The Class: The McNair Seminar

Jonathan Goldstein, Senior Major: Exercise Science

The Classes: Advanced Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics Every day I left lectures with useful information I could use as a coach and personal trainer with my athletes or clients at the gym.

In Biomechanics, for example, we learned about how the foot interacts with the ground. This lesson helped me assist a client with Multiple Sclerosis who was having a hard time with her gait. Class topics like adaptations to exercise, motion capture analysis, and exercise in different climates were very exciting because of their practical application to my work.

Also, each class was very reading and writing intensive, which prepared me for graduate school by improving my ability to dissect a research article for relevant information.

These classes really provided me with practical guidance in the lab. I feel extremely confident starting my PhD program in Exercise Physiology at Texas A&M.

Rewarding Assignment: Energy-Expenditure Analysis While Running With and Without Shoes This lab assignment for Advanced Exercise Physiology was my first experience doing physiology research. Being able to use the metabolic cart and treadmill was challenging, yet educational and fun,

The classes, which prepare McNair scholars for summer research, changed my whole academic path. Before the seminar, I believed that I had to be a physician to make a high impact in medicine. Through the seminar, I learned that I could make an even bigger impact by doing research, especially since I want to work in the public health field to prevent diseases.

Classes involved writing a research project proposal, meeting with my professor weekly to plan for the five-week research project, and later, polishing my manuscript for publication. My research involves locating a transposable element that affects the Su(var) 2-10 gene, which leads to a mutation known as extra eye in fruit flies.

THE SCIENCE CLASS THAT

CHANGED MY ACADEMIC LIFE Rewarding Assignment: Writing and Presenting My Research 1. Writing my research proposal was challenging! The seminar taught me how to read scientific papers efficiently and how to integrate all the information given to me into a literature review.

2. P resenting my research in front of the professors was petrifying. Thankfully, we were accustomed to speaking in seminar classes. I learned that if I was prepared and felt confident, my presentation would be great.

Giovanni Flores, Junior The Class: Advanced Computer Programming This course was instrumental in going from writing beginner programs to more complicated code. I became a more advanced programmer after learning about data structures—ways to organize data or information that a computer can store, such as an ordered list of items. By implementing these data structures myself from scratch, I became significantly more competent in my programming abilities. This course solidified my career path because it taught me that solving problems in computer science requires one to trace through problems multiple times, work out all the little details, and work collaboratively with colleagues to understand the content.

Rewarding Assignment: Implementing a Hash Map Data Structure from Scratch A hash map is rather like a dictionary, where there’s information you want (i.e. the definitions), and you find the correct piece of information by using a unique key (i.e. the word). This assignment was complex for me at the time, but after finishing, it I became a lot more detail-oriented and more confident in my abilities. It helped solidify my knowledge and improve my programming ability significantly.

My favorite of many celebrations is held in downtown L.A. Artists from Self Help Graphics and Art and dozens of community groups create altars throughout Grand Park.

Many of them portray social justice themes, such as deaths along the border, gang violence or police brutality. Others honor celebrities, grandmothers and past eras.

Students look at the art and media created

by Latinos, for Latinos, and how it might be different from how mainstream media has historically portrayed Latinos, which can tend to be in stereotypes. Also, they

learn about the history of the Dia de Los Muertos tradition in the U.S. Rather than seeing it simply as the Mexican Halloween, they learn how when Self Help Graphics and Art brought the tradition to Los Angeles from Mexico in the 1970s, it became more of a public celebration of identity, politics and social concerns, alongside the personal and religious traditions to honor those who have passed.

SEDIMENTS TO STAR FISH IN MALIBU I take students on geology field trips—from Wildwood Park and Tarantula Hill near campus, to Vasquez Rocks, the Mojave Desert, Owens Valley and Death Valley. Closer to Los Angeles, my Oceans class heads to the Malibu coast.

We stop at the Point Mugu lagoon and estuary salt marsh overlook to discuss coastal wetlands. Then we move on to Point Mugu to study beach processes and sediments and look at marine sedimentary rocks, which have clam fossils and trace fossil burrows. Driving up Yerba Buena Road, we look for fish scales, fossils and pillow lavas. Finally, at El Matador State Beach we study spectacular erosional coast

landforms and investigate the surprising abundance of marine intertidal life for a beach so close to Los Angeles.

In the field, students can put into context the rocks, minerals and physical earth processes they are learning about in lecture and lab. It also gets them out into nature, which is always a good idea in this digital world.

SKID ROW & THE TUJUNGA WASH My upper-division religion students join philosophy and sociology classes each fall and go to Hollywood and Skid Row to study housing and homelessness.

I also partnered this year with English Professor Carlos Castellanos to take students to the Great Wall.

This half-mile long mural painted in North Hollywood’s Tujunga Wash was designed

by Judy Baca and painted by 400 young adults in the 1970s and 1980s. Two weeks later, we hosted Baca on campus. She talked about connections the young artists made

across race while they worked together, and showed photos of their process with the art and the community. She encouraged us in our dream of creating campus murals, which reflect our community values and tell the stories of the people who are Cal Lutheran. fall/winter 2019

TRACKING SQUIRREL MONKEYS IN THE AMAZON EVERY SUMMER, CAL LUTHERAN BIOLOGY STUDENTS JOIN BIOLOGY PROFESSOR ANITA STONE DEEP IN THE JUNGLE AT THE STONE PRIMATE BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY LAB, WHICH SHE FOUNDED IN 2000.

Professor Stone’s lab studies squirrel monkeys using naturalistic observations to test hypotheses on their social behaviors, mating strategies and life history patterns.

She runs the only study site where this particular species is being monitored. Each summer, Cal Lutheran biology students awarded Swenson Summer Research Fellowships travel to the Amazon to help with her research. Students take on a three semester commitment in order to plan their study, collect and analyze data, and present the results to the scientific community. Once in the Amazon, they endure heat, humidity, mosquitoes, hiking—and no Internet access for eight weeks!

Summer 2019 Research We’ll be examining the monkeys’ gut microbiota, and for that we need… you guessed it, monkey poop! Collecting fecal samples is no easy feat because each monkey weighs less than two pounds, is very active and is running around in sometimes dense canopy vegetation. Finding their feces on the forest floor will be a challenge!

PROFESSOR ANITA STONE

New Field House For 16 summers, Professor Stone (right) had been hosted by her field assistant Ed Viana de Silva (left), his wife Nilda de Sales (middle), and their family near the village of Ananim in Eastern Amazonian Brazil. When she began to bring student researchers to her lab in 2017, she realized there was a need for a dedicated space. So, Cal Lutheran built a house on the Viana de Silva family property for Professor Stone and her students.

Summer 2018 Research Seta Aghababian, Junior Summer Student Researcher Research Focus: Behavioral differences of male and female squirrel monkey juveniles at play.

Seta hypothesizes that juvenile play practices should differ as young males prepare to vigorously compete for females during breeding season. She’ll look at whether males play more than females, who each sex’s play partner is, and how behavior changes as each sex ages.

Since my goal is to become an ecological field researcher, this is the perfect opportunity for me to gain experience in my field. I get to run a project in my area of study and in an environment that tests all my intellectual and professional abilities.

Nathan Delacth, Junior Summer Student Researcher Research Focus: The function of urine washing in squirrel monkeys.

Urine washing is a common behavior among squirrel monkeys; they urinate onto the palm of their hands and rub it onto their feet. Nathan tested four functional hypotheses for its occurrence, collecting behavioral data on two groups of squirrel monkeys—adults and juveniles. Preliminary results mostly support urine washing as a mechanism of anxiety displacement.

This experience definitely reinforced my desire and passion to become a physician. Living in a village with limited resources broadened my perspective. I always knew I wanted to work in underserved areas, but this trip strengthened my desire. This was by far the best experience of my undergraduate journey.

SUMMER IMAGINING VENICE Semester Seminar + 16 days in Venice, Verona and Florence Taught by: Professor Dru Pagliassotti (Communication) and Senior Lecturer Terry Spehar-Fahey (Art) IN CLASS Students investigated Venetian history, geography, demography, culture and politics, with special attention to how Venice operated as a symbol of an untouchable republic, a militant mercantile nation and a dying empire.

IN VENICE (a sampling)

Alexis Ghattas, Senior Major: Exercise Science Hometown: Lancaster, CA HER HIGHLIGHTS • Seeing the Venetian churches. There were so many and each so rich in history and artistic detail that it was breathtaking.

• Uffizi Museum in Florence. We learned about the art in the Uffizi, so to see it in real life felt like a dream.

My most memorable assignment in Venice was waking up at the crack of dawn to paint by the canals. The sunrise was beautiful, and it was so amazing to see a place—usually flooded with people—so serene.

• Rode a Vaporetto to San Michele, the cemetery island • Took a walking tour of Venetian Ghetto in Cannaregio • Experienced an all-day island tour of Murano (glass-making), Burano (lace-making) and Torcello (Venetian-Byzantine architecture)

IN CLASS Students explored the cultures of Great Britain from the age of Stonehenge to the age of chivalry. The class focused on the legends of King Arthur and how Britain under the Celts, Romans, Saxons and Normans influenced the evolution of the Arthurian legends.

IN GREAT BRITAIN (a sampling) • Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman Army Museum, England • Merlin’s Mountain, Wales • Edinburgh Castle, Scotland • Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey and the British Museum

Major: Math Hometown: Baton Rouge, LA

• Edinburgh. We got to know the city and felt a bit like locals. It was the best way to begin our journey.

• Hiking along Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. To know that the Roman army roamed over that vast, green landscape was mind blowing.

Looking at Great Britain through the scope of the King Arthur tales made our time in country feel magical. Avebury and Glastonbury were two of my favorite cities. This trip opened my mind to taking risks. It made me appreciate history and how big this beautiful world is.

TREASURES OF PERU II Taught by: Professor Rafaela Fiore Urizar (Spanish) Professor Samuel Claussen (History) Students took walking tours of Lima and Cusco; visited the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History; experienced a Peruvian cooking class, a salt mine in the Sacred Valley, an Andean community where they helped harvest crops, and a Machu Picchu archaeological site.

EXPLORING JAPANESE SOCIETY & CULTURE Taught by: Professor Akiko Yasuike (Sociology) Professor Ryan Medders (Communication) Students interacted with locals in Tokyo and Kyoto at markets, parks, museums, temples and shrines.

They experienced Zen meditation, kimono wearing, a tea ceremony and a traditional village.

How did Cal Lutheran prepare you for dental school?

All of my professors wanted us to succeed. Their support for our studies extended to the athletic side of campus, where they worked with coaches to build well-rounded student-athletes. This was valuable to me as a water polo team player and a key to my success.

Steps you took to pave the way to dental school?

Cal Lutheran professors encouraged us to attend office hours, which led to meaningful relationships and participation in their research. My Chemical Sciences Fellowship in the John Stauffer Research Fellows Program was a momentous step on my path to dental school.

I developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and having the research on my resume made me stand out as an applicant as well as providing a topic of discussion during interviews.

What do you love about USC’S dental program?

I’m involved in a student organization that holds free dental clinics in the greater Los Angeles area, and also sponsors international aid trips. We traveled to Panama for 12 days in April. I’ve also enjoyed learning about a subject through the experience of solving a problem found in real-life patient cases.

Steps you took while at Cal Lutheran to pave the way to medical school?

• Communication. Talking with people expanded my understanding of the path I was taking, and initiated experiences such as doing research with Dr. Chad Barber.

• Doing well in classes. I knew my GPA would be heavily looked at, along with my MCAT score.

• Experience. Working in hospitals and clinics reinforced my decision to attend medical school and helped me understand the caliber of work required.

Why medical school?

It fulfills three of my goals: to grow mentally, physically and spiritually; to make an impact in the health of my local community; and to serve as a leader and role model for people who need help.

What do you love about LMUDCOM’s medical program?

Its academic rigor and its many opportunities to volunteer locally by doing research and treating underserved communities.

How do you want to make a difference in the world?

In my future practice, I’d like to treat patients and teach them health literacy. Education is important to the self-care of an individual, and it may have a domino effect on the health of the larger population.

Jaleena Evans ’18 Major: Criminology & Criminal Justice Law School: Santa Clara University Law School

How did Cal Lutheran prepare you for law school?

The Criminal Justice program transformed me into someone who works well with diverse groups of people, adapts to different situations, and approaches challenges with different methods of problem solving. Interning for 15 months at the Ventura County Public Defender’s Office gave me valuable insight into the real world.

Steps you took to pave the way to law school?

I wanted to have the highest GPA possible, a nonprofit internship, and law firm work experience before the end of my junior year so that I’d have a strong law school application. I was able to achieve this and more.

Why law school?

During my senior year of high school, my dad was arrested and processed through the criminal justice system. I sat in the courtroom for four weeks, following my dad’s case and watching other cases. Despite my personal situation, I loved being there and felt passionately that I could be an attorney.

What do you love about Santa Clara’s law program?

I love its intellectual challenge. I’ve learned to think complexly about concepts and to challenge the reasoning of others.

CELEBRATING EACH OTHER

DURING SPRING SEMESTER, CAMPUS WAS ALIVE WITH MUSIC AND DANCE FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

THROUGH MUSIC Jishin Taiko Drumming Ensemble Jishin Taiko Drumming Ensemble—dancing and shouting rhythmically to taiko drums— performed their high octane traditional Japanese drumming for a thrilled Cal Lutheran crowd. Three hundred people attended the 23rd annual World Fair, which features art, activities and food from around the world. The fair is hosted by the United Students of the World and the Center for Global Engagement.

I was excited to work with CSU Northridge’s Jishin Taiko Drumming Ensemble. The energy and precision in their performances was breathtaking. It truly was the highlight of World Fair, and we’ll be happy to have them return in the fall.

Mariachi Ensemble Spring Concert Started as a campus club in 2018, the Mariachi Ensemble is now one of the Cal Lutheran Music Department’s official ensembles, as well as a class. The ensemble of 15 musicians includes a core of nine Cal Lutheran students who play guitarrons, vihuelas, guitars, violins and trumpets, as well as sing vocals. A passionate genre of Mexican music, mariachi dates back to the 18th century and evolved distinctive singing styles and instrumentation in rural regions of western Mexico, including sones, boleros and huapangos.

I’ve been a mariachi musician for more than 10 years, and I’m extremely passionate about it.

I created the group on campus so that I could continue learning and performing mariachi, which is not only part of my Mexican heritage, but part of my identity.

I went rock climbing here with Cal Lutheran’s Adventure Club and had an amazing morning.

It’s quite humbling to be surrounded by high cliffs, tall trees and beautiful surroundings.

It brings me peace on days I’m stressed and frees my soul when life feels like a mess.

Favorite Mountains Activities

1. V asquez Rocks Natural Area Park: Located in Agua Dulce, about an hour from campus. I really like this place because of the rock formations—it looks like you’re on another planet.

This park has been featured in films like Holes to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and several Star Trek episodes. There aren’t any designated trails but the open space acts like a giant playground.

•M ountain Biking •H iking with my Puppy •R ock Climbing

2. Whiteface: Located in Simi Valley, 30 minutes from campus. The hike isn’t very long, but it’s steep and kind of a local secret. Once on top of the mountain, you can see the whole Conejo Valley.

I recommend this hike right before sunset—the view is breathtaking.

3. R ancho Sierra Vista: Located in Newbury Park, 15 minutes from campus.

This park has trails ranging from easy loops to strenuous out and backs, including a wonderful out and back that takes you from Newbury Park to Malibu.

Make a reservation at Sycamore Canyon Beach, ride your bike down the incline, and stay at the beach for the night.

I enjoy being in nature as well as getting a good workout in, and all of these activities involve a fair amount of exercise. I personally don’t like doing cardio in a gym so any chance I get to exercise outside, I take it.

BEN BROWN FIRST TEAM ALL AMERICAN*

Ben helped the Kingsmen earn 16 wins, the highest in program history.

“I love water polo because it’s aggressive and highly competitive. I always loved the strategy part of it. At the age of 10, a friend’s dad saw I was good at flag football and asked if I wanted to play water polo at the San Diego Shores Water Polo Club. I gave it a try, and ever since then, I played year round and never missed a season.”

ATHLETICS Maci helped the Regals earn an at-large berth to the 2018 NCAA Championship.

“I love how fast paced the game of volleyball is. It’s never boring to me. I used to play softball, but eventually burnt out on it.

I started playing volleyball and loved every second of it! The fact that the game is constantly changing and is so upbeat is what originally drew me to it.”

•G olf. Finished 5th at the SCIAC Championships. Ally Gaskill was the first Regal to earn All-SCIAC three times.

• S oftball. Kendall Marinesi was named All-SCIAC First Team, the Character Award winner, and earned All-West Region First Team honors.

• T ennis. Christie Kurdys and Lilijana Peters-Semak both landed on the All-SCIAC Second Team.

•W ater Polo. Won the 2019 SCIAC Tournament Championship and received an at-large bid to the national championship.

Bailey Meyer, Nikki Roed and Lexi Rond were named First Team All-American, and Meyer was named Player of the Year, Craig Rond earned Coach of the Year from the ACWPC and he and his staff earned SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year.

• T rack & Field. Alexa Barnes, Kendall Guidetti and Kelsey Rouse were named All-SCIAC and All-West Region. Rouse was the Jennifer Story Character Award winner.

KINGSMEN

•V olleyball. Earned their highest national ranking to date starting at No. 8 and defeated No. 4 Stevens Institute for first top-10 win in program history. Patrick Rowe was the team’s first-ever AVCA Player of the Week.

•B aseball. Runner-up at SCIAC Postseason Tournament. Justin Fong, Ryan Probst, Tanner Wright and Daniel Parr were All-SCIAC First Team. Anthony Sidley and Christian Slattery were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Head Coach Marty Slimak has had 26 consecutive winning seasons.

•G olf. The Kingsmen finished 6th at the SCIAC Championships.

• T ennis. Yahn Gawrit earned First Team All-SCIAC for the second straight year.

It has been a real honor to be selected as a Presidential Scholar because all of my achievements throughout my academic career have been recognized and rewarded.

Thanks to the Presidential Scholarship, I am able to obtain a great education without having to put my family or myself through a financial hardship. It also gives me the opportunity to get involved in sports and other on-campus activities I wouldn’t have had the time to do without the scholarship.

•H alloween Haunted House in the Student Union. They do a good job of giving us quite a scare!

When it came down to deciding what college I was going to attend, it was between Cal Lutheran and one other school. Cal Lutheran was my first choice. However, it was a little out of my price range.

When I was awarded the VAPA scholarship, it changed everything for me and made it possible to attend.
