Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Cal Lutheran students in all majors and specializations have opportunities to participate in research and creative scholarship, allowing them to make original contributions to their fields of study. Both in the classroom and outside of it, faculty members help students pursue their passions, discover their purpose and follow that purpose to transform their communities and the world.

The faculty members who mentor our undergraduates and graduate students are accomplished in all types of scholarship – laboratory research, creative works, and quantitative and qualitative explorations.

Students involved in their research programs go on to publish results and co-present with faculty members at professional conferences throughout the country. Some recent examples include: • Steven Hawkins and Michele LeBlanc (Exercise Science) presented “Functional movement biomechanics differences between individuals with femoralacetabular impingement and osteoarthritis” with Bryce Truver ’14, Marc Mirisch, D.P.T., MBA ’11, and another co-author at the National American College of Sports Medicine Conference.

FACULTY AWARDS Jonathan Cordero Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year Ph.D., Sociology, University of California, Santa Barbara B.A., University of California, Berkeley

Undergraduate seniors selected assistant professor of sociology Jonathan Cordero as Cultural Diversity Professor of the Year. In much of his work—teaching, research and community service—Cordero focuses on the perspectives and experiences of subordinate social groups, especially racial and ethnic minorities. In his courses in particular, Cordero emphasizes bringing about positive social change by changing the social structures that cause social inequality and injustice. ​

Maura Martindale Graduate School of Education Teaching Award Ed.D., Educational Leadership, University of Southern California M.E.D., Master of the Education of the Deaf, Smith College B.A., History and Elementary Education, Annhurst College The Graduate School of Education selected associate professor Maura Martindale as the recipient of their annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Martindale is the director of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program and chair of the Department of Learning and Teaching. Her specialization is in teaching spoken language to children with hearing loss and parent education. Martindale led programs at John Tracy Clinic for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and in the USC graduate program.

Nancy Myers Graduate School of Education Service Award M.A., Curriculum and Instruction, California State University, Los Angeles B.A., Multicultural Perspectives in Education, University of California, Santa Cruz In recognition of outstanding service to the university and the community, the Graduate School of Education selected senior lecturer Nancy Myers as the recipient of its Service Award. Myers has served as the director for the California Reading and Literature Project since 2008. She is responsible for coordinating high quality professional development in the area of student literacy for teachers in public K-12 schools across Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Kern counties. This project works heavily with the English Language Learner population and focuses on improving low-achieving schools.

Edlyn Vallejo Peña Graduate School of Education Scholarship Award Ph.D., Higher Education, University of Southern California M.Ed., Postsecondary Education and Student Affairs, University of Southern California B.A., Psychology, University of California, Santa Cruz The Graduate School of Education selected Edlyn Peña, assistant professor of higher education leadership, as the recipient of their annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship. Peña’s research currently focuses on social justice issues for ethnic/racial minorities and students with disabilities, particularly autism, in higher education. In 2015, she was recognized by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) as one of the top 25 most influential scholars for disability services.

Harry Domicone School of Management Service Award Ph.D., Strategic Management, University of Cincinnati MBA, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo B.G.S., Ohio University In recognition of outstanding service to the university, the School of Management (SOM) Advisory Council selected business administration professor Harry Domicone as the recipient of the SOM Service Award. Domicone’s academic content area is strategic management, and his professional and personal interests relate to global strategy, marketing and managing services, entrepreneurship, and international higher education. He currently serves as the SOM director of International Relations.

Valeria Makarova School of Management Teaching Award MBA, International Business, California Lutheran University Ph.D., Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University In recognition of outstanding achievement in teaching, the School of Management (SOM) Advisory Council selected assistant professor of marketing Valeria Makarova as the recipient of the SOM Teaching Award. Makarova is working to bridge the gap between industry and academia, and helping to grow successful businesses by identifying, developing and marketing innovative technologies. Her professional interests also include support and promotion of sustainable and socially responsible business practices.

Vlad Vaiman School of Management Scholarship Award Ph.D., International Management, University of St. Gallen MBA, Strategic Management and Human Resource Management, University of Wyoming M.S., Mechanical Engineering, Russian State Academy of Oil and Gas, Moscow The School of Management (SOM) Advisory Council selected international management professor Vlad Vaiman as the recipient of the SOM Scholarship Award for outstanding achievement in professional scholarship. Vaiman’s research interests include issues of both organizational behavior and international management, and more specifically, matters of cultural differences and their influences on leadership, motivation and talent management in multinational companies. He currently serves as SOM associate dean and MBA program director.

Graduating seniors in the Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals Program selected visiting lecturer Timothy Weaver as Instructor of the Year. After a 40-year career in the banking industry, Weaver joined the Cal Lutheran business faculty in 2011. His expertise is in finance and lending. He consults with the Valley Economic Development Corporation as chief credit officer relative to government guaranteed loans (SBA and State of California).

2015 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Susan Murphy Professor of Management Ph.D., University of Illinois, Chicago MBA, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas B.B.A., Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas School of Management professor Susan Murphy was honored last spring with the 2015 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community.

Murphy, the chair of the Department of Management and Marketing, came to Cal Lutheran in 2002 with a strong background in applied behavioral science. Her research focuses primarily on social loafing and the impact of gender and cultural diversity on work group processes.

Murphy is an organized, focused and hardworking professor who teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in human resources management and organizational behavior and development. She is an officer in the Cal Lutheran chapter of Sigma Beta Delta, the international honor society for business, management and administration. Admired and respected by her colleagues, she has been elected to many faculty leadership positions, including the Faculty Executive Committee, the Faculty Affairs and Development Committee, and the Appointment, Rank and Tenure Committee. She also served as Director of Undergraduate Programs for the School of Management for five years.

An engaging professor, Murphy has a natural rapport with students, who say they appreciate the respect she has for them and their varying viewpoints. One student writes, “Professor Murphy is a kind, personable, interactive, enthusiastic professor who allows the students to be open during the class. Class discussion is highly encouraged, as well as varying opinions.” Another student writes, “Dr. Murphy is a fantastic instructor, and a wonderful person. I cannot express how much I have appreciated her as a professor, mentor, and role model.” Murphy shows concern for her students not only while they are at Cal Lutheran, but also as they move into their careers.

She spearheads the university’s annual Paths to Professionalism event that helps students transition to the full-time work environment.

Her interest in international issues has been served by teaching at the International Business School of Styria in Graz, Austria, in a joint MBA program with Cal Lutheran, as well as leading undergraduate travel courses to Europe to meet with executives in several countries.

Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA from Texas Tech University and a doctorate in human resources management from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP

Cal Lutheran provides many opportunities for faculty-mentored research and creative scholarship, enabling students to explore issues in their fields of study and make original intellectual contributions.

At Cal Lutheran, we mentor students and introduce them firsthand to the scholarly processes of different fields of study. Mentoring by faculty and the fostering of creativity allow students to go beyond what is taught in the classroom and to apply their knowledge to specific questions of interest to them. While carrying out research and creative scholarship, students develop discipline-specific skills and gain an understanding of issues, methods and leaders in their chosen fields. Ultimately, the experience builds critical thinking skills, a culture of intellectual curiosity, confidence and professionalism, and important personal traits, such as tenacity and focus, that are helpful in every facet of life.

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship (OURCS) supports scholarly projects in every field of study including the natural sciences, math and computing, social and behavioral sciences, humanities and creative arts. OURCS offers competitive summer fellowships to undergraduates for full-time original research and creative projects under a faculty mentor.

Funds are also provided to help students travel throughout the year to present their scholarly work at conferences.

Both undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to present their research at Cal Lutheran’s annual weeklong Festival of Scholars, which showcases the scholarly work of students from throughout the university.

Scholarly work may include traditional research, creative work and the application of theory to real-life situations. These highquality projects reflect months or even years of focused work with faculty mentors, and in many cases the results have been presented at professional conferences and accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Faculty-mentored research and creative scholarship promote a powerful learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students and help to bridge the gap between educational concepts and real-world situations.

Through these endeavors, Cal Lutheran students are able to pursue their passions, discover their purpose, and grow as scholars in their chosen fields of study.

Qualitative social science research projects encourage students to get involved in social issues by offering a tool to analyze them and forcing the students to interact with those who are directly affected by the issues. Research projects help students develop skills, values and attitudes that cannot be easily developed in conventional class settings.

Too often students think all the answers are already in the textbooks, especially in the sciences. Getting students to be comfortable seeking out what is not known and letting it drive their learning in the lab is my goal in mentoring students.
