They strive to instill in each generation of students the same sense of purpose they bring to their own work, the same desire for knowledge of what’s coming next, and the same need for greater understanding.

This is why our students are such active participants in their own education. They see their professors as both leaders and fellow learners who guide them into chosen fields where passion fuels their pursuits.

We admire our faculty for their boldness, for daring to illuminate and push the boundaries of knowledge past the conventional. Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs This edition of At the Leading Edge is an opportunity to celebrate the highlights of the scholarly work of Cal Lutheran faculty from June 2019 through May 2020. It includes conference presentations, journal articles, books, grants, exhibitions and performances, awards, and appointments. Throughout these pages are also reflections from faculty on how their students inspired them during the challenges of this year.

Most of the 2019-2020 academic year was “business as usual” until the coronavirus hit in March and the work of faculty was abruptly altered. Classes shifted to a virtual modality and faculty learned new technologies to maintain their close connections to students. Some academic conferences were cancelled and others shifted to an online format. Faculty worked from home and adjusted to home schooling, eldercare, and the anxieties of life during a pandemic. Through all of this, the resilience of the Cal Lutheran faculty came through with their continued focus on providing a student-centered quality educational experience for our students.

As we focus on serving our students at Cal Lutheran, many of our faculty directed their scholarship toward ways to support students of diverse backgrounds and students who are the first in their families to attend college. Some examples of this from the past year include:

• Sharla Berry presented “Being Aware of Learning Opportunities and Constraints Posed by Online Teaching and their Consequences for Minoritized Students” in a webinar with USC's Center for Urban Education and the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

• Heidi Coronado, Angela Rowley, and Gail Uellendahl presented with students on “Using the Cultural Wealth Model to Support the Success of First-Generation Graduate Students: Research to Practice” at the First-Generation Southwest Symposium.

• Edlyn Vallejo Peña co-published “Whose Liability Is It Anyway? Cultivating an Inclusive College Climate for Autistic LGBTQ Students.”

• Diane Rodriguez-Kiino co-published “Academic Mindset Development at Hispanic Serving Institutions: A Framework for Holistic Servingness for Underrepresented Student Success.”

• Andrea Sell presented “Supporting Underrepresented Students in Undergraduate Research” at the New American Colleges and Universities Summer Institute.

• Mary Jo Shane co-published “An interdepartmental collaboration to target research and writing challenges of international graduate students.”

• Dan Tillapaugh presented “Supporting historically underrepresented men in higher education: Reframing masculinity through resilience and community cultural wealth frameworks.”

The quality of work by Cal Lutheran faculty, from theatre and music presentations, to artistic exhibitions, to an array of conference presentations and journal articles continues to be impressive. I invite you to read through this booklet to see for yourself the range of activities achieved by Cal Lutheran’s faculty in 2019-20.

2020 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Jamie Banker, PhD Jamie Banker, an associate professor in the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology program, received the 2020 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students, and the rest of the university community.

Banker received her BA in human development and family studies from Colorado State University, her MS in marriage and family therapy from the University of San Diego, and her PhD in human development and marriage and family therapy from Virginia Tech. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist and an AAMFT approved supervisor. Banker joined the faculty in 2010 and directed the counseling psychology program for seven years.

As a practitioner, Banker treats individuals, couples and families in therapy and supervises training therapists. She specializes in treating issues related to women’s health. After completing her PhD, she helped develop a postpartum support program for women and their families at Concord Hospital in New Hampshire. As a researcher, Banker focuses on decreasing the gap between medical and mental health assessment and treatment. She also devotes a portion of her research and advocacy to the prevention and recovery efforts of mass shootings around the United States. As a doctoral student at Virginia Tech in 2007 when a gunman killed 32 people on campus, Banker assisted survivors in their psychological recovery. After the Borderline shooting in Thousand Oaks in 2018, she provided emotional support and resources to students, faculty, staff and community members. Banker has published research on community trauma, young adult sexuality, best practices for training systemic therapists and psychotherapy interventions related to women’s health.

Known not only as an excellent teacher and clinical supervisor for trainees, Banker is also a dedicated mentor to students as they conduct research, submit publications and prepare to enter doctoral programs, said President Chris Kimball. “She has been a transformational teacher and leader for more than a decade,” he said. “She has worn many hats, often simultaneously, and her impact has gone well beyond her program.”

Currently, Banker is helping people cope with the pandemic as a volunteer psychotherapist with the California Mental Health Corps. She used her virtual acceptance speech for the teaching award as an opportunity to comfort students: “I want to tell you that it is OK to feel, and fully feel, all that you are experiencing right now…We have lost some sense of security, some sense of safety and, absolutely, our sense of predictability.”

Banker sits on multiple boards and committees nationally and internationally. From 2018-2020, she held an appointed seat on the Ventura County Behavioral Health Advisory Board.

PROVOST DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARDS The Provost Distinguished Scholar Award was developed to further the building of a community of scholars at Cal Lutheran. Each year the award is granted to two faculty members, one undergraduate faculty and one graduate faculty, who have demonstrated significant achievement in research or creative work. The Faculty Awards Committee receives nominations and selects the award winners. The award is funded by a gift from the estate of Pamela M. Jolicoeur, who was provost at Cal Lutheran from 1993 to 2004.

Vlad Vaiman, PhD Professor, School of Management Vlad Vaiman is one of the world’s most accomplished scholars in the area of Talent Management.

In the past three years, Vaiman has published three books, seven articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, five peer-reviewed research chapters, nine professional publications and editorials, seven peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and he has made 12 conference presentations.

Vaiman is often sought out as a speaker at national and international conferences as well as large companies around the world. He is the chief editorial consultant and co-founder of the European Journal of International Management and serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed academic journals including European Management Review, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Knowledge Management, and others. He does not limit his research activities to the academy, but actively shares his research with local, national and international professional communities.

School of Management Dean Gerhard Apfelthaler writes, “Most importantly, he is also very effective in the integration of his research into the classroom. The way he uses his own research in his teaching is perceived by students to display the perfect balance of cutting edge, rigorous research and relevance for application in management.” Faculty colleague Harry Domicone adds, “In my numerous discussions with Cal Lutheran students and alumni (domestic and international), Dr. Vaiman’s classes and his reputation for ‘conducting theoretical research and demonstrating that it is practical and applied’ are consistently highlights of the conversations.” The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) named Vaiman as the recipient of its 2019 Teaching Excellence Award.

Professor, Languages and Cultures

D I S T I N G U I S H E D

The foundation of Sheridan Wigginton’s research is the analysis of how minority populations experience and navigate predominately white spaces in Latin America. Those spaces can be physical, like schools and textbooks for example. Or they can be conceptual or systemic, like national identity, language, and the law. The clearest way she has integrated her work into her teaching is by creating the course “Race and Ethnicity in Latin America” in the Department of Languages and Cultures. The course guides students through an exploration of various discourses surrounding race and ethnicity in the region from the colonial period to current day.

At Cal Lutheran, she worked to create and expand the role of equity advocates in faculty searches. She engages the wider community in her research by serving as president of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association and as an equity fellow at the Center for Urban Education at the University of Southern California.

In addition to conference presentations, and a book chapter, Wigginton recently co-authored the book entitled Unmastering the Script: Education, Critical Race Theory, and the Struggle to Reconcile the Haitian Other in Dominican Identity.

“In a series of class projects, students demonstrate how they understand systems of oppression by creating their own social movement manifestos that outline the historical and ethno-racial contexts of various Latin American countries,” said Wigginton. “I love seeing how students use that knowledge to advocate for the people who need it most. And that’s a skill I hope they continue to use long after the class has ended.”

FACULTY AWARDS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Paloma Vargas, PhD Assistant Professor, Biology and Director, Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives Paloma Vargas received the Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for demonstrating commitment to these principles in the College and beyond. As Director of HSI Initiatives, her work on campus focuses on being the liaison between all departments at Cal Lutheran on issues of equity and accessibility. Her goal is to address issues of justice, equity, and access in higher education for historically marginalized groups (Latino/a, Black, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans). Much of her focus is on breaking down systemic barriers and policies that disproportionately affect the success of minoritized groups within the higher education system.

Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising For demonstrating commitment and service to undergraduates through outstanding mentoring, academic advising and career counseling, Jesus Cordova Guerrero and Mary Oksala were selected to receive the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.

Jesus Cordova Guerrero, PhD Assistant Professor, Chemistry Jesus Cordova Guerrero conducts research in his lab with undergraduate students, and together they present this research at local and national conferences. He also serves as the STEM Experiential Opportunities liaison, where he provides hands-on experiences for students in STEM fields. As a testament to his strong mentoring skills, Cordova Guerrero was selected to be the McNair Scholars Program Faculty Lead, where his role is to share strategies and resources with the McNair faculty mentors as a way to create a more meaningful experience for McNair Scholar students.

Mary Oksala, PhD Assistant Professor, Physics Mary Oksala advises students in physics, teaches freshman seminar, and is a key faculty mentor in the ALLIES in STEM program. As an observational stellar astrophysicist, she serves as a mentor to undergraduate students with their research on topics related to astrophysics. In addition, Oksala serves as a faculty liaison for the STEM Academy, a three-week summer bridge program at Cal Lutheran that gives students a jumpstart in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes. She is also the faculty adviser for the Physics Club and the Physics Honors Society, Sigma Pi Sigma.

Dean’s Award for Innovation in Pedagogy

Schannae Lucas, PhD Professor, Criminology and Criminal Justice Schannae Lucas received the Dean’s Award for Innovation in Pedagogy for demonstrating superior contributions to the development and delivery of effective teaching and learning experiences. Lucas was the first to implement the “Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program” in Ventura County. This innovative prison education program is a college course taught with both Cal Lutheran students and incarcerated students at the local jail. She has graduated two classes so far, implemented “Pathway 101” re-entry educational and vocational workshops, and is transforming the lives of both inside and outside students. Lucas’ work has been featured by ABC News, Ventura County Star, and Living Lutheran magazine.

Dean’s Award for Scholarship/Creative Work

Molly George, PhD Associate Professor, Criminology and Criminal Justice Molly George received the Dean’s Award for Scholarship/Creative Work, which recognizes achievement based on the quality of scholarship, performances, or creative activities. George has led a research team on a six-year longitudinal, multi-methodological evaluation study of Safe Passage, a youth intervention program that is operated through a collaboration between the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and the Conejo Recreation and Park District. She has made important contributions to the areas of scholarship and programming while serving some of the most vulnerable children in Thousand Oaks. Her work in the community also includes collaboration with the Ventura County Family Justice Center.

Dean’s Award for Service

Sharon Docter, PhD Professor, Communication For exemplifying the notions of vocation, service and justice embedded in Lutheran higher education and in the Cal Lutheran mission, Sharon Docter was selected to receive the Dean’s Award for Service. Docter is a truly effective, thoughtful and generous advocate for the faculty and for the mission of the university as a faculty member. Docter has inspired a legacy of work that other people look to as a model for how to be faculty advocates and contribute to the betterment of the university and community in general.

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION Scholarship Award

Sharla Berry, PhD Assistant Professor, Educational Leadership The Graduate School of Education selected Sharla Berry as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship. As a first-year faculty member, Berry excelled with regard to the quantity and quality of publications and presentations. These include four publications in peer reviewed journals, one chapter in an edited book, one self-published book, and two presentations at national research conferences.

Berry’s scholarship explores online teaching and learning in postsecondary environments, and considers topics related to online equity and inclusion. She plans to expand her research agenda to online teaching and learning across the K-20 spectrum.

Service Award

Lecturer, Counselor Education

Heidi Coronado and Angela Rowley were selected to receive the Graduate School of Education’s annual Service Award due to their outstanding leadership in creating and implementing the Department of Counselor Education's Strive Scholars program. Strive Scholars was launched in fall 2018 as a program to support incoming first-generation graduate students. Rooted in a strengths-based, community cultural wealth approach, the program began with 22 students who met several times during the academic year to learn from presenters around topics such as academic writing, creating an autoethnography, and battling imposter syndrome. The program has now grown to 38 students. Through their work and dedication, they have created a deeply important, transformative learning experience for our students.

Teaching Award

Tymika Wesley, EdD Associate Professor, Learning and Teaching The Graduate School of Education selected Tymika Wesley as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. As an instructor, Wesley draws on her expertise from teaching in LAUSD and shares her knowledge and insights in powerful ways that equip students for today's classrooms. She is constantly reflective and always interested in improving the student experience in her courses. Students attest to her open and strong advocacy for students and her ability to ensure equity and access for every student.

SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Scholarship Award

Ran Lu-Andrews, PhD Assistant Professor Ran Lu-Andrews was selected to receive the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship. Her research interests focus on corporate finance and real estate.

She has published her research in premier academic journals such as the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, the Eastern Economic Journal, the International Journal of Managerial Finance, and the Review of Accounting and Finance. Lu-Andrews’ research contributions have earned her the highest possible recognition in her field, ranking No. 34 (out of 889 authors globally) in the Real Estate Academic Leadership Ranking for the years 2013-2017.

Service Award

Michael Panesis, MBA Executive Director, Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship In recognition of outstanding service to the university and community, Michael Panesis was selected to receive the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Service. Panesis has used his network, experience, unique skillset and countless hours of hard work to make the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship a focal point for the entrepreneurial eco-system in the Conejo Valley. The center’s Hub101, a full-service co-workspace where startups can operate, collaborate and seek expert help, provides students the opportunity to connect with entrepreneurs to gain invaluable hands-on experience.

Teaching Award

Judith Richards, MBA Senior Lecturer Judith Richards received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Richards joined Cal Lutheran after a successful career working for a Fortune 100 corporation in the insurance sector as a VP for Marketing and Sales. She teaches both undergraduate and Executive MBA courses, both domestically and in our program in Austria. Richards is a published author on negotiation self-efficacy. Her students commend her for her ability to bring relevance to the classroom and for giving them the ability to seamlessly apply the knowledge and skills acquired in her classes to their work context.

Assistant Professor, Biology

The Leadership Awards Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, selected Anita Stone to receive its Outstanding Faculty Support Award. This award recognizes a faculty member who goes above and beyond to enrich the lives of students, making significant contributions to Cal Lutheran both in and out of the classroom. A native of Brazil, Stone is a behavioral ecologist specializing in Neotropical Primates. Her field research takes place in Eastern Amazonia, where she has studied the same population of squirrel monkeys since 2000. Stone’s undergraduate students accompany her to Brazil during the summer, to assist with her fieldwork and research.

About Cal Lutheran California Lutheran University has seen remarkable growth since its founding in 1959. The university keeps pace with the changing needs of students while remaining true to its mission: to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and committed to service and justice. Our Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) designation demonstrates the university's commitment to living out its mission within the changing context of student demographics.

The 225-acre main campus in Thousand Oaks is home to a dynamic liberal arts and sciences university with over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students from 48 countries representing a diversity of faiths and cultures. Cal Lutheran has other locations in Woodland Hills, Westlake Village, Oxnard and Santa Maria as well as Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley.

Cal Lutheran offers undergraduate, graduate and professional programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Management, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School

of Psychology, School for Professional and Continuing Studies and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Forty majors and 42 minors are offered in the traditional undergraduate program.

The Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals program offers degrees in nine majors. Graduate programs include doctorates in educational leadership, higher education leadership, clinical psychology and theology; and master’s degrees in education, psychology, business, economics, information technology, public policy and administration, and divinity.

Cal Lutheran is deeply involved in service to communities in Ventura County and beyond.

Examples include affordable counseling services, the Autism and Communication Center, professional development for nonprofit leaders, economic forecasting, a program to teach K-12 subjects using drama techniques, a community swimming pool, and NPR and local news through KCLU Radio.
