Driving Change or an Agenda From The Chief Executive

This month licensed venues in Canberra featured in The Canberra Times and other media outlets, after the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) released findings from Deakin University related to the Driving Change Project and emergency department alcohol presentations at both Calvary and Canberra Hospitals.

There can be little doubt that our hospitals and emergency departments are busier for a host of reasons over a weekend, the media coverage of this issue however leaves readers with the impression that alcohol is the leading cause when in fact, it is not. Worse, the data presented by ACEM in their media release was rounded up, presenting only the Friday and Saturday night numbers at 16% (Calvary) and 14% (TCH) of all attendances. These numbers may appear high, however the numbers in the report by Deakin University, when normalised over the week are actually 3.7% (Calvary) and 5.6% (TCH) of all attendances.

According to the annual Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data, collected from all EDs nationwide, in the ACT over 2016-17 there were a total of 143,860 ED presentations. Just 765 were alcohol-related. That’s 0.53% of total presentations. This is below the national average of 0.6% for the same year.

Further, over a 3 month period in Canberra there were 29,639 ED presentations at our two hospitals and just four people saying they had their last drink at a venue in the preceding 12 hour period, was what resulted in them being named and shamed by ACEM.

Previous data in the ACT, from 2014-15, reveals that the proportion of ED presentations that were alcoholrelated are falling. In that year, of the total 129,961 ED presentations, 789 (or 0.6%) were alcohol-related. Data is not available for 2015-16.

Sourcing reports from other jurisdictions provides additional perspective and by way of example, St Vincent’s in Melbourne experiences 27.1% ED presentations on Friday and Saturday night related to alcohol - somewhat higher than the ACT.

While a trend based on two years is not possible, the available official data suggests alcohol-related ED presentations are not only few, but falling in the ACT, which is mirrored across the country.

Canberra’s hospitality industry is a mature one, it isn’t Cardiff, home to the model on which this research by a Welsh maxillofacial surgeon Jonathan Shepherd is based. Our venues therefore deserve some maturity on how the conversation takes place in the public arena.

If my name has not given away my origin of birth, I’m Welsh and when I think of Cardiff (my visits in my teens and twenties) I recall a significant drinking culture and some pretty rough pubs.

This is not only bereft of any scientific rigour, but makes no practical sense. “ Finally, we shouldn’t shy away from conversations about the significance of alcohol related harm and violence in our communities wherever it happens but no business should be named and shamed on the numbers presented. The fact, that ACEM went to media before working with venues (which forms part of their own project parameters) fuels my cynicism of their approach to the research – are their objectives really about driving change or simply an agenda?

Why diversity matters - women in senior leadership and on boards Half the Australian work force are women, but as the leadership hierarchy climbs through management and executive positions all the way to heads of business the proportion of women at these senior levels falls at a rapid rate.

In fact, in 2018 just 17.1 per cent of Australia’s CEOs were female and as 31 May 2019, female directors account for only 29.6% of all ASX200 board positions.

A global study by Deloitte has found that companies with a female CEO or board chair have almost twice as many women on the board as companies led by men.

There is evidence that having more women in leadership roles results in increased profitability, reduces risks, helps attract and retain talent, and can enhance a company’s reputation.

Perhaps one of the greatest impacts is the flow on effect of diversity of thought but it is also diversity in our custom that provides new opportunities to stay competitive.

At our recent ClubsACT Conference, Luke Simmons the Chief Executive of the Norths Group offered in his presentation the groups’ analysis of the customer Norths were aiming for in their redevelopment of The Greens in North Sydney.

Luke explained that their market research had revealed that the customer they wanted to target was a 38 year old woman. He further offered, somewhat playfully that… “if we got that right, the 18 to 85 year old man would follow!” What Luke was really driving at, is that we must understand that assessing diversity in our business models is not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.

Australia’s licensed venues are grassroots clubs. They are community clubs open to all. Clubs must reflect not only our community’s current values but our aspirations for the future. They must lead the way in building the community we want.

While the club sector accepts it still has a way to go when it comes to diversity and equity, it has made significant strides in a short period of time especially considering it wasn’t too long-ago women were banned from licensed venues.

Today women make up over 50 per cent of club employees. The gender equity full-time pay gap in our local clubs stands at 13 per cent. While only an eradication of the gender pay gap is acceptable, this compares favourably to the national average for nonpublic sector organisations of 21.3 per cent.

INCLUSION PROJECT Minecraft is an awesome game to play. Minecraft is a 3D online survival game about mining and going on adventures.

Released in 2011, you start as a character, all alone and you have to build yourself a safe place to survive the first night. You then gather resources and craft items to enable you to survive and create a world where you grow.

It’s one of the biggest selling and most popular computer games of all time, having sold 154 million copies, making it the second biggest video game of all time, behind Tetris.

In Canberra, a family has been looking for advice on assisting their 19-year-old daughter to gain employment. When she was 12, she loved Minecraft.
