Leanne Neilson Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs This edition of At the Leading Edge highlights the work of California Lutheran University faculty from June 2018 through May 2019. It includes conference presentations, journal articles, books, grants, exhibitions and performances, awards, and appointments. As you'll see, the work of our faculty aligns well with Cal Lutheran’s strategic plan focusing on Inclusion, Innovation, and Investment.

At Cal Lutheran, we are committed to ensuring equitable outcomes for all students, with a particular focus on providing services for students of diverse backgrounds and students who are the first in their families to attend college. I am pleased to highlight some of the ways our faculty are supporting efforts toward equity and inclusion: • Trudy Arriaga gave over 75 presentations on “Opening Doors for Equity” at conferences around the country.

• Michele Dean served as an organizer for the Oxnard Union High School District Equity Conference.

• E dlyn Peña published a report on “Making disability visible in higher education research: Documenting qualitative, quantitative and theoretical issues and solutions.”

• Moses Penumaka served on the Task Force for Strategic Diversity for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

• M el Spence and Tymika Wesley published an article on “Preparing Teacher Candidates for Diverse Learners: Are We Doing Enough?” in Allies for Education (A4E).

• Dan Tillapaugh published an article on “Structural Challenges Affecting the Experiences of Public University LGBT Services Graduate Assistants” in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.

• P aloma Vargas, Andrea Sell, Lorenzo Ramirez, and Janet Awokoya gave a presentation on “Bridging for Student Success: Cross-program collaboration to support underrepresented students in research activities” at the Biannual Council for Undergraduate Research Conference.

Here are some examples of ways our faculty are advancing innovation: • D azhi Chong published “Research on Institutional Innovation of China's Green Insurance Investment” in the Journal of Industrial Integration and Management: Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

• J amshid Damooei presented “Looking into Practical Solutions to End Poverty: Is this a Pipedream or the Essential Element of a Sustainable and Harmonious World?” at the Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative (GCGI) and School of Economic Science (SES) Fourth Joint Conference in Tuscany, Italy.

• M atthew Fienup gave a presentation on “Challenges, Innovations, Solutions” at the Ventura County Housing Conference.

• C hris Njunge was awarded a $1,000 grant from the Community Leaders Association to plan and host a daylong conference/festival to discuss and celebrate the link between diversity and innovation.

• M ary Jo Shane gave a presentation on “Developing cultural intelligence for adaptability, resilience and innovation” at the BCCIE Summer Conference in Vancouver, Canada.

Cal Lutheran faculty have contributed to the focus on investment through the attainment of more than 8 million dollars in grants and contracts in the 2018-19 academic year. Grants were awarded from a variety of funders including the Latino Donor Collaborative, Ventura Council of Governments, Conejo Valley Unified School District, American Red Cross, National Science Foundation, Amgen Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education Title V Developing HSI grant.

I continue to be impressed with the quality of work by Cal Lutheran faculty, from theatre and music presentations, to artistic exhibitions, to an array of conference presentations and journal articles. I invite you to read through this booklet to see for yourself the range of activities achieved by Cal Lutheran’s faculty in 2018-19.

2019 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence Haco Hoang BA, Political Science, University of California, Santa Barbara PhD, Political Science, Boston University Political science professor Haco Hoang received the 2019 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was created in 1995 to recognize professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the rest of the university community.

With research interests in civic engagement and environmental justice, Hoang teaches courses in international relations, global studies and public policy. She holds a PhD in political science with an emphasis in international relations from Boston University and has been a Fulbright Scholar and a visiting research associate at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. She was a policy analyst in Los Angeles on education and budget issues, and has been a policy consultant for the city on projects related to female gangs, youth civic engagement, and neighborhood councils.

Since joining the Cal Lutheran faculty in 2005, Hoang has worked to engage students in experiential learning. She assigns class projects that require students to observe what is happening in the community, interview people, collect data and propose solutions. In her advocacy class, they learn strategies to promote change for their chosen causes. She mentors students on their own research and brings them in to work on her projects.

“I have learned over my nearly 20-year career that the key to teaching is building strong relationships with students, inside and outside of the classroom,” Hoang said. “Without a rapport with students, it doesn’t matter how prepared I am to teach or even the course content.”

Hoang has worked with both undergraduate and graduate students in collaborative multidisciplinary research into the neurobehavioral effects of pesticide exposure in Oxnard, farmworkers’ awareness of health-related risks, and promoting social justice in low-income communities of Ventura County, with funding from the California Wellness Foundation. She and students have presented their work together at conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

She spent the last academic year on sabbatical working with a student to develop recommendations on improving access to health-related resources for communities exposed to pollution and other environmental risks.

The Vietnamese-born scholar has extensive experience in bringing about change. Her policy work and research have been highlighted by the Women’s Policy Journal of the Harvard-Kennedy School of Government, Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education and SAGE Publications.

“She has an impressive record as a scholar with numerous publications and presentations, but more importantly, she’s a dedicated teacher committed to her students and their learning,” said President Chris Kimball.

PROVOST DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARDS The Provost Distinguished Scholar Award is presented annually to two Cal Lutheran faculty members (one undergraduate faculty and one graduate faculty) who have demonstrated significant achievement in research or creative work. The award is funded by a gift from the estate of Pamela M. Jolicoeur who was Provost at Cal Lutheran from 1993 to 2004.

Louise Kelly, PhD Associate Professor, Exercise Science Louise Kelly was one of six children in her family and one of three who were physically active. When she looked around her rural town in Ireland, she saw the same divide between active and sedentary lifestyles. And with the pace of globalization picking up in the 1980s and 1990s, she saw this problem and the associated health outcomes getting worse.

“The minute we got a fast food chain from America, obesity rates started to increase,” she said.

Young kids were getting bigger more quickly, and fewer were playing sports or biking to school. Cable television and cell phones arrived, contributing to more young people being sedentary. “With that, you started to see rising levels of obesity, high blood pressure in kids, and the creeping in of Type 2 diabetes – not quite in kids yet, but in people who shouldn’t be getting it.”

An expert in pediatric exercise physiology who trained in Glasgow, Scotland, Kelly researches the links between inactivity and health disorders ranging from diabetes to obesity-related cancers to depression. At the May 2018 International Obesity and Diabetes Meeting in Australia, her keynote titled “Pediatric obesity, is it really a major public health crisis?” won the outstanding keynote presentation award.

While conducting her research at Cal Lutheran, Kelly invites diverse students to join her in asking why young people are inactive and how to stage culturally sensitive interventions.

“My whole passion is to try and prevent these young kids from getting these diseases that are going to ruin the rest of their lives,” she said.

Kelly teaches that “everything’s experiential.” Kids aren’t impressed to hear that a soda has 14 grams of sugar, but react when they see those 14 grams measured out. “To change their trajectories,” she said, give them reasons to alter their diets, involve their families, and start early.

When she was 14, her Lutheran youth group showed a documentary about the exploitation of sugar cane workers in the Dominican Republic. That film screening, said Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, “shaped my life.” She grew fascinated with hidden connections between lives like hers and those of impoverished people, connections between her breakfast or new blouse and someone else’s suffering. She learned how those connections are obscured to keep comfortable people from noticing global systems of oppression.

Moe-Lobeda’s writing is grounded in Lutheran theology but also explicitly addressed to readers outside of that tradition.

“Religion,” she said, “isn’t on Earth just to serve religious people. It’s on Earth to serve ways of living where the whole web of life can flourish and all people can have lives with justice and joy.”

As an ecofeminist Lutheran theologian, Moe-Lobeda has become a leading voice against “climate colonialism,” a system that places the heaviest burdens of global climate change on communities that are not responsible for it. The author of six books and dozens of chapters and journal articles, she may be best known for Resisting Structural Evil: Love as EcologicalEconomic Vocation (2013). Written in direct and forceful prose, the book presents a vision of today’s economic, racial and ecological injustice and offers a framework for turning away from it.

Before joining the academy, Moe-Lobeda forged personal relationships abroad and began to hold herself accountable to the communities where she learned liberation theology and other forms of wisdom. She worked in Honduras for two years, earned a master’s degree in social work, and went on to develop university-level experiential learning programs. Twentyfive years after graduating from St. Olaf College, she defended her dissertation on economic globalization and Lutheran ethics at Union Theological Seminary.

Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, PhD

FACULTY AWARDS Ali Akbari, PhD Professor, School of Management School of Management Teaching Award Ali Akbari received the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Akbari teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in the subject areas of economics and statistics. An early adopter of project-based learning, he has created an approach to teaching that combines theoretical foundations in statistics and economics with the practice of problem-solving in business and economics.

His courses balance rigor with relevance, and he truly cares for his students’ progress in the classroom and beyond. As an area coordinator for quantitative methods, he readily shares his expertise with new colleagues.

Trudy T. Arriaga, EdD Associate Dean of Equity and Outreach, Graduate School of Education Graduate School of Education Service Award Trudy Arriaga was selected by the Graduate School of Education as the recipient of its annual Service Award.

Arriaga works to establish and maintain ongoing partnerships with K-12 schools in our community. She served as the first female superintendent of the Ventura Unified School District for 14 years. A sought-after speaker and author on cultural proficiency, Arriaga has focused her life work on the fundamental belief that the educational system has tremendous capability and responsibility to open doors for all students. Her leadership focuses on core values that ensure equity, access, and opportunity for every child.

Michael Brint, D.Phil.

Uyeno-Tseng Professor of International Studies, Political Science Outstanding Faculty Support Award The Leadership Awards Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, selected Michael Brint to receive their Outstanding Faculty Support Award. From 2000 to 2005, Brint served as Cal Lutheran's Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a Professor of Political Science. In 2006, he was named the UyenoTseng Professor of International Studies. As an alumnus of Balliol College, Oxford, he developed a study abroad program to Oxford University and Europe in 2008 and now serves as the program's permanent faculty director.

Loredana Carson, MPPA Lecturer, Master of Public Policy and Administration Program School of Management Service Award In recognition of outstanding service to the university and community, Loredana Carson was selected to receive the School of Management Advisory Council’s Service Award. Her service to the university includes supporting the School of Management’s initiative to align with PRIME (Principles of Responsible Management Education), by creating a competition for students to present their own scholarly work. In addition, she is the faculty advisor for the campus chapter of PIHRA, a club for students interested in human resource issues. For the community, she coordinates a continuing education program for government employees in areas related to leadership, ethics, and supervisory skills.

Haco Hoang, PhD Professor, Political Science Diversity Educator Award The Campus Diversity Initiative selected Haco Hoang as the recipient of their inaugural Diversity Educator Award, which honors a faculty member whose curriculum, teaching style, and role modeling has furthered students’ understanding and appreciation of diversity, inclusion, and equity. Hoang teaches courses related to international relations, global studies, and public policy. Her research interests include civic engagement and environmental justice.

Sabith Khan, PhD Assistant Professor, Master of Public Policy and Administration Program School of Management Scholarship Award Sabith Khan was selected to receive the School of Management Advisory Council’s Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship. Khan’s research agenda examines how the rapid changes of the “Fourth Industrial Revolution,” such as big data and artificial intelligence, impact the realm of nonprofit organizations, technologies and governance systems. As a scholar-practitioner, with expertise in American philanthropy, civil society, international development, religion and culture, Khan brings exciting perspectives to the School of Management. Khan is completing his next book on remittances - focusing on four countries - USA, Mexico, India and Saudi Arabia, to be published by Routledge Press.

Nancy Myers, MA Senior Lecturer, Learning and Teaching Graduate School of Education Teaching Award The Graduate School of Education selected Nancy Myers as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Myers teaches Literacy and Language Development in Diverse Classrooms, with a deep commitment to support the development of teachers who value the uncovered potential for every child and who are inspired to provide rich, meaningful and student-focused literacy instruction. She also serves as the state regional director for the California Reading and Literature Project, responsible for coordinating high quality professional development in the area of student literacy for teachers in public K-12 schools.

Andrea Sell, PhD Assistant Professor, Psychology Outstanding Advisor Award The Leadership Awards Committee, comprised of faculty, staff and students, selected Andrea Sell to receive their Outstanding Advisor Award. Sell enjoys teaching courses that give students the skills and tools to conduct their own research, including courses such as Statistics and Research Methods. Students who wish to attain hands-on experience conducting research in the field of cognitive psychology can apply to work with her Memory and Cognition lab group on a number of interesting projects conducted each semester.

Sell also directs the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship.

Melissa Spence, EdD Assistant Professor, Learning and Teaching Graduate School of Education Scholarship Award The Graduate School of Education selected Melissa Spence as the recipient of its annual award for Outstanding Achievement in Scholarship. Her research has been significant in advancing the conversation on the specific needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in K-12 educational institutions. Spence was awarded a $736,802 five-year grant from the Department of Education and the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program for PAGES: Project for Advancement of Gifted and Exceptional Students. This program will help twice-exceptional students engage in a college-going culture.

The Campus Diversity Initiative selected Paul Witman as the recipient of their Inclusive Pedagogy Award, which honors a faculty member whose teaching pedagogy promotes diversity, inclusion and equity. Witman is director of the MS-Information Technology program, and of the Information Technology Management emphases for both the undergraduate and graduate business programs. He conducts research in information security and privacy, in the use of information related to vulnerable population groups, and in the uses of social media in nonprofits and religious organizations.

About Cal Lutheran California Lutheran University has seen remarkable growth since its founding in 1959.
