From the Chair Dear alumni, students, friends and supporters, As we begin the 2026-27 academic year, I am once again reminded of the remarkable accomplishments, experiences and contributions of our students and alumni. This issue of Common Ground highlights the many ways our department continues to make an impact both on campus and beyond.

Throughout these pages, alumni and students share their perspectives and experiences, reflecting the strength of our department and the lasting connections that unite our Miner family (pages 4-9). You'll also read about the activities of our Miner Bears in Springfield (pages 12-13), the success of our summer camps (pages 14-17), and the outstanding achievements of our student design teams (pages 18-21).

I encourage you to take a few minutes to explore the work of organizations and teams such as Concrete Canoe and Engineers Without Borders. These hands-on experiences are an essential part of preparing our students to become leaders in their profession and proud Miner alumni.

I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to our alumni, friends and industry partners who continue to champion our students and support departmental initiatives. Once again, the CArEE Department set a high standard through Miner Phonathon participation and support of the Bayless Professorship Initiative. Your generosity helps sustain the programs and opportunities that enrich our students’ education and professional development.

2026 attendees of the Future Women in Kiewit Summit

Igniting career paths Bao Le, EnvE’26, attended the Future Women in Kiewit (FWIK) Summit last fall, where she joined students from across the U.S. and Canada for two days of discussions focused on leadership, professional growth and careers in environmental engineering and construction.

Le, a recent graduate, now serves as an equipment coordinator with the Alliance Source Testing (AST) division of Alliance Technical Group.

In her new role, she manages, calibrates and troubleshoots instrumentation used in nationwide stack testing and air compliance projects while supporting safety and environmental compliance initiatives.

While at Missouri S&T, Le was recognized as a Kummer Vanguard Scholar, earned Dean’s List honors, and was vice president of the Sustainable Engineering Design Team.

Q&A Christy Johnson Environmental engineering student shares her experiences at S&T ✽ What do you find most exciting about environmental engineering?

I appreciate how I can feel like I’m making a difference in public health as an engineer. It’s also a space where lots of innovation is involved and celebrated, which makes it exciting and inspiring.

✽ What undergraduate research have you conducted while at S&T? I worked in Dr. Hunter Schroer’s lab as a Dean’s Undergraduate Research Scholar, focusing on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) degradation.

We were trying to figure out how to biodegrade those compounds under realistic conditions. They are known more commonly as “forever chemicals,” so it’s cool to work on a project that can help protect public health.

✽ Can you describe your internship experiences and what you learned?

Both of my internships came from the career fair — so current students, make sure you go! After my first year at S&T, I completed an internship with the USDA in Hannibal, Missouri. I did lots of field work like surveying and site inspections and shadowed some design work on terraces and bank stabilization. It was agriculture-focused, and it was awesome to see that part of engineering.

The following summer, I had an internship with Rocksmith Geoengineering in Maryland Heights, Missouri. I did lots of groundwater sampling in the field, data evaluation and reporting. It was a great experience.

✽ What kept you busy at S&T? I was the outgoing president of Chi Omega and the fundraising chair for Chi Epsilon. I was also involved with the Society of Women Engineers, the Leadership and Innovation for Futures in Engineering (LIFE) Program, Tau Beta Pi and Kummer Vanguard Scholars. I also conducted research and was a grader for fluid mechanics.

✽ How do you think your experiences at S&T will translate to your success once you enter the job market?

I’ve had some great mentors in my department and peers who have inspired me to become involved. I’ve also had a successful academic history thanks to lots of office hour visits and group study sessions. I have noticed this is quite an attractive combination to employers. Something else that I’ve picked up from my experiences on campus is the ability to make strong connections.

✽ What’s next for you after finishing your bachelor’s degree?

Starting as a full-time environmental engineer with Rocksmith Geoengineering.

Next fall, I will start taking distance education classes part-time with S&T toward my master’s degree in environmental engineering.

✽ What advice do you have for other students?

Just try it out! Environmental engineering is so rewarding. It’s like working on a puzzle every day, and when you do it right, you can make the world a safer and healthier place. I would recommend talking with faculty, upperclassmen, peers and alumni to figure out if a certain sector resonates with you.

Q&A

Malachi Rein What do you do as director of the Building Energy Exchange St. Louis?

Buildings serve both as infrastructure and inspiration, home and community.

They’re also technically complex, facing evolving challenges, and getting worse over time. Stakeholders have a wide variety of backgrounds, many without technical expertise. When the stakes are as high as they are with buildings, and the potential outcomes for doing things well are so amazing, we need to bridge the technical and the behavioral conversations to get projects moving.

Most of my work is living at those intersections to support good decisionmaking regardless of where you’re coming from or what your needs are.

This often involves collaborating with stakeholders such as utility providers; municipalities; those who design, construct and operate buildings; and the decision makers and users of the built environment. There are opportunities in every building for better performance, and there are timelines for which this makes sense. Connecting ideas, technological advances and partners through resourcing, technical expertise and capacity building is a vital component of asking stakeholders with varying knowledge to make a change or an investment.

How did your time as an S&T student shape the way you think about buildings, communities and your career path?

While I was at Missouri S&T, I explored a lot of the history of the campus and the community. The buildings are at the intersection of that — both as a backdrop and as a participant with endless options for inspiring engineers and projects. Working with Dr. Stuart Baur and S&T facilities folks, along with doing research at the library and experiencing the current use of the buildings, I was able to contextualize their value in a more humanistic way than coursework alone allowed.

How do you describe your research in environmental restoration and critical minerals, and why is it important?

My research focuses on restoring mine-impacted lands by rebuilding soil function through revegetation. Many legacy tailings sites remain barren and can release metals through erosion and windblown dust, posing long-term environmental risks. At Missouri S&T, I study plant-based approaches and targeted amendment strategies that help reduce metal exposure risk, support sustainable vegetation and promote ecosystem recovery. The goal is to support more sustainable resource use, which is an issue that’s relevant in southeast Missouri and in mining regions across the U.S. and globally.

What are your goals for the future?

My long-term goal is to lead research that integrates biogeochemistry, ecological restoration and sustainable materials management. I’m especially interested in bridging lab-scale mechanisms with field-scale implementation by developing field-validated strategies to restore soil function at legacy mine sites, with clear performance metrics to guide reclamation decisions.

I also plan to expand work on environmentally responsible critical-mineral recovery from legacy mine waste, including effective reclamation pathways for residual tailings. I ultimately aim to build interdisciplinary collaborations across academia, industry and federal partners while mentoring students and helping prepare the next generation of engineers and scientists in phytotechnology-based restoration, sustainable materials and critical-mineral recovery, and emerging contaminant mitigation.

Shaping the next generation Dr. Radwa Eissa, CE PhD’25, is helping shape the next generation of engineers as an assistant professor of civil engineering at Clemson University in South Carolina. Since she began graduate school, she knew academia was the right path for her.

“I did work in the industry for two years after I finished undergrad, but I wanted to explore research more,” Eissa says. “And being a graduate student introduced me to the teaching element of it, and I really enjoyed that.”

Eissa says a career in academia allowed her to stay connected to the construction industry while pursuing research and teaching.

“Working in academia, especially in civil engineering and construction management, I was still tied to the industry,” she says. “I’m still exploring how projects perform in practice, which keeps the research meaningful and relevant.”

In the future, she hopes to expand her research while continuing to teach and mentor students. She also plans to get more involved in organizations like the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Radwa Eissa

When asked what advice she would give new students, Eissa says the most important thing is to stay involved.

“As a Ph.D. student, there’s often more flexibility in how involved you are outside your research,” she says. “But as part of the Kummer I&E Doctoral Fellows program, it’s important to take advantage of the resources available.

Attend the meetings, go to the guest speakers and participate in volunteer opportunities, because you never know what doors those experiences might open.”

Cornelius Weaver

Architectural engineering graduate shares career journey As part of Engineering Week, Cornelius Weaver, ArchE’07, founder and chief capital officer of Lola Capital Group, discussed how his degree in architectural engineering helped shape a career spanning construction management, higher education facilities leadership and real estate fund management.

During his presentation, “Make an Impact in Your Career: Your Degree Is a Tool, Not a Box,” Weaver highlighted the diverse career paths available to architectural engineering graduates.

He shared insights from managing more than $1 billion in capital development projects at institutions including Saint Louis University, Howard University, Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University.

Today, Weaver leads a multi-million-dollar investment fund focused on neighborhood revitalization and community-centered real estate development.

Weaver has more than 15 years of experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects across highly regulated environments. His background includes overseeing budgets, timelines, consultants and delivery teams — building a disciplined approach to execution, risk management and accountability.

Chi Epsilon earns four awards Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society, held its national conference virtually this spring, and Missouri S&T earned recognition in each of the organization’s award categories.

The honors included the Outstanding Chapter Award, Faculty Advisor Award, Pillars in Practice Award and the James and Sharon Weinel Fellowship.

“To receive four Chi Epsilon awards, with no other university earning more than two, shows how our students and chapter continue to be among the very best in the nation,” says Dr. Joel G. Burken, a Curators’ Distinguished Professor and S&T’s Mathes Endowed Chair of environmental engineering. “Our students always work hard and represent Missouri S&T exceptionally well on the national stage.”

Founded in 1922, Chi Epsilon includes 149 university chapters and supports highachieving students in civil engineering and closely related disciplines, including environmental, architectural and construction engineering.

S&T’s chapter was one of three chapters to receive the Outstanding Chapter Award, recognizing excellence in leadership, member engagement and service.

Burken was one of two recipients of the Faculty Advisor Award. His nomination, submitted by S&T’s chapter, cited his efforts as a role model, advocate and source of encouragement for students.

Emma Eberhart, a senior in civil engineering from St. Louis and S&T’s 2025-26 chapter president, was one of five recipients of the Pillars in Practice Award, honoring undergraduate students whose achievements reflect the organization’s four pillars of scholarship, character, practicality and sociability.

Mohammad Afsharmovahed, a Ph.D. student in civil engineering and Kummer Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellow from Iran, was one of two students honored with the James and Sharon Weinel Fellowship award for graduate students for his AI-driven infrastructure research, academic achievements and service.

Students earn third place at ASCE Kansas Conference Students from Missouri S&T earned third place in the student poster competition at the 2026 ASCE Kansas Conference, held at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus.

The conference brought together students, researchers and industry professionals in geotechnical engineering to share research, exchange ideas and explore advancements in the field.

During the poster session, Ph.D. candidates from the CArEE Department, advised by Dr. Xiong Zhang, presented their research. Yabei Zhang earned third place for her outstanding poster presentation.

In addition to showcasing their work, the students had the opportunity to connect with renowned geotechnical engineer Dr. Carlos Santamarina, presenter of the prestigious Terzaghi Lecture.

The conference provided valuable opportunities for students to share their research, network with professionals and gain insight into the latest developments in geotechnical engineering.

Missouri State engineering students shine at regional ASCE Competition Missouri State University engineering students earned top honors at the 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers Region 7 Mid-America Symposium, bringing home three awards while competing against teams from 17 universities.

The annual event, co-hosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, took place in April. The symposium challenges civil engineering students to apply what they learn in the classroom through hands-on competitions that test technical skills, teamwork, communication and problem-solving.

Despite facing unexpected obstacles leading up to the competition, Missouri State students rose to the challenge. The student chapter had to scale back its participation in the Steel Bridge competition, and organizers canceled the Timber-Strong event that students had spent months preparing for.

According to Dr. Sanjay Tewari, associate teaching professor and faculty advisor for the chapter, the students demonstrated resilience and adaptability throughout the event, ultimately achieving impressive results on the regional stage.

INTERNSHIP HIGHLIGHT

Teresa Nagle Civil Engineering junior Teresa Nagle gained hands-on experience as an intern with GBA, a consulting firm that delivers integrated solutions for architectural and engineering design and construction services, where she contributed to bridge design projects and participated in site visits that brought classroom concepts to life.

Miner Bears clean up Jordan Creek Missouri State ASCE student officers, members and faculty advisors joined students from the MSU Art and Design Department and Engineering to help clean a section of Jordan Creek in downtown Springfield on Nov. 8, 2025. Held twice each year, the cleanup is one of the chapter’s many efforts to give back to the community while helping reduce pollution and protect local waterways.

DESIGN TEAMS

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) EWB traveled to all four partner countries in 2025, so most of the work in 2026 was completed remotely.

EWB

In Kenya, the team hired professionals to conduct land surveys and collect soil samples. They also completed a borehole at the planned site for a new water system.

In Ecuador, the team finished the first phase of a project to improve the community’s water system, bringing them one step closer to better access to clean water.

In Guatemala, construction of the new school is complete. The team is now in the final stages of monitoring erosion control measures around the site.

In Bolivia, there are fewer updates this year because the local municipality has taken over the project. However, this creates an exciting opportunity for our chapter to begin partnering with a new community, so stay tuned for more news next year!

1970s Gary Forsee, CE’72, was recently selected to serve on the Kummer Missouri S&T Foundation Board.

Ron Reed, CE’76, MS EMgt’77, “After graduation I moved to California and got into construction, environmental and eventually project management.

Work required a lot of moving, so besides California I lived in Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Texas, Scotland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Netherlands and India.

Loved every minute of it. Luckily, I had a wife who was always ready for an adventure and was willing to put up with all the moves. Unfortunately, she passed away 5 years ago from cancer.

I have two sons, one in Denver, the other has the same travel bug I had, and he works remotely from various parts of the world (now in Colombia). I’ve been retired for five years and living in Pismo Beach, California.”

1980s Aruna Miller, CE’89, was recently the opening keynote speaker at the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Power and Purpose: Inaugural Women’s Leadership Exchange.’

1990s Kevin Alexander, CE’94, was recently appointed as the general manager for the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA/Agency).

Tom Dancey, CE’95, was recently named assistant director over operations of Springfield Public Works. Dancey has held various roles in the department, including principal engineer over transportation management and general services.

Jim Knutelski, CE’91, MS CE’02, recently celebrated 25 years of service at Hanson

Professional Services Inc. He is currently working there as a senior geotechnical engineer.

2000s Michael Lubiewski, CE’03, MS CE’06, was recently named as a principal at St. Louis-based Alper Audi.

Michael Murphy, CE’06, MS CE’09, PhD CE’10, was recently hired as a senior leader for the Simpson Gumpertz & Heger’s structural engineering group.

Sondra Rotty, ArchE’04, MS EMgt’08, was recently promoted to president of Tarlton, one of St. Louis’ largest general contracting and construction management firms. In this new role, she also will retain her current position as chief operating officer.

Kensey Russell, CE’03, was recently installed as an ASCE Society Director from Region 6 (Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas, and Mexico).

2010s Kevin Hampe, CE’11, was recently promoted to water distribution executive for the City of St. Louis Water Division.

Aaron Kilgore, CE’12, was recently promoted to senior associate with Apex Engineers, Inc. Nichole VonderHaar, ArchE’15, was recently promoted to project director at S.M. Wilson & Co. She previously served as a senior project manager.

Yates receives American Chemical Society Award Jane Yates, a senior in environmental engineering, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Undergraduate Student Award in Environmental Chemistry from the American Chemical Society.

This honor recognizes her outstanding achievements and contributions to undergraduate research in the field of environmental chemistry.

Kawde selected for Kummer fellowship Mohamed Kawde, a Ph.D. candidate in civil engineering, has been selected to receive a Kummer I&E Doctoral Fellowship beginning fall 2026.

Mohamed conducts his research under the guidance of Dr. Mohamed ElGawady, professor and Alard and Sheri Kaplan Faculty Scholar. This prestigious fellowship recognizes his academic excellence and research potential as he advances innovation and entrepreneurship through his doctoral studies.

The competition challenges graduate students to present their research and its impact in just three minutes, helping them develop and showcase strong research communication skills. Recognized globally, 3MT competitions are held at more than 900 universities across 85 countries.
