A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
In these challenging times for our industry, Clubs SA stands firmly in support of the concerns raised by Mr Jack Ferrett of The Clubhouse, in Tanunda Not only is South Australia in the grips of a cost of living crisis, but it’s also a tough time for the not-forprofit sector, small and family businesses. The pressures facing our industry, from rising costs to the increasing burden of payroll tax, are undeniable These challenges have been compounded by an environment where associations like yours are being asked to do more with less, all while continuing to serve your communities with dedication and resilience
At Clubs SA, we believe it is crucial that our members are not penalised for their efforts to provide employment and contribute to the local economy The current Payroll Tax threshold is an unnecessary burden on many not-for-profit organisations, and we support the call to increase this threshold from $1 5 million to $2 1 million This reform would save many of our members tens of thousands of dollars each year, allowing them to reinvest in their operations and continue supporting their communities Additionally, exempting apprentices and trainees from Payroll Tax is essential to addressing our skills shortage By making these changes, we can ensure that South Australia becomes a place where not-for-profits and small businesses can support both economic growth and the development of our workforce and vibrant resilient communities..
We commend The Clubhouse for their proactive approach in navigating these tough economic conditions and for their commitment to maintaining service levels despite these pressures It is this kind of forward-thinking that will help our industry weather the current storm
Clubs SA will continue to advocate on behalf of our members for fairer treatment and more supportive policies from our government We encourage all our members to stay informed, support each other, and remain engaged in this vital conversation about the future of our industry Thank you for your continued dedication and perseverance during these difficult times.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Apostolopoulos Clubs SA

SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOP
SMALL BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY SUPPORT PROGRAM
A big thank you to those that attended the recent Sustainability Workshop at Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club
Clubs SA was able to offer this tailored to Clubs workshop through support from the Office of Small and Family Business and of course our wonderful friends at the Surf Club who so generously hosted the morning
Feedback we ’ ve had:
“The takeaways were thought provoking and incentivised me to seek out opportunities to improve our club's sustainability through relatively simple fixes” “Enjoyable and informative Will be following up particularly with that grant money available”
The grant referred to is “Small Business Energy Grants” and the presenter of the workshop, James from 2XE provided some useful guidance on this to the attendees
There are further workshops scheduled including Maitland on 12 September, Port Augusta 17 September and Adelaide 14 November If you are interested in attending, here is the LINK>>
It will be well worth the effort on both a personal level and for your Club
Crisis Management & Business Continuity Resources
The changing climate poses a wide variety of risks for Clubs in SA including physical impacts to buildings and staff from extreme weather events, supply disruptions and changing affordability of insurance
It is best practice for a Club to have a continuity plan to assist and guide actions when responding to emergencies Planning beforehand will help considerably both during and after an emergency event and therefore aid recovery
As you will know, many of our Members have already been impacted in different ways such as bush fires and flooding
I hope to have many more resources available to Members in the coming months but in the meantime, I can provide some documents including templates for Business Continuity Policy, Emergency Contacts –Internal, Emergency Contacts – External, Risk Assessment and Emergency Kit.
If you would like any of the above or have a request/idea for others, just drop an email and I shall get in touch

WORKING OUT A EMPLOYEES PAY RATE
I often get asked by clubs how to determine the pay rate for an employee and for a lot of smaller clubs with limited paid staff they may not be overly familiar with how to do this
Firstly, a club needs to determine if a modern award or agreement applies to their employee and all modern awards will have a coverage clause that details who it intends to cover
Unless a club has an applicable enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) then their employee is likely covered by the Registered and Licensed Clubs Award 2020, often just referred to as the Clubs Award
