LEADING EDGE At California Lutheran University, our faculty remain focused on discovery and the future. They lay claim to their profession not as dispensers of cold facts, but as researchers and innovators who bring their subjects to life. They strive to instill in each generation of students the same sense of purpose they bring to their own work, the same desire for knowledge of what’s coming next, and the same need for greater understanding. This is why our students are such active participants in their own education. They see their professors as both leaders and fellow learners who guide them into chosen fields where passion fuels their pursuits. We admire our faculty for their boldness, for daring to illuminate, to push the boundaries of knowledge past the conventional. Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs This edition of At the Leading Edge highlights the work of California Lutheran University faculty from June 2015 through May 2016. It includes conference presentations, journal articles, books, grants, exhibitions and performances, awards and appointments. A true hallmark of Cal Lutheran is our faculty’s commitment to inspiring students through one-on-one education, but – as this publication clearly shows – it is not at the expense of continued and expanded work in their fields. In fact, our faculty’s scholarship informs their teaching, making them also leaders in the classroom. The growing diversity of our student body resulted in Cal Lutheran’s recent designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution. As we actively seek ways to best serve the needs of our diverse student body, many of our faculty members are contributing to the body of research on diversity. FACULTY AWARDS Adina Nack Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year Ph.D., Sociology, University of Colorado, Boulder B.A., Social Ecology, University of California, Irvine Undergraduate seniors selected sociology professor Adina Nack as Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year. Nack is a medical sociologist whose award-winning research has focused on health conditions that typically stigmatize patients and how social psychology, social inequality, sexuality and gender factor into these illness experiences. Nack has published articles on her research and authored a book on women living with genital herpes and HPV infections. Her current research on maternal health care focuses on the physiological, social and psychological consequences of childbearing-related injuries and illnesses. ​

William Gartner School of Management Scholarship Award Ph.D., Business Administration, Business Policy, University of Washington MBA, Business Policy, University of Washington B.B.A., Accounting, University of Washington The School of Management (SOM) Advisory Council selected entrepreneurship professor William Gartner as the recipient of the SOM Scholarship Award for outstanding achievement in professional scholarship. Gartner’s current scholarship focuses on entrepreneurial behavior, the rhetoric of entrepreneurial practice, and the hermeneutics of possibility and failure. His book Entrepreneurship as Organizing was published in February 2016 by Edward Elgar.

Edward Julius School of Management Teaching Award CPA Certificate, State of Illinois M.S., Accounting, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania B.A., Business Administration, Rutgers University Accounting professor Edward Julius is the second recipient of the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. About to enter his 42nd year of college teaching, Julius is founder and adviser to Cal Lutheran’s student-run Accounting Association, as well as faculty mentor to the women’s softball and tennis teams. He has worked on numerous textbook projects over the years, published six crossword puzzle books, and written four books on mental math.

Paul Witman School of Management Service Award Ph.D., Information Systems and Technology, Claremont Graduate University M.S., Computer Information Systems, Claremont Graduate School B.S., Math/Computer Science, University of California, Los Angeles In recognition of outstanding service to the university and the community, the School of Management (SOM) Advisory Council selected information technology management associate professor Paul Witman as the recipient of the SOM Service Award. Witman’s research interests focus on information systems for churches and nonprofits, software development and reuse, information security, internet value for businesses, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Prior to joining the Cal Lutheran faculty, he held software engineering and management positions at Citibank and Digital Insight.

Heidi Coronado Graduate School of Education Service Award Ph.D., Educational Studies, Claremont Graduate University M.S., Counseling and Guidance and Pupil Personnel Services, California Lutheran University M.A., Educational Psychology, California State University, Northridge B.A., Cultural Psychology, California State University, Northridge The Graduate School of Education selected assistant professor of counselor education Heidi Coronado as the recipient of its annual Service Award. Coronado’s work includes resiliency and ethnic identity development in Latino/a and indigenous youth; mindfulness, indigenous epistemologies and wisdom traditions for youth empowerment; educational access and the impact of class, race, gender in education; critical and culturally relevant pedagogy; and indigenous/Latino/a mental health and healing practices. Through her work, she seeks to continue her activism and positive change in the educational system.

Michael McCambridge Graduate School of Education Teaching Award Ed.D., Private School Administration, University of San Francisco M.Ed., School Administration, Pepperdine University B.C.S., Interpersonal Communications, Ohio University The Graduate School of Education selected associate professor and Director of Interdisciplinary Educational Studies Michael McCambridge as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. With 44 years of teaching and administrative experience at the elementary, middle school, secondary and higher education levels, McCambridge creates opportunities for teachers and teachers-in-preparation to explore how teaching and learning theory informs good practices that result in academic, personal, social, and moral growth and development of K-12 students.

Diane Rodriguez-Kiino Graduate School of Education Scholarship Award Ph.D., Education Policy, University of Southern California M.Ed., College Student Personnel Services, University of Southern California B.A., Psychology, San Diego State University The Graduate School of Education selected Diane Rodriguez-Kiino, assistant professor of higher education leadership, as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship. Rodriguez-Kiino has published on topics covering transfer students, women, and students of color in education. She currently serves as a senior researcher for the Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges. During the 2014-15 academic year, Rodriguez-Kiino taught courses on diversity in American higher education as a Fulbright Scholar in Japan. 5.

Graduating seniors in the Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals Program selected assistant professor of psychology Ariana Young as Instructor of the Year. Young is a social psychologist interested in the social nature of the self. Her research investigates how the self is influenced by the actual, imagined and implied presence of other people. She explores how social surrogates (i.e., symbolic social bonds) including books, movies, television shows, celebrities, fictional characters, Facebook, Twitter and comfort foods affect how people think and feel about themselves.

2016 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Daniel Meredith Geeting D.M.A., University of Oregon Conducting Certificate, Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria M.M., University of Southern California B.A., California State University, Fresno Dan Geeting, a longtime professor of music at Cal Lutheran, was honored last spring with the 2016 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community. Geeting came to Cal Lutheran in 1984 with an extensive background in conducting, music theory, music history and woodwind performance. During his 32 years at Cal Lutheran, he has taught several undergraduate courses but has specialized in music appreciation in Core 21 and upper division music history for majors. He has conducted the University Symphony and Wind Ensemble as well as joint music and theater department productions. An accomplished musician, he has performed at least one solo recital on clarinet or saxophone each year. He has been elected to multiple leadership positions on the Faculty Affairs and Development Committee; the Appointment, Rank and Tenure Committee; and the General Education sub-committee of the Educational Policy and Planning Committee. In recent years, he has served as chair of the Artists and Speakers Committee, which brings internationally renowned performers and speakers to campus. Geeting is a demanding professor with a high regard for his students. As one student writes, “Dr. Geeting has been my absolute favorite professor at CLU. He is strict, but that is because he knows his students can perform challenging music very well. He pushed me past my comfort zone and made me feel confident when playing solos. He calls students out on their mistakes, but does so in an encouraging way. He tells students that rehearsal is the best place to make mistakes and lets us know that it is okay to mess up, which I think is a crucial part of being a great professor and encouraging musicians to play out.” Students continue to rely on Geeting for advice and encouragement after graduation, and he has written countless letters of recommendation and made numerous phone calls in support of those seeking employment. His former students are currently performing in major ensembles and national touring companies, and teaching at the elementary, secondary and university levels. Geeting holds a bachelor’s degree in music, a master’s and doctorate in clarinet performance and a certificate in conducting.
