are on campus,” Voisin said, “but how to possibly prevent (sexual misconduct) if they have the opportunity and create a caring and supportive environment.”

In a few short months, the American people will cast ballots to elect the next President of the United States.

It is a historic time to be a registered voter.

We will participate in a presidential election unlike any other. As the staff of Central Michigan Life, we understand that our mission as student media is more important than ever.

Part of that mission is advocating for students and exploring the issues affecting their lives. This semester, we plan to cover politics with a renewed focus. It is our goal to put student voter issues and potential office holders into our editorial spotlight.

In turn, we hope you use that information to mobilize yourself, and your friends, to vigorous political action. We hope to encourage you to turn out on election day. We want you to advocate for the issues you hold dear.

Our coverage will explain the process of voting, including how you can cast your ballot in Isabella County. Covering candidates for local, state and national offices is also a key part of that plan.

If Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton visits Michigan eight times, we’ll aim to cover her eight visits. If Republican nominee Donald Trump visits our state nine times, we’ll cover his rallies nine times.

Our coverage of these candidates will be fair. We will not favor a set of candidates over another.

Our opinion page is the exception to this rule. We encourage our staff to opine on the issues they care about. We encourage our readers to send us guest columns and letters to the editor.

We believe that voting is still the sharpest weapon for positive change.

At least 46 million people between the ages of 18-29 are eligible voters, according to CIRCLE, an organization focused on inspiring young people to vote. That’s nearly 21 percent of the registered American electorate.

We still believe your vote matters. And we get it, your candidate of choice probably didn’t survive the primaries. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders lost. On the other side, more than 10 candidates slugged it out for the GOP nomination. That means at least nine different constituencies lost.

Now you’re either voting for Clinton or Trump, or exercising your right to vote elsewhere by supporting a third party. That’s great, and we’re happy you’re still involved.

What’s concerning to us is if you choose not to vote at all.

Don’t lose faith in the process. Not participating means chipping away at a vital coalition that carried President Reagan and President Barack Obama to victory – twice.

We at Central Michigan Life will make an effort to convince you of your own power.

People who live in nations ruled by oppressive governments die each day to have their political voices heard.

Keep that in mind as you reflect on the power of your vote.

Equal coverage in an election year In case you haven’t heard, we are approaching the final few months of a presidential election. It has been a unique year for national politics, to say the least.

Both major party nominees are generally viewed by many American voters as less than the perfect option.

Some voters flat out hate both candidates.

Young people, especially, have added fervor and energy to the daily political debate on social media and websites across the world.

For the next semester, I will act as the institutional, editorial voice of CM Life, and as a conduit for the many opinionated voices that exist here on Central Michigan University’s campus.

I feel like this is a job you can only earn once you get a proper lay of the land. To say the least, I’ve been around that proverbial block.

My four years at CM Life have helped me serve as a city and university reporter, in two lower editor positions and two semesters as Editor-in-Chief of this media company.

Some of you already know me, and have seen my opinions shared on this very page. You may hate my opinion. You may agree with me. I welcome both attitudes with open arms. It’s all

Part of CM Life’s purpose on this campus, which you can read about in today’s staff editorial, is to provide the best journalistic opportunities it can to students.

We are proud of our objective and politically-balanced staff. Many of our student editors have experience covering local and statewide political elections.

We’re excited to cover national politics this year.

We’ll cover local races as well. Kevin Cotter, the Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives and a CMU graduate, has reached his term limit. We will cover the battle for his seat representing the local electorate in the 99th State House district with vigor.

The only exception to our political coverage rule will be when it comes to purely opinionbased content. This aspect of the public debate and the media’s role is a littler murkier.

We understand our service to students. We take your political ideals seriously. You have a right to make yourself heard on public policy and social issues. We are here to provide a vehicle for you to do that.

If you’d like to debate the issues at the forefront of this year’s election, we encourage you to do so on our opinion pages and social media platforms. Submit a letter to the editor by sending it to opinion@cm-life.com But when it comes to news coverage, the platform of no presidential candidate will dictate our coverage plans.

As America prepares to make a decision on which candidate it wants to lead the free world, the debate is sure to grow to a new level of intensity.

Our goal is to never add unnecessary fuel to that fire, but rather to keep you from getting burned by the ignorance of silence and what’s worse: politically-charged nonsense.

I believe that sound opinions are formed only by interrogating your beliefs with an honest heart and an open mind, no matter how difficult that may be. Forming a sound opinion, based on fact and not feeling, takes a healthy dose of introspection and willingness to swallow your pride.

It means forcing yourself to look at another way of thinking that disagrees with your preconceived notions.

On this opinion page, I will work hard to be that open, honest voice, and I promise to examine and challenge my own beliefs in the spirit of my American values.

I can’t do that alone, however. I’m counting on each of our students and other members in our community to send letters and comments to me or our new Editor-in-Chief, Dominick Mastrangelo. We’ll publish them as often as we receive them.

City looking to become more ‘student-friendly,’ improve relations

Even though six percent of downtown Mount Pleasant properties are vacant, Michelle Sponseller, downtown development director, has big ideas of what the city has the opportunity to be.

The goal of Sponseller and Bill Mrdeza, community services and economic development director, is to keep the downtown aesthetic familiar for alumni and community members. They also are attempting to entice newer, trendier businesses to move to the area.

“The downtown will always have that homey feel, but what’s going to be changing is the interior,” she said.

Sponseller has served as the downtown development director for the city of Mount Pleasant for the past 12 years.

During this time, she said she’s seen the community relationship between students and residential businesses grow from being apathetic and resentful to mutually beneficial.

Businesses rely on student patronage during the school year, as Mount Pleasant’s population nearly doubles when students come back in the

fall. Because of this, Sponseller said she and Mrdeza are working to try and increase the amount of downtown traffic.

Their goal is to make student-community relations improve by bringing in businesses that students would be more likely to frequent.

This, Mrdeza said, will be made possible through a form-based code, where buildings must have the uniform zoning code exterior, but inside usage is decided by community interest.

He said because most zoning ordinances are use based, codes dictate where housing and stores can be built. Most of the time, the two don’t intersect.

With this rewrite, taking a zoning ordinance code from the 1980’s, new business owners would be encouraged to experiment with a building that has both a work space on some floors and housing on others.

“We’re pretty excited for the rewrite of zoning ordinance,” he said. “What we’re trying to do is make sure our zoning ordinance requires, not just suggests, that a new building be built in a similar manner to its neighbor. We want to be able to cater to younger folks coming in or new trends, what the public is really looking for. Moving to a form based code will get us those types of developments.”

Unlike the traditional code, which regulates how a building is used internally, form-based code regulates a building’s external form and how the building appears on the street in relation to its surroundings.

Sponseller described the code as a way for the downtown to keep the old-style feel alumni are familiar with while hosting businesses younger

students are interested in. The code has not been placed into effect yet and will take nearly 18 months to see fruition, Mrdeza said.

Nevertheless, close to a dozen individuals have already asked for information on purchasing vacant locations, said Mount Pleasant Vice Mayor Allison Quast-Lents.

“It hopefully made people look at the empty spaces as assets, where potential development may occur,” she said. “I haven’t heard of anyone making an offer on any of the locations.

It’s still a little early to determine if something will come from that event.”

There’s more to a successful downtown than just shops, however. Former Mount Pleasant Mayor Jim Holton said more downtown living also helps to increase foot traffic and patronage to the area.

More quality housing in the Central Business District and apartments located above street-level storefronts that house retail businesses and restaurants are essential components of bringing the town back to life, he said.

Holton, who is also the owner of Mountain Town Station, said he’s met students on tours of his restaurant who were not even aware of the businesses and shops available in the downtown area.

“We made it so students can bike and walk from downtown safely with more lighting and biking lanes. We’re making progress,” Holton said. “The heart of any great community is their downtown. It starts there and then expands out. You’ll have your Mission-style streets, but you get the personality in (your) downtown (area).”

FATE OF MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION HAZY; UNLIKELY TO APPEAR ON NOV. 8 BALLOT Budding hopes of seeing marijuana legalization on the ballot this November might be snuffed in Michigan after an activist group’s loss in court.

A challenge was filed by MI Legalize, a grassroots movement dedicated to the legalization of cannabis statewide.

The group sought to sue Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, Bureau of Elections Director Chris Thomas and the Board of State Canvassers following petition signatures gathered, indicating Michigan residents’ approval of the issue being placed on the ballot.

The group filed its petition June 1 after 354,000 signatures were gathered, making MI Legalize the first activist group to submit a cannabis petition in the United States.

Only 253,523 signatures are needed to make the ballot.

The group’s work might go up in smoke come election time, due in part to a number of those signatures being collected outside the legal 180-day window for collection.

The Detroit News reported Michigan Court of Claims Judge Stephen Borrello dismissed the lawsuit filed

by MI Legalize. He said the state is not legally bound to count signatures gathered for the petition submitted outside of a set time frame.

MI Legalize argued the requirement is outdated and difficult to comply with. The group also believed the 180-day time limit was a denial of both free speech and political expression enumerated in the First Amendment.

While this doesn’t necessarily mean the issue won’t be placed on the ballot, it’s highly unlikely.

CMU Research Corporation to expand neart Great Lakes Bay

The Central Michigan University Research Corporation plans to expand its operations into two new cities in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The first facility will be located in Bay City. The second location has not been decided. The decision came after a vote by the CMURC’s board of directors.

University President George Ross is a chair member on the CMURC board. He said expansion plans complement the university’s goals to influence and support communal growth and celebrate ingenuity.

“This facility will bring CMURC’s expertise, resources and pipelines directly to Bay City and other communities,” said Ross.

Since being established in 1999, CMURC has worked with both the campus and Mount Pleasant community to establish itself as a “SmartZone,” or a place where experts within higher education and local businesses can collaborate on ways to encour-

age economic growth and communal welfare.

The expansion will allow budding businesses in the new cities to work in partnership with other local businesses, chambers of commerce, economic development organizations and the university itself to utilize resources and kick-start self-growth according to a press release issued by University Communications.

CMURC president and CEO Erin Strang said the expansion has potential to help the two new host cities.

“We have created scalable programs to serve the region, but this expansion will allow us to better serve entrepreneurs and make all that CMURC has to offer even more accessible,” she said. “We’re excited about the opportunity to guide the development of businesses that will boost the local tax base, create jobs and make our communities more vibrant.”

The second location and specific construction information for both locations is scheduled to be released in the next few months according to that same press release.

BACK TO BUSINESS Students, visitors pack downtown neighborhoods during Welcome Weekend

Back to school means back to business for many Mount Pleasant stores and restaurants.

On the corner of Main and East Michigan Streets, Marysville senior Ryan Swindlehurst is busy trying to feed a growing line of students parked in front of his Walking Taco stand Saturday night.

“I’ve made thousands of these things,” he said, in between throwing rice and beans into a box. “I’ve had a lot of practice.”

In the time it takes him to say that, Swindlehurst has slapped together two more tacos and helped two customers pay for their food. It’s par for the course on Welcome Weekend.

For Mount Pleasant businesses, large party weekends serve not just as a major profit, but a way for owners to get to know new faces in the community and rekindle relationships with regulars. For students, it’s a way to experience the Mount Pleasant community.

Welcome Weekend serves as an opportunity for Swindlehurst to get familiar with his customers.

“The focus for me is setting the tone that (Walking Taco) is going to be here every weekend and we’re here for you guys,” he said.

“This weekend is definitely kind of chaotic, but very rewarding.”

Unlike other restaurants,

Swindlehurst can’t manually prep his dishes by chopping vegetables or pre-cooking food. Instead, he spends two to three hours grocery shopping and making sure he’s stocked full on things like sour cream, utensils and takeaway containers. By midnight, he’s open for business.

Swindlehurst had to close early because he ran out of food during his first night out on Thursday.

More than 15 customers were turned away, which he said is typical for the crowds of Welcome Weekend. It’s not just Walking Taco faced with lines down the block — Dog Central and Weiner Wagon quickly become the crush of humanity after-hours when most eateries have closed.

“Welcome Weekend is a great way for us to get exposure, especially for new students who have never heard of us before,” said Paul McFall, owner of Dog Central.

A 2007 alumnus, McFall said having been on both sides of Welcome Weekend has given him a greater understanding of what to expect as a business owner. Knowing when to expect large rushes of crowds and how to handle overlyintoxicated students, McFall said helps to keep business running smoothly and efficiently.

WOMAN INJURED IN DRUNKEN DRIVING ACCIDENT Mount Pleasant Police were dispatched Saturday to West Campus Drive during after a pedestrian was hit by a drunken driver.

A woman was taken to the McLaren-Central Michigan with non life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 21 year-old woman from Oxford, was arrested for drunken driving. After an investigation, police found the pedestrian to be at fault.

Everyone’s out, everyone’s friendly — it’s like picking up where you left off in the last semester for people,” Chester said. “This is going to be my last (Welcome Weekend), so this is really my last chance to be a part of the community.”

The trio didn’t make it to Dog Central in time on Friday night, miscellaneous food items having run out earlier in the night like onions and macaroni.

They found a silver lining in the missed eating opportunity, however: using the walking time as a chance to introduce themselves to other students.

“I feel like Central is the friendliest campus in Michigan,” Chester said.

Michelle Sponseller, downtown development director for the City of Mount Pleasant, said the atmosphere Chester describes is one the community strives for. The downtown area feeds off the energy students bring to it, and Welcome Weekend serves as the “kickoff event” that entices students to come and explore the area.

“While there’s something to be said for the quiet of the summer, I think it’s equally as important to acknowledge the sense of energy that comes from the students coming back,” Sponseller said.

Students raise concern of strict police reaction to Welcome Weekend

Police were out in full force this weekend, patrolling the community as students celebrated the beginning of fall semester.

In an attempt to alleviate arrests and citations issued by the 10 law enforcement agencies out on Welcome Weekend, CMU Police sent out an email Thursday warning students of behaviors that might get them in trouble with law enforcement.

Though Officer Jeff Browne of the Mount Pleasant Police Department said he believes not many students read the email, the department tries to connect with students through emails, educational presentations, social media and advertising.

Violations, however, were issued this weekend — and in abundance.

Mount Pleasant Police received 653 complaints this year, compared to 574 last year. There were 344 people cited or arrested, with the most common citations issued involving parties with open intoxicants — 155 citations and arrests.

Other common incidents were minor in possession with 70 cita-

tions or arrests and 45 for nuisance party-hosting. Twenty-five traffic citations were also issued, as well as 17 citations or arrests for disorderly conduct. There was one arrest for carrying a concealed weapon and three warrant arrests.

Thirteen of the 22 CMUPD officers were on patrol Saturday. Klaus believes this Welcome Weekend seemed less busy for CMUPD than last.

CMUPD reported 16 citations, 121 arrests and 16 ambulance calls for intoxication on campus during the weekend. Minor in possession was cited by CMUPD the most with 10 people receiving tickets. One of the arrests was for a person who attempted to flee from the police, and another was for a warrant from a different department.

Police presence was focused on the area between Bellows and Illinois street, where the majority of offcampus students live. Many students told Central Michigan Life they felt overwhelmed by the number of officers out during the weekend.

Chesterfield junior Zachary Gregarek said he felt police presence was greater than in the past. He said two different parties he attended

were stopped by police long before he considered them “nuisance” parties.

“It was definitely heavier than I thought,” Gregarek said. “They were way strict this year.”

Junior Trevor Hulbert described police presence as “overbearing.”

Hulbert said his housemates were instructed by police to fence off their front yard to avoid having too many people in the small area.

“Nothing could really happen on (Main) Street,” Hulbert said. “I guess they did their job, but a little too well.”

Browne was aware of student concerns. He said the city needed to make it clear that some of the behavior during Welcome Weekend was unacceptable. Browne added that police presence was no larger than last year.

“We never said it wasn’t going to be strict,” Browne said. “We expect individuals to follow community standards.”

Student Government Association President Ian Elliott said despite a large number of arrests, he felt students acted responsibly and were respectful of law enforcement and their presence in the community. Elliott did say, however, many students w POLICE | 14

came to him concerned about “egregious police behavior” and over-ticketing.

“We had enough instances, enough feedback from students, however, that I am convinced (something is wrong),” Elliott said. “I’m not sure if they’re Mount Pleasant officers or from outside of the community but there were a few allegations that came forward to me (regarding police aggression) and (SGA) will do their do diligence to try and get all sides of the story.”

SGA will gather data and create a report to potentially bring before the city commission, Elliott said. His hope is to highlight overbearing and unclear ordinances so that both students and community members can understand what is expected of them during party weekends. He said he hopes the same can be done for highlighting why the city needed 14 different response teams to manage only a few city blocks.

Police were proactive in keeping the streets free, Klaus said, but also wanted to give students room to enjoy Welcome Weekend.

“We understand students want to have fun and meet people,” Klaus said. “We want them to have fun.”

The majority of people cited by police were not CMU students, but visitors from out of town, Browne said. “[We] anticipate getting people from out of town because they hear this is the place to party,” he said.

Despite what students considered as heavy police presence, Browne said he did not like the ‘us vs. them’ outlook that comes between students and the city when the semester starts. He said police consider students a part of the community.

“It should be us together,” Browne said. “We invest a lot of time to make this a great community.”

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services available for students

Survivors of sexual assault in Mount Pleasant will no longer have to find transportation to get specialized medical treatment.

A community partnership between the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, Central Michigan University, McLaren-Central Michigan and Women’s Aid Service has reinstated the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program at McLarenCentral Michigan, providing services to people 12 years or older.

After someone has been sexually assaulted, the person can go to McLaren-Central Michigan for treatment relating to their assault, which includes emergency contraception, trauma response, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, forensic medical care and referral to further support services such as counseling.

If these services are not administered by a SANE nurse, there is a possibility they could be administered inappropriately and ineffectively,

“These services are essential because it’s part of the survivor’s long road to recovery,” Klaus said.

Before the services were restored, CMUPD offered rides to survivors of sexual misconduct to get SANE services. This usually involved traveling to Midland or Lansing, Klaus said.

“Administering the services generally takes around three hours,” Klaus said. “It was not the most accommodating.”

Last year Klaus said CMUPD had to transport students about six times to get SANE services. Getting transportation to services in

a timely manner is important because there is a 120-hour window where forensic evidence is lost if a survivor doesn’t have access to services.

“When we had a student that came to us, we got them to the service,” Klaus said. “We’re always going in order to make sure our students are taken care of,” Klaus said.

A group of nurses volunteered to take the required 40 hours of training to get SANE certified to provide the services that have been absent from Isabella County since 2013, due to a reduction in grant funding.

“I hope the service will never have to be

used, but that’s not the case,” said Anthony Voisin, associate vice president of student affairs. “There will be situations on campus and off campus, involving students and not involving students. Now that we have this service locally, it’s great for survivors to not have to be transported to Lansing.”

Grant money from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe was reallocated in support of SANE efforts in September 2015 and the program officially became available once more in June 2016.

People who use SANE are not charged for the administering of services, Klaus said.

Survivors can get all of the services and have the choice of launching an investigation through law enforcement if they so choose.

If the perpetrator is a CMU student, they can also choose to pursue an investigation at the university level.

“At CMU, we understood the importance of having these services,” Voisin said. “We decided to collaborate with the tribe and the hospital to ensure we could get those services back here for campus and the community.”

Art Walk Central helps local art scene, community

When Kathy Hill started Art Walk Central in 2012, she wasn’t just creating an art competition—she was creating an art infusion.

The event started Aug. 20 and runs until Sept.10. Some events scheduled for Aug. 27 were postponed due to rain.

Hill, the executive director of Art Reach of Mid Michigan, and Michelle Sponseller, the downtown development director for the city of Mount Pleasant, helped form Art Walk Central.

The event brings in more than 120 artists who showcase art at 17 different locations for judges and the public to vote on in order to win cash prizes.Winners are announced at the annual auction, which takes place Sept. 8 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.

“We’re just trying to bring the arts and culture to Mount Pleasant so we can expose our community to the different types of art. We have them get involved in it and be active in it,” Hill said.

The festival includes 24 different events for artists and community members to showcase their skills. Brothers Dillon and Payton Pringle painted a mural behind

Pisanello’s Pizza on Aug. 28.

The brothers recently graduated from Mid Michigan Community College in May, and are planning a move to Grand Rapids next month to attend Kendall College in the spring. The mural, which is the first they have ever painted together, depicts an Italian canal scene.

Dillon, 26, and Payton, 29, said they were reinvigorated in the art scene at Mid Michigan Community College, and are excited about the future of the art scene in Mount Pleasant.

“There’s a lot more for this city to offer as far as art to Central Michigan,” Dillon said. “Art Walk brings a lot of people around town to look at the pieces. In the past four or five years, Art Reach has really contributed to the art scene and culturizing this college town.”

Payton said aspiring artists should ask galleries to display their work. He said artists should also ask veteran artists for tips.

“Every (artist) starts somewhere and it’s definitely, even in this smaller town, been a long uphill battle with art and convincing yourself it’s the right thing to do,” he said.

The Pringles mentioned Helios Art Gallery, the University Art Gallery and the 515 Gallery in Clare as venues for local artists to check out.

Helios is hosting several artists talks throughout Art Walk Central.

“The goal is to expose individuals to art opportunities and to get people into the venues,” said Amy Powell, the new executive director. “Most of the venues have the art pieces inside of them, so it actually brings people into the space.”

The Central Michigan University Art Gallery hosts several exhibitions throughout the year, including one for Art Walk Central.

Loissa Harrison, a CMU Art Gallery attendant, said art galleries allows visitors to escape the real world and get a chance to see life through another perspective.

“The art scene in Mount Pleasant is growing but very interactive. No matter your demographic, there’s always a way to get involved in the art community,” the Grand Rapids senior said. “We have tons of talented artist in the area who are very eager to showcase their work.”

There is also the Morey Family Gallery, which is located at Art Reach of Mid Michigan.

Hill said Morey donated $4,000 this year to Art Walk Central to help start it up.

Hill said the event is great for young artists in the area.

Bonamego awards marching band member $1,000 check

Alex Markarian had no idea why head football coach John Bonamego was making a special appearance at the Marching Chips’ practice in the Indoor Athletic Complex on Saturday.

With the entire marching band and football team present, Bonamego awarded the Clarkston senior trombone player a $1,000 check to thank Markarian for the work he put in during his time at CMU. “It was just cool to go up there and shake his hand,” Markarian said. “It’s pretty amazing and super generous.

I’m happy to be a part of the band, school and the team.”

As for the $1,000, Markarian said he will likely donate it to the marching band to replace or

repair equipment.

Bonamego has made multiple appearances to thank members of the marching band for their support. The coach said he wanted to do something special this time around.

“I think our band does a great job,” Bonamego said. “I think they are the finest marching band in the land. I believe that. Those kids put in a lot of hard work and they are there from before the beginning of the game and rain, shine, snow, mud or blood, they’re there until the very end.”

Markarian said Bonamego is one of the biggest supporters of the marching band he has met during his four years as a Marching Chip. That makes him feel welcome in the stadium.

“As a CMU alum’ himself, Coach Bonamego has a unique perspective of what it means to be a Chippewa,” said Marching

Chips Director James Batcheller. “He also has clear a vision for leadership, service, and dedication to the advancement of others. Alex possesses those qualities and represents the best of our student leaders.”

The money Markarian received was left over profits from the football program’s youth camps held during the offseason. Bonamego said the camps became privatized this year.

Bonamego said he formed a limited liability company with Player Personnel Director Ben Presnell, making the youth camps their privately owned business.

“We still had a little money left and since we own (the camps), rather than pay myself, we just did this,” Bonamego said.

of improving student involvement and attendance at football games since arriving on campus in February 2015.

Although he said last year’s student section was great, he believes it can be better.

“There is a lot of things going on, but stick around for the whole game,” Bonamego said.

“One of the great traditions we have here is singing the fight song together after every win and I want to include as many students as we possibly can in that. We plan on singing it a lot this year.”

Batcheller said Bonamego has improved the football program’s and band’s relationship during his time as head coach.

“The Marching Chips and the Chippewa Football Team have been supportive of one another for decades but Coach Bonamego has taken that relationship to a new level,”

WESTERN MICHIGAN FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARRESTED FOR HOME INVASION, ROBBERY Two Western Michigan football players were arrested Saturday for allegedly forcing entry into a female student’s off-campus residence and holding her at gunpoint.

Freshman linebacker Ron George and freshman wide receiver Bryson White are facing three charges, including armed robbery, first-degree home invasion and larceny. If convicted of all three charges, the pair could face life in prison.

USA Today reported the weapon used was

semi-automatic. USA TODAY also reported a knife was involved.

George and White are being held at the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. The players will be arraigned Monday. WMU head coach P.J. Fleck has suspended both players indefinitely.

Their names did not appear on the team’s roster on Sunday.

“I’m extremely disappointed and want to assure the community that this kind of conduct is unacceptable and

does not represent the values of this team or this university,” Fleck said. “The students will be held accountable to all University studentcode, Athletic-student athlete and Football Code of conduct standards.

Violations of these standards can lead to dismissal from the team and University.”
