LEADING EDGE At California Lutheran University, our faculty remain focused on discovery and the future. They lay claim to their profession not as dispensers of cold facts, but as researchers and innovators who bring their subjects to life. They strive to instill in each generation of students the same sense of purpose they bring to their own work, the same desire for knowledge of what’s coming next, and the same need for greater understanding. This is why our students are such active participants in their own education. They see their professors as both leaders and fellow learners who guide them into chosen fields where passion fuels their pursuits. We admire our faculty for their boldness, for daring to illuminate and push the boundaries of knowledge past the conventional. They teach at the leading edge, helping students to become the creators and leaders of a future where our understanding of the world – and ourselves – will be greater than today. Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Restrictions made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic presented continued challenges during the 2020-2021 academic year. The Cal Lutheran faculty didn’t allow obstacles to curtail serving students and the university or sharing scholarly works in their fields. Although some research was modified, faculty members found creative ways to continue their work, with many publishing, presenting at virtual conferences, or finding ways to hold online performances. This edition of At the Leading Edge is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Cal Lutheran faculty from June 2020 through May 2021. It includes conference presentations, journal articles, books, grants, exhibitions, performances, awards, and appointments. At a time when theaters and concert halls had to shut their doors to audiences, several faculty members presented impactful performances virtually, including the following:
• Kenneth Gardner had his play The Enchanted Lake (El Lago Encantado) performed by the LightBox Theatre Company for Youth in Turlock, California, under the direction of I. Ramirez in April and May 2021.
• Wyant Morton conducted two concerts: Virtual Alma Mater Project, performed by the Virtual Alumni
Choir comprising alumni from the classes of 1964 to 2020; and Virtual Mini-Christmas Concert, including performances by Cal Lutheran Choral Ensembles.
Other faculty members were invited to present their research on a variety of important topics at virtual conferences, including:
• Shauna Hannan presented “Exodus, Come Out” at the International Conference on Sexuality, Gender and Queer Theology at the Jakarta Theological Seminary.
• Emma Hooper presented “Mother-Child Contingent Emotional Responses, Maternal Depressive Symptoms, and Child Problem Behaviors: Associations in Preschool Years” with X. Feng, Q. Wu, S. Ku and G. Gerhardt at the Sixth International Congress of Clinical Health Psychology in Children and Adolescents Annual Conference.
• LaVerne Seales and Sheridan Wigginton presented “Identity Construction: Representation and Othering of
People of African Descent in Latin American Children’s Literature” with M. Meléndez Moré at the International Conference on Children’s Studies organized by the London Centre for Interdisciplinary Research. Seales also presented “An Autoethnographic Approach to Race and Ethnicity in the U.S.: An Afro-Latina Spanish Language Instructor's Journey” at the International Conference on Social and Cultural Anthropology in Cairo, Egypt, and “Simbología del búho en: 'Los anteojos' y 'El búho que dejó de latir' de Enrique Jaramillo Levi” at the XXVII Congreso Internacional de Literatura y Estudios Hispánicos.
• Bethany Simmons presented “How to Untangle Ourselves: Cybernetic Action for Social Change” with A. Albrite, R. Jardine, et al., at a workshop for the American Society for Cybernetics during the 2020 Global Conversations Annual International Conference in London, England.
• Kirsi Stjerna presented “On Being Lutheran: Spirituality” at the Lutheran World Federation international webinar. • Vlad Vaiman presented “Revitalizing Macro Talent Management (MTM) — Views from the Futurist, Pragmatist and Idealist, PDW” with S. Khilji and I. Tarique at the 2020 Academy of Management annual conference and “The Future of Work: Automation and Employment” at the Fifth St. Petersburg International Labor Forum in Russia.
I am continually impressed with the quality of work by and the ingenuity of our faculty. Finding virtual venues allowed faculty members to increase the university’s outreach and engage audiences in ways they might not have been able to do otherwise. I invite you to read through this booklet to see for yourself the range of successes achieved by Cal Lutheran’s faculty in 2020-2021.
Leanne Neilson, PsyD Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
2021 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Rafaela Fiore Urízar, PhD Rafaela Fiore Urízar, chair of the Department of Languages and Cultures and associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies, received the 2021 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community. Fiore Urízar received her BA in literature from Universidad Católica “Nuestra Señora de la Asunción” in Paraguay; her MA in Spanish languages and literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and her PhD in contemporary Latin American literature from the University of Chicago. A native of Paraguay, she is an energetic and interesting professor who, in her decade at Cal Lutheran, has shared her passion for literature, prompting many of her students to pursue advanced studies of Spanish and Latin American culture. “It is clear that Dr. Rafaela Fiore Urízar is an inspirational and transformative teacher who personifies excellence in teaching,” President Lori E. Varlotta said in an online video for the virtual 2021 Honors Recognition. She guides students majoring in Spanish in developing research projects, submitting them to conferences and presenting them. She also helps students showcase their research in applications for graduate programs and employment. The Thousand Oaks resident co-developed two interdisciplinary travel seminars. She taught “Treasures of Peru” with a history professor and “Barcelona Through the Looking Glass” with a mathematics professor. She also has helped students find internships in areas that interest them, such as with the Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project in Oxnard and Thousand Oaks’ Glenwood Elementary School, where 95% of the students are Spanish-speaking. Fiore Urízar mentored Marina Álvarez, a Simi Valley resident who graduated in 2015 with majors in Spanish and global studies, in studying Latina graffiti artists in Los Angeles and publishing her findings in a peer-reviewed cultural studies journal. Álvarez earned a master’s in Latin American studies at Loyola University Chicago and a second master’s in museum and exhibition studies at the University of Illinois Chicago and served as a 2019 Smithsonian Latino Museum Studies Fellow. Fiore Urízar, who gave her acceptance speech in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Guarani, said she hopes students leave Cal Lutheran “with a greater sense of wonder and a desire to inquire and to value knowledge for its own sake.”
PROVOST DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARDS The Provost Distinguished Scholar Award was developed to further the building of a community of scholars at Cal Lutheran. Each year the award is granted to two faculty members, one undergraduate faculty and one graduate faculty, who have demonstrated significant achievement in research or creative work. The Faculty Awards Committee receives nominations and selects the award winners. The award is funded by a gift from the estate of Pamela M. Jolicoeur, who was provost at Cal Lutheran from 1993 to 2004.
Kirstie Hettinga, PhD Associate Professor, Communication Kirstie Hettinga’s research is closely entwined with her teaching and her work as the faculty adviser for Cal Lutheran’s student newspaper, The Echo. In recent years, she has done extensive research on the formation of communities of practice in student newsrooms, the role of accuracy in student media, and, notably, the development of Spanish-language student media. Since joining Cal Lutheran in 2013, she has published 14 peer-reviewed articles and five conference proceedings, and has presented research 18 times at national and international conferences. Hettinga works with students on their own independent research related to her areas of interest. She has mentored multiple students on research related to news media retractions, newspaper corrections, and a change in editing structures at The New York Times. Her students have presented their papers at national conferences and had their research accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Hettinga’s 2018 paper presentation “Errors and corrections in digital news content,” with Alyssa Appelman, PhD, was recognized at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference with the Open Competition Award (second place) in the Mass Communication and Society Division, one of the largest divisions in AEJMC.

“My desire as a scholar is to engage in research and scholarship that actually has a direct impact on making positive change in higher education and student affairs, and drives new conversations in the field,” said Tillapaugh. “I am intentional about presenting my research at scholarly conferences, but also ones geared towards practitioners. This is inherently important to me because I do not want to present in a vacuum or a void.”

Graduate School of Education Dean Michael Hillis writes, “So often scholars in academia can be seen as ‘out of touch’ and ‘disengaged’ with the general public. Yet what Dr. Tillapaugh is attesting to is that his work is based on engagement, giving voice to others, and improving the lives of so many around him. A laudable effort indeed.” Hillis adds that Tillapaugh not only “sets the bar for his colleagues within the GSOE, but he is also a model for the entire campus of an active, engaged and professionally recognized scholar.”

Dan Tillapaugh is chair of the Department of Counselor Education in the Graduate School of Education. He has been recognized as an Emerging Scholar by ACPA — College Student Educators International for his research, which focuses largely on the intersections of gender and sexuality in college student development. Since publication of his book Men and Masculinities: Theoretical Foundations and Promising Practices for Supporting College Men’s Development, he has given invited presentations at Duke University and Tulane University.

Recently, she received the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for her work in facilitating a collaboration between the Communication and Languages and Cultures Departments to develop and implement a Spanish media minor. This new minor is a multilingual, diverse program that will position Cal Lutheran students to succeed in a global society.

Kirstie Hettinga and Sheridan Wigginton received the Dean’s Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for their work in developing and implementing the Spanish Language Media minor. This collaboration between the Communication and Languages and Cultures departments produced a multilingual, diverse program tailored to the practical needs of our students. The new minor positions students to succeed in the global economy as well as in the competitive job market.

Helen Lim, PhD Professor, Criminology and Criminal Justice
Helen Lim was selected to receive the Dean’s Award for Innovative Pedagogy. Lim embodies the mission and core values of Cal Lutheran. She continually pushes students to see the real-world implications of what they are learning and to envision how they can use their knowledge to improve our communities and to better our criminal justice system. She incorporates service and experiential learning opportunities in all of her courses. Lim is passionate about mentoring students, developing ethically-minded leaders, and helping students discover their purpose.

Monica Gracyalny and Jean Sandlin received the Dean’s Award for Scholarship and Creative Work for the collaborative Social Media Research Team. Their research combines Sandlin’s expertise in public relations with Gracyalny’s expertise in interpersonal communication to investigate the effectiveness of social media apologies by public figures, an area of study that is increasingly important as our mediated and interpersonal communication continues to overlap in the digital realm. Their research students have gone on to graduate school, presented their work at conferences, and published their work in peer-reviewed journals.

Adina Nack and Paloma Vargas received the Dean’s Award for Service for their joint work on the campus’s COVID-19 response including their summer presentation. The science-based information they provided helped the campus community make informed decisions about safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cal Lutheran community benefited greatly from their work, service and educational efforts during this difficult time.

Edlyn Vallejo Peña, recipient of the Graduate School of Education’s annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship, is an award-winning researcher who studies ways to support autistic students in the preschool through higher education pipeline. Her edited books, Communication Alternatives in Autism (2019) and Leaders Around Me (2019), feature prominent autistic individuals who advocate for communication and inclusion rights. As director of the Autism and Communication Center, her service to the autism community has reached international audiences. Her work aligns with the mission of the Graduate School of Education in forwarding and centering community needs and social justice within education.
Service Award
Gail Uellendahl, PhD Professor, Counselor Education Gail Uellendahl received the Graduate School of Education’s Service Award for her outstanding leadership in creating and implementing the Critical Incident Response program. This program provided training for counselors and others to respond in critical emergency situations on school campuses. The program brought awareness to the need for this support in our educational and Cal Lutheran community. In addition, Uellendahl spearheaded participation in the National First-Generation College Student Day, collaborating with university faculty, staff and students to provide resources and share what it means to be a first-gen student.
Teaching Award
Angela Rowley, MS Lecturer, Counselor Education Angela Rowley received the Graduate School of Education’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching because early in the pandemic, she went beyond simply transposing courses to a new format. She transformed courses and met the extraordinary needs of her students through creative pedagogy, individual coaching, and modeling the person-centered approach that candidates will bring to their counseling practice. She also developed and delivered an enrichment program for first-year students at the Oxnard Center, providing additional counseling training and practice between terms. Rowley lives out the mission of the institution through her consistent care and compassion for our students.
SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Scholarship Award
Chia-Li Chien, PhD Assistant Professor Chia-Li Chien received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship. Chien is director of the Financial Planning Program, holds a doctorate in financial planning and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) as well as a Project Management Professional (PMP®). She is a frequent speaker at national conferences and has published three award-winning books, including her most recent, Enhancing Retirement Success Rates in the United States. Chien serves on the boards of various national financial service associations.
Service Award
Dan Hamilton, PhD Associate Professor Dan Hamilton received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Service. Hamilton has served on a number of formal university-level committees such as the Graduate and Professionals Education Committee, Information Technology Advisory Committee, Institutional Research Board, as well as on several School of Management-specific committees. He has also built and masterfully run one of the School of Management’s highest quality graduate programs, the M.S. in Quantitative Economics. He is the silent force behind one of the most visible academic centers at the School of Management, the Center for Economic Research and Forecasting (CERF), building econometric models that have earned him a stellar reputation in Southern California and beyond.

of Psychology, School for Professional and Continuing Studies and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Forty majors and 42 minors are offered in the traditional undergraduate program. The Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals program offers degrees in nine majors. Graduate programs include doctorates in educational leadership, higher education leadership, clinical psychology and theology; and master’s degrees in education, psychology, business, economics, information technology, public policy and administration, and divinity. Cal Lutheran is deeply involved in service to communities in Ventura County and beyond. Examples include affordable counseling services, the Autism and Communication Center, professional development for nonprofit leaders, economic forecasting, a program to teach K-12 subjects using drama techniques, a community swimming pool, and NPR and local news through KCLU Radio.
