Message from the President

Welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year. For those of you in your first year with us, I welcome you on behalf of our Board of Governors, students, faculty, and administration to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. You are now a member of a vibrant, diverse, inclusive institution committed to evidence-based patient care and innovative program delivery, including a growing experiential learning component of our exceptional program.

For close to 78 years, CMCC has provided its students with an excellent education, preparing them for success in the healthcare profession. CMCC has long been recognized for the quality of its programs and for the exceptional team of healthcare professionals and graduates who practice in over 52 countries around the world. Since 2022, CMCC has been able to offer its graduates the opportunity to apply for licensure in the US and Canada. CMCC is the only chiropractic program in the world that is accredited by agencies in two countries – The Council on Chiropractic Education Canada and its American counterpart -- the Council on Chiropractic Education (US).

Our responsibility as educators and mentors is to awaken your curiosity, expand your knowledge, develop your skills, and offer leadership and engagement opportunities to prepare you for a successful career in healthcare, be it as a practitioner, researcher, instructor or academic leader. It is our obligation and our privilege to prepare you for a career that will allow you to contribute to the health and well-being of our shared communities.

At CMCC, we strongly believe that chiropractic education should provide vast opportunities for experiential learning, beginning in the first year and culminating with a broad clinical experience. Over years, CMCC’s curriculum has added greater opportunities for clinical observations and more hours of laboratory instruction. Currently, we are focusing efforts on the transformation of our preclinic curriculum, of which about 44% is delivered in a lecture-based format, to an active learning model with less lecture time and more clinical application, problem-solving, small-group interactions, and hands-on experiences.

Our 2022-25 Strategic Plan addresses these opportunities with strategies to advance CMCC’s ability to meet its mission to deliver world class chiropractic education, research and patient care. The plan addresses the anticipated development of a dedicated Learning and Assessment Centre. This type of centre would have multiple exam rooms with sophisticated digital recording devices and supportive task training equipment. And, through the generosity of our dedicated donors, we have now implemented the use of auscultation training devices that fit over a standard stethoscope and can deliver murmurs, abnormal lung sounds, etc., when a student is examining a standardized patient.

CMCC has invested heavily in technology, an investment that proved invaluable over the past several years. These investments include cloud-based lecture capture that allows students to tailor the pace of their learning and allows access to unlimited opportunities to review materials in preparation for examinations. Our digital examination platform allows both on-campus and remote testing in a secure manner and tracking of student competencies as they develop over the four years at CMCC.

CMCC’s Simulation Laboratories, with specially designed adjusting tables, delayed video feedback, and programmable simulated patient manikins, provide an exceptional setting to enhance diagnostic and treatment skills. The Force Sensing Table Technology (FSTT®) and the Human Analogue Mannequin (HAM®) developed at CMCC have been adopted by numerous chiropractic programs around the world. In Anatomy, we offer students the use of the Anatomage® Tables, life-sized virtual dissection tables used to augment our traditional dissection program. These tables are very versatile for our students and instructors, allowing integration with microanatomy, histology, X-ray, CT, and MRI images.

At CMCC, we strive to create an environment where students can be empowered, realize their potential, and become the leaders we need for a brighter future. I encourage you to get involved at CMCC through clubs, student government and other activities. These years are a time of transformative personal and intellectual growth and exploration, and an opportunity to network and make lifelong friends, connections, and memories.

I look forward to a great year and to seeing you on campus.
