MINORS HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT WHY ADD A MINOR? THREE STUDENTS EXPLAIN THE BENEFITS.

Public Health In this versatile minor, students study how the science and practice of public health promotes and protects the health of people and communities and prepare for a variety of healthcare careers.

Why did you decide to minor in public health? ver since COVID-19, I’ve wanted to gain knowledge and skills E to ensure a better quality of health for my community, as well as how to advocate for and create programs to increase healthcare and medical services in low-income and immigrant communities.

Spanish Media The first and only program of its kind at a California private institution, students in this minor produce and publish Spanish media content and network with Spanish media professionals.

Why did you decide to minor in Spanish media?

The Spanish media minor really interested me because I had just accepted the position of deputy El Eco editor, the Spanish editor for The Echo student newspaper. So being on The Echo staff and finishing up the Spanish media requirements fit perfectly together.

How has the Spanish media minor enhanced your Cal Lutheran experience?

My Spanish writing is improving and my Spanish vocabulary is expanding — and the experience I am getting alongside working on The Echo has really put my Spanish media skills to the test.

I’m also making many connections with faculty and professors which is super helpful.

How has your public health minor enhanced your experience at Cal Lutheran?

It gave me the opportunity to produce two on-campus events this semester — the Breast Cancer Awareness event and World AIDS Day. It also provided a platform for me to create the first public health club at Cal Lutheran, an open environment for students focused on bringing awareness to various public health issues among the Cal Lutheran community.

I really enjoy being on the front lines of reporting and making sure the facts are facts. I’d like to get some experience at a local news station or media firm producing Spanish content, especially among Spanishspeaking communities where it’s not always accessible.

ISAIAH By minoring in public health, I’ll acquire the foundational academic knowledge, research skills and experiences needed to pursue my dreams of attaining my Ph.D. in public health and a career as an epidemiologist. MY COURSES

MEET FOUR CAL LUTHERAN PROFESSORS COMMITTED TO MAKING THEIR TEACHING MORE CULTURALLY RELEVANT AND RESPONSIVE BY PARTICIPATING IN THE CIRCLE* COLLABORATIVE, A UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED PROGRAM.

Aditi Sengupta, Ph.D. Biology Department STEM fields have these unspoken norms where personal stories and experiences aren’t shared in the classroom. I am even more convinced that our personal stories matter. I have to pause and think about ways I can bring the best out of students by designing my course to be accessible to diverse identities.

I am more aware of people’s experiences. Now, when I think of assignments or sharing examples of the topics I am teaching, I try to give examples that students can relate to, maybe a scientist from their home country or an example of a topic that has relevance in their community.

I modified my syllabus to make it more welcoming, I share discoveries of non-European/white scientists, and I assign reading materials that have relevance to non-white communities across the globe.

Sophia Khadraoui-Fortune, Ph.D. French Department As the director of the French and francophone program, I believe that the program’s curriculum needs to include interdisciplinary courses based on cultural studies where intersectionality is at the core, and where students interact with the diversity of French-speaking countries and their cultures.

It encouraged me to continue a thorough review of my syllabi, teaching material, assessment processes and grading. I now pay closer attention to the hidden curriculum and the unwritten and unofficial academic rules.

What might seem obvious or standard to us can also be damaging for others.

It was very important for me to change the tone of my syllabus; make it warmer, more inviting and less intimidating. I also renamed my “office hours” to “student hours.” These examples may sound trivial and insignificant, but simple changes added together can make a big difference.

Bryan Rasmussen, Ph.D. English Department It gave me a better understanding of how to think about inclusivity at a structural level. What assumptions am I making when I design my grading policies, or my attendance and participation expectations? How does the language I use reflect my attitude toward my students?

It gave me permission to be more open about my own experiences, to share vulnerabilities that I’d learned to hide. I’m not talking about over-sharing, I’m talking about empathy and vulnerability as pedagogical tools to break down barriers and create a more accessible class experience.

I build in more “meta-level” discussion of course assumptions and objectives so that students understand them in a wider academic context. For example, in my writing courses I make sure that students understand that other college classes have unstated expectations and assumptions about what makes successful writing.

Math Department I now see ways my practice of teaching may have been exclusionary to some students. Some were unintentional, such as expectations about what students “should know” coming in, like how to access resources or the value of attending office hours. Others simply had no real justification, such as valuing specific types of participation or holding rigid deadline structures.

I now have a deeper understanding of how my own bundle of identities and biases play a role in everything I do. This opens the door to connecting with students in a way that is more conducive to their academic, and even personal, success.

The initial, tangible changes were to the syllabus.

I also softened the language in some of the policies on attendance and late work. While the importance of attendance and turning work in on time is still highlighted, there is now explicit room to ask for extensions or to miss an occasional class.

What was the focus of your research?

We were researching RNA sequences that have just been discovered — not necessarily in humans, but with the potential to be. RNA is single-stranded DNA, and what makes it special is that it can take a specific shape or conformation and be used in a wide variety of reactions. RNA discoveries are interesting because along with uses for therapeutics or treatments, they’re also the way many viruses carry around their genetic code.

The discovery couldn’t come at a better time as we are currently using a form of RNA (mRNA) in COVID-19 vaccines.

What was it like working in the new Swenson Science Center?

The new Swenson Science Center has a real modern aesthetic; just walking into the building makes me feel like a scientist.

My favorite piece of equipment was the incubator where we grew our bacteria.

What’s next?

What was the focus of your research?

The research I conducted with Dr. Hoffmann and Rachel Schmid involved Cal Lutheran’s art collection from Papua New Guinea.

This collection dates back to the 70s from a man named Ellsworth La Boyteaux, and the collection has barely been touched or analyzed since then. The purpose of the study was to determine whether these sacred art objects utilized specific pigments to activate spirituality.

What was it like working in the new Swenson Science Center?

Every element within the building is so innovative. The project I was working on was interdisciplinary, and the way we were able to conduct our work proves how versatile the building is.

What’s next?

My goal is to get a Ph.D. in neuroscience and grow little brain organoids. The research this summer really helped me amplify the excitement I have for working in the lab and gave me ideas for other projects.

I plan on attending medical school after taking a gap year so I can serve others and study, while potentially doing something art-related. My goal is to build a brand that’s centered around making medicine more inclusive and patient-centric.

What was the focus of your research?

We focused on herbal medicine and its affect on human health. Because there’s been so much written about the benefits of herbal medicine, we wanted to see whether taking too much (or too concentrated of a dose) would have any negative affects on our bodies. We did this by studying how the enzyme in our liver, Cytochrome P450, breaks down different compounds found in the products, and how the body reacts to the byproducts of those compounds.

What was it like working in the new Swenson Science Center?

I loved the open lab space and study area.

After being away from school for a year, it made me so excited to be in the lab again.

I just love spending time there and utilizing all the lab equipment.

What’s next?

This research experience allowed me to find my purpose and interests. I found out that I really enjoy solving problems, and organic chemistry is way more interesting than I’d thought. I decided to go to graduate school to study organic chemistry as a profession.

DURING HER SEMESTER IN DENMARK, KRISTINA STUDIED NEW MEDIA & CHANGING COMMUNITIES, LOOKING AT DIFFERENT WAYS TECHNOLOGY HAS IMPACTED OUR LIVES. SHE ESPECIALLY ENJOYED THE EXPERIENTIAL NATURE OF HER COURSEWORK.

ACADEMICS I love how progressive and ecofriendly Denmark is. I’m a fan of their lifestyle, between their excellent public transportation and aesthetic of modesty and simplicity.

When I had free time, I took the metro to explore Copenhagen with my friends.

About DIS

The Study Tours Core Course Week: Aarhus and Aalborg, Denmark Kristina and her classmates visited with the Managing Director of Microsoft Development, Copenhagen and toured the Microsoft facilities, spent time with other professionals in the field, had fun class bonding activities such as rope climbing courses, and explored new parts of Denmark.

Travel Week: Dublin, Ireland

DIS is a non-profit study-abroad foundation with campuses in Copenhagen and Stockholm. It’s known for hands-on learning opportunities such as study tours, immersion in local communities and faculty that teach what they do.

Here Krista’s class engaged with more technology professionals, visited the Cliffs of Mohrer, saw St. John King’s Castle and had free time to discover Dublin.

Kristina fell in love with Denmark and hopes to return and work there. She finds it extremely safe, friendly and beautiful, and she loves that it’s a welfare state.

What’s Next?

I loved my living situation in a kollegium — that meant I had international roommates as well as Americans. I had a German, an Italian, a Danish and a Vietnamese roommate.

Swimming Pool The five-foot-deep swimming pool in front of Grace Hall and nestled between Afton and Janns Hall is a popular spot for a quick afternoon dip, a pick-up game of Marco Polo or a much-deserved sun-bathing study break.

Having the pool close to Grace Hall is definitely a perk. It’s a great spot to de-stress and relax.

My friends and I come and just hang out when it’s hot outside.

Basketball and Volleyball Courts Three residence halls — Mt. Clef, Pederson and Thompson — have their own recreation area with basketball and sand volleyball courts. The courts are lit until 10 p.m. year-round, and friendly (and sometimes competitive!) games are often played well into the night.

All the outdoor facilities help create a very welcoming energy. It makes living away from your family a lot easier. It’s a really nice community and a homey vibe.

Hiking Trails The Cross and CLU Rocks on Mt. Clef Ridge are favorite hiking and trail running destinations from all the residence halls.

It’s the perfect mid-day break and a great place to watch the sunset.

I love the hike up Mt. Clef. It’s very tranquil and peaceful, especially when I want to get my mind off of my studies. I like to come in the morning to relax and take a break.

I took a SQL databases course and discovered I wanted a career with SQL. My last year at Cal Lutheran, I was a student tech with ITS on campus where I learned how to fix technical issues.

What do you love about your work?

Everyday I’m problem solving a new issue, so I’m always learning something new.

And Yardi is huge at giving back. I appreciate and admire how much the company does for others.

Cal Lutheran advantage? I utilized Career Services tons! Cindy Lewis told me about this amazing company called Yardi Systems and said I should apply for their internship ASAP. The internship was like being a technical account manager in training.

Once I read the job description, I knew in my heart that this is where I wanted to work.

What do you love about your program?

I chose my PA program for similar reasons I chose Cal Lutheran: I prefer small class

What do you love about your program?

How did Cal Lutheran prepare you for graduate school? As a football player,

I love the community. The alumni are remarkably active and experts in all parts of the industry. It’s so helpful having someone who used to be in your position giving you pointers and helping you navigate through new experiences.

I was immersed in a locker room full of people from all different places and backgrounds. This made me realize the power and strength of football, and sports in general, to bring people together in a positive way. It inspired me to reach the highest level in sports and to pursue an advanced degree in sport management.

The university always puts on events that helped students from every department get into the same room and connect.

It’s been extremely helpful to have peers from the honors’ tracks in such close living proximity. Group projects have been a lot less complicated to coordinate because you can simply walk a few doors down and find your peers!

The GLC is unique because from the get-go, you know you share at least one common interest with everyone else: exploring the globe. This makes it easy to get to know people. I truly couldn’t imagine myself living on campus any other way.

One of my favorite things is the huge amount of cultural diversity in the GLC. It’s been super interesting meeting people from all sorts of different backgrounds, from India to Mexico to Syria and more. One of my roommates is even studying abroad from Sweden!

REYNA RODRIGUEZ, Junior Major: Computer Science; Minor: Multimedia Residing in the STEM LLC allows for that smaller, tight-knit community that you wouldn’t find elsewhere. It’s also easier to connect with people who share your major. While living here, I’ve had plenty of study sessions where we collaborate in order to have a better understanding of our coursework.

There are always programs going on that cater to the STEM community.

I hosted a ‘Spooky Slime’ program for the month of October where I made slime with residents and taught them how the activators in slime work together to form a process called cross-linking.

Favorite food station: I love the 360 Grill because it’s ‘chef’s choice,’ so it’s always something different.

On the weekends they have a delicious omelette bar.

Favorite meal: Either fried rice with chicken and peppers or grilled chicken sandwich with fries.

I also enjoy the make-your-own sandwich bar at lunchtime.

Favorite place to hang out: It depends on what I’m doing. Ullman Commons is a great place to meet with people, and Starbucks is great for studying.

The Habit is a really fun dinner spot.

What’s the best thing about being back together as a team?

Being able to play volleyball together every day. We all missed each other, obviously, but we especially missed being on the court with one another.

How did you welcome the team back?

We carried out our team tradition to do some bonding before our report day. The whole team came back a couple days early and we went to the beach, hung out, watched movies, ate and played volleyball together.

What’s the best thing about being back together as a team?

AJ: I truly missed the energy that’s created from being together.

The focus and drive we build as a team throughout the season feeds into everything we do, so a good day in the pool is usually a good day in the classroom, too.

How did you welcome the team back?

AJ: We had a few team events for the entire team to get to know each other, especially the incoming transfers and freshmen.

Our teammates are the ones that motivate us when times get rough, so it’s extremely important to have great team chemistry both in and out of the pool.

What are you most excited about this season?

Miles: I’m excited to see what we are capable of accomplishing.

Almost everyone is in form to set all-time personal bests this season, and there’s no better feeling than accomplishing this when you have the greatest teammates supporting each other along the way.

What are you most excited about this season?

Getting to play competitive volleyball. Practicing with each other or playing pickup games is very different from being in an actual collegiate-level game. The adrenaline and volleyball high is completely unmatched!

Men’s Football NICK LASHER, Junior Major: Exercise Science

What’s the best thing about being back together as a team?

We’ve been without football for a year and a half and everything feels special, from the locker room shenanigans to the practices to the games. I’ve really missed the sense of brotherhood.

How did you welcome the team back?

We eat all of our meals together, which makes it easy to build relationships with the new guys. But the best way to welcome the team back was by spending time together on the field.

Running through plays and getting to know each other as teammates helped build friendships and trust that helps unify us all.

What are you most excited about this season?

Being able to play the game we love. We can finally show off all of our hard work and just have fun. Each of us has been waiting for this moment, and we’re ready to seize of every opportunity.

What’s the best thing about being back together as a team?

Trinity: Being able to enjoy each other’s company while playing soccer is the best gift I could ask for. COVID-19 made me realize that we can’t take anything for granted, and I’ve enjoyed every single second I’ve been back with the team.

How did you welcome the team back?

Sonia: We stuck to traditions — jogging up to the cross on the hill as a team on the first day of practice and name games to get to know the freshmen. The ability to be with each other felt special already.

What are you most excited about this season?

Sonia: I’m excited to see how far this team will go. How we respond to adversity will really show our character. In my last few weeks as a Regal, I’d love to see this program go farther than it’s ever gone.

Snow: Mountain High Winter Resort February: Students can choose to snowboard or ski during this annual trip to the slopes in Wrightwood, less than two hours from campus. Students always look forward to this event — and lift tickets and equipment rentals are free!

This trip is always a blast! I loved seeing the lights of Los Angeles, Orange County and Riverside from the top of the chairlift. You’ll have the time of your life on the slopes!

CARY HALE-MOUNIER, Junior Major: Psychology

Sand: Surf Lessons October: A short 25 miles from campus, adventurous Cal Lutheran students spent a day at Malibu’s beautiful Zuma Beach learning to surf with instructors from Malibu Makos. They cheered each other on as initial falls become balanced rides on the waves.

This was my first time surfing and I had trouble balancing myself on the surfboard at first. But after a few attempts and guidance from my surfing instructor, I was able to balance on my own. Making new friends was definitely the best part of the trip. It was a great time overall!

GRAB EQUIPMENT AND GO. FOR FREE! Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of free rental equipment for students to use. Just reserve what you want online and head to the sand, snow or wherever an adventure may take you.
