AmeriCorps Fellows placement: Cal Lutheran’s TRIO Pre-University Programs “My experience as a struggling immigrant and community college student motivated me to work with TRIO to serve students going through similar struggles, such as how to complete college applications and apply for internships and financial aid. I helped students transition successfully to college by tutoring them in pre-calculus and biology, and organized workshops to help them adjust to online learning and develop resume-writing skills.”

We provide a space for Indigenous youth to express themselves and their ideas. I worked on a presentation on how to prepare for the workforce.”

APPROACH RESEARCH DURING THE PANDEMIC

Method

Results

We study infectious diseases and the ways they interact with their various environments. We have two major projects.

The first focuses on identifying the functions of novel proteins used by the bacteria that cause Legionnaire’s Disease.

The goal is to identify how these proteins are contributing to Legionella’s ability to survive within various hosts. The second project focuses on the potential for mutation of the S1 and S2 proteins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

We’ve used bioinformatics in the past to complement projects, but never as THE major method of data collection and analysis that we then plan to complement with traditional biochemistry and molecular biology techniques. We have quite literally flipped this lab’s approach to scientific discovery.

A protein we’ve considered novel may actually have some function, but we had to look at the DNA and protein sequences very closely. Slowly results are emerging and I think it may have a real implication on Legionella work if we back it up with biochemistry/molecular biology experiments. Another finding — SARS-CoV-2 has been mutating at a decent rate in humans even in areas of the genome that are usually kept intact.

Lab Focus My students and I work on cutting-edge particle physics data analysis techniques.

A major focus is our study of the properties of the Higgs boson particle, responsible for the physical mass of other known fundamental particles.

We’re searching for decay processes that have been predicted but are yet to be observed. Our research is conducted using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) multilayer detector at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN*. We maximize our chances of detecting these fundamental particle processes through collaborating with other institutions to design a

Results component improvement for the CMS detectorresponsible for measuring the energies of decay particles, and identifying decay particle types.**

Method With very limited access to labs at collaborating institutions, as well as travel to CERN being interrupted by the pandemic, our group has been mostly concentrating on the analysis of already collected experimental data, as well as working on instrumentation design. We’ve been trying to improve our searches by applying ever more sophisticated data-sorting algorithms.

I’ve been impressed with the students’ ability to apply very sophisticated machine-learning methods for data analysis. They are very effectively involved in graduate school-level research and are actively collaborating with researchers at some of the best national and international particle physics research institutions.

Results

Our long-term goal is to create a new class of antibiotics targeting bacterial iron acquisition. We’re now trying to get a very clear idea of how our target system works — shape, speed and changes it undergoes.

This year, we couldn’t do lab experiments in person, so we began at the end with computer-based structure solutions, rather than preparing crystals first. The students instantly had results and a really positive first impression of their skills as scientists. It made it much easier to stay motivated through all the other protocols to prepare for that payoff.

What surprised me most was how much work we got done. I crowd-sourced hypotheses, and they each piped up to say “my literature says this” or “the structure I solved does this.” There were instant comparisons, and we were able to build analyses fast. They acted less like students and more like scientific colleagues.

CAL LUTHERAN’S FIRST COMMUNITY SCHOLARS FOR BLACK LIVES

Project: Pathways to Leadership Roles in Underrepresented Industries.

This networking forum, which took place in April, included distinguished speakers from underrepresented industries like tech, public office, medicine, education and entrepreneurship; breakout sessions where students network with speakers; and a Q&A session. It was open to all black undergraduates in Ventura County.

Project: Coming-of-Age Book Club Twelve high school students met with Elysia Williams every other week for three months to discuss Black coming-of-age books.

After they read the books, the Santa Barbara County students, working in small groups, came up with their own collective comingof-age story. The purpose was to expose teenagers to positive Black stories to help inspire them to fulfill their dreams.

When I was growing up, it was hard to find novels where Black teenagers were the center, and if they were, the characters dealt with intense trauma. Creating this book club exposed young POC (person of color) teens to positive Black coming-of-age novels, where teenagers who look like them are in the center, living normal teenage experiences and learning from their mistakes. At every meeting, student insights inspired me to keep moving to change the world we live in.

AWARENESS OF SYSTEMIC RACISM Landry Irumva, Senior Major: Political Science

Often career services and networking events do not equip students, and especially Black students, with the skills and knowledge that are crucial to advance to leadership positions.

I hope Black students left the forum feeling like they had tips and insights on how to assume leadership roles in their future careers.

My goal for this project was for people to walk away with an understanding of the reality of systemic racism and the way health care systems negatively impact the Black community.

I hope my documentary changes the practices of some, or at the very least, makes people aware of the biases that disadvantage many members of the Black community who need medical care.

Project: Mini-documentary on Medical Racism This documentary explores the disparities in healthcare that are harming the Black community — otherwise known as “medical racism.” Interviews with healthcare professionals and patients present insights on American healthcare and how the systems in place effect the medical help people receive.

STATE-OF-THE-ART RECORDING STUDIO THE STUDIO COMPLEX FEATURES TWO CONTROL ROOMS CONNECTED TO A LARGE RECORDING ROOM, OUTFITTED WITH A BÖSENDORFER GRAND PIANO AND DW DRUM SET. THE NEW FACILITY ALLOWS THE RECORDING OF LARGE ENSEMBLES OR A SMALL ORCHESTRA.

STUDIO A Enables students and faculty to record music of any genre and can accommodate a large group of musicians. It also creates the opportunity to record film scores.

Equipment: State of the art 48-channel API Vision recording console with full automation, outboard equipment and a Pro Tools HDX recording system

STUDIO B Optimized for editing and mixing, but also has the capability of recording 16 audio channels in the large recording room. Recording I students learn the craft of recording here before moving on to the large console.

Equipment: Avid C-24 control surface with 5.1 surround mixing capability and 16 channels of I/O with a Universal Audio Apollo recording system

CAMPUS

The studio has really helped me understand the ins and outs of the technological side of production.

Currently, I’m working on a song I wrote for a Music Production Club competition in which we have to use at least one track of the song “Roxanne” by Arizona Zervas.

I’ve recorded my own lyrics over the instrumental and used the studio to record some harmonies.

The studio gives me hands-on experience on a professional studio mixing console. I’m currently using the studio for a mixing class project— taking a pre-recorded song and mixing all of the stems together.

I’m also using the studio to record personal projects. As an artist, I’m always working on new projects, and it’s a huge benefit to have access to a studio whenever I’m feeling creative.

Why you love your job?

My nonprofit organization works on federal policy issues surrounding clean energy and energy efficiency. I write blogs, press releases, op-eds and speeches; maintain the website; and create content for social media. I enjoy jumping on a breaking news story or a political development on Capitol Hill and figuring out how to respond to it.

How did your college activities and internships help lead you to your job?

I signed up to be a reporter with The Echo and ended up loving the process of reporting, writing and editing so much that I stayed on to become features editor and then editor-in-chief. That writing and editing experience was essential background for my current position. Other relevant experience include serving as Managing Editor at the Morning Glory literary magazine, interning in Congresswoman Julia Brownley’s office in Thousand Oaks, serving as a summer research fellow, and spending a semester abroad in Thailand. All of that contributed to my being able to get an internship in a Senate office in Washington D.C., where I discovered that political communications was what I wanted to do.

Why you love your job?

Tax planning and comprehensive financial planning are a blend of an art and a science, so they challenge me to think outside the box. I primarily work within the high net worth niche practice at HCVT, researching specific tax-related questions for clients and preparing tax returns.

How did your three college internships help lead you to your current career path?

My first internship, working as a tax intern at a boutique CPA firm, gave me a good introduction to public accounting — and also taught me that I wanted to work at a bigger firm. At my second internship, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I worked with the top cybercrime squad in the country and learned invaluable lessons about thinking critically. I worked as a tax intern at HCVT, my current employer, for my third internship. There, I was exposed to a broad range of clients, and I discovered my true love for working in tax.

Why you love your job?

The most exciting part of my job is being a woman working in the sports industry for the world’s biggest sports league.

I love creating NFL content and distributing it to the fans. Specifically, I work with NFL’s partnerships and syndication business, cutting in-game highlights during the season. I also cut video-on-demand (VOD) content and post it to digital platforms.

How did your college activities and internships help lead you to your job?

I helped the sports information office create digital/social graphics on Instagram.

My passion for video editing and content creation led to a summer digital media internship at the NFL — one of the best experiences of my life! I gained valuable experience using the league’s content management systems to publish VOD content and assist with original and evergreen content. This led to a part-time opportunity as a digital programming assistant during the regular season, where I gained experience cutting in-game highlights in a fast-paced environment.

Stretch & Play the Stress Away: With Baby Goats!

Students learned stress relief poses from wellness exercise instructors as baby goats ran in-between and under them— a fun, funny and truly interactive animal therapy session. Student onlookers had fun laughing at the exercising humans and goats to tunes from iCLU Radio.

Everyone enjoyed playing with goats and eating tacos and desserts.

Just being in the presence of goats was fun! They romped around us while we did basic stretches, walked between our legs and climbed on us.

I had a goat on top of me while I was on all fours. He lost his balance and fell next to me. We lay there, just chilling. It was hilarious.

Movie Night Students enjoyed Croods 2 in the night air at Kingsmen Park, as did many more who streamed the event from their dorm rooms. The first 140 students who stopped by were given popcorn, candy, Chipotle and fuzzy sweatshirt-shaped blankets — and a MacBook Pro, iPad and Apple Watch were raffled off.

I met up with some friends and we gawked at how much free stuff ASCLUG was giving out. Once we got our goodies, it was dark and we settled down to watch the movie, wrapped in our blankets. My friends and I talked about how much we had missed campus, even the nocturnal frogs in Kingsmen Park!

CLU Market A fun and lively shop-for-free bazaar attracted hundreds of students, who browsed and selected art, self-care, electronics and outdoor products, and took part in raffles giving away an assortment of prizes. People scattered across the lawn enjoying free food, cookies and cupcakes, while listening to music from iCLU Radio and student performers. Flowers were passed out, and a student artist gave away self-designed stickers.

PRIDE AND DEAR ASIAN YOUTH CELEBRATE DIVERSITY, INCLUSION & ACTIVISM

STUDENT LIFE

PRIDE PRIDE* works to create a safe environment for LGBTQIA** students on campus. It holds weekly meetings, movie and game nights, and its signature event: the super-popular annual Drag Show.

PRIDE Club provides a place for LGBTQ+ students and allies to find community, learn about LGBTQ+ history and have fun connecting with each other. During the pandemic, we’ve held virtual meetings weekly, even if just to destress by getting together for a game night. For me, PRIDE Club has been a space where I feel welcome and that I love deeply.

Dear Asian Youth at CLU PRIDE Drag Show showcases talented Cal Lutheran students and explores the wide range of gender performance and expression. While the virtual show looked a little different this year, the audience participated in a live Kahoot! featuring questions about drag history, queer culture and trivia, with prizes for the highest scorers.

Although I missed the contagious energy of live performance, it was fun watching my friends get super creative with their drag performances—and have so much fun!

Dear Asian Youth at CLU is a Cal Lutheran student organization aimed at political engagement and activism, especially around Asian issues. This year the club, both on campus and nationally, has taken on the issues of hatred toward Asians during the pandemic, firstgeneration student advocacy, solidarity within communities of color and more.

The club held a virtual voter registration rally in the fall, and it plans to sponsor food drives and clinics in local AAPI communities.

Dear Asian Youth helps cultivate that feeling of belonging in a diverse atmosphere, where we’re welcome to share our stories. This year, COVID-19 has made us all feel lonely, especially as Asian Americans, in a time of misdirected anger and hatred toward our communities.

Being part of an organization, which is so kind and advocates for issues that are so much bigger than us, has made me feel like I belong.

HOW WE FOUR STAYED ATHLETES SHARE THEIR WORKOUTS THAT KEPT IN SHAPE PANDEMIC THEM COMPETITION READY Luke Rodarte, Junior Sport: Men’s Swimming and Diving Major: Exercise Science

I’ve been lucky because the aquatic center at Cal Lutheran has been open since the middle of summer 2020, so I’ve been able to train consistently.

When school started in fall 2020, we weren’t cleared to practice as a team, but a few of my teammates and I have been locked into a routine. We also lifted weights on our mornings off from the pool. I qualified for Olympic trials in November, so everything that I’ve been doing is in preparation for that. It’s been the most demanding training I’ve ever put my body through.

New training activities?

My twin brother and I built a small home gym in our carport. Every day, I did weight-lifting, HIIT workouts, hill sprints and other strength and endurance training.

I worked on my game at a home basketball hoop. In the spring, I followed Coach Holmberg’s strength and conditioning program in preparation for playing a shortened spring basketball season.

I drove down to Huntington Beach every morning and surfed for a few hours.

It was a much-needed release and took my mind off of all the chaos going on. I also took up longdistance running on trails through our local canyon and 25-mile bike rides to the beach.

New training activities?

When I get recovery days, I like to surf. You can get a killer shoulder workout from the paddling, but for me it’s more of mental reboot.

ATHLETICS

In the first several months of the pandemic, my workouts were mostly running, push-ups, sit-ups, air-squats, lunges and pull-ups.

Eventually, I gained access to an outdoor weight facility, which allowed me to gain more strength by indulging in harder workouts.

I also picked up long-distance running, which was a main factor in staying in shape.

On my off days, I went on a light jog around my neighborhood for 30 minutes while listening to music. I also did sprints on an incline for 30-45 minutes.

Running surely benefited my mental health. It allowed me to take time for myself and enjoy the beauty of being outside.

I’ve been working with a trainer several times a week doing strength training, conditioning and tons of injury prevention exercises.

I also trained with a friend, focusing on ball work. Then in January, my teammates and I started playing futsal twice a week at 6:30am.

I feel like these routines have kept me in shape for the upcoming fall season.

World Fair Talent Show

Night Market

This signature event of International Education Week (IEW), organized by the Center for Global Engagement, was produced virtually in March. Students submitted videos of their talent, representing cultures from around the world in areas such as dance, music, poetry reading, cooking and fashion.

In April, students celebrated APIDA* Heritage Month at its first-ever Night Market in Kingsmen Park, organized by the Center for Cultural Engagement & Inclusion. The fun included candy lei making, trivia, APIDA snacks and delicious free food courtesy of Okamoto Kitchen — their famous sushi burritos were a huge hit!

I recorded dance videos during my study breaks. I had fun dancing to four different songs and freestyling to each of them. I chose to submit the song, “Ojos Asi” by Shakira, because it has a Mediterranean feel to it and the background music felt so home to me.

Lu’au The annual Kupa’a Hawai’i Club’s lu’au is the largest student-run campus event. Music, food and fellowship combine to celebrate the culture and diversity of the islands.
