House Two can boast of many distinctions during the 1980-81 school year. The house was the first of the female Kouses to obtain T-shirts, which bear the slogan “THE LUCK OF THE IRISH”. House Two carried away first prize in the 1980 Christmas decorations contest with the Peanuts Christmas theme, “WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS”, which was manifested through such original decoration techniques as carolers outside and beautiful House Two women under the mistletoe on each floor. The house sponsored a square dance in January which proved to be a great success, and in February they again showed holiday spirit by decorating the front windows for Valentine’s Day. House Two average resident’s age is 20.3 years, oldest of the UMR women’s dorms. The House Two “family” includes several outstanding varsity basketball players, and it also can boast of two members who have lived in the house for four years. All in all 1980-81 has been a very memorable year for House Two.

Farrar Hall — House Four has many original distinctions. This year marked the first time that Farrar Hall was occupied by women. Surprisingly, all but four of the original fifty-six coeds were freshmen; three of the remaining four were transfer students. The one exception was the returning RA, who has been responsible for a lot of the fun in this house. For example, she recommeded “The 11:30 Dirties” highly to all her residents as a unique viewing experience. In spite of her guidance, they had to learn most of the “ins” and “outs” of college life through trial and e rro r............ no one told them cats weren’t allowed in the dorm . . . . they only wanted a mascot! Apparently, some well intentioned men wanted to replace their lost pet by supplying each of the girls with her very own bat on Halloween . . . . you should have hear them screaming with glee (?). — When the time came for the annual snowball fight, one of the girls got confused and threw out her “bra”, thinking it was a panty raid! They have all made innocent mistakes like that, even the fourth floor residents who claim to be the “next best thing to heaven” . . . . Surely they mean they are all angels............ don’t they?

The men of House Five claim to present the finest House in the quad. Finest, in that they combine academics, athletics, and sociability in a balanced combination, the results of which are the quad’s highest House GP A, plenty of good times, time-honored traditions and good friends. The halls often get a little noisy; but only in a friendly atmosphere between house members could this happen, and everyone gets their work done anyway (usually).

The closest University housing to campus, Carnahan Hall housed 23 students just across the street from the Physics building for the 80-81 school year. With only a few exceptions, the fellows at Carnaham were all freshmen at UMR and consequently had to learn the ropes from scratch. They adapted quickly to the strenuous Rolla lifestyle, and many became involved in school activities. Carnahan residents were active in M H A East intramu rals, TJ activities, campus club intramurals, UMR swim team, baseball and several other extra-curricular events. KCLU listeners may have known it as “the up and coming place”, but to 107 UMR students this year, it was known as home — the Manor Inn. Well, maybe not exactly home as that word usually implies a warm bed and good food. The heat had a habit o f not working on the coldest days and nights, the “500 Building” inhabitants also woke up to ice water for showers several times, and for meals residents were forced to subject their taste-buds to the evils ofTJ, the U. Center, or some combination o f cooking in their rooms and eating out. And as long as no one overslept, the Miner Connection buses provided reliable transportation to and from campus and meals. — Throughout the year, when residents were not busy with the usual UMR nightmarish task o f homework, they found release in various forms. Besides sliding on “Wet Willy” in the fall. Frisbee and softball in the parking lot, an occasional party was slipped by (?) the RA’s notice. Second semester, the first (and last?) Manor Inn party was held at “Tech Engine” in February, and a canoe trip on the Current River in March was also sponsored. — A sa part of MHA East, Manor residents attended a barbeque at Meramec Springs in May, and participated in various intramural sports. They contributed to the first place doubles tennis team and placed first in heavyweight wrestling. Also, an all Manor team took second place in bowling.

1980-’81 was a year o f studying, tests, labs and . . . . partying for the men o f the “Rustic M otel”. Many o f the “Rustic Rats” graced the front lawn o f the motel during numerous sunning parties. The m otel always showed a flurry o f activity since the “Rats” enjoyed such vigorous entertainment as sleeping, maid chasing and girl watching. The highlight o f the year arrived when the “Rats” threw the “First Animal Rustic Kegger”, and three girls showed up and stayed for ten minutes (big deal!) — The “Rats” would like to express their appreciation to their HMFIC Bob Pressly for a job well done.

During the Spring semester, the house was involved in a community pro ject with the City o f Rolla through the Parks and Recreation Department. Over all, this last year has been a full one for N u Deuteron, and they are optimistic about the upcoming year to be even more suc cessful. R. The fraternity was founded by seven men on December 4, 1906. These seven founders, often called the Seven Jewels, initiated a trend of leadership, character, and moral fiber that still exists among Black college men today. Here at U.M .R., Alpha Phi Alpha opens doors to the other organizations on the campus such as the Student Council, Interfraternal Council, Alpha Phi Omega Ser vice Fraternity, Gamma Alpha Delta Ser vice Fraternity and others. They have been established on the U.M.R. campus since 1965 and during that time their voice has been heard con cerning a variety o f issues. Operating a fraternity house involves business and they often render their ser vices to the community.

The school year 1980-81 proved to be very successful and rewarding for Kappa Sigma. Again they placed well in Intramu ral Sports as indicated by their capture o f the track championship and placing 2nd in wrestling and football. Continuing tradi tion, social functions at Kappa Sigma were numerous and full o f imagination as de monstrated by their 20 ton sand beach party. The general goal of the Chapter is to achieve overall excellence and to develop pride in the system o f brotherhood, both at the local level and nationally. Once again they compete for the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Founder’s Cup, which has made its home in Rolla for many years now. The Brothers feel they have the in side track to once again obtain the award because they have seen fit to bring “Rolla” to many campuses, notably Columbia, Western Illinois, and Purdue. Spilled be verages, ingested liquor, and severe diso r ie n ta tio n have lo n g b e e n a R o lla trademark that the chapter has worked very hard to introduce everywhere. Locally, the Phi Kaps were permitted to donate playoff kegs in many major sports, including football, soccer, basketball, and handball (next year’s goal: the Ultimate Frisbee finals). And, as every year, their frolicking freshmen were swinging grue some shillelaghs at model snakes, causing headaches for the B. & G. boys and crushed rubber for Board Reps.

Gamma Lambda Chapter o f Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity here at U.M .R. has really had an excellent year. Beginning last fall, many o f the members have gotten very involved with campus activities, including Student U nion Board, KM NR-FM, the Missouri Miner, W esley Foundation, Climbing Club, Raiders, and numerous honoraries. Despite all this extra-curricular activity, the initiated members were able to produce the highest G .P.A . o f all fraternities on campus last fall. They also initiated a large number o f associate members. They were very happy to bring in these brothers and offer them the chance to share in the “Pi Kapp Experience”. They then proceeded to recruit several new associates for the spring semester and offer them their unique “no-pledging, no-hazing” atmosphere where everyone has a say and everyone shares the load. M otherhood also came to Pi Kappa Phi as their derelict cat G onzo had kittens this spring. Brother Dan is still trying to find the father. Maintaining solvency, they are pressing ahead with plans for renovation o f the house including, among others, plans for a new roof. They give special thanks to their present and future alumni for their support in this effort. The Greek W eek Carnival booth was a “smash”, car smash that is, and was very successful. Many brothers have graduated this past May and they will be missed. All in all it has been a very good year for Pi Kappa Phi and they look forward to ’8 1 -’82 with great anticipation.

There have been several renovations completed on the Sigma Pi house this year. The biggest and most noticeable change is their new front porch. To go along with the front porch they added a new steel door and new tiling in the front foyer. Also completed this year was the rewiring o f their kitchen. The newest addition to the house is a new stero receiver and two turntables donated by the 7 9 fall pledge class. In the near future they will obtain a much needed ice machine. They are en joying the benefits o f this year’s work and are looking forward to the same success next year.

This past year has been a very active one for TKE. Many different achievements have come their way. The areas o f campus leadership, community service, campus wide competition and intramural sports have been strong points. The Teke’s in campus involvement include presidents and vice-presidents in may key campus organizations. Campus and community service receive constant attention at TKE. Their projects include a chariot pull for Muscular Dystro phy, benefits for St. Judes Hospital, Theta Tau Ugly Man Charity, and a wide range o f service projects. In campus-wide competition TKE has been a consistent leader. They received many high awards in competitions ranging from the Greek Sing to the St. Pat’s games. Intramural sports are more than just an outlet from school work. Emphasis has been placed on full participation and win ning attitudes which explains the great competitiveness o f the Teke’s. While striving to uphold a good outward image, efforts have been made for internal development at TKE. House maintenance and im p rovem en ts, greater financial security, better chapter management and a closer brotherhood have been stressed as their fraternity membership climbs above

Theta X i Fraternity was founded as the first professional engineering fraternity in the United States on April 29, 1864. The Alpha Psi Chapter o f Theta Xi, here in Rolla, was founded on October 8, 1949. Presently, we are thirty-two members strong and are looking forward to a full house o f forty members in the fall o f 1981. They are a young house and maintain a close family atmosphere with plenty o f activities year ’round (including a water skiing trip this summer!). Since they are mostly sophomores and freshmen, they will become stronger in the coming years. Their little sisters, the Blue Irises, are eleven women strong and the will grow with Theta X i to become recognized on campus in the fall o f 1981. Theta X i is a social fraternity as well as an engineering fraternity and they take pride in the suc cess o f their all-campus parties as well as their private parties.

The 1980-81 school year proved to be an involved one for Zeta Tau Alpha. Ser vice projects, campus activities, intramu rals, studying and other activities took up much time for the members o f the Eta Theta chapter. Zetas hold offices in many organizations including Student Council, the Student Union Board, campus publications and numerous others. In other areas, such as Greek activities, Zeta took an active role, placing first in the musical division during the Greek Sing, and also won overall Greek W eek in the sorority division. In the area o f service, Zetas devoted many hours to their national philanthrop hy, th e A s s o c ia tio n fo r R eta rd ed Citizens. In recognition o f a fund raising event for A.R.C., the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce presented Zeta Tau Alpha with an award.

Who’s Who The following students were selected to appear in the 1981 edition of Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges. These Students were selected by a campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory on the basis of service to the community, academic achievement, leadership in extracurricular activities, and future potential.
Greg Grindinger “I dread success. To have succeeded is to have finished one’s business on earth, like the male spider who is killed by the female the moment he has succeeded in his courtship. I like a state of continual becoming, with a goal in front and not behind.’’ Bernard Shaw —
Marilyn Kolbet “The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well; and doing well whatever you do, without a thought of fame.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow —
V 324
Hal Tharp “Coming to college has opened my eyes to many things I do not know, but I feel better off because of it.”
Bonnie Boland “Those only are happy who have fair minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness; on the happiness of others, some improvement of mankind, even on some art or pursuit, followed not as means, but as itself an ideal end. Aiming thus at something else, they fin d happiness by the way.” John Stuart Mills —
325
Mark Nealon “Love is not so simple and malleable as many suppose. Put it in prison and it dies. Restrict it and it turns into hate. Force it and it disappears. You cannot will love, nor even control it. You can only guide its expression. It comes and goes according to those qualities in life that invite it or deny its presence.”
Rosemary Emhoff “You see things as they are and ask ‘W hy?’ But 1 dream things that never were and ask W hy not?”’ George Bernard Shaw —
V 326

Michael W. Bennett “My feelings about UMR have changed drastically over the past few years: Freshman: detested it Sophomore: indifferent Junior: liked it Senior: loved it Present: wish I was back Enjoy all the good things UMR has to offer; a great education, fantastic friends, fun times, drunken stupors, football championships, ect. For when it is all over, you have to work the rest of your life!”
Paul Baldetti “Be true.” To my brothers in phi phi kappa alpha, PGB.

The Rollamo staff would also like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding achievements, whose pictures were unavailable. David Frankenbach: Before you let yourself go completely be sure you can get your self back. The best things in life may be free, but things money can buy aren’t bad either. We are about as happy as we make up our minds to be. You may be able to take time off, but you can never put it back. A person is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.

Fellow students and faculty, I would like to dedicate the ROLLAMO 1981 to Lance Williams, advisor to the yearbook staff. Without his assistance and enthusiasm the job as Editor-in-Chief would have been impossible. Lance Williams has been the Rollamo’s advisor for more than ten years and the yearbook staff hopes he will continue with us for a long time to come. Special thanks goes to Tom Beard, for without his help in getting me involved in the yearbook. Credit goes to Patty Slattery and Mike Nix for their efforts in the Activities and Sports sections. I would like to express special appreciation to Rose Emhoff, Lori Troester, and Karen Gehlert who all turned their sections in early. Making my job much easier. Also to Caroline Sturm goes special thanks for her layout of the Living Units section. The following people have spent the last year working as assistant editors on the yearbook staff, Jim Engemann, Diane Schaefer, John Tripi, Kay Runge, and Kathy Buhr. I hope they will continue to work for the Rollamo Yearbook and not let their talents and experience go to waste. Congratulations go to Tony Park for being this years top photographer. Thank you for your dedication and putting up with my last minute requests. I would like to thank the rest of the photography staff, especially Dan Booher (photography editor), without your hard work and organiza tion, the Rollamo would have been nothing but words. To my fraters at Tau Kappa Epsilon I owe many thanks for making my college career at UMR very enjoyable. Above all else, I would like to thank my parents and family for all their help and support through the past four years. I hope you will find part of yourself within these pages of the Rollamo 1981 and that it will bring back good memories. James W. Lynch, Jr. Editor-in-Chief, Rollamo 1981
