LEADING EDGE At California Lutheran University, our faculty remain focused on discovery and the future. They lay claim to their profession not as dispensers of cold facts, but as researchers and innovators who bring their subjects to life. They strive to instill in each generation of students the same sense of purpose they bring to their own work, the same desire for knowledge of what’s coming next, and the same need for greater understanding.

This is why our students are such active participants in their own education. They see their professors as both leaders and fellow learners who guide them into chosen fields where passion fuels their pursuits.

We admire our faculty for their boldness, for daring to illuminate and push the boundaries of knowledge past the conventional. They teach at the leading edge, helping students to become the creators and leaders of a future where our understanding of the world – and ourselves – will be greater than today.

Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Cal Lutheran students in all majors and specializations have opportunities to participate in research and creative scholarship, allowing them to make original contributions to their fields of study. Both in the classroom and outside of it, faculty members help students pursue their passions, discover their purpose and follow that purpose to transform their communities and the world.

The faculty members who mentor our undergraduate and graduate students are accomplished in all types of scholarship – laboratory research, creative works, and quantitative and qualitative explorations. This edition of At the Leading Edge features our Science Initiative on pages 20-21. I am pleased to highlight some of the ways our Science faculty are advancing research and exposing Cal Lutheran students to exceptional experiences: •

David Marcey (Biology), Kelly Owens (Sponsored Research), Diane Rodriguez-Kiino (Graduate School of Education) and Matthew Ward (Enrollment Management and Marketing) collaborated on a $4.6M HSI STEM grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop new programs and resources intended to increase retention of Hispanic and low-income students in STEM majors. All students will benefit from additional resources and tutoring available for science and math courses.

Sebastian Carron Montero (Physics) joined the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator at CERN, Switzerland in association with the UCSB experimental high energy physics group, working on the development of a new generation of particle detectors for CERN, as well as a variety of particle accelerator based searches for yet unidentified “dark matter.”

Michele LeBlanc (Exercise Science) gave two conference presentations involving three Cal Lutheran students at the Southwest Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine Conference.

•

Interdisciplinary research projects were completed by Michael Gagliardo (Mathematics) in an Arts and Mathematics presentation at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Atlanta, and Anita Stone (Biology) collaborated with Matthew Fienup (School of Management) on the article “Reproductive status affects the feeding ecology and social association patterns of female squirrel monkeys in an Amazonian rainforest.”

Chad Barber (Biology) provided opportunities for Cal Lutheran students to engage in science education experiences with funding received for Biological Science Exposure in the pre-school and K-12 School Setting.

•

Nate Carlson (Mathematics) was one of many faculty members who presented research internationally.

Dr. Carlson gave research presentations in Prague and in England.

•

Louise Kelly (Exercise Science) published four journal articles this year, with three of them co-authored

by Cal Lutheran undergraduates.

FACULTY AWARDS Michael Brint, D.Phil.

Outstanding Faculty Support Award Uyeno-Tseng Professor of International Studies, Political Science The Leadership Awards Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, selected Michael Brint to receive their Outstanding Faculty Support Award. From 2000 to 2005, Brint served as Cal Lutheran’s dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor of political science. In 2006, he was named the Uyeno-Tseng Professor of International Studies. As an alumnus of Balliol College, Oxford, he developed a study abroad program to Oxford University and Europe in 2008 and now serves as the program’s permanent faculty director. ​

Peter Carlson, Ph.D. Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year Assistant Professor, Religion Undergraduate seniors selected Peter Carlson as Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year. Carlson’s research has two primary areas: Christian religious history, and gender and religion. He studies religion in the late medieval and early modern eras, and his interest in gender began with his work on the constructions of masculinity and femininity in those periods. This historical work has expanded to include modern theologies of sexuality and gender construction primarily in Christianity, but also across religious traditions. He is director of the Gender and Women’s Studies Program. ​

Sarah Fischbach, Ph.D. School of Management Scholarship Award Assistant Professor, Management & Marketing The School of Management Advisory Council selected Sarah Fischbach as the recipient of the SOM Scholarship Award for outstanding achievement in professional scholarship. Fischbach is a marketing researcher who has focused on ethics, bribery, social media analytics, data automation and pedagogy. Her recent work on the ethics of native advertising and sponsored content has been widely accepted in the academic community. She received a 2016 Pacific Coast Business Times “40 Under 40” Award recognizing up-and-coming businessmen and women from the central coast.

Michael McCambridge, Ed.D. Outstanding Advisor Award Professor, College of Arts and Sciences/Graduate School of Education The faculty, staff and student members of the Leadership Awards Committee selected Michael McCambridge, director of Interdisciplinary Educational Studies, as the recipient of its Outstanding Advisor Award. With 47 years of teaching and administrative experience at the elementary, middle school, secondary and higher education levels, McCambridge creates opportunities for teachers and teachers-in-preparation to explore how teaching and learning theory informs good practices that result in academic, personal, social, and moral growth and development of K-12 students.

Edlyn Vallejo Peña, Ph.D. Graduate School of Education Service Award Associate Professor, Educational Leadership The Graduate School of Education selected Edlyn Vallejo Peña as the recipient of its annual Service Award. Peña is an award-winning researcher who studies social justice issues for students with disabilities, particularly autism, in the preschool through higher education pipeline. As co-director of the Autism and Communication Center and member of the federal Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, Peña is best known for her service to the autism community at the state and national level. She also is director of Cal Lutheran’s Doctoral Studies in Higher Education Leadership.

Mary Jo Shane, Ph.D. School of Management Service Award Assistant Professor, Management & Marketing In recognition of outstanding service to the university, the School of Management Advisory Council selected Mary Jo Shane as the recipient of the SOM Service Award. Shane teaches MBA courses in organization behavior, organization design, training and development, and applied international management. As director of International Student Success, she works closely with administrators, faculty and staff to develop and implement programs, projects and events to support international graduate student success within the School of Management.

Harry Starn Jr., M.S., CFA, CFP® School of Management Teaching Award Executive in Residence, Economics, Accounting & Finance Harry Starn received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Starn is a senior lecturer in Cal Lutheran’s School of Management and serves as director of the Financial Planning Program. He has been teaching, creating and refining online courses for the program since 2005. In May 2010, the United States Distance Learning Association presented him with the bronze award for Excellence in Distance Learning Teaching. He served on the CFP Board’s Council on Education (2012-2015) and was appointed chair in 2015.

Daniel Tillapaugh, Ph.D. Graduate School of Education Scholarship Award Assistant Professor, Counselor Education The Graduate School of Education selected Daniel Tillapaugh as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship. Tillapaugh’s research focuses on intersectionality and social contexts of higher education, college men and masculinities, LGBT issues in higher education, and leadership development and education. He has been recognized as an Emerging Scholar Designee by ACPA - College Student Educators International for his research pertaining to student development in higher education.

The Graduate School of Education selected Gail Uellendahl as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Uellendahl, who teaches a variety of courses focused on the theory and practice of counseling, received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2013. Her current research focuses on the experiences of first-generation students succeeding in graduate studies. She has made presentations about assessment and school counseling, critical incident stress management in K-12 settings, using student outcomes data for program development, and cultural proficiency in counselor education.

The Leadership Awards Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, selected Jennifer Twyford to receive their Outstanding Advisor Award for the second year in a row. Twyford has clinical expertise in child and adolescent assessment and research methodology. Her research interests include identification and prevention of disruptive behavioral problems in children and adolescents, in particular, school and juvenile justice system response to youth’s mental health needs and the prevention of school violence. Twyford received the Early Career Scholar Award from the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Study of School Psychology.

2017 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Karrolyne Fogel B.S., Santa Clara University Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin Associate professor of mathematics Karrolyne Fogel was honored last spring with the university’s highest award for excellence in teaching.

A dedicated teacher and supportive mentor, Fogel is committed to her students’ success and the idea that math is more fun when it makes sense. One student writes, “Dr. Fogel is the most amazing math professor I’ve probably ever had. She has wonderful communication skills. She is always there for students who are having trouble understanding something. Her office hours are made according to the student’s schedule and she is always willing to meet.” Another student writes, “Dr. Fogel really cares about her students and wants her students to be successful and enjoy learning.”

The President’s Award for Teaching Excellence was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community. When nominating Fogel for this award, one colleague wrote that she “has mastered the teacher-scholar model….

She has an extraordinary ability to inspire students to become global leaders, no matter their background, so that they can, in turn, touch the lives of and inspire countless others to follow their dreams.”

Fogel joined the Cal Lutheran faculty in 1998. She teaches upper division electives for math majors as well as classes for nonmajors. She educates aspiring elementary school teachers in the Interdisciplinary Educational Studies program and directs the Mathematics Single Subject Program for those planning to teach high school. In addition to serving as an academic adviser and mentor to math majors and minors, Fogel is adept at helping undeclared and transfer students identify and transition into fields of study.

She has served on the leadership team for the Pacific Coast Undergraduate Math Conference, which was recognized in 2015 by the American Mathematical Society as a Mathematics Program that Makes a Difference. She is a member of the governing board of the Southern California-Nevada section of the Mathematical Association of America.

Respected by her colleagues, she has been elected to many leadership positions on campus such as the Appointment Rank and Tenure Committee, the Faculty Executive Committee, and the Faculty Affairs and Development Committee. She served as chair of the Mathematics Department for eight years.

Fogel’s background is in algebraic number theory, and her current research is in graph labeling. She also enjoys the mathematics of voting and has mentored student projects in that topic and introduced the subject to local elementary school students.

Advancing the Sciences at Cal Lutheran At a time when the demand for science professionals is greater than ever, we have the unique opportunity to propel more Cal Lutheran graduates into science careers in research, healthcare, business, and academia – all doing work that will have an immediate and lasting impact on our world.

The Science Initiative campaign will allow us to build a new, modern science facility at the center of campus, giving us 90% more space for teaching and research to meet the demand and growth in our number of science majors. It will include new flexible lab spaces, collaborative research areas for students across disciplines, faculty offices, and new technology and equipment.

These are just a few of the ways Cal Lutheran is building momentum in the sciences: • As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), Cal Lutheran has been awarded a $4.6 million HSI STEM grant, allowing us to create the ALLIES in STEM program aimed at providing academic support to underrepresented students in STEM fields.

• A portion of the HSI STEM grant provides a matching grant opportunity of $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to establish the ALLIES in STEM Endowment in support of faculty-mentored summer research fellowships.

• Cal Lutheran’s new STEM Academy is a free, three-week summer bridge program designed to help future STEM students succeed by giving them a jump start on their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classes and research.
