Prof. Julius “In third grade, my brother introduced me to crossword construction, which began my lifetime fascination with words. In college, I founded Collegiate Crossword, a company that supplied weekly crosswords to hundreds of college newspapers. That led to a New York Times article about my business, which led to a six-book contract with Bantam Books, which paid for my graduate studies.”

Celia “I also found out that we’re both really interested in piano, and you have a huge collection.”

Prof. Julius “I have no idea how I wound up with a baby grand, two player pianos, and a spinet. I think it’s remarkable that you are proficient at four musical instruments, one of which I’d never even heard of—the guqin!”

ACADEMICS WHEN CINDY AND SHANNON STARTED PLANNING THEIR SEMESTER ABROAD, THEY WERE FIRST CONSIDERING PROGRAMS IN EUROPE. THEIR PLANS CHANGED AFTER TALKING WITH FRIENDS AND LEARNING ABOUT THE MANY PROGRAM OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THEM AS CAL LUTHERAN STUDENTS.

Getting Out of Their Comfort Zone Since “Hong Kong is a place where East meets West,” Cindy said she realized a semester at HKBU could be the perfect mix of the familiar and unfamiliar. She also had the opportunity to add to her Women’s Studies minor and expand her horizons in a course entitled “Language and Gender.”

Her classmates and professor collectively shared views from countries such as Japan, France, China, and Hong Kong, which made for interesting discussions and a more global view of the topic.

Their study abroad experience allowed them to meet people from around the globe and pushed them to try new things— including the food! By the end of their semester in Hong Kong, Cindy and Shannon had made lifelong friends, gained new perspectives in their studies, and ultimately became more independent. It was the experience of a lifetime.

Hong Kong doesn’t have a single culture. It’s more of an international port like L.A. I made friends with people from Hong Kong, but I also had a chance to make friends with people from all over the world who had an entirely different perspective to offer.

Research highlight? My fellowship exposed me to new techniques that represent modern breakthroughs in the field of genetics. Being part of a world-renowned lab showed me how exciting creating new knowledge is!

Something you learned from your mentors? I learned not to be content and instead to strive for more. Feeling uncomfortable means that one is stepping outside the box. The world contains so much information that hasn’t been discovered, and as a scientist, my responsibility is to create more knowledge.

Did your fellowship challenge you?

Passionate about? I love learning from and helping other people, and I’m striving to combine these passions with a career in medicine.

Your research? It is my hope to provide more useful and potent pharmaceuticals by working to facilitate easier generation of medium-ring azacycles, which are the “engines” of bigger, more elaborate compounds with pharmaceutical functions.

Research highlights? I had to fail a few

times and learn what wasn’t working so that I could figure out what would work. Perseverance, efficiency, and tenacity were key! I spent 15-hour days in the lab doing chemical reactions because I was so excited for the downstream impacts of my project!

Dominic Lunde, Junior Physics Major Darling Summer Research Fellowship for Applied Scientific Computing

Passionate about? Solving problems.

Passionate about? Ways we can protect our environment. Growing up, I saw the effects of pesticides on farm workers. I watched pesticide runoff lead to major algae blooms that suffocate wildlife.

Did your fellowship affect your career goal? I never expected to love research so much! I love its challenges and the intricacies of trying to solve complex problems. I want to continue research throughout my medical career.

Your research? I investigated ways to diminish the effects of pesticides in Ventura County. I ran a chemical analysis of farm workers’ urine samples, identifying 508 pesticides and pesticide metabolites. I did a statistical examination of the pesticides and reviewed legislation regulating pesticide use in California.

CAL LUTHERAN FELLOWSHIP WINNER

Your research? I created superconductors (super-cold metals exhibiting zero electrical resistance) on the computer and tried to make them model real-life experiments at the atomic level.

Research highlights? I created a problem-solving method in my code.

It took 10,000 iterations, but it ran pretty fast. Then, Dr. Deisz showed us how to do it in three to four iterations.

After running his more advanced code for 30 days straight, I got really interesting results in superconducting stripes.

Policy recommendations? 1. Create an informed dialogue through increased education for communities exposed to pesticides. 2. Improve regulations that lessen dangerous exposure. 3. Ensure that farms are compliant with improved regulations via oversight measures.

Research highlight? Having the opportunity to look at pesticide use from a scientific and public policy stance and propose solutions to the issues at hand.

Whether it’s physics or coding related, or a problem in my workplace, it has always been my goal to fix it.

I thought I didn’t want to be a programmer because I couldn’t sit in front of a computer all day. Well, I can! I can’t wait to get back to try a new solution. I now know I want a job with a lot of problem solving—and a standing desk!

How did you get your position with the San Diego Padres? I was able to work seasonally with the L.A. Sparks, Oakland Raiders, and L.A. Angels of Anaheim. So with my experience working with four professional teams and the help of my mentors, I secured the Padres job.

What do you love about your program? The location! New York is an amazing city. I love living here. Also, New York is the publishing capital of the world, so NYU was always a dream school for me because of what it offers culturally and professionally. And my professors are professionals in the publishing world!

Ideal first job after NYU? I would love to work for a small imprint for trade paperbacks, Condé Nast, or for my favorite magazine, The New Yorker.

The Disneyland Get-Away was really great.

It gave me a chance to do something I wouldn’t normally have done. I’m so grateful that Cal Lutheran offers these opportunities.

The Regals have made a tradition of winning. The team reached the grand prize on November 20, winning the NCAA Division III National Championship.

It’s amazing. They didn’t event think we would make it to the NCAA tournament. But we fought all the adversity, did the work, and believed.

FALL SPORTS WRAP Regals Soccer advanced to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Final, but fell to Pomona-Pitzer after a string of five straight SCIAC championships.

Kingsmen Golf began their season, which concludes in the spring, playing two tournaments and placing fourth in both. At the SCIAC tournament last spring, one Kingsman tied for second in the nation among freshmen.

Regals Volleyball team member Allie Eason was named the NCAA Division III Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Other Regals named to the All-Tournament team included Michelle Lawrence and Nicki Tetherow.

Kingsmen Football team member Dalton Santos (linebacker) was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. Seven Kingsmen made All-SCIAC teams.

IN AND AROUND THOUSAND OAKS, HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS ABOUND! SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS, TOPANGA STATE PARK, LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST, WILDWOOD REGIONAL PARK, PARADISE FALLS, CONEJO CREEK—THEY ALL INVITE CAL LUTHERAN STUDENTS TO HIT THE TRAIL.

Favorite Hiking Trail: Sandstone Peak Andy Queen, Junior Evergreen, CO Double Major: Environmental Science and Political Science

“Sandstone Peak. It’s about a 6-mile loop with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain.

The loop offers the perfect length and difficulty for a nice time spent outside while still feeling a sense of accomplishment.

The peak itself offers spectacular views of the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains and ocean. All around the trail there is so much to do such as rock climbing, biking, sight seeing, or even having a picnic. It is the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains and being at the top during sunset is quite the experience! On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Channel Islands.”

Favorite stop along the trail?

“An overlook about a mile from the summit called Inspiration Point. It offers a preview of the views from the top with some big cliffs—perfect to gaze at!”

Favorite Hiking Trail: Mt. Clef Rachel Lapp, Sophomore Santa Cruz, CA Double Major: Environmental Science and Global Studies

“Close to campus on the Mt. Clef hillside.

It is at just the right place to watch the sun set and the moon rise. I bike over and hike up the trail with my bike. I sit on a rock, breathe for a while, and then write or draw.

It’s very close to the town, but a combination of the elevation change and the dark make me feel like I’m far away in a different place.

A kind of wild squash grows there during the fall on the rough igneous rock formation, and it’s always nice to see that things still grow even in the roughest of places.”

Favorite spot?

“The rock at the highest point. I feel exposed and somewhat vulnerable. It’s a nice reminder of how important it is to be humble.”

“Lang Ranch is a biking area up the road from my house that has heaps of sick biking and hiking trails. The whole area is super pretty, especially when the rains come and everything goes green. And, if you’re brave enough to charge up the bigger hills, you get full-on views of all of Simi Valley or Thousand Oaks! There are a bunch of different trail styles, everything from steep single tracks to wide and mellow trails.”

Favorite stop along the trail?

“On the Chumash Museum trail, I like to post up in the shade by the teepees. It’s cool to think about the Chumash people, who lived here long before we did, and imagine how they used to cruise in the same zones.”
