We very much appreciate your understanding and acceptance of the difficult decisions made by the board and management in the interest of our members and guests’ safety and well-being. On a positive note, it is with great pride that I present our financial accounts for 2020. In spite of the difficult year we faced, the results are reassuring. This year we achieved a profit before tax of $4,085,160 with an EBITDA of 32.51%. Our goal in 2021 will be to continue to work towards increasing our patronage, offerings and improving facilities for our members and guests under the guidelines of NSW Health. On the community front, in 2020 our club continued it steadfast support to the local and greater communities through ClubGrants and CRCommuniTEAM programs. I am pleased to report that our ClubGrants donations and support to local charities and sporting groups was just shy of $350,000.
First of all, I wish you all a happy and healthy 2021. 2020 certainly tested us in ways few of us could have imagined, it was not the year we expected. However, we were very lucky to be able to keep Club Rivers open and operating during much of these uncertain times. Despite the challenge that COVID-19 has brought us, the Club thankfully remains in a solid financial position and of course, the health of our members and their families was and will always be our priority. Now we stand at the beginning of a new year and eagerly anticipate the arrival of the new vaccine, however, there is still time to go before everything is normal again, especially in the first 6 months of the year.
The Major recipients of this year’s ClubGrants Category 1 donations included; Veterans Centre Sydney; Northern Beaches Inc, Sir Roden & Lady Cutler Foundation, Australian Air League Riverwood Squadron, Calvary Health Care, Mini Fit Clinic, Team Rubicon, Miracle Babies, Learning Links, 3 Bridges Community, Georges River Life Care, St George Children with Disabilities, The Kogarah Storehouse, The Shepherd Centre, Autism Community Network. To my fellow directors thank you for your continued support and for the many hours you have devoted for the benefit of Club Rivers. Once again, from the Board and Management of Club Rivers we wish you all a happy and healthy 2021, and take care of your family and loved ones.

CLUB RIVERS CELEBRATES
60TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2021
Pictured: Club President Fred Lord along with Wing Commander Mark Bannister
Throughout 2021 we will be celebrating and reminiscing the 60 year histo entertainment and promotions that made Club Rivers what it is today. We invite you to join us on our journey during 2021 to celebrate reaching this significant milestone on the 4th November 2021. 6
On the 2nd March 1959 a group of exservicemen attended a meeting at the Methodist Church in Coleridge Street with a view to forming a club.
After three years of trading, houses on Lots 9 & 10 Littleton Street were purchased at auction followed by property in Thurlow Street.
Through the assistance of the Legion and their Secretary , Major Eric Vidal M.C, Eric Evans and the then President of the Hurstville Legion, Jack Cooper the local body of the Australian Legion of Exservice Men & Women (the Sub Branch) was formed.
The first club house designs were commissioned to Mr Ken Ritchie of then Lightfoot ,Stanton & Hanlon and builders Coleman & Fairburn were the successful tenderers.
Several meetings later the first Club Committee was formed. Their first task; securing a minimum of 200 members. So membership was offered at 5/- per year with little to offer. Through hard work and dedication when the committee finally obtained the licence operate a club they had only £300 to their name. Finally on the 4th November 1961, financed by Reuben F. Scarf, 4,000 sq ft on the top floor of his shop the Riverwood Legion Club was born.

The Governor Sir Roden Cutler was asked to officially open the new clubhouse on 4th November 1967. Unfortunately due to illness Lady Cutler filled in. On 24th September 1970 Lightfoot, Stanton, Hanlon & Ritchie were again commissioned to design a new games and auditorium area.
2021 is the 20th year of the Wine Club which commenced with an “expression of interest” Tyrrells’ dinner in September 2001. Over its twenty year history the club has held tastings, dinners, wine tours & cocktail nights. The highlight has been the hosting of 72 wine dinner nights where wines from Australia, NZ, France, Spain and Italy were presented, with many fine Australian wine makers including Bruce Tyrrell, Lisa McGuigan, Neil Paulett, Bill Calabria & Neil McGuigan in attendance. Most importantly the dinners are home to a Wine Options game with a highly prized perpetual medal to be won. Bastille nights and “4th of July” dinners have provided the opportunity for fun, stunning costumes, singing, games and great food! The Wine Club provides it members an opportunity to enjoy good wine, excellent food, great company and to make lasting friendships. Wine tours are held annually and are quickly booked out, with visits to Mudgee, Rutherglen, Griffith, Young, Orange and Murrumbateman as well as day trips to the Hunter, Southern Highlands and the South Coast. Our trip for 2021 will be the postponed 3 day trip to the Hunter staying at the Tuscany Estate. The Wine Club affords members the opportunity not only to experience fine wines but also to learn more about a worldwide industry that it is part of our everyday life. For further information on the wine club please contact Mary Butler at polkate@bigpond.net.au

Club Rivers was proud to again support the Free Community Christmas Day lunch provided by Community Care. Grant Heslop from Padstow Community Care has kindly provided us with an account of the event. This year more than any other, we saw the importance of a community event that brought people together. So many of these families and individuals from our community have had exceedingly difficult years and the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a heavy toll on people’s health and mental health. We were concerned with recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Sydney and that might lead to a cancellation of the lunch. Thankfully after consulting with the NSW Health Department and local government leaders we were able to go ahead. We had an incredible team of volunteers who did an incredible job in preparation and on the day to make the event a successful one. We had a COVID Safe Plan in place for the day to insure everyone’s safety and care.
16
Our volunteers were all trained before the day in regarding expectations in the implementation of that plan. Everything went well on the day which we were very thankful for. This year we had to use an online booking platform to register families and individuals to keep their details as required in our COVID Safe Plan. We knew numbers would be less than in previous years, but we were very thankful that exactly 100 people came to enjoy the Traditional Christmas Day lunch. We enjoyed excellent food and we distributed presents to all who attended as well. All of the children in attendance were very thankful and excited about getting a present which we distribute each year. So, another successful Community Christmas Day lunch was held, and your support made the day a reality and blessing for the community. Thank you for partnering with us in this important and much needed community event. Many Thanks, Grant Heslop Manager Community Care

Club Rivers Secret Santa Project aimed to make the holiday season brighter An ambitious project from Club Rivers aimed to get local members & residents in the festive spirit, was held this week. Club Rivers organised the Secret Santa project, an event that included a visit from Santa to homes and local support groups to spread some much-needed joy to locals this Christmas. Club CEO Paul Millar believed the project made a big impression on residents in the local area. He said: “Many of us have been impacted by the pandemic, whether it be socially, economically or emotionally and the event was just something we felt would bring a bit of positivity and fun to locals over a tough Christmas period. Many locals witnessed Santa and his posse cruising the streets in a little red corvette, whilst more than 40 local families, that signed up to take part in the event, received a personal visit and gift from Santa and his crew. “This is a year that will be remembered for generations and if we can take one bit of negative and make it a positive then we are reaching our aim as a community club,” said Paul Millar. The secret Santa project was held late afternoon on Monday 14 & Tuesday 15 December 2020. All generous donations received from local residents during the 2-day event will be given to the Starlight Foundation.

SHITBOX RALLY CHALLENGES TEAMS TO DRIVE CARS WORTH <$1000 ACROSS SOME OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST FORMIDABLE ROADS, ALL IN THE NAME OF CHARITY. OVER THE LAST 11 YEARS, BOX RALLIES HAS RAISED OVER $24 MILLION FOR CANCER COUNCIL. Shitbox Rally 2021 Autumn will be held May 22nd to May 28th, travelling from Alice Springs to Gold Coast via the Gulf of Carpentaria. This year our own Club Rivers President Michael Free along with former CEO Stuart Jamieson will be braving the unforgivable terrain of the Australian outback to raise funds for Cancer Research. Shitbox Rally is not a race, rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable… To drive cars worth just $1,000 across Australia via some of its most formidable roads, all in the name of charity. Many of us have been affected by cancer in one way or another. Whether it be parents, family, close friends, people we know or ourselves that have battled or are battling cancer, this awful disease has touched us all. We not only want to raise awareness and money for Cancer Council, but also want to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.
