Through this program, she was able to take classes toward her MBA during her senior year and will complete her MBA in Financial Planning one year after receiving her undergraduate degree.

Core-21 classes teach you to think analytically and critically, expose you to varied perspectives, help your understand your role as an heir and creator of history, and teach you to solve new problems by integrating information with moral reflection.

“ Out of my undergraduate classes, I think Strategic Management is my favorite, because it challenges me and intertwines all of the information I’ve learned throughout my Business major.

Once I got to experience his ‘non-professor’ personality, I found that he’s not intimidating; he’s truly outgoing and relatable.”

Daniel “I first met Dr. Gill when I crashed his Intro to Christianity class.

My first thought: ‘Why is a Sikh, wearing a turban, teaching a Christianity course?’ I quickly found out that he’s very well-versed in Christian Theology.”

Prof. Gill “I thought that you, like most of my students, would have had enough after one semester of the “Gill-atine,” but you came back for more!”

Daniel “Honestly, your Study of Global Religions class rocked my boat a little, because you exposed us to so many different religions and their take on the world.”

Prof. Gill “It was just an awesome experience having your young-but-wise voice in class discussions. You and I are both allies of the interfaith cooperation movement on campus... We’re very different people, but we both know that we’re better together.”

Prof. Gagliardo “Carlos, it’s so easy to be passionate about mathematics; it’s such a beautiful and powerful subject! I could lecture about how amazing it is, but I prefer to teach through exploration and first-hand interaction.”

What have you learned from working on The Echo that you will carry into your professional life?

“How to be a leader and how to react under pressure. I’ve learned that accuracy and quality is important in any work that you do, especially when you’re telling other people’s stories. I believe that the challenges I face at The Echo are preparing me for the challenges I’ll face in the future.”

What positions have you held?

Which was your favorite and why?

“In fall 2013, I started as a writer for The Echo, and in fall 2014 I became Editor-in-Chief.

As Editor-in-Chief, I have the chance to collaborate with great writers, photojournalists, and editors. I’m also more involved with the process of putting the paper together.”

What are your career plans?

“I plan to pursue a career in entertainment broadcast journalism and produce or be on-camera for a show like Access Hollywood or E! News.”

Michael Foster Madrid, Spain Michael, a Biology major, came to Cal Lutheran knowing he wanted to study abroad. So, he worked with his faculty advisor to plan classes that kept him on track for graduation and to complete a minor in Spanish. In fall 2014, Michael fulfilled his dream when he spent a semester in Madrid, Spain, with a partner program, International Studies Abroad. He lived with a host family, participated in clubs with local students, and took classes in Spanish. Michael is planning to attend medical school.

I can proudly say that studying abroad has made me a more independent person who is more aware of the differences in cultures that make foreign countries so spectacular.

MICHAEL FOSTER, Junior Santa Clarita, CA / Biology Major / Spanish Minor

Kimberlee Jensen Semester at Sea Kimberlee was studying Biochemistry when she made the decision to travel the world in spring 2014 with Semester at Sea, a Cal Lutheran partner program. While at sea, she took courses that satisfied graduation requirements and gave her an international perspective. In one such course, “Infectious Disease in Humans,” she learned about HIV/AIDS issues and participated in a field lab in Cape Town, South Africa, where she met with members of an HIV-focused non-governmental organization at Tygerberg Hospital. Kimberlee’s experience opened her eyes to the field of epidemiology—she wants to be involved with the prevention of infectious disease in developing countries in her future career.

At 9:50 a.m. on November 3, 1990, President George H.W. Bush spoke at a gathering in Kingsmen Park.

THE 3.4 ACRE KINGSMEN PARK IS A FAVORITE STUDENT SPOT, PERFECT FOR QUIET CREEK-SIDE STUDYING AND RELAXING.

In 1997, the annual Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival began in the Park with a three-weekend run of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Student events, such as outdoor movies, concerts, festival, and fitness challenges— like inflatable obstacle courses, Zorb Ball races, and archery wars— are hosted in the park each year.

SWIMMING POOLS, SAND VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL COURTS, HIKING AND BARBECUE AREAS ARE JUST STEPS AWAY.

Basketball and Volleyball Courts The basketball and volleyball courts are lit until 10:00 p.m. and friendly games of Horse or Spike Ball are often being played well into the night. The first-year halls, Mt. Clef, Pederson, and Thompson, have their own recreational area with basketball and sand volleyball courts.

Living in a residence hall is such a great experience.

Friends can go right outside and play a pick-up game of basketball or volleyball.

During the weekends, students are out there all day, either sunbathing or sometimes having barbecues together.

When I gave my internship coordinator the résumé that I created after the workshop, she was very impressed and told me it was one of the most well-done résumés she’d seen in a while.

Now, when I submit my résumé, I can do it with confidence.

Workshop Attended Marketing U: How to Create an Epic Résumé Workshop Overview Learn how to translate skills gained through part-time jobs and internships into a résumé that gets noticed.

Workshop Overview Learn how to conduct salary research, give an employer a salary range, and discuss alternate forms of compensation.

Workshop attendees role-play different scenarios in small groups, putting the lessons into practice until they feel comfortable.

Negotiating salary is an important skill in terms of setting yourself up with post-undergrad jobs. I may go to this workshop again in the future to reinforce and refresh my knowledge. I left the workshop with skills to utilize when I start looking for full-time jobs. In terms of countering offers made by interviewers, I got some quality responses that I will consider using in the future.

COLORFUL & CULTURAL CAMPUS EVENTS The Cal Lutheran student body loves this event. It builds community! Of course, the winner has no obligations; this event is for fun­—Mr. Kingsman wins the honor of winning!

LAUREL SKINNER, Senior Portland, OR / Communication Major

Color Dash: One Hue-Mongous 5K February 28, 2015 This notoriously messy event has become one of the university’s favorite spring traditions. Runners gather in Kingsmen Park on a fresh February morning for a motivational speech and a 5,000-meter course that takes them past a series of “dasher-splashers” who cover them in clouds of pink, green, purple, and blue paint. After everyone’s crossed the finish line, the runners themselves gather together to powder their noses—and everything else—by tossing bags of color high into the air.

This year we had about 136 runners and 42 volunteers in Color Dash.

It’s affordable for students and they don’t have to travel far to get a workout—with a paint war at the end.

In 2015, 300 pounds of powder paint were tossed.

The Mr. Kingsman pageant is a long-standing tradition in which 10 men—nominated by their peers—compete for the crown during a raucous, fun-filled evening. The pageant begins with the introduction of the candidates and proceeds through a series of competitions: talent, swimsuit, interview, etc. After each round, audience members cast their votes. At the end of the evening, the winner of the annual Mr. Kingsman Pageant is announced!

Senior Nolan Monsibay, a music major from Burbank, CA, was crowned Mr. Kingsman 2015.

STUDENT LIFE

A lu’au is more of a family/ friendly get-together. The focus is not on the event itself, but rather the relationships that the event brings together. We utilize food, and music—among other things in Hawai’i to strengthen relationships and bonds.

About 200 pounds of barbecue chicken are consumed during the Lu’au.

Cal LuPalooza: Music Reigns in April April 10, 2015 Kingsmen Park echoed with the sounds of the 2nd annual Cal LuPalooza Music Festival thanks to the organizational efforts of students in the Music Industry Management class. The free Friday night festival showcased the musical talents of 16 solo performers and five bands—all students at Cal Lutheran majoring in Music Production. They represented a wide range of styles, including original compositions, pop, alternative, indie rock, rap, hip-hop and electronic dance music. And events of the evening included a raffle for a guitar signed by Imagine Dragons!

One Big, Happy ‘Ohana April 9, 2015 In Hawaiian culture, ‘ohana means family—whether by birth or by choice. In April, more than 400 students came together for a lu’au to celebrate Cal Lutheran’s ‘ohana. Organized by the Hawaiian Club, the evening embraced the Hawaiian culture and spirit through food, dance, music, and other island traditions. Entertainment included popular Hawaiian singer/songwriter Justin Young along with up-andcoming musician—and Cal Lutheran graduate—Kirby Ai.

Cal LuPalooza is organized—start to finish—in just 10 weeks.

Cal LuPalooza provides the opportunity to experience only what performing in front of such an ecstatic crowd can offer.

The vibe is unmatched. It’s some of your best friends cheering you on, doing what you love doing most.

ATHLETICS

Success Highlights Swimming and Diving 2015 • Senior Kingsman Ryan Brem, a four-time All-SCIAC recipient, competed at the NCAA Division III Diving Regionals for his second straight year.

• On January 17, 2015, the Cal Lutheran men’s Swimming and Diving team defeated Redlands for the first time in the program’s history.

• 16 school records were broken at the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships.

• Six Kingsmen earned All-SCIAC honors.

Water Polo Honors • 56 Regals and Kingsmen have been selected to the All-American Water Polo Team since 2006.

As a team, we broke 17 of 22 swimming and diving records. This was one of the best years in the program’s history, with our best dual meet record and one of the highest finishes at SCIAC conferences. I was lucky enough to be a part of it and was glad I could contribute, cheer my teammates on, and push them each day.

SPORTS WRAP More than 250 Cal Lutheran student-athletes competed on 13 teams during the Winter and Spring seasons. Some outstanding team and individual performances highlighted the seasons.

Regals Softball finished fourth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings and qualified for the SCAIC Postseason Tournament for the first time in program history.

Kingsmen Baseball won its third straight SCIAC title and played in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the third straight season.

Daily lap swim hours, intramural sports opportunities, and Club Lu activities have students diving into the pool year round. All Cal Lutheran students are encouraged to enjoy the Samuelson Aquatics Center facilities.

Regals Track & Field In the Javelin, Allie Hadley set a SCIAC Championship Meet record, the SCIAC record, and stretched her own school record. Melissa Skiba was a two-time SCIAC champion in 2015, winning the 5K and 1,500m and was selected as both the SCIAC Women’s Athlete of the Year and as the Jennifer Stary Character Awards recipient.

Samuelson Aquatics Center is a state-of-the-art pool and one of my favorite pools to train in and compete in. I’m very fortunate to be able to call it my ‘home’ pool.

Kingsmen Tennis Moises Cardenas was selected to compete at the NCAA Division III National Tournament, representing Cal Lutheran for the second straight season on the national level.

THE GARDEN BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN MANY WAYS CAL LUTHERAN STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF WORK, SHARE, AND LEARN SIDE BY SIDE IN THE SEED (SUSTAINABLE EDIBLE EDUCATION) PROJECT COMMUNITY GARDEN. STUDENT VOLUNTEERS GROW FOOD, LEARN ABOUT GARDENING, AND MAKE SUSTAINABILITY A PART OF THEIR EVERYDAY LIFE. IT’S AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING LAB WITH AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM AND A SMALL APIARY (BEE YARD), A WORM COMPOSTING AREA, A GREENHOUSE FOR STARTING SEEDS, AND LOTS OF NATIVE PLANTING TO ATTRACT DIVERSE POLLINATORS. HERE, THE CAL LUTHERAN COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER TO HAVE FUN AND ADDRESS ISSUES OF ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS, PONDER HOW HUMANS RELATE TO NATURE, AND EXPLORE WHAT IT MEANS TO “LIVE WELL.”

Hoping for Rain

The SEEd garden brings people together to share the experience of planting, feeding, weeding, and harvesting the crop. It doesn’t take long before a shared task becomes a source of shared joy and satisfaction.

Through the common experience, student and faculty volunteers grow food and friendships.

About once a month, volunteers harvest 20 to 30 pounds of vegetables to sell at the Farm Stand on campus. Proceeds from the sale are used to buy more seeds and supplies to keep the garden growing.

Unsold vegetables are donated to a local food bank or, in some cases, composted to fertilize the up-and-coming crop.

In February, Cal Lutheran’s Religion Department and the SEEd Project co-sponsored “Hoping for Rain: An Interfaith Day of Study and Service.” The event was organized by Campus Ministry in the midst of California’s worst drought on record and brought together people of different faiths for an open dialogue about religious views and responses to drought. Sikh, Islamic, Christian, and Jewish perspectives were all presented, after which the diverse community came together to work in the Community Garden.

STUDENT LIFE

During our Saturday SEEd Project hours, we’ll have up to 20 or 25 volunteers. We get a lot of work done then. Also, we run a lot of service projects for clubs and, sometimes, whole classes meet at the garden and work.

My long-term hope is that Cal Lutheran will one day host a center for land and sustainability— or something to that effect—and that the SEEd Project is, in this way, well, but a seed.
