WELCOME BACK

Summer holidays are now behind us and everyone at CMCC has been energized by another wonderful convocation ceremony in June at which we graduated the Class of 2018 and later when we welcomed a new class of Year I students on August 20, consisting of 193 highly qualified students accepted from over 750 applicants.

Technology-enhanced learning continues to be strengthened on campus and this summer our media services technicians and consultants expanded the audiovisual capabilities of the lecture halls, including the installation of new cameras for the lecture recording system we implemented last year.

Significant improvements also were made in the six technique laboratories in which we replaced the old CRT monitors with large flat-screen monitors networked to a central camera feed and Apple TVs® to better enable faculty members to demonstrate and assess manipulation performed by students.

CMCC continues its leadership in the field of manipulation sciences.

A new version of our FSTT® (Force Sensing Table TechnologyTM) tables

was launched this year. Eleven institutions around the world have now implemented our FSTT® tables and several others are placing orders.

The Human Analogue Mannequins (HAM®), also developed at CMCC and used with the tables, have also been improved and new sensing methods are being explored. In our Simulation Laboratory and technique labs, the faculty are using iPads® with special video analysis applications to allow for slow-motion playback, side-by-side comparison, and vector analysis to help students improve their adjusting skills.

This summer, CMCC was able to retire the last of its long-term debt. This was a major milestone that followed more than 15 years of fundraising to pay for our move to the Leslie Street campus. We must continue to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to make capital improvements and replace aging equipment and improve the infrastructure, but at least we are now in the enviable position of not having a mortgage to pay off. We are grateful to the many donors, chiropractic associations and other supporters that allowed us to achieve this status. This coming year we will be taking on a very expensive and complex project to replace our Student Information System (SIS), the centralized software system that manages student data, including grades, transcripts, academic progress and other essential functions.

Summer is also the time that we do many of our major physical facilities projects. Last year, we made the decision to decommission our swimming pool because of soaring costs and limited usage. This summer we had a contractor fill the pool in and level the floor, preparing this area for repurposing to address

other pressing needs on campus. We also renovated the cafeteria, recently rebranded as “The Eatery at CMCC,” with new flooring and commercial cooking appliances.

CMCC continues to have a global presence. I hosted an alumni luncheon at the European Chiropractors Union annual conference held this year in Budapest.

Some of our faculty were invited speakers at European chiropractic institutions this year, and we sent several residents to work on special projects with overseas researchers. At the upcoming October World Federation of ChiropracticAssociation of Chiropractic Colleges educational conference, CMCC will have the greatest number of presentations of any chiropractic institution from around the world.

As usual, this fall I’ll be attending annual general meetings in several of our provinces. As much as I would like to attend them all, sometimes it’s not possible because of overlapping meetings. I’ll be joining our Saskatchewan colleagues this year as the association celebrates its 75th anniversary. If I’m not able to be at your provincial meeting, I will be sure to send a CMCC representative in my place and I’ll try hard to be there at the next opportunity. I enjoy meeting and hosting receptions with our alumni and friends across the nation and it’s a great opportunity to trade stories and for you to hear first-hand what great things are happening at CMCC. I look forward to seeing you very soon!

FROM THE CHAIR maintain CMCC’s position as one of the finest chiropractic educational institutions globally. At the retreat, we also welcomed Ms. Deb Manz as the newest public member to CMCC’s Board of Governors. Ms. Manz brings her many years of involvement with the chiropractic profession in Alberta to her new position.

As the new and returning students fill the halls at CMCC, I am pleased to reflect on Convocation in June. This event is a high point for everyone in the CMCC community, including the Board of Governors – the joyful celebration of successful completion of the Doctor of Chiropractic program for another amazing group of new colleagues. It was my first opportunity, as Chair of the Board, to shake the hand of each graduate as they crossed the platform after receiving their hood. We are grateful to the many donors who have made awards available to recognize the successes of our graduates, while reminding us of those who have gone before, leading the way for our profession.

This issue of Primary Contact includes the stories of CMCC graduates and the various roads that they will take or have taken as chiropractors. These stories help us all appreciate that the possibilities of practice and the options beyond practice are ever evolving.

Following Convocation, the Board held its annual retreat, where discussion and planning on a wide range of directional topics took place. As we move forward on CMCC’s Strategic Plan, there are many exciting options and we are conscious of the need to choose wisely. This will allow us to

Homecoming also took place in June. Once again in my position as Chair, I had the honour of welcoming our alumni to this event where classmates reunite, reminisce and celebrate. Homecoming included a variety of social events such as a Welcome Home Festival with three food trucks, the annual Governors’ Club luncheon and meeting and the Grand Reception where the first Homecoming awards were given out.

As part of Homecoming, an exciting continuing education program provided sessions on a variety of topics for those at various stages in their practices. It is especially humbling to meet the chiropractic pioneers at this event and be reminded of the trials they met as early chiropractors and the groundwork they laid to make succeeding generations’ professional lives that much easier.

Butkovic, our past library director, who retired in June. In advance of her retirement, Margaret wrote a paper about the history of the CMCC library which has now been published by the JCCA. Her paper details the vision and evolution of the largest chiropractic library in Canada.

This historical paper joins those of chiropractic’s prolific historian, Dr. Doug Brown, in documenting the history of chiropractic and CMCC. It is important to remember and celebrate our past as this paves the way for future accomplishments. I was also pleased to be in attendance when Dr. Brown was presented with copies of a limited edition of Douglas Brown, An Anthology of Published Works on Chiropractic, recently published by CMCC for his tremendous contribution.

Many thanks to Margaret and to Doug for keeping our history alive.

The Beatrice Hagen, DC Award of Excellence honours and celebrates women who significantly influence the field of healthcare through chiropractic. Its criteria include those who have made significant contributions to chiropractic, more specifically, distinguished and exceptional service to advance the growth of chiropractic, through educational excellence, community outreach, research and development in the field of chiropractic health care. Additionally, individuals who have made “extraordinary contributions to education both nationally and internationally in the field of chiropractic,” and those who have “earned the respect and

Few professions are gifted with individuals such as Dr. Doug Brown, who has graciously chronicled the chiropractic history he has helped to build.

Liam’s father, CMCC alumnus Dr. Sean Foudy (Class of ‘99), is a former Canadian football defensive back who played six seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Ottawa Rough Riders and BC Lions. He was drafted by the Rough Riders in the third round of the 1989 CFL draft and played Canadian Interuniversity Sport football at York University.

CMCC NEWS An advocate for CMCC, Butkovic participated on many boards and committees including the Academic Collaborative for Integrative Health and the Chiropractic Library Collaboration, and was instrumental in CMCC obtaining membership in the Health Science Information Consortium of Toronto.

Margaret Butkovic retires CMCC salutes Library Director Ms. Margaret Butkovic who retired June 29 after serving CMCC as a librarian and later as Director of Library Services for over 40 years.

Beginning as an audio/visual librarian for CMCC’s collection at the Bayview campus in 1976, Butkovic’s role grew to oversee the development of CMCC’s vast media collection with the help of archivist Steve Zoltai who saw it grow from approximately three EBSCO databases, to what it is today. “Together, the databases, subscription services and dense collection of books makes the Health Sciences Library the largest chiropractic library in Canada,” says Zoltai. “Margaret was also vital to the architecture of the library space, providing input into its design when the new campus was being developed.”

Butkovic’s history with the library and knowledge of its content has been instrumental to its power users, including chiropractic historian Dr. Doug Brown: “Margaret Butkovic has been a huge help to me during my research for the historical papers

I have written over the years. She knows so many of the chiropractors by name, and also what information the library archives may hold about both the chiropractors and the profession as a whole. I appreciate the time and care she devoted to searching out what I needed.”

In addition to her dedication to building CMCC’s Health Sciences Library, Butkovic took on additional roles related to her work as a librarian, including that of Vice Chair of the ACC Librarian Subgroup, Treasurer of the Chiropractic Libraries Consortium, Chair of the Chiropractic Libraries Section of the Medical Libraries Association, and President of the Toronto Health Libraries Association.

She has been recognized with honours including CMCC’s Presidential Recognition Award, Certificate of Merit, Distinguished Service Citation, and Honorary Membership in the CCA in recognition of long-time and outstanding service and contributions to the chiropractic profession in Canada. In 2010 Butkovic was Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s guest on a delegation visiting Croatia.

During her tenure, the CMCC Library has remained at the technological forefront, moving CMCC from a reliance on paper journals, to access through multiple electronic platforms, devices and databases.

Most recently, she oversaw the creation of new student study spaces, the adoption of Kurzweil software (assistive educational technology), and authored “The History of CMCC Health Sciences Library, 1945 – Present,” published in the April issue of the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association. Her service to CMCC and to the profession has been called “unprecedented” by Dr. Kent Stuber, the publication’s Editor in Chief.

"Margaret has been an important part of CMCC since she began in 1976. She has not only developed the CMCC library into one respected and envied throughout chiropractic education but also highly respected by all health professional librarians.

She has worked tirelessly to ensure students and faculty were provided with the best resources to support their learning and research. In the process she has developed a wonderful rapport with students and alumni: Where is the first place returning alumni go? – to the library to see Margaret. WELCOME TO MARTHA FUNABASHI, PhD "I am also particularly interested in doing studies with Force Sensing Table TechnologyTM ..." had no intention of going back to school after completing my Master’s, nor any intention of leaving Brazil, but I was intrigued,” she laughs.

CMCC is pleased to welcome Dr. Martha Funabashi to the Division of Research where she will pursue clinical research in biomechanics.

Funabashi completed her PhD at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Greg Kawchuk (Class of '90).

Her interest in studying the effects of manual therapy began in Brazil, where she was working in her field of orthopaedic physiotherapy while completing an MSc in Neuroscience.

As she began to learn and incorporate manipulative techniques, she saw results in her patients that she couldn’t explain with current knowledge. Her undergraduate program at the University of Sao Paulo had encouraged research.

“Nearly 60 % of my class continued into research positions,” she explains. Funabashi was drawn to investigate the connection between the results she was seeing clinically with the manipulative therapies. “I

A few months later, she received a visit from a friend who was doing her MSc at the University of Alberta and who had returned to Brazil. This friend told Martha about Canada and the research she was doing at the University of Alberta. Soon after, Martha tentatively wrote to Dr. Kawchuk and a year later, she had gone from tropical rainforests and the night life of Sao Paulo to the somewhat chillier Edmonton winters.

There she immersed herself in the biomechanics of the lumbar spine, specializing in the way forces are distributed within the spinal tissues during spinal manipulation.

Through her PhD studies, she found that forces spinal tissues experience during manipulation are comparable to the ones experienced during passive movements of the lumbar spine, with only a few exceptions, which might be responsible for manipulation’s therapeutic effects.

She also found that regardless of the spinal manipulation parameters she studied, the intervertebral disc was the structure that experienced the greatest forces.

Funabashi’s particular lens is in looking at manipulation from a safety perspective and she has started a collaboration with Dr. John Costi, at Flinders University in Australia.

“His current research is in mapping the deformation that occurs within the intervertebral disc during specific movements and we are excited to see what that will look like during a spinal manipulation” she says. “I am also particularly interested in doing studies with CMCC’s Force Sensing Table Technology™ (FSTT®) to potentially link adjustment parameters and clinical outcomes,” she continues.

Dr. Sam Howarth, Senior Director, Human Performance Laboratory and holder of the McMorland Family Research Chair in Mechanobiology considers Funabashi a versatile and highly accomplished earlycareer researcher whose research interests, training and skillset will complement those of many CMCC faculty.

Funabashi is excited by the opportunities presented by her new position and can’t wait to devote her time to exploring the questions that intrigue her.

MEITAL YERUSHALMI, PhD CANDIDATE RESEARCH INTO PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS

In the case of Dr. Meital Yerushalmi (Class of ’15), PhD candidate, research found her. She recalls a particular class with Dr. Stephen Injeyan at CMCC where she first learned about the human microbiome, the collection of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, that reside within and on a human host. She was fascinated by the role of the microbiome in health and disease.

As a chiropractic student, she had a particular interest in the possibility that bacteria may play a role in the development of arthritis.

“I found a great interest in the dynamic relationship between the human host and the microorganisms that they harbour, demonstrated by the link between perturbations in the gut microbiome and conditions

including obesity, diabetes, and even autism.”

Her interest in microbiology grew and in her clinical year, she began teaching microbiology at a local private college where she eventually revised the curriculum.

Fast forward to today and Yerushalmi is working towards earning a PhD in Medical Science at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Her thesis investigates the skin microbiome in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, an inflammatory joint disease associated with psoriasis, in the context of the patient’s genetic background. Through laboratory and clinical projects, her work is the first to incorporate immuneand skin-barrier genes into the

It was in reviewing the existing literature that she found wide variances in the microbiome characteristics of the psoriatic plaque which, looking closer, she attributes to differences in study design and methodology. “The dry and slightly acidic environment of the skin harbours little bacteria and is therefore challenging to study,” she explains. For this reason, she sought an optimized methodology for the collection and isolation of bacteria from human skin. Her exciting success has led to a number of presentations at scientific conferences across Canada.

Technology plays its part “The growing interest in the role of the human microbiome in health and disease has been enabled by advances in sequencing technologies in recent years.

Culture-independent techniques are necessary in microbiome research to bypass the challenge of cultivating bacteria in the lab.

Next-generation DNA sequencing has been commercially available since 2005, and over the last decade newer machines were developed to produce a higher yield from multiple samples at a much lower cost. The ability to perform many thousands or millions of sequencing reactions in parallel reduces sequencing time

and costs, thereby facilitating DNAbased microbiome research.”

Concurrently, Yerushalmi is recruiting patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis for her main thesis project which investigates the role of the microbiome in these diseases.

How chiropractic complements her current studies “My chiropractic education has provided me with an excellent foundation,” says Yerushalmi. ”I felt that the basic science education and clinical experience has granted me an advantage when pursuing this PhD in a translational field of medical science.”

“Initially, I was concerned about the medical professionals’ predispositions about chiropractors; for example, assuming that all chiropractors repudiate public health practices.

While misinformation about chiropractic still exists, the medical professionals I work with have been generally quite impressed by the level of education I obtained at CMCC. I am humbled and proud to act as a liaison between the chiropractic and medical profession in shedding light on common misconceptions.”

Additionally, Yerushalmi says that her 12 months spent in clinical rotations have served her well in developing patient education skills, allowing her to easily convey the complex ideas related to her study to those she is recruiting.

Medical verses chiropractic intervention “There is a time and a place for everything,” says Yerushalmi, making the distinction between degenerative arthritis, which is amenable to chiropractic care and psoriatic arthritis, an auto-

immune rheumatic disease with a strong genetic predisposition that is conventionally managed by a rheumatologist. “Considering the differences in disease mechanisms, degenerative arthritis is amenable to manual therapy while rheumatic diseases such as psoriatic arthritis may require immunosuppressants or biologic therapy targeting inflammatory cytokines.”

Yerushalmi also stresses that patients with non-degenerative arthritides could benefit from chiropractic co-management.

“Chiropractors are well-positioned to provide nutritional, lifestyle, and rehabilitation counselling — which are particularly important in rheumatology patients — as well as manual care of concomitant degenerative arthritis as indicated.”

Next steps Alongside her graduate research work, Yerushalmi is an Executive Editor of the Institute of Medical Science Magazine and teaches Anatomy and Physiology at Talpiot College. She is also exploring post-graduate career pathways that would leverage her unique background in medical information, medical affairs (pharmaceuticals), research and teaching.

Throughout all of this, Yerushalmi is grateful for the depth and breadth of her chiropractic education, and the experience she has had with patients during her clinical internship.

Congratulations to Yerushalmi, selected as one of nine Graduate trainees across Canada to receive the Arthritis Society PhD Salary Award for her work: More than skin deep: the microbiome of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, announced August 30.

How Dr. Yerushalmi’s research could be applied “Results of this study may form the basis for further studies on the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of psoriatic disease,” explains Yerushalmi.

“Importantly, understanding environmental factors involved in disease progression and their underlying mechanisms are necessary for the development of therapeutics, as shown by a recent study on atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic, pruritic inflammatory skin disease triggered by an interplay between genetics and the environment.

Skin microbiome studies in AD have established that it is characterized by a high abundance of S. aureus, an important factor in disease exacerbation.1 Furthermore, low frequency of commensal coagulasenegative Staphylococcus (CoNS) strains with antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus correlates with S. aureus colonization.

Strikingly, reintroduction of antimicrobial CoNS strains to human subjects with AD decreased S. aureus colonization, and this commensal bacterial transplant has been approved by the FDA with a clinical trial underway.2 While futuristic, examples such as this highlight the potential of understanding the interactions between commensal and pathogenic bacteria in a human microbiome habitat, and underscore the significance of investigating the skin microbiome in psoriatic disease.”

My official start date is September 1, so I have time to get to know the community. I plan to get involved with hockey and soccer leagues in the area.

I enjoy those sports through them can get to know the community. I’m eager to establish myself as quickly as possible. The location is phenomenal and it will allow my girlfriend and I to enjoy the outdoor life. She has been lucky enough to find a great job there as well, working as a nurse in the Owen Sound General Hospital."

I feel I now have lifelong friends across the country.”

What is he looking forward to?

“I am excited to be referred to as “my Chiro” by someone. One of my favorite things about this profession is that patients really value their chiropractors. That alone speaks volumes. I am very excited to start practice.”

What did he love most about CMCC? "The sense of camaraderie and building a sense of competency within the program."

What will he miss most?

"Friends from across the country and the support and access to knowledge that you can’t get from books."

Dr. Jessé Michaud

From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Calgary, Alberta For Dr. Jessé Michaud, chiropractic is a second career. He started his professional life as an elementary school teacher and supplemented his income with roofing, which naturally led him to a becoming a chiropractor!

Not long after he began teaching, he met his wife Céline, whose father, Dr. Jean Levesque (Class of '74) is a chiropractor. Through their many conversations, Michaud became fascinated with the idea of becoming a doctor.

Michaud’s classmates will remember that he had an unusually busy schedule outside of his studies at CMCC… “Our first child, Avrielle was born in September of my first year at CMCC and to top it all off, she was four weeks premature. Being new parents while learning to study again and adjusting to the heavy work load at school was very difficult. Since we are from Saskatoon, we also didn’t have any family in Toronto to help us.

“Breastfeeding was a nightmare and four hours of sleep started to sound like a dream…”

“To make ends meet, Céline also served tables in the evenings. I would go to class during the day and return on breaks to make lunch and take over so Céline could rest."

"To be honest, the first six months are still a blur for us. The baby didn’t sleep or eat well and the learning curve was difficult to tackle and with so little sleep I felt I couldn’t retain any information.“ "When we finally felt like we were getting a hold on school and

balancing family life, our second daughter, Manon, decided to make an appearance. It was the beginning of third year. Luckily, all of the issues with the first child had been ironed out by then."

"We are very excited about our third child, expected to arrive in November 2018. Since I am no longer in school maybe this time it will be a walk in the park?”

Given the backdrop of such a busy family life, how did you manage CMCC’s course load?

“Friends, coffee and good time management! For the last four years, every day began at 6:00 a.m., waking up very early with the children and getting them ready for the day. Then off to school, studying until supper time, making supper, going through the bedtime routine and waking up several times in the night to explain why we can’t read more books at 4:00 a.m. I would get most of my studying done when Céline was serving tables and the children were down for the night. I came to realise very quickly that if I were to survive CMCC’s rigorous program, I would have to dedicate several hours every day to studying, regardless of where we were in the semester – and I also had to schedule in family time. As a family, we rarely broke these rules…except during what felt like the never ending potty-training stages. I also studied

with friends on a regular basis. I believe that the only way to make it through CMCC is with the help and support of classmates. Everyone was always willing to help each other out."

What did you enjoy most about CMCC? "I enjoyed the CMCC community the most and the close friendships that I developed. I am very grateful for the clinical experiences during my fourth year. Being challenged by my mentors Drs. Tavares, Myrtos and Hsu has truly been the highlight of my four years. I will miss my friends and the sense of community and being in a stimulating environment with people I admire who can push you to new academic levels."

What are you most looking forward to?

"This was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’m excited for more sleep.

A less hectic schedule will be nice.

It’s also good to be home again. I’m looking forward to living in a house again. I’m looking forward to spending quality time with my wife and children and my five brothers and sisters and their children as well. Free time has been pretty scarce in the last four years."

What are your next steps?

"We are moving to Calgary, Alberta where I hope to open my own practice in the fall. Going forward, we plan to live simply and to enjoy life."

International Graduate Dr. Sheila K. Sebopelo From Gaborone to Mahalapye, Botswana

“My Doctor of Chiropractic degree enables me to help alleviate pain, restore health and promote a positive, healthy lifestyle, creating rehabilitation programs and providing advice on nutrition.” She is optimistic about how she will be able to contribute to her patients’ wellbeing and is passionate about providing a new and important health care modality to her community and the nation at large.

Sebopelo and Molate worked together as nurses in Gaborone and Sebopelo believes they will be even closer as they take on their new roles as chiropractors running the World Spine Care (WSC) clinics in Mahalapye Hospital and at Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone. WSC established its first clinic in Botswana in 2011 as part of its mandate to fill “the profound gap in the evidencebased treatment of musculoskeletal and especially spinal conditions found in underserved areas around the world.”

When Dr. Sheila K. Sebopelo walked across the stage on June 14, she became one of two chiropractors who will serve Botswana and develop the policies and guidelines for chiropractic in the country along with her colleague, Dr. Hildah Molate, who graduated earlier this year from Palmer University.

Sebopelo is well acquainted with the health care system in Botswana.

With her Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Botswana, 10 years of experience working in intensive care and eight years as the Infection Control Coordinator at Princess Marina Hospital in the capital city of Gaborone, she is well-positioned to begin the outreach to her hospital colleagues and deliver chiropractic services to the people of Botswana.

In 2014, Sebopelo was offered the CMCC World Spine Care scholarship, established by CMCC and WSC, “to encourage, advance, and geographically broaden the practice of chiropractic to underserved countries throughout the world.”

Reflecting on her decision to come to Canada, Sebopelo says it was “a whirlwind of events and a test.”

Language, climate, culture shock, the sheer size of Toronto alongside the rigour of the curriculum and the technical advancement of the North American environment were challenges.

Sebopelo describes herself as both ambitious and adventurous. She drew upon those qualities to meet the challenges she faced with such a large change in her life, believing that out of trials and tribulations come solutions.

She remains thankful to a dedicated group of friends at CMCC who supported her in meeting her goal.

Her clinical internship began at St. Michael’s Hospital, a clinic model she felt would help prepare her for work in the hospital system in Botswana.

Here, she says, Dr. Chadwick Chung (Class of ’09) was key in helping her to synthesize three years of academic study and quickly put her skills into practice.

At our meeting, just two days before she was scheduled to head home after her long absence, Sebopelo said of her experience,

“friends turned into families; the pressure of study turned into success; former challenges turned into peace and joy, and the promise of my journey was fulfilled.”

Drawing strength from her explorations and new knowledge about health care delivery, Sebopelo cannot wait to do what she treasures the most – continue to care for her patients and offer new tools for their rehabilitation journeys through the introduction and ongoing practice of chiropractic.

Spinal pain contributes more to the global burden of disease than HIV, diabetes, malaria, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, breast and lung cancer combined, traffic injuries, and lower respiratory infections.

It is particularly relevant in areas where mining, farming and other types of physical labour are mainstays of the economy.

And since implementing paperless exams, we save approximately 3,000 sheets of paper on each conventional exam (an average of 15 pages) for each cohort of students. During 2017-18, CMCC students undertook 81 exams.

New this year, CMCC added organics to its recycling program.

PIERRE CÔTÉ NAMED TO GLOBAL REHABILITATION ALLIANCE The World Health Organization has identified a profound need for improved health care rehabilitation services for low to middle income countries and has created a partnership with the Alliance, which Dr. Côté will lead, following an election at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

Côté is the UOIT Canada Research Chair in Disability Prevention and rehabilitation.

He has a PhD in Epidemiology, and is the Director of the UOIT-CMCC Centre for Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation.

The Global Rehabilitation Alliance is an outcome from the WHO's 2017 stakeholder meeting and advocates for the availability of quality, coordinated and affordable rehabilitation through system strengthening according to population needs.

HOMECOMING Homecoming 2018 welcomed classes of ’53, '58, '63, ’68, ’73, ’78, ’83. ’88, ’93, ’98,’03,’08, ’13 and ’17.

New this year, the President’s Welcome Home Festival was a tail gate party event and guests were invited to the Rec Room games room, as a place to unwind and socialize after a full weekend.

This year’s CE events included sessions on buying and selling a practice and brand strategy and marketing for practice growth.

Homecoming Awards This is the first year of the Homecoming Awards in which

The Pioneer Award recognizes outstanding leadership, vision and dedication towards chiropractic education in Canada.

Recipient: Dr. André-Marie Gonthier In 1988, as first vice-president of the Ordre des chiropraticiens du Québec, Dr. André-Marie Gonthier (Class of ’83) took the responsibility of overseeing an exciting project which would culminate with the launch of a chiropractic program at UQTR in the fall of 1993. Forty-five students were

chosen out of 600 applicants to join the first class.

He was the first professor hired for the chiropractic program at UQTR, and was program director for almost 10 years.

The Alumnus of the year Award recognizes outstanding leadership and service to the chiropractic profession.

This year, two alumni are recognized.

Drs. Karen Hammerich and Janis Noseworthy Dr. Karen Hammerich (Class of ’73)

has displayed a non-stop dedication to excellence and is recognized as a pioneer in faculty teaching.

Practicing in France provided her with the opportunity to observe the early development of the chiropractic profession in Europe and to assist in the work towards recognition of the profession.

As CMCC’s Chair of the Department of Chiropractic Principles and Practice, she has initiated significant curriculum development. Her keen interest in the humanities and how they impact the future of the profession has led to the redesigning of all the departmental courses.

Dr. Janis Noseworthy (Class of ’98) has been a Board member of the Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors since 2004. She has served as Director, Vice-Chair and Chair, and is currently Registrar.

Additionally, she has served as cochair of the Federation of Canadian Chiropractic Regulatory Council.

As Chair of the Peer Assessment Committee, she was instrumental in revamping and streamlining the peer assessment process in Nova Scotia. Encouraging growth in the profession, she has represented chiropractic at university career fairs and has had many students shadow her over the years.

ANNETTE BOURDON CHIROPRACTIC ADVOCATE, PRACTITIONER, SPOKESPERSON AND SUPPORTER

“I was one of those rare individuals who has had chiropractic care since birth,” says alumna Dr. Annette Bourdon (Class of ’85). Her mother, a registered nurse born in Indiana, had five children, all of whom received adjustments since infancy.

“My mother was always an advocate and champion for chiropractic – I can remember her explaining the benefits to people she thought it could help – wherever she was. In our family, our chiropractor was the go-to person for all health-related matters.

There is a treatment room dedicated to Bourdon’s mother at the CMCC Campus Clinic that reads Catherine Bourdon: Proud mother of two chiropractors and true ambassador for chiropractic.

“I remember when I first decided to become a chiropractor. I was in the kitchen with my family. One of my older siblings suggested that I

consider becoming a chiropractor. I promptly responded that they were out of their mind and adamantly insisted that there was no way I was going to University for six years to become a chiropractor. Then, I stormed out of the room!” That same night, she says with a laugh, she must have been visited by the ghost of BJ Palmer, because by morning, she had decided that was exactly what she would do. “I was 16, about to finish grade 11, and I sacrificed my summer to take a physics credit so that I could study sciences at University.

Previous to that, I was eager to begin working and not interested in years and years of study.” Today Bourdon is a continuing education supporter and goes by the motto “If you coast, you’re toast.” She continues, “Life is about learning and giving back. If you aren’t learning and growing, you are not living.” Today both Bourdon and her brother, Dr. Gary Bourdon (Class of ’77), are chiropractors. Annette has also become a spokesperson for the profession, as well as taking on a number of other professional roles.

In her busy solo practice, Bourdon cares for families, “I have been blessed to have had some patients with me since the very beginning, 33 years ago.” She also treats athletes, former Olympians, Iron Man enthusiasts and “back in the day,” she says, the Montreal Expos.

Continual Education and Technology “I am very big on Continuing Education and upping my game,” she explains. In exploring techniques, she moved from diversified to Motion Palpation, then to Pierce Technique and then Activator. She believes

that pre- and post-treatment X-rays are important. “In addition to being a valuable diagnostic tool, patients should have the opportunity to see the condition of their spine and understand why they need care as well as their improvement over time.”

“I know some people feel we should stick with our roots, but with the technology that is now available, I owe it to my patients to offer them the best treatment available. I’m also aware of the fact that some people aren’t comfortable with manual adjustments and believe we should offer something else.” In 2011 she began treating her patients with a sophisticated computerized adjusting machine made by Sigma Instruments.

The Sigma technology has software that analyzes the stiffness of the spine and then the chiropractor adjusts the targeted areas using multiple percussions.”

“I don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, but I do like to continue to learn. As technology advances and research reveals new information, I add skills and knowledge to my experience which I believe makes me a better practitioner.”

Bourdon is married to Dr. Richard Roy, also featured in this issue, and has explored many of the same techniques that Roy has explored or used in his research.

Giving Back Bourdon became involved in an educational group called Quest Alliance early on. “That was my introduction to patient advocacy.

education and practice management, it focused on personal growth – vision, commitment, integrity and purpose. It helped its participants understand that there is a much bigger vision for their life and that what is important is giving back.”

This is a philosophy that has guided Bourdon through her career and led to a rich and deep involvement with chiropractic professional groups and advocacy. "I will always be so grateful to those who sacrificed so much for our profession and fought for our place in the health care field. I owe it to those visionaries to do all that I can to keep the flame burning. I can only hope that my generation will inspire the young chiropractors and that they will continue to preserve and promote our great profession.

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” she adds.

OCQ and CCPA When the Canadian Chiropractic Protective Association (CCPA) recruited her, she was volunteering with the disciplinary committee for the Ordre des chiropraticiens du Québec (OCQ), where she served for 19 years – not a light endeavour, she admits, but she feels the experience contributed to making her a better chiropractor. “It made me more acutely aware of how things can be misinterpreted. Often through no fault of their own, a chiropractor can find themselves facing a formal complaint.” Today, she says, it has helped her with her work on the board of directors of the CCPA and intensified her appreciation of the important role the CCPA plays in protecting its members.

CCEB Adding to her work with OCQ, she went to become an examiner with the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB). “I had a lot

of suggestions as to ways they could facilitate the job of the examiners and I shared them early on. This initiative resulted in me being asked to sit on the Board.” Eventually she became Chair and was proud of the work they did in keeping the exam standards high. “Learning about the psychometrics, the reliability, validity and practicality of questions was an interesting journey. When I started, there was no limit to the number of times a person could take the exam.” That changed on her watch, as she and fellow board members reflected on the question of public protection and the credibility of the profession in the future. Pleased with the quality of the CCEB exams today, Bourdon says that students who are successful at the exams, “should be very proud.”

CCA While still on the CCEB Board and newly recruited to the CCPA, Bourdon was asked to become the national spokesperson for the CCA. She was pleased with the uptake by several mainstream publications interested in chiropractic and its applications to everyday life. “Reporters knew that we could give advice on things other than low back pain such as how to choose a back pack for your child or what to look for in a mattress, or help for headache management.”

The journalists she spoke to seemed to understand that chiropractors had more to offer than simply spinal adjustments.

Today she says, “We need to work on public perception. We have so much to offer to lighten the load and help our beleaguered health care system.” I ask myself, “how did we get so far down the list when it comes to health care choices? Far too often, by the time patients end up in our offices, they’ve tried just

about everything and they’re often so discouraged.”

“When we talk about patient education, to me it’s important that a patient come for the right reasons but also that they stay for the right reasons. The same holds true for advocacy – get involved for the right reasons and encourage others to get involved. It can’t be about you and that means keeping your ego in check and focusing on how to best serve patients, the profession and our communities.”

Supporting CMCC Aside from her volunteer and advocacy work, Bourdon has been a huge supporter of CMCC for many years and is a member of the Governors' Club, a group of highly committed donors who have helped CMCC with capital projects including computer equipment such as iPads® for examinations and Force-Sensing Table TechnologyTM (FSTT®) for the Simulation Lab and technique areas and technology improvements.

Through her part in the CMCC capital campaign, she in essence helped build CMCC’s current campus, which she continues to support. She has also given to the endowment that will continue to support CMCC’s McMorland Research Chair.

Encouraging students Bourdon is pleased that one of her patients will be entering CMCC this fall. This will be the eighth she has encouraged to follow the chiropractic path.

Bourdon feels very blessed to have been called to serve the profession.

"It’s been an amazing journey and I feel very fortunate. When I call it an honour and a privilege, I mean it.

Every day I look forward to what I do and I go to bed at night, feeling like I’ve made a difference.”

RICHARD ROY, PhD ENHANCING CHIROPRACTIC OUTCOMES

A three month trial…

You could say chiropractic chose Dr. Richard Roy. An adept baseball player, he first set his sights on a life in professional sports, but was waylaid by an injury that affected his pitching arm and undermined his plans; so he set his sights on his next dream and joined a hockey team to satisfy his love and need of sport.

One day, as Roy was waiting at a bus stop, the owner of his hockey team pulled up in his car to talk. He asked Roy: “What are you planning to do with your life?” When he learned that Roy planned to apply to medicine and wanted to become a neurosurgeon, he challenged him to consider chiropractic instead.

As a result of this instrumental conversation, Richard decided he would give chiropractic college a three-month trial and headed off to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport Iowa. At the three-month mark, he decided it was worth continuing.

At the time, the fact that Palmer didn’t require an undergraduate degree was an incentive for Roy. Once he was there, he was impressed by the strength of the institution’s internal philosophy, that the body has an uncanny ability to put itself right if given a nudge, and that it produced chiropractors who were adept at adjustments by the time they hit graduation.

“They teach you to trust the body to respond to the adjustment” says Roy. “The patient’s brain knows how to manage its connections.”

He has also used motion x-rays to record the reduction of joint dysfunctions as well as using a self-report questionnaire (Oswestry) to determine pain level before and after treatment. Each subject began with severe back pain and had never before received chiropractic care before participating in his research, which involved a series of 10 adjustments. Again, he was able to measure positive changes for the patient.

A PhD and a surprise discovery Fast forward to 2002 when his daughter was studying for her Master’s degree, Roy’s previous interest in pursuing his own Masters resurfaced. He studied the neurophysiology of the spine and completed his Master‘s and then a PhD at the Université du Québec à Montréal while he continued to practice fulltime.

Roy ensures that all of his research is geared to being practical, to help the clinician in daily practice. He often uses skin temperature as an outcome measurement via thermometry (often called thermography by chiropractors). This measurement can be used as a control – every re-examination establishes if the paraspinal circulation changes and improves. “As chiropractors, we are selling the invisible, so one of the measurements I use is skin temperature,” he says, explaining that it can be easily measured.

During his studies, Roy made a discovery of a side benefit that he had not anticipated in using chiropractic instruments to assist with adjustments. He could now literally see their efficiency and efficacy in the laboratory. He began to use the Activator and later multiple percussion instruments with variable frequencies in his studies.

He has since investigated the change in blood interleukin 6, produced in response to injury, as well as C reactive protein, which gauges inflammation. Roy demonstrated that patients’ blood

Sharing the results Pursuing his PhD has given Roy a new way to look at the profession and to apply critical analysis to other research and conclusions. “I feel

it is important for chiropractors to understand why our profession is unique, and to continue to reach to understand the science behind it. The truth is very different from past dogma.”

that will provide practical applications for chiropractors and chiropractic patients, in addition to continuing to share his findings with colleagues and chiropractors worldwide.

His plans are to continue to research and to pursue questions

At the moment, he is involved with Neuroinfiniti, a company

that produces an instrument that measures stress response. He uses their equipment to collect data on brave wave response to chiropractic care.

GLOBAL SPINE CARE INITIATIVE PAPERS AVAILABLE ONLINE extremely well-represented in the GSCI. Two CMCC faculty members, Drs. Pierre Côté and Deborah Kopansky-Giles were leading authors and other faculty participated in the modified Delphi processes to build consensus and paper authorship.

Most of the research for the systematic reviews was conducted in the UOIT-CMCC CDPR.

The European Spine Journal has published an exciting series of papers from the Global Spine Care Initiative (GSCI), a project of World Spine Care. The GSCI has been a four year initiative, involving the collaboration of an international group of spine care experts and researchers that contributed to this project. This series of papers includes a new and more inclusive classification system for spinal disorders to ensure that anyone with a spine-related concern or disorder

can be triaged and helped in a practical, person-centred way.

This paper series is available online and will appear as a supplemental issue of the European Spine Journal this fall.

It is hoped that these papers will offer solutions to the challenges faced by people living in low-and middle-income communities and the providers and systems needed to deliver spine services in these settings.

BC BACKSWING CMCC's 6th annual BC BackSwing golf tournament took place under sunny skies on Wednesday, May 9 at the picturesque Richmond Country Club in Richmond, BC. The event is an opportunity to raise funds for CMCC but also to engage with local chiropractors and other friends of CMCC. Thirty-four golfers thoroughly enjoyed 18 holes of golf on a 6800 yard, par 72 course which is known as one of British Columbia's premiere golf venues. Set within the greenbelt of the agricultural land reserve, this championship level golf course is known for its tree lined fairways, well-positioned bunkers, and its signature raised, undulating greens.

Additional guests joined golfers in the evening for a sumptuous buffet dinner along with a silent auction featuring an array of items ranging from Paul Simon concert tickets, to gift baskets and restaurant vouchers. Guests also participated in a raffle, 50-50 draw and could even purchase mulligans prior to the tournament.

Perry Armitage from McQuarrie Hunter LLP, also a silver sponsor, presented during dinner on the topic of the ICBC minor injury cap and what this will mean for British Columbians. Dr. Wickes also provided an update on developments at CMCC. Congratulations to the winning foursome of Keith Beaton, Llew Gittons, Brian Ralston and William Rogal who shot a very impressive 12 under par 60! Each of the winners received a gift certificate from Kintec, a bottle of wine and a golf umbrella.

Thanks to the support of participants, sponsors and donors, the event raised over $9,000 for CMCC. We are also grateful to Richmond Country Club for all their assistance leading up to and during the tournament.

FRIENDS FOR LIFE BIKE RALLY OUTREACH knowledge, smile at someone and receive a smile in return or, treat a rider and receive a warm “thank you” for helping them cross the finish line is proof that we can all make a big difference in peoples’ lives.

In July 2018, eight CMCC interns and two CMCC Clinicians accompanied riders for The Friends for Life Bike Rally, July 29 to August 5, offering treatment and support during the long bike ride from Toronto to Montreal. The annual event is a key fundraiser for the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA).

This year, CMCC’s team and supporters contributed $3,000 to a record $1.73 million raised!

Thank you to team members Jared Barrieau, Brandon Davy, Iain Harrington, Corinna Lee, Brett Lypchuk, Alison MacDonald, Megan O'Neill, Madeleine Shen, Matthew Lepore and Taylor Ostrander and supervising clinicians Dr. Jason Bonar and Dr. Janet D’Arcy.

The ride itself is transformative on a number of levels for all participants.

Post Bike Rally: Saturday, August 4, 2018 Thank you to the BIKE RALLY for the excitement and freedom of making us vulnerable. By meeting so many participants and crew members, performing outrageous dance warm-ups in front of the entire rally and by wearing red dresses in public, it allowed us to feel, to be real and authentic. We tore down brick walls and felt every emotion, allowing us to welcome and embrace all the opportunities we were given.

The bike rally was important to our education because it allowed us to answer the “why.” As students we know “who” we are; we know “how” we treat our patients; but we get little exposure as to the “why” we do it. By going on this bike rally, it gave us the opportunity to start our careers living altruistically. It was an honour. It is remembering that becoming a doctor of chiropractic comes with responsibility to service, and this shapes our ability to contribute. We used our skills to experience the fact that every day gives us an opportunity to affect someone’s life, whether that is treating a rider on the rally or helping one of our fellow interns pack up their tent. We look forward to contributing again in the future.

Thank you to the BIKE RALLY for everyone we met. We are grateful to have learned from our patients about persistence and small acts of kindness.
