Post-Graduation Plans: A gap year or two to do environmental justice advocacy and volunteering overseas in community development, followed by graduate school in public policy.

Research with Dr. Hoang

Study Abroad & Internship in D.C.

I’m conducting research on an environmental justice project in Oxnard. Dr. Hoang and Dr. Hanrahan gathered data of pesticide exposure in the local farmworkers, and I’m helping bring awareness, education and justice to this issue. The project has special meaning to me because my grandfather (pictured in circle above), as part of the United Farm Workers, advocated for farmworkers’ rights back in the 1970s and 80s.

I studied abroad at the Universidad de Granada in Spain for a semester, where a politics class deeply expanded my knowledge of the European Union. I also did a full-time internship with Sen. Dianne Feinstein on Capitol Hill, where I attended congressional hearings and briefings and conducted research.

I saw how real, well-thought-out legislation passes through Congress and can be enacted into law.

Research with Dr. Carron My research work in high energy physics has been difficult, exciting, eye-opening and very fulfilling. I’ve dug into different aspects of high energy physics, adapting tests for new prototype detectors intended to be used in the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. I’ve also designed the optics of prototype tests for these detectors The summer after my sophomore year, I worked in and attended a data analysis school at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago.

By understanding the driving forces, I believe that it is much easier to be sympathetic and tolerant toward everyone, even when you don’t agree with them. I love Cal Lutheran’s supportive psychology professors, who were instrumental in helping me get into a doctoral program.”

Research with Dr. ElBassiouny I joined Dr. ElBassiouny’s research team this year, and also completed an independent project with her on the impact of a defendant’s race and gender on a juror’s willingness to discard a confession.

We’re currently in the process of getting it published and also expanding on the project for my honors thesis.

McNair Scholars Program This program funded my travel expenses to conferences to present my work. It has been a big help in exposing me to the world of research as well as graduate school possibilities.

FILM & TELEVISION PROGRAM FEATURES • Each student does several internships with Hollywood film and television companies.

• A vast network of graduates working at giant entertainment corporations such as Disney, ESPN, Netflix, CBS, ABC and Fox Sports.

Synopsis: A girl named Emma confronts sexual identity in a college environment.

As director of photography for the web series, Jannell de la Nuez was most often found behind the camera. She also worked closely with the director in determining the desired shot, location scouting and scheduling.

We were really organized and prepared in pre-production, with shot lists, prop lists and call sheets in order. So, we were quickly able to respond to any curveball thrown our way.

Unbound A dance video choreographed and produced by Kristen Case

Synopsis: Teams of students create five short comedy sketch videos parodying types of TV shows.

Synopsis: Unbound uses dance to explore people who want to connect with and learn from other people.

Hans’s group created The Tallahassee Talent Jubilee, where contestants from across the nation compete. His group had made videos together before, so their creative process was an experienced team effort in writing, directing and production.

As producer and choreographer, Kristen assembled the team, held casting auditions, rehearsed the dancers, brought in a cinematographer and found funding for the film.

I really enjoyed playing Dante Deception, one of the talent-show contestants. It was a very funny day of shooting and the class in general was such a fun experience.

The rehearsals and the dancers’ energy were high points for me— and seeing my dancers have a good time. They still talk about the experience and one of them even declared a dance minor!

Visiting with Luca Bernardinetti of Mahanakorn Partners Group (MPG) was an awe-inspiring experience. The CEO led a free-form conversation and started talking about cultural immersion and his transition to Bangkok. Karlee was able to ask direct questions about the company’s culture, its brand and how it operates from a human resources perspective— her career interest.

I experienced the heart of Vietnam when we took a boat ride along the Mekong River, one of the primary support systems of the Vietnamese economy. We watched local coconut caramel be made from start to finish, enjoyed local fruits and listened to traditional music.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BANQUET CERAMICS STUDENTS CREATE THE UTENSILS, PLATES AND GLASSES WITH WHICH 100 GUESTS WILL EAT AND DRINK FROM AT THE ANNUAL GARDEN-TO-TABLE PROJECT. • In the SEED Garden, students plant and tend to produce that they will use for the meal, as well as locally source ingredients from farmers.

• Once the banquet has been prepared, students from various clubs and classes will come together to cook a meal from scratch and enjoy the fruits of their labor.

• In the end, students create a communityfocused experience that celebrates finding common ground in our diverse world.

• In Spring, the fourth annual Garden-to-Table Banquet will be shared by the Cal Lutheran community—and it promises to be the biggest and best yet!

Student Fun Recreational Swim Samuelson Aquatics Center offers two pools—one Olympic-sized and the other a seven-lane community pool—for year-round lap and recreational swimming.

Innertube Water Polo Tournament Sponsored by Outdoor Rec—members of the women’s water polo team referee and help participants learn the sport as they play on innertubes.

I absolutely love our pool. During our morning practices, we get to see the sun rise in a gorgeous setting surrounded by mountains. Vibrant reds, pinks, yellows and oranges light up the sky—it’s a great way to start the day! It leaves me feeling grateful for such an amazing team and complex where I get to compete and play.

FUN FACTS Samuelson Aquatics Center was the training site for the U.S. Olympic Men’s Water Polo team in 2008, 2012 (won a silver medal) and 2016.

One of the largest collegiate women’s water polo tournaments in the nation— the Tina Finali Invitational—is hosted by Cal Lutheran.

A giant hawk named George watches over swim practices. Sometimes, he swoops down to pick a living snack from the bushes!

It takes the swim team 12 minutes to change the configuration of the pool from “long course” to “short course” and vice versa.

The CLU Master Swim Academy offers expert coaching to community members training for swim meets, open water competitions, triathlons and overall health and fitness.

How did you get into the brewing business?

My husband and I had been home brewing for years when we were approached about opening Kohola Brewery on Maui. Every time something in the brewhouse broke, I’d consult with the brothers behind Enegren in Moorpark.

After a few years, we hired a Kohola brew team and began focusing on recipe design and growing the business. About that time at Enegren’s Irishfest, Chris Enegren told me they needed a new brewer—and I joined their team.

Women just didn’t brew beer back then.

But I just pushed harder and became the first female brewer in Ventura County.

Why did you start Public 311?

I was working in social media and content creation, while my mom was styling our home and bringing each space to life.

I began to use our home as a backdrop for my employer’s photoshoots. My mom and I began to see that together we could combine our love for styling and photography to help brands, businesses and individuals visually tell their story—and make the transition from selling in person and in store to recreating that experience online through their branded images on social media. Public 311 was born!

What was your vision?

We felt that we could have a community impact by bringing people together. Once we started to get to know the people walking through our doors, we saw the importance of providing a platform for local artists.

We’ve held hundreds of live music events, we produce a full-scale art + music festival, and were even inspired by our community to launch our own clothing line.

“ FIVE 07 has built community in our city and offers creative space for people to develop their art. We’re a middle ground for the band ready to go from house shows to legit venues.

We provide walls seen by thousands for up-and-coming painters. A chair to write a screenplay. A couch to meet up with your best friend. A warm hug to envelop your spirit.”

Highlights:

• During the 2018 fires, dozens of volunteers helped us deliver coffee to first responders and displaced people. We also held two benefit concerts that raised money for charities helping the local community.

• Through the pandemic, we hosted “quarantine corners” that highlighted musical sets and some standup comedy—local artists whom we live streamed and posted on YouTube (Five07 Creative) in 4k. fall/winter 2020

As an urban sociologist, this event is a wonderful example of community, culture and urban art coming together.

The altar project is my way to educate people on the history, meaning and origins of Día de los Muertos.

SOME FAVORITE SPRING SEMESTER TRADITIONS ASCLU Events: Silent Disco A crowd of 110 people showed up for this dance party with headphones.

Color-coordinated headphones let students with like colors jam together to the same songs. Everyone had a great time, with amazing music from two student DJs.

I had tons of fun dancing to some all-time favorite songs with my lacrosse teammates and friends.

Silent Disco was a unique event, with delicious sandwiches from the famous Grilled Cheese Truck.

Cal Lutheran Day with the LA Kings: Staples Center, LA Students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends came together for a fun afternoon starting with a reception before the LA Kings game against the New Jersey Devils. Two lucky members of the Cal Lutheran community were chosen to ride the Zamboni during intermissions and wave university pennants.

CAL LUTHERAN STUDENTS ON THE EVENTS THEY EAGERLY ANTICIPATE DURING SECOND SEMESTER! Mountain High Winter Fun: Wrightwood, CA Students took to the slopes in this year’s second annual Mountain High Winter Resort Trip. Sponsored by Outdoor Recreation, they could choose to ski or snowboard. This is the event many students most look forward to all year.

The trip was a blast! I drove up with friends, and we rocked out to music, getting pumped up for what turned out to be the time of our lives on the slopes. I also loved seeing the lights of Los Angeles, Orange County and Riverside at the top of the chairlift.

Drop-Ins: DojoBoom and Boba At an indoor aerial recreation park called DojoBoom, students had a blast on trampolines, rock walls and more.

The biggest hit? Human hamster (or Zorb) balls where they rolled around inside a giant inflatable ball, bumping into one another. The matcha boba that followed was a hit!

Zandra, a four-year starter and one of the most decorated athletes in Cal Lutheran women’s soccer history, played an integral role in sending the women’s soccer team to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Secrets to Athletic Success I focused on learning as much as I could and improving my skills.

Each season, I gave myself a personal goal and did my best to reach it. I tried to make myself and my teammates better by practicing and communicating a lot—both on and off the field. Also, surrounding myself with friends who worked hard pushed me to do better.

Secrets to Balancing Athletics and Academics I carefully scheduled my days so that I finished all my homework and still made it to my soccer commitments. This meant lots of late nights studying, doing homework on the bus to away games, and sometimes even doing homework in the locker room before practice!

Obasi, one of the most decorated athletes in Cal Lutheran history, set two firsts for the football program.

• He was the first Kingsmen football player to be named First Team All-West Region twice.

•H e was also the first to earn First Team All-SCIAC all four years.

The four-year starter was also an awardwinning member of the men’s track and field team for three years.

Secrets to Athletic Success Sticking to the script. Keeping the same work ethic that I did my freshman year when I was a nobody. And praying to keep God first. Also, being on the track and field team really helped with my speed and acceleration on the field, so I advise that as off-season training for players.

Secrets to Balancing Sports and Study Balancing academics and athletics kept me busy all the time and taught me time management. Also, athletics motivated me to be a better student because I had to have a good GPA to be eligible to play.

Athletics Cal Lutheran is a member of NCAA Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Over the last decade, Cal Lutheran teams have won 60+ SCIAC championships, the 2015 national championship in women’s volleyball, and the 2017 national championship in baseball.
