How does the combination of science and art express who you are?

How does your art form complement your work in science?

Elizabeth

Computer science allows me to approach a problem analytically, and multimedia helps me find creative solutions.

I love coding, but there are times when I get stuck and find myself just staring at a screen. When this happens, I find it helpful to take a break and do something else, like doodling a picture or writing up another section of a story. When I switch gears back to computer work, I usually see what I’ve done wrong and I’m able to fix it.

I’m curious about the world and its many phenomena, but I also enjoy the humanity of music and its sublime wonder.

Julia Challenging my mind with chemistry, while also embracing my artistic side through music, fulfills my desire to always work both sides of my brain.

Xavier I love being creative and performing in theatre productions, and I’m also very curious to understand how the world around me operates.

Switching back and forth between music and science can actually be pretty refreshing. After long shifts in the lab scoring through fruit flies or studying for a stressful exam, it can be a relief to go to the music world and work on things there. Then I come back to science rejuvenated.

Julia Music takes a lot of energy, focus, critique and concentration to fix mistakes, improve your sound and perfect your technique. Since I am so used to multitasking while performing a piece, I find this skill comes in handy in science, because there is usually more than one element to a reaction or mechanism.

How does your work in science complement your art form?

Elizabeth Instead of making my current multimedia project a linear adventure, I decided to program it into a pick-your-path game. This helped me develop my characters as I had to write about how they react to a variety of situations.

Devin The math classes I’ve taken have provided me with a better understanding of musical theory, and an in-depth comprehension of the patterns that make up music.

Julia Science takes focus, dexterity and attention to detail in order to solve problems and understand function. This complements my study of music because it similarly requires a great level of precise effort to learn a complex piece.

Theatre has allowed me to become a very confident public speaker and be able to share my ideas with others. This is greatly beneficial in science because it has enabled me to effectively share my findings from experiments and research with others.

In science I take ideas and apply them to many different situations and scenarios. Similarly, I can apply techniques and acting styles I learn from one class or production to another.

How is your work relevant today?

“My field of entrepreneurial finance is constantly changing.

The Class: Climate Change “We investigate how contemporary climate change compares to climate variations over Earth’s long history, including our scientific understanding of its causes and its local and global impacts. One favorite assignment: students design and implement a climate change board game.”

How is your work relevant today?

“I examine an important geologic warming event which occurred ~56 million years ago, yet can be related to our current state of climate change. It’s often cited as the best analog for present-day CO2 rise. One of my goals is to help students understand how the geologic record, such as the fossil shells of microscopic organisms, acts as an archive for past climate states and how we can use this knowledge to better understand current and future climate change.”

We are already moving toward another entirely new approach to startup financing—the notion of initial coin offering.

Meanwhile, crowdfunding has grown to a size that puts it in the same boat as venture capital and angel investment.

I keep students up-to-date with these changes in my experiential courses, involving guest speakers and updated business cases.”

The historic Chicano Park in San Diego (pictured), a mosque, and the U.S. side of the border—where students experience prayer services conducted by both Muslims and Christians—are just a few of the sites visited. Together, students explore the intersections of religious diversity, immigration and environmental justice.

ACADEMICS JAVIER MONTELONGO BEGAN CAL LUTHERAN AS A PRE-MED STUDENT. HIS PATH CHANGED WHEN HE STUDIED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN IN SCOTLAND DURING THE SPRING OF HIS SOPHOMORE YEAR. HIS UNIQUE EXPERIENCE ABROAD ALLOWED HIM TO DISCOVER HIS PASSION FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH.

A Shift to Research At Aberdeen, Javier experienced a largescale chemistry lab. Students carried out their own semester-long individual research projects. They focused on learning how to create and test hypotheses in order to conduct meaningful experiments. They interacted regularly with graduate students from around the world, giving Javier the opportunity to learn about different cultures and perspectives. When he returned to the U.S., he attended UPenn’s summer research program, and his academic path shifted to biomedical research.

My study abroad experience taught me that it’s very common for scientists to travel to different parts of the world to do research.

Interacting with scientists from around the world attracted me to the idea of pursing a Ph.D.

As a first-generation college student, my family understood little about the importance of research or what research even is. My study abroad experience opened up the world of research to me, changed my academic path and proved to be valuable to my development personally and professionally.

Krystal P. Rhaburn ASSISTANT ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE at HILL + KNOWLTON STRATEGIES Major: Communication, Public Relations Emphasis

What do you love about your job?

The chance to work with a wide variety of clients. No two days are alike. I can start my day working on an automotive client project, shift to my medical client, then entertainment, then video games, then technology, then casino gaming— and end my day working on oil and gas client deliverables.

This makes for great learning and growth opportunities.

How did your major—and your internships— prepare you for your job?

Hands-on coursework and projects gave me tangible, transferrable skills and knowledge that I use daily at my current position with H+K. Having eight undergraduate internships meant that I was exposed to a vast array of work styles, environments and challenges that have helped me become an adaptable employee. I’ve been commended for my experience, professionalism and confidence.

What are you most passionate about in life?

Helping others. I work as a gymnastics coach to a competitive team, and I’m able to help instill confidence in the girls. As a community service-based pageant titleholder (IJM Miss Coastal Beach State), I’m able to advocate for causes that focus on helping others in need.

Why medical school?

I wanted to apply to medical school from a young age.

Growing up, I watched family and friends not be able to obtain healthcare because of language barriers and not having insurance. My passion in life is to aid those who are in rural areas, lack insurance, and face healthcare barriers or health disparities.

How did Cal Lutheran prepare you for medical school?

Cal Lutheran coursework, for example environmental ethics, multiculturalism and race and politics courses, gave me different points of view which is necessary if you are going to work with people. If you are going to become a great physician, you must know how to communicate with patients and care for them, not just know the science behind their illnesses.

What is your ideal first job and how will you make a difference in the world?

Working in a rural area clinic and doing a lot of volunteer work with the community, preferably somewhere in the San Joaquin Valley. It’s not necessarily that I want to make a difference in the world, but that I want to make a difference, as a physician, in someone’s world.

What do you love about your job?

I’m responsible for all processes—from client onboarding all the way through counsel, consulting and planning. Often, we are the first or second phone call a client makes after receiving life-changing news. The best part of being in this inner circle is hearing all the accomplishments people aspire to and assisting in piecing together a plan to make it all happen—in full IRS compliance!

How has your job challenged you?

You get a lot of fun calls from clients looking to do innovative things. But being so intimately involved in clients’ lives has some drawbacks. When something unexpected happens in a family, an accountant must become a pillar of objectivity. Those calls can be emotionally draining.

How do you want to make a difference in the world?

On the one hand, I’d love to open a university one day.

On the other, I think small change can be powerful.

Buying a first responder coffee might not directly make the world a better place, but hopefully it allows for the types of small changes that world change is built on.

I use the library to study, to print documents, and for social interaction. So many people go to the library. It’s a nice way to see friends but still get work done.

PALMER’S FAVORITE NON-LIBRARY ACTIVITY IN THE LIBRARY Improv night! Students start lining up at 10 p.m., and when the doors open an hour later, everyone rushes in. It’s always packed with students sitting on the floor and standing against the walls.

On stage, the Improv team asks for prompts, acts out hilarious stuff, and interacts with the audience.

It’s a really great environment to laugh and have fun.

Some Little-Known Facts 1. A signed lithograph of Picasso’s Dwarf Dancer occasionally frightens student workers who lock the study room doors at night.

2. T here’s a box of bones to help biology students with their anatomy skills available at the Circulation Desk.

3. S tudents have been known to leave love letters in an old card catalog in the back corner of the library.

CARNIVAL IN KINGSMEN PARK STUDENTS PACKED THE PARK WHEN THE FALL CARNIVAL CAME TO CAMPUS.

The Main Events A fun and festive time was had by all as student musician shared their talents and entertained fellow students. Taste buds were teased by food trucks that offered poke bowls, grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza, lemonade, Italian shaved ice and more.

The 500+ students who attended also enjoyed: •C lassic carnival games like egg-and-spoon races run by student clubs •A raffle for prizes such as a GoPro, Apple Watch, and Echo Dot • I nflatable jump games like Hungry Hippos •A photobooth in a green VW bus

STUDENT LIFE

My friends and I got our bacon and cheddar grilled cheese sandwiches, fries and Italian shaved ices—and sat on a grassy hill overlooking the carnival. The park was filled with music, laughter and yummy smells from the food trucks. We listened to students singing in the gazebo. The food and the entertainment were amazing.

The live music was so cool.

My friends were singing and playing rap music they produced themselves. I love to dance so I got to meet new people and dance and vibe with them. The carnival was a great experience— it was honestly the most fun I’ve had in a while!

The caves were massive and it was super fun navigating them. Our guides taught us a huge amount about the ecosystem.”

I watched a little island fox make its way down the mountain to our campsite to drink water from the rocks below our drinking-water spout. We named it Jeff. There were a lot of Jeffs running around during our trip. It was absolutely adorable!

THE SUMMER BEFORE THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR, THEY MET WITH THE HEAD OF ATHLETICS TO PITCH THE SPORT THEY’D BEEN PLAYING SINCE SEVENTH GRADE. TWO YEARS LATER, WOMEN’S LACROSSE BECAME CAL LUTHERAN’S ELEVENTH WOMEN’S NCAA SPORT.

•C ross Country. Veronica Redpath’s outstanding performance at the NCAA Regionals helped Cal Lutheran with a 21st overall team finish to earn All-West Region honors. The Regals finished 16th in the team competition.

• S occer. One of their most successful seasons in program history, the team reached the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament—their 15th NCAA Postseason appearance. Zandra Stewart, Mandy Crawford, Alexandra Fagerberg and Danielle Vis were named to the NCAA Division III All-West Region teams. Stewart was then named a Third Team All-American.

•V olleyball. The Regals reached the SCIAC Tournament for the 10th time. Maci Haddad wrapped up an All-America sophomore season after also being named First Team All-West Region and First Team All-SCIAC.

The thing I love most about playing lacrosse is the relationships you build with your teammates, who become some of your best friends.

We’re all very supportive, from pushing each other to get up for 6 a.m. weights to helping one another study for a midterm.

Lacrosse is like no other game. It’s a combination of many sports such as hockey, soccer and basketball. It’s so dynamic and fast-paced—it never gets boring for a second.

Meet Coach Laura “Mac” McIntyre Former goalie for Gettysburg College’s first-ever Division III national championship team, Coach “Mac” previously coached lacrosse at McDaniel College and University of the South. “We’re starting to limit the gap in skill,” Coach Mac says, “and it’s getting harder to recognize who are the newer players. The team as a whole is beginning to build chemistry that is crucial to success both on and off the field.”

With the booming growth of lacrosse on the West Coast and a supportive conference, it was a good time to add it to our athletic community. Our goal for the first season is to be competitive and push to attain small successes every day. Over the next five to 10 years we hope to push into the top four.

KINGSMEN

•C ross Country. The team posted several good times at the SCIAC Championships hosted by Pomona-Pitzer, and finished eighth in the team competition.

• F ootball. Nine student-athletes garnered All-SCIAC—Obasi Dees, Ethan Pulley, Caleb Casimere and Jajuan Thomas got the First Team nod while Christian Antezana, Jacob Cerda, Cesar De Leon, Cameron Jones and Connor McDermott were selected to the second team.

Dees was named a Second Team All-American by AFCA.

• S occer. Cal Lutheran started off strong in conference play, winning three of their first four games.

•W ater Polo. The Kingsmen finished the season just one game shy of the SoCal Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament with two All-Conference honorees as Ben Brown was named First Team and Andre Rivas Second Team.

Josh is one of the most outgoing people I have met. He’s always laughing, always.

If Josh is talking, there’s a high probability he’ll laugh immediately after. The constant laughter and high energy are what makes rooming with him fun.

We’ve seen each other basically every day for the past two years, so our friendship is strong. We talk about school, assignments, friends and make sure we have each other’s backs.

Our friendship began at Admitted Students day where we met and really clicked. After the event, I asked him, “Wanna be roommates?”

And he said, “Yeah, sure!” It ended up being a fantastic decision. We are so close that half of our conversations are facial expressions from across the Ullman dining table.

I would say that Maia and I have very similar personalities which is the reason why we get along so well.

Our friendship is silly and crazy, but full of compassion. Brie feels more like my sister than my friend. We’re partners in crime and always finding a way to make each other laugh.
