This is why our students are such active participants in their own education. They see their professors as both leaders and fellow learners who guide them into chosen fields where passion fuels their pursuits.

Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs This edition of At the Leading Edge is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Cal Lutheran faculty from June 2022 through May 2023. It includes conference presentations, journal articles, books, grants, exhibitions, performances, creative projects, awards and appointments.

As we focus on issues of social justice at Cal Lutheran, many of our faculty members directed their scholarship toward underrepresented groups. Some examples of this from the past year include:

• Sofia Ramirez Davis (Learning and Teaching) presented “Transitioning Deaf/Hard of Hearing Students from High School to Adulthood” at the No Limits for Deaf Children and Families Building Connections Three Day Parent Workshop.

• Cynthia Duarte (Sociology) published “Beyond Symbolic Ethnicity: Strategic Ethnicity and the Negotiation of Identity among Third-plus Generation Mexican Americans in Los Angeles” in Interdisciplinary Humanities: Latinx Identities.

• Dominique Vargas (English) presented “Latinidad and Indigeneity: Racial Identity in Process” at Berry College in Georgia.

The quality of work by Cal Lutheran faculty members, from theater and music performances, to artistic exhibitions, to an array of conference presentations and journal articles, continues to be impressive. 2023 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Michael Gagliardo, PhD BS, Southwestern University MA, PhD, University of Texas at Austin Michael Gagliardo, professor of mathematics, received the 2023 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community.

In nominating Gagliardo for this award, a colleague wrote, “Above all, he is truly committed to constantly improving the effectiveness and academic quality of his courses by fearlessly searching [for] and implementing some of the newest teaching methods at the forefront of mathematics educational research.”

Always looking for new ways to teach complex concepts to his students, Gagliardo recently started using the Inquiry-Oriented Linear Algebra (IOLA) teaching method in his upper-division linear algebra course.

IOLA focuses on developing student materials composed of challenging and coherent task sequences that facilitate an inquiry-oriented approach to the teaching and learning of linear algebra. Students work on activities that use the concepts of linear algebra before they are defined.

When it is time to define the terms, the definitions seem obvious because the students have been using the ideas to solve problems.

“Whether he is traveling to Spain with Dr. Fiore Urízar and students as part of the Mathematics, Architecture and Detective Fiction seminar; participating in countless Center for Teaching and Learning workshops; using a flipped classroom technique and drawing from InquiryOriented Linear Algebra; or advising the Mathematics Club or Student Life Committee, Dr. Gagliardo’s passion for teaching, mathematics and student engagement is obvious,” Cal Lutheran President Lori E. Varlotta said in presenting the award.

When accepting the award, Gagliardo told students, “As faculty, not only are we preparing you for the questions of today, we are preparing you for the unknown questions over the next five, 10, 20 years. Many of us do this by asking you to work on questions or problems that are messy or open. We ask you to think about concepts where the path to the solution has not been laid out in front of you, but instead, left for you to discover. Not only do we ask you to do this in your major, but in other disciplines as well. This relates to one of the core ideas of the liberal arts university: that a math major, through the guidance of faculty, can benefit from learning about the other sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, art, theater and music. As faculty, we hope that you recognize value in what you are learning, but sometimes it takes new challenges to help you see that.”

PROVOST DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARDS The Provost Distinguished Scholar Award was developed to further the building of a community of scholars at Cal Lutheran.

Each year the award is granted to two faculty members, one undergraduate faculty and one graduate faculty, who have demonstrated significant achievement in research or creative work. The award is funded by a gift from the estate of Pamela M. Jolicoeur, who was provost at Cal Lutheran from 1993 to 2004.

Michael Cosenza, EdD Professor, Graduate School of Education Michael Cosenza has been an active and consistent scholar for many years as a leading voice in the teacher preparation residency program model known as Professional Development Schools (PDS). Since 2018, Cosenza has been a co-editor of one book and co-author of a second about the model; written seven articles and eight chapters; and given multiple national, state and local presentations. At Cal Lutheran, Cosenza has established a network of PDS schools that serve our teacher education candidates. The PDS program at Cal Lutheran was recognized in 2021 as an exemplary partnership by the National Association for Professional Development Schools and in 2020 by the California Association of School-University Partnerships.

Cosenza serves as the principal investigator and program director for the TEAMS (Teacher Experiences Advancing Mathematics and the Sciences) project, which was funded in January 2023 by a grant of up to $1.2 million over five years from the National Science Foundation’s Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program. This project encourages STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors and STEM professionals to pursue careers in K-12 teaching, especially in high-need school districts.

“We know from the districts we work with in Ventura County that there is a high need for math and science teachers,” Cosenza said. “We’re hoping to help students understand why teaching has benefits even though it might not compete financially with other career options.”

Cosenza’s new book, being published in summer 2023, presents case studies of eight universities and their partner schools that are successful in developing and sustaining P-12 school-university partnerships.

Anita Stone, PhD Associate Professor, Biology A native of Brazil, Anita Stone is a behavioral ecologist specializing in Neotropical primates.

Her field research takes place in eastern Amazonia, where she has studied the same population of squirrel monkeys since 2000. Stone is interested in primate life histories, social behavior and sexual selection, and actively integrates undergraduate students into her fieldwork.

In 2022, Stone received Cal Lutheran’s largest National Science Foundation grant to date, $307,486, to study sexual selection in Brazilian squirrel monkeys. Stone and nine undergraduate students will spend three summers studying sexually selected traits and behaviors in the Saimiri collinsi species living in the eastern Amazonia forest.

A colleague wrote, “Research with Dr. Stone provides a unique, often life-changing experience for students, both academically (the research experience itself) and culturally. While conducting their research, students spend eight weeks immersed in a remote village in Amazonian Brazil, living with a host family and interacting with the local community. This experience develops their emotional maturity, flexibility, independence and cultural competence.”

“I am a teacher-scholar, and my research is intimately tied to my teaching,” Stone said. She uses a model in which students join her lab group for three semesters, during which they are involved in every step of the research process, from the development of their research question and hypotheses, to study design, proposal writing, data collection and analysis, and presentation of their findings. Stone often recruits research students from historically underserved communities in STEM. In the past three years, Stone has co-authored one peer-reviewed article and three poster presentations with her research students as first authors.

FACULTY AWARDS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice

Cynthia Duarte, PhD Assistant Professor, Sociology Cynthia Duarte received the Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice, for co-founding the DREAMers Ally Training Program to support undocumented students. Duarte, Assistant Professor and director of the Sarah W. Heath Center for Equality and Justice, identified a need on our campus to train faculty and staff about the experiences and support needed for DREAMer students. Now, as you walk around campus, you can see the butterfly stickers, a physical representation of all those who have participated in the training. The ideas imbedded in the program have created an even more inclusive Cal Lutheran community.

Dean’s Award for Innovation in Pedagogy

Kirstie Hettinga, PhD Associate Professor, Communication Kirstie Hettinga received the Dean’s Award for Innovation in Pedagogy. As the faculty adviser for The Echo, Cal Lutheran’s award-winning student newspaper, Hettinga helps educate the next generation of media professionals. The Dean’s Award for Innovation in Pedagogy recognizes her efforts to keep her classes current and prepare students for a changing media landscape. Specifically, she revised a course to include investigative reporting, data-driven journalism and solutions journalism, and invited top-notch journalists to demonstrate their use. A student wrote, “This course taught me so much, not just about journalism but about teamwork, social skills, proofreading, giving, and applying feedback, etc.”

Dean’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Work

Mahmoud Salimi, MFA Assistant Professor, Film and Television Mahmoud Salimi received the Dean’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Work. During the past few years, Professor Salimi’s films and screenplays have been selected for inclusion in over 50 film festivals and have won several awards including a writer’s residency award, best short film award, two best short screenplay awards and a feature length screenplay award. In addition to these wins, he has been nominated for eight awards in several categories. Salimi’s excellent creative work continues, as he currently has two films, a documentary and short drama in post-production, and is completing two screenplays.

Nathan Carlson, PhD Professor, Mathematics Nate Carlson received the Dean’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Work. Carlson’s research in set-theoretic topology is recognized internationally, with recent presentations in the Czech Republic, Italy, and Hungary. Within the past two years Carlson has had seven papers accepted for publication and three more under review. He has collaborators from around the country and the world, including those in Sicily with whom he has received grants to conduct research. Carlson’s work influences the approach he takes in the classroom with upper division material and collaborations with undergraduate research students.

Dean’s Award for Service

Julie Kuehnel, PhD Professor, Psychology Julie Kuehnel received the Dean’s Award for Service. In her role as the faculty Regent representative this year, Kuehnel served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee and advocated for the faculty with the Board of Regents. Throughout her 43-year tenure at Cal Lutheran, Kuehnel has shown a strong commitment to the university. Among her many contributions, Kuehnel started the First Year Seminar, implemented the first assessment plan as associate provost, and revised the Faculty Handbook. In the Social and Behavioral Sciences, she has administered the Culver grants since their inception and served as the Psychology Department chair for many years.

Delil Martinez, PhD Assistant Professor, Mathematics Delil Martinez received the Dean’s Award for Service. Martinez is the chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and co-chairs the Faculty Learning Circles branch of Project CHESS, a collaborative project of California Lutheran University and Moorpark College that aims to offer faculty the support, tools, and a community to adjust course offerings to make them more inclusive, equitable, and culturally relevant. In the classroom, Martinez is reimagining how statistics is taught within the Mathematics Department. Her time, effort and leadership are appreciated.

Travis Peterson received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring. Peterson has mentored in many programs across the university including the STEM Academy, the ALLIES in STEM Program, and the Swenson Summer Research Program. He always is available for students, and they appreciate his supportive nature and positive attitude. Students who have been mentored by Peterson have been admitted to prestigious graduate programs, presented at professional conferences and published papers in peer-reviewed journals. Peterson also serves as the director of First Year Experience, faculty advisor for the Swimming and Diving Program and faculty mentor to the Exercise Science Club.

Megan Fung received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Mentoring. Fung has over 30 mentees in both the environmental sciences and geosciences majors. She teaches the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department capstone course which prepares students for careers and graduate programs. Through the Office for Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship, Fung mentors research students in the ALLIES in STEM and Swenson Summer Research Programs. Fung oversees students who work in the SEEd Garden and as departmental assistants. She also serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Earth Society Club and the Pacific Northwest Club on campus.

FACULTY AWARDS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION Scholarship Award

Trudy Arriaga, EdD Associate Dean of Equity and Outreach and Program Director for the MA in Educational Leadership, Oxnard and Main Campus Trudy Arriaga received the Graduate School of Education’s award for scholarship. During the last year, Arriaga has given over 120 virtual and in-person presentations that include national conferences, workshop sessions, district professional development, and long-term consultation focused on systemic and gender equity, board and superintendent relationships, and women in leadership. Although her work has been focused primarily on K-12 and higher education, Arriaga extended her reach to the National Institutes of Health, CSULA, Library Services, and corporate businesses. In addition to her two books, Opening Doors and Leading While Female, Arriaga recently published a companion journal to the latter book, Leading While Female: A Guided Reflective Journal.

Service Award

Tymika Wesley, EdD Associate Professor, Learning and Teaching Tymika Wesley received the Graduate School of Education’s service award for her efforts in bringing the Bilingual Language Authorization (BLA) to the credentialing program, addressing a need within our neighboring school districts to produce bilingual educators. Since securing the BLA, she has worked tirelessly to bring the BLA to our partner school district, Santa Maria-Bonita, as a residency program. This has included trainings and reworking elements of our program. In addition, Wesley secured a $300,000 grant from Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity to strengthen equity initiatives within the Department of Learning and Teaching.

Teaching Award

Nicolas Mize, EdD Visiting Lecturer, Educational Leadership Nick Mize is the recipient of the Graduate School of Education’s teaching award. He is an accessible and devoted teacher in the Ed Leadership EdD, MA and PASC programs.

His expertise in the California Administrative Performance Assessment has ensured the tremendous success rate of passage for our students. His knowledge and experience in Educational Leadership have impacted hundreds of Cal Lutheran students as they move forward in leadership. His door is always open to Cal Lutheran students to assure that they have all they need to succeed. We applaud Mize’s excellence in teaching.

SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Scholarship Award

Dazhi Chong, PhD Associate Professor, Business Administration Dazhi Chong received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Research and Scholarship. Chong joined the School of Management in 2016 as an assistant professor. Since then, he has excelled in teaching courses, mostly at the graduate level, and has developed a steady output of scholarly articles in journals such as the Journal of Management Analytics, Information Discovery and Delivery, and the Journal for Industrial Integration and Management. He also has given presentations at conferences such as the Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems, the Workshop on Database and Datamining and the Workshop on eBusiness.

Service Award

Matthew Fienup, PhD Executive Director, Center for Economic Research and Forecasting Matthew Fienup received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Service. As executive director of the Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF), Fienup has produced impactful research that increases the visibility of the university in both regional and national arenas. CERF’s forecasting work received three consecutive annual national forecasting awards. He also has pioneered widely lauded and frequently cited research that documents the large and rapidly growing economic contribution of Latinos living in the U.S. His achievements have elevated the standing of the School of Management and extended the reach of our brand far outside our traditional geography.

Susan Murphy, PhD

Susan Murphy received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Helping students to learn and acquire knowledge, skills and abilities has always been at the core of Murphy’s commitment to the profession, and she excels at it. Murphy has taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her students talk about how much they have learned about organizations and individuals; others recall a truly exciting and inspiring classroom experience; and yet others remember Murphy’s sincere care for each student’s story and their learning progress. Murphy also received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2015.

California Lutheran University has seen remarkable growth since its founding in 1959. The university keeps pace with the changing needs of students while remaining true to its mission: to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and committed to service and justice. Our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation demonstrates the university's commitment to living out its mission within the changing context of student demographics.

The 225-acre main campus in Thousand Oaks is home to a dynamic liberal arts and sciences university with 3,500 undergraduate and graduate students who represent a diversity of faiths and cultures. Cal Lutheran has other locations in Westlake Village, Oxnard and Santa Maria as well as Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley.

Cal Lutheran offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Psychology, School for Professional and Continuing Studies and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Forty-one majors and 41 minors are offered in the traditional undergraduate program.

The Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals program offers degrees in eight majors. Graduate programs include doctorates in educational leadership, higher education leadership, clinical psychology and theology; and master’s degrees in education, psychology, business, economics, information technology, public policy and administration, and divinity.

Cal Lutheran is deeply involved in service to communities in Ventura County and beyond.

Examples include affordable counseling services, the Autism and Communication Center, professional development for nonprofit leaders, economic forecasting, a program to teach K-12 subjects using drama techniques, a community swimming pool, and NPR and local news through KCLU Radio. The university’s thriving arts programs promote cultural awareness and provide intellectual and educational benefits to the region.
