Keynote Address
ANDREW YANG ’99

Andrew Yang ’99 is an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, and nonprofit leader, and he was a candidate in the 2020 presidential election.
After working as a lawyer and executive at several earlystage technology companies, Yang eventually became CEO of an education company that became No. 1 in the country. He then started a national entrepreneurship nonprofit, Venture for America, which worked to empower thousands of young entrepreneurs to bring their dynamism to communities across the country—from New Orleans and Baltimore to Denver and Detroit.
Yang was named a Presidential Ambassador of Entrepreneurship by the White House under the Barack Obama administration and a Champion of Change for his work with Venture for America. Initially dubbed a “longer than long shot” candidate by The New York Times in 2018, Yang became a top-tier contender for the presidency, raising nearly $40 million in grassroots funding.
With a vision to rewrite the rules of the U.S. economy through a “Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 a month for every American adult, Yang became one of the most exciting stories in the 2020 race. His nationwide group of supporters, known as the “Yang Gang,” propelled him to seven Democratic primary debates.
Following this unexpected run for president, Yang formed the nonprofit Humanity Forward, successfully lobbying Congress for direct cash relief for struggling American families during the pandemic while distributing over $8 million directly to struggling families. In 2021, he ran in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
Yang has since published a book, Forward: Notes on the Future of Our Democracy, in which he lays out the case for a variety of democracy reform measures that he says can unclog the pipes of our system and realign the incentives of legislators with the well-being of the American people.
Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching
ERIC TALLEY
Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law

Eric Talley, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law, was selected by the graduating class as this year’s recipient of the Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching. This is the second time he has received the Reese Prize (the first was in 2017).
Talley teaches classes on contract law, corporations, and corporate finance. As faculty co-director of the Ira M. Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership, Talley has hosted two seasons of the podcast Beyond Unprecedented: The Post-Pandemic Economy, which examines law, business, and capital markets in the aftermath of COVID-19.
Students praise Talley for his enthusiasm, energy, and ability to make complicated topics understandable. They call him “brilliant,” “kind,” “engaging,” and “the smartest, funniest, and most-excited-about-his-course Columbia Law School professor. He is a must-see.”
“He has passion for teaching and cares about his students,” one of his students wrote in a course evaluation.
“Professor Talley promised he would help us navigate the mathematical parts [of Corporate Finance], and of course he did,” wrote another student.
Talley combines classic Socratic dialogue with an informal teaching style— he has been known to hold office hours while riding a bicycle in Central Park, and he awards students with “I ♥ Corporations” T-shirts for good performance. He frequently collaborates with students on published scholarly papers. An economist as well as a legal scholar, Talley says economic concepts inform his teaching—just without the equations. “You don’t have to be a finance major to understand what’s going on in my class. I think that’s empowering for students, and it’s empowering for me.”

Tribute to the Class of 2022: the Class Gift
Each year at commencement, members of Columbia Law School’s graduating class present a class gift to the Law School as they transition from students to alumni—a tradition since the late 1990s to support the students who will follow in their footsteps.
Class gift co-chairs and committee members work diligently throughout the spring to engage all of their classmates in this effort, which consistently results in a tremendous annual class participation rate. Unfortunately, this year, as in the past two years, the pandemic rendered this effort impossible.
Acknowledging the fortitude of the Class of 2022, Columbia Law School alumnus
Kenneth L. Stein ’62—chair of his 60th Reunion and former member of the Law School’s Board of Visitors—has made a gift on behalf of the entire Stein family “in honor of every member of the Columbia Law School Class of 2022.”
This gift will help alleviate the unanticipated financial needs of current and future Columbia Law students.
Alumni Advice
To help celebrate this year’s graduating class, alumni leaders who generously serve on this year’s reunion committees share their advice with the newest members of the Columbia Law School alumni network. Here are some examples of their words of wisdom.
“As the years go on, you will find that you will be surprised at how much your law school education has prepared you not only for the practice of law but for other areas of life. . . . The training in how to think, how to solve problems, and how to work collaboratively is as important a part of your educational experience as the specific knowledge that you have gained about the law.”
—CATHY KAPLAN ’77
“Find work you enjoy, and don’t settle for what’s easy/convenient.”
—GEORGE KELLNER ’67
“It may not feel that way, but this is the best time in history to start a career. Be confident; the tremendous changes we are seeing present the greatest opportunities for those who are just entering the profession—because they are starting fresh.”
—GEROLD NIGGEMANN ’12 LL.M.
“Be open to opportunities to use your legal training in law in ways you may not have even imagined.”
—MARIAN BRANCACCIO ’92
“Be professional and kind in all that you do. The people you interact with may not remember the details of your interaction with them, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
—PATRICE JEAN ’02
“Find work that is enjoyable, meaningful, and fulfilling for you. Always strive to maintain a healthy balance between your professional and personal lives. . . . Continually reflect on your life and appreciate all the good things you have. It will make you happier and give you a balanced perspective on where things stand. Remember that life is ever-changing.”
—IGNACIO CRUZ AGUIGUI ’97
“Observe where there is momentum in the legal services industry, and [do not] place undue weight on tier-one shiny names in private practice. Stay curious!”
—LORENZO TOGNI ’12 LL.M.
“Follow your heart. Don’t hyperventilate over your first job out of law school. There will be lots of great opportunities in your future.”
—CYNTHIA QUARTERMAN ’87
“Build on the love and support of family and friends as you pursue your dreams. It is important for you to recognize that despite the world’s turmoil, your futures are bright. In each of you is considerable potential, seen and nurtured by those around you. Dear Members of the Class of 2022,
Congratulations on your graduation from Columbia Law School. As the newest members of our community, I welcome you. For we all share a special bond—a bond that links us with Columbia Law alumni across the generations.
Columbia Law quite literally transformed my life. As rewarding as my three years in law school were, the more than 30 years since my graduation have provided me an incredible journey. Wherever your path may take you, I hope you will remain engaged as a member of our Columbia Law family.
A key part of our mission at the association is to create opportunities to nurture your relationships with fellow alumni. Please consider joining us for events, sharing personal and professional updates, and serving on our board.
I know things have not been easy. From the moment you entered law school, you have had to endure the burdens imposed by the pandemic. As you leave Morningside Heights, keep in mind the words of Maya Angelou, who said, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
As a Columbia Law graduate, I have no doubt you will thrive. We at the Columbia Law School Association will be there with you and for you every step of your journey. My warmest wishes as you enter the next stage of what I know will be a promising career and hopefully a happy life.
Sincerely,
Rudy Carmenaty ’90 President, Columbia Law School Association Board of Directors
