MISSION Saint Columbkille Partnership School is a community of families, educators, and partners inspired by the values of the Gospel. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, we search for the truth with joy, practice the good with conviction, and contemplate the beautiful as we prepare students for lives of faith, service, and leadership.

Since 1901, it has strived to educate children in Allston/Brighton and surrounding communities, providing not only an excellent education, but also enabling students to grow in faith and appreciation of their personal gifts.

Last year was not easy for any of us. My thoughts are with all of you— especially those who lost friends and family; those who suffered illness; those who endured long separations from loved ones; and those who lost employment.

As a laboratory school of Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, Saint Columbkille has received assistance to enhance curriculum, faculty, facilities, and financial aid. It has also gained from the energy, talent, and commitment of undergraduate student volunteers and future teachers from BC. Saint Columbkille and Boston College have helped one another in efforts to encourage their students to develop their minds, hearts, and souls; understand the importance of the common good; and work for the greater glory of God, goals of Catholic education for generations.

Yet, you chose, in this time of extraordinary hardship, to support our school. Parents closely adhered to our protocols. Alumni, parents, and friends stepped up with financial support. Our faculty and staff were remarkable, weaving a spirit of joy through our classrooms each day. And our students impressed me most of all! Day after day, we witnessed their resilience, friendship, creativity, and adaptability.

Please know that your dedication and support of Saint Columbkille make it possible for not only young people today, but also in the future, to learn and be inspired to go about doing good, as Christ did while he was on this Earth.

This report highlights the strengths of our school community during a most extraordinary year. It also shares how your support not only helped us navigate a difficult time, but also positions us for a remarkable and hopeful future. Welcome Saint Columbkille Partnership School is the only lab school in Boston offering a pre-K through Grade 8 Catholic education supporting cutting-edge approaches to teaching and learning in the humanities, the arts, and the sciences against the backdrop of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Saint Columbkille Partnership School is among a small group of schools across the world with a distinctive and strong collaboration with a leading research university — in our case Boston College — allowing for a more thoughtful approach to each child’s education. We attract brilliant teachers, enthusiastic learners, and forward-thinking families. We are mission-driven and committed to ensuring that a high-quality Catholic education is available to all who seek it. JEN KOWIESKI: Well, I’ll fast-forward through several years of teaching—I absolutely loved being a classroom teacher, from second grade all the way up to eighth grade. And then I became an assistant principal at the school where I was in Chicago, and I enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Notre Dame. Through that program, I was reminded of what brought me into Catholic education a couple of decades ago, what the real power of Catholic schools holds. And it centered me on what kind of school I wanted to be in. I love the school where I was, but I was looking for a place that was more diverse. One of my professors told me she was moving to Boston and her children would be attending an incredible school, called Saint Columbkille Partnership School. I responded to her that every Sunday, when I go to Mass and I’m praying for some clarity about where I should be, right next to me is the statue of Saint Columbkille—who I’d never heard of before! When I came to visit the school it affirmed all of the wonderful things I had heard about it being a welcoming, diverse community. As I walked through, Saint Cols felt like home.

YOUR IMPACT: OUR PEOPLE

PEGGY: That is a good feeling. As you’ve completed your first year, what have you learned? JEN: The school really is the strong community I thought it was. There’s no way we would have made it through this past year without our faculty, and without parents who are committed, not just to their child’s education, but the education and well-being of everyone in the school. And I’ve come to see how many different people, such as alumni, community members, grandparents, and Boston College alumni, support this beautiful institution. It’s outstanding: the number of people who never attended the school and never sent their children here, who still see the school as either an important philanthropic opportunity or a place where they want to volunteer and give their time. PEGGY: Where do you see other areas of growth? JEN: The areas of growth are those where we have a good foundation and can strengthen and enhance, including the elementary reading curriculum, the social and emotional health of our students, and responsible

technology use. We have identified these areas as priorities for our current students, but also opportunities to grow as a school. PEGGY: From whom do you draw your inspiration? JEN: Like everyone I get busy and sometimes forget, but I read the Gospel for the day and see what word or phrase speaks to me. And I’m grateful to have a network of colleagues throughout the United States who are Catholic school leaders. So on any given day, I’m calling someone to check in and see how they’re doing, and also to share what’s happening at our school and glean some wisdom. My grandmother was someone very special. She passed away last spring. At her memorial service, everyone who spoke talked about her being someone who never had an unkind word, that she was thoughtful and generous, and people just felt loved and accepted in her presence. When you’re around someone like that, you can be yourself more authentically and also perhaps be a better version of you. And I think that ties a lot into who we are as a school. I was already pulled in hook, line, and sinker when I saw the motto that Saint Cols is a place where children are known and loved.

And I believe that deeply—that it’s only when our students know that they are loved and they are accepted for who they are, that they can be the best version of themselves. PEGGY: Red Sox fan or Cubs fan? JEN: I do have a Cubs T-shirt, but I couldn’t tell you a single player on the Cubs team this year! I’m looking forward to going to a game at Fenway. Someone will have to teach me about the Red Sox, but of course that’s what middle school students are for! PEGGY: Anything else you would like us to know? JEN: While learning is hard work, it should always bring about great joy. So again, I’m grateful for our teachers, last year, who found ways to weave joy into everyday moments from our kindergarten dance parties, to some fun competitions that our middle school students had, and everything in between. I’m grateful to be in a place where joy is part of our mission statement.

Although Erica Rego’s official title is Director of Admissions and Outreach, she might as well be called “Director of Student and Family Success” at Saint Columbkille.

Her connection with families begins—but far from ends—with recruiting and enrolling prospective students and onboarding them to be part of the school community. In fact, she was in their exact shoes a few years ago when she chose Saint Columbkille for her own daughter, Sophie. Now, a proud freshman at Holy Cross, Sophie still considers Saint Cols her family. And like everyone, a year of necessary pandemic distancing left Erica more eager and appreciative of a future return to normal. “I’m definitely a people person,” she says, and when it was safe enough for families and children to visit the school in-person, “it’s like I felt alive again.” As seen across other Catholic schools in the region able to open for in-person learning, Saint Cols enjoyed a bump in enrollment. Rego finds joy and takes pride in the many families who have re-enrolled and who will get to experience Saint Cols in its full communal glory—from formal after-school activities to playful lingering on the playground into the afternoons.

For more than 500 years of Jesuit education, one enduring ideal is cura personalis: meeting students where they are and caring for their growth—not just on a grade sheet but, soulfully, as “whole people.”

“One thing I can tell you is that—across the board—once you’ve enrolled here, you are a part of the family,” she says. “It’s not just about the school—it’s about being a partner in bringing your kids up in life.” For Rego, community care means wearing a variety of hats—from serving as a liaison and interpreter to the Portuguese and Spanish communities, to helping field questions about everything from health insurance to immigration issues to city bus schedules. Sometimes families arrive in the U.S. without having completed middle or high school themselves, making Saint Cols a launching pad for first-generation college hopefuls. Like so many others on staff at Saint Cols, she’s inspired to fulfill God’s calling for her. And there’s been one mantra of compassion that she’s drawn upon throughout this challenging year: “Someone told me every time you’re helping someone to look at them and see Jesus’ face.”

For David Walsh, a triple Eagle from BC High through to a master’s in education, those ideals were central to not just surviving, but thriving in a pandemic year. The unprecedented demands of masks, social distancing, and protection against viral spread meant that summer lesson planning was more hope than certainty. “I had to adapt pretty much every lesson I have. It’s such an unbelievable variable that was thrown into it,” he says. “You have to be ready to adjust on the fly and try to keep that open mindset.” Fortunately, he was following his 7th grade homeroom into their 8th grade year and had already bonded deeply with the cohort. “I just kind of felt like I knew everything about them,” he says. “And the students were always willing to meet you halfway”—including during two of Walsh’s quarantines when he taught them from his home.

Walsh had to be equally adaptable to teaching civics during a year of tremendous social and political turmoil, but found the social justice calling of the Saint Cols curriculum inspiring. “I want students to understand why the world is the way it is,” he says. “And give them the tools to address it in the future.” These tools included integrating conversations about Black Lives Matter protests and economic inequality—giving students space for individual reflection on the same big, difficult conversations with which society as a whole is wrestling. As a first-generation college student himself, he finds further inspiration in helping young people forge a path toward high school and beyond: “I’ll try to make myself that much more of an extra resource to talk about their future, because the student’s path might be very different from what their parents’ was.”

A NOTE from A PARENT

We could not have made it through this unprecedented year without the resilience and hard work of our students and their families. They adhered carefully to health protocols, delayed travel and gatherings, and persevered through personal hardship. Our donors helped us keep them safe by providing funds for special equipment and facilities maintenance and improvements, including a completely renovated health office. Additionally, we upgraded technology, refinished floors in the preschool classrooms and hallways, and installed an improved air filtration system. We hired additional staff for cleaning and rented two large tents to better use our outdoor space.

GRATEFUL FOR THE SAINT COLS “SOLDIERS OF EDUCATION” My family started our Saint Columbkille Partnership School experience in September 2020. I was nervous and worried, starting a new school in the midst of a pandemic. How would my children make new friends wearing masks and social distancing? My family had only stepped foot inside the building very briefly when the kids took their assessments. On the first day of school, I opened my car door, they got out, and I drove away. But this is how much I trusted Saint Cols that they would be safe. Gratefully, they did know what their teachers looked like due to the thoughtful videos each teacher prepared before the school year started. My boys came out of school that first day so happy and so excited. Max told me a classmate came up to him, fist bumped him and said, “Hi, my name is Jimmy.” I was so impressed by that child; that was a true testament to the welcoming, inclusive, and nurturing environment here at Saint Cols. Every morning my boys were excited and proud to put on their uniforms. I believe there is a strong sense of accountability and responsibility that is placed on these children and children yearn for this. Every morning, when we dropped off the boys, my daughter would ask why she was not in school. Watching her do Zooms with BPS K1 was simply not right, so we enrolled her as well in October. After each of her first days, she would run into the car and say, “I had the best day ever!”

I am not a crier, but I must admit in those early days of the year, I teared up watching the staff at dismissal and how committed everyone has been all year to these children keeping them safe and educating them. The race was started in 2011 by the Boston College hockey team as a way to raise money to support Saint Columbkille Partnership School. Funds raised for the BC Race to Educate support programs and services ensuring that all students at Saint Columbkille receive a high-quality Catholic education. We look forward to getting back to Boston College’s Alumni Stadium in 2022 for an in-person 12th annual BC Race to Educate.

The Class of 1962 is a close group of alumni: they gather multiple times per year in Brighton, on Cape Cod, and in Florida to celebrate their friendship and high school memories. In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 1962 virtually banded together to host ongoing Zoom meetings to catch up and reminisce about their days at Saint Cols. They also formed a fundraising team for the 2021 virtual BC Race to Educate, and together they raised more than $1,200 for financial aid at Saint Columbkille Partnership School.
