Há uma urgência na obra de Patrícia Almeida (1970-2017) que nos fala de uma sociedade disfuncional em pleno turbilhão. O gesto de fotografar aparece como um desejo de dar sentido a essa urgência.

In the work of Patrícia Almeida (1970-2017) there is an urgency that speaks of a dysfunctional society in turmoil. As she photographs this world, she seems to materialise the desire of giving a sense to this urgency.

Patrícia Almeida interessava-se pela construção das imagens pelos media e o início do seu trabalho centra-se numa pesquisa de cariz mais documental, mais objetiva. Mais tarde, uma dimensão subjetiva torna-se mais presente na obra conjugando simultaneamente o lirismo íntimo e especulativo dos seus ensaios visuais com uma crueza um tanto iconoclasta de uma análise da sociedade portuguesa (e não só) no tempo da Troika.

Patrícia Almeida was interested in how the media created images and, in the first years of her career, she focused on a documental, objective research. Later, she embraced a more subjective stance in her work, combining the intimate and speculative lyricism of her visual essays with the almost iconoclastic rawness of her analysis of Portuguese society (but not only) during the years of the Troika.

This exhibition comprises works that address and reflect on contemporaneity in two almost opposite ways. While one set of works has the notions of community and liberty as its keystone, albeit always questioning the ideas of idyllic, of harmony between human and nature, and even of suspended time, the other set includes images of a more political nature that question established norms and portray the revolt and desire for change induced by the economic crisis.

Nesta exposição, apresentam-se trabalhos que falam de duas atitudes quase opostas no pensamento e trato da contemporaneidade. Por um lado, existe um conjunto de trabalhos nos quais as noções de comunidade e liberdade são centrais, mas que não deixam de questionar os conceitos de idílico, da harmonia homem natureza e mesmo de tempo suspenso. Por outro, mostram-se imagens de natureza mais política, nas quais as normas são questionadas, onde a crise leva à revolta e ao desejo de mudança.

Whether more romantic or more political, Patrícia Almeida’s search for utopian models of society stands out in all her works, a search that never eschewed showing how fragile and ephemeral these utopias are.

Sejam mais românticas ou mais políticas, nas obras de Patrícia Almeida prevalece a sua busca por modelos utópicos de sociedade, revelando sempre a fragilidade e efemeridade dessas utopias.

PALCO, 2012 A fotografia Palco faz parte da série We Are All Astronauts, um projeto inédito da Patrícia Almeida e David-Alexandre Guéniot que vem na continuação de All Beauty Must Die (2010-2011) e que pretende explorar as ligações entre romantismo e ecologia.

Works

APNEIA (Adaline), 2016 A série Apneia junta retratos de intérpretes realizados durante o ensaio da peça O que fazer daqui para trás (2016) do coreógrafo João Fiadeiro. O espetáculo consiste numa corrida contínua dos intérpretes nas imediações do local de representação. Interrompendo de vez em quando as suas corridas, irrompem no palco para partilhar com os espetadores o que acabaram de testemunhar na rua ou os pensamentos que lhe ocorreram enquanto corriam.

Num estúdio improvisado instalado à entrada do palco, Adaline, uma das intérpretes, é fotografada em intervalos regulares segundos antes de entrar em cena, enquanto vai progressivamente perdendo o fôlego.

APNEIA (Adaline), 2016 The series Apneia [Apnea] comprises a set of portraits of performers in the play O que fazer daqui para trás (2016) by choreographer João Fiadeiro. The images were captured during the show’s rehearsals. In this choreography, the performers run in the proximity of the presentation’s venue and, every now and then, run to the stage where they share with the audience what they have just seen outside or what they were thinking while running. In an improvised photo studio set up on the stage’s entrance, Adaline, one of the performers, is photographed at regular intervals, seconds before she climbs on stage, as she progressively loses her breath.

ALL BEAUTY MUST DIE, 2009-2011 All Beauty Must Die explores a natural and idyllic ambience while adding a layer of references from 19th century English Romanticism and pop-rock culture. The title is borrowed from Nick Cave’s song Where the Wild Roses Grow, performed in a duet with Kylie Minogue, and from John Keats’s Ode on Melancholy: “She dwells with Beauty - Beauty that must die.” These universes highlight a mode of thinking that sees youth as the peak of human life.

They emphasize the emotion, the experimental drive, the attraction of tragic love and melancholia as modern and utopic ideals associated to a desire to escape.

ALL BEAUTY MUST DIE, 2009-2011 All Beauty Must Die propõe a exploração de um ambiente natural idílico, misturando referências do romantismo literário inglês do século XIX e da cultura da música pop/ rock. O título tem a sua origem na canção Where the Wild Roses Grow de Nick Cave, cantada em dueto com Kylie Minogue, e do poema Ode on Melancholy de John Keats: “She dwells with Beauty - Beauty that must die.” Esses imaginários valorizam uma visão do mundo centrada na juventude como o auge da vida humana. Destacam a emoção, a pulsão experimental, a atração pelo amor trágico e pela melancolia enquanto ideais modernos e utópicos associados ao desejo de fuga.

NÃO TENHO MEDO (15-10-2011), 2016 The installation Não Tenho Medo [I Am Not Afraid] is an exhibition that features the contents of the 2012 fanzine Não tenho medo porque não tenho nada [I Am Not Afraid Because I Have Nothing]. In 2011, the 15th of October was a day of global protest. In Portugal, the protest took the motto of “15 de Outubro, Democracia Sai à Rua!” [15th of October, Democracy Takes to the Streets!] and materialized in a march and concentration in front of the National Assembly. Once they were gathered there, the protesters broke the police line and transformed the stairs that lead into the Assembly into an amphitheatre.

After they dispersed, the artist collected the banners and other protest materials used during the day, which were abandoned on the streets, walls and surrounding bushes.

NÃO TENHO MEDO (15-10-2011), 2016 A instalação Não Tenho Medo é uma versão expositiva do fanzine Não tenho medo porque não tenho nada (2012).

15 de Outubro de 2011 foi um dia de protesto global.

Em Portugal, o protesto chamou-se “15 de Outubro, Democracia Sai à Rua!” e em Lisboa houve uma marcha até à Assembleia da República. Aí chegados, os manifestantes furaram o cordão policial e transformaram a escadaria num anfiteatro. Depois da manifestação dispersar, a artista encontrou e recolheu nos arbustos, nos muros e nas ruas adjacentes à Assembleia, os placards com as palavras de ordem que os manifestantes tinham usado durante o dia.

manchetes de jornais, nacionais e internacionais, com o objetivo de compor um arquivo visual passível de configurar uma paisagem mediática atenta aos acontecimentos de grande escala que abalaram o mundo. Num workshop, os alunos da Escola Superior de Arte e Design de Caldas da Rainha foram desafiados a reconstituir fotografias de responsáveis políticos publicadas na imprensa. A decisão política fica assim incorporada nos corpos desses jovens estudantes, e com ela, todas as possíveis implicações dessas decisões para as gerações futuras.

A MINHA VIDA VAI MUDAR (2012-2017) These works are part of the project Ma Vie Va Changer [My Life Will Change], a project that spread through different media: an installation, a workshop, a newspaper, an artist’s book and a video. In 2011, Patrícia Almeida starts collecting images from national and international newspapers with the intention of building a visual archive that could configure a media landscape that somehow portrayed the large-scale events that shook the world.

During a workshop, the students at Escola Superior de Arte e Design de Caldas da Rainha were challenged to recreate photographs of political personalities that had been published in newspapers. In this way, the issue of political choice is imprinted in the bodies of these students, as well as all the possible implications this choice might entail for future generations.

A MINHA VIDA VAI MUDAR / PEDRAS (2013) Durante a fase de investigação de Ma Vie Va Changer, foram criadas várias séries de fotografias suscetíveis de integrar um arquivo visual sobre intervenções sociais e políticas relativas ao período de crise que Portugal atravessou entre 2011 e 2014. As fotografias das pedras intervencionadas da Galeria de Arte Ambulante (Daniel Melim e Tiago Gandra) integram este arquivo.

A MINHA VIDA VAI MUDAR / PEDRAS (2013) During the research for Ma Vie Va Changer, Patrícia Almeida made a series of photographs with the intention of (possibly) integrating them in a visual archive of social and political action during the crisis that shook the country between 2011 and 2014. The photographs of the rocks [pedras, in Portuguese] in Galeria de Arte Ambulante (Daniel Melim and Tiago Gandra) are part of this archive.
